Jessica is amazing! Very friendly, courteous, beautiful, welcoming, accomodating etc. The older dude is trash, he should be at the homeless shelter. Very rude, should have the place cleaned up before he boasts its a "convention mecca" no rooms available, walk out and call the place and he'll say come on down plenty of rooms.

Worst hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Here’s a summary: - On arrival we were told the booking was only for one person even though I had the confirmation with 4 on it. - We were told it was our fault and there was no way it was for four people. - The manager was incredibly rude and kept referring to me as ‘guy’. He was snappy and aggressive. - Made to wait for over 30 mins whilst he shouted down the phone at the Expedia customer service. - Finally got told that we were right and it was for four. - got our room and someone else was in it. - proceeded to split us up. - overbooked the room I was in, so I had to find another bed. - Awful hygiene, poor smell and botched fittings. Overall, an awful and unpleasant experience. Spend a bit more and stay somewhere that makes you feel like a welcomed guest.

***Update on the situation They kicked me out for banging on the door resulting in noise complaints from the houses next door and now won't answer my phone calls regarding my deposit. Would love to speak with the business owner about your wonderful attendant that is manning your facilities. When I asked what I should have done he stated sleep in my car. Don't know how things are done in Utah but in Idaho you are able to have an intelligent conversation with a person about issues that happen without refusing a paying customer. DO NOT STAY HERE! Owner/Lobby Attendant states it's like a hotel 6 but I've never been locked out pounding for hours on the door at a hotel 6. If you can afford to avoid this place please do so because I stayed in my car till 0200 till finally one of my roommates answered while I was pounding on the door waking everyone up but the attendant they would not refund me for my laughable night stay. Also another guest called the place at least 20 times as I left my phone in my room and he stated this happens often as the attendant is incompetent. Staying here because I just moved into the area with nowhere else to stay.

The place is barely good enough if you need a heated roof over your head for a night. Better than sleeping in your car. Office is closed and unstaffed for both check-in and check-out, does not answer calls. Locks doors at night before they're supposed to and doesn't show up without multiple calls. The room was way too warm but better than my cramped car. When another guest managed to get a hold of someone, I was told that I would have to wait for an hour for someone to arrive to return my security deposit, which would be well after the check-out time.

My nephew stayed here the first two days after being discharged from the hospital (he had been severely ill for weeks). His second night there he was in pain and not doing well so he took his bag with his meds out into the common area to rummage for pain relievers. As his condition declined he decided perhaps his blood sugar was off, but his testing unit was still in the room. Then he realized he had locked his paper with the room keycode in the room and couldn't get back in. So he called the supposedly-24hr front desk. The person who came out was absolutely furious with him, cursed at him, had him pick up his things and threw him out on the street, leaving him confused and crying on the front stoop. My nephew does not have a car, so he was unsheltered at close to midnight, in pain, and seriously ill. Fortunately he managed to get to a hospital. I cannot begin to say how angry I am at this place for endangering his life so callously.

These people intentionally mislead, stole my money, and have no place running a business!||I made a nonrefundable booking and then was told by the hostel that showing up after 10:30pm meant I wouldn't get a bed that I paid for. I didn't see anything about this on the Agoda booking. And for that matter, I've stayed at hostels all over the world and never once heard of a policy like this. In fact, most hostels will make sure you are accommodated, even if there's nobody there to greet you after hours. This was the opposite - 24 hour front desk (per their website) but no bed for you if you show up after 10:30pm!?||Couldn't existing guests can come and go at any hour of the night anyway? Couldn't the hostel simply ask for guests to keep quiet if we arrived late? ||To top it off, the guy was a complete jerk, unsympathetic, refused to give me a bed and then refused to give me a refund. He repeated defense was, "it's on the website." Since I swear I never saw anything about this during the booking, I looked again - it isn't on their website and I didn't see it on the booking site either. In the confirmation email (that I got after I already paid) it was, quite literally, all the way at the bottom of the fine print. The only place I eventually found it (after some deliberate searching, I must add) was all the way at the bottom of the details (that you have to scroll through, though the booking is all at the top of the page) showing a check in time ending at 22:30. And who would think to look there? What place with a 24-hour front desk has ever had an "end time" for check-in? To me, this absurd rule combined with lack of adequate notification serves little more than to screw people out of their money. Refusing a paid reservation is kind of a big deal and needs to be noted prominently. From this guy's I-really-don't-care attitude I'm guessing that I'm not the only one who fell for this.

DO NOT STAY HERE Aggressive reception from staff refused to let us check in for an hour and a half while they shouted at the Expedia rep. No linens on beds Dirty communal showers No door on bathroom stalls No storage lockers This is the worst and least welcoming place I have ever stayed at.

Not many options in salt lake for hostels but this place wasn't it. Free breakfast is bread & eggs on the counter (you make it yourself - but no oil to cook with). Not sure the beds ever get changed, didn't get bugs or anything tho 💁

Yelp
I rarely write reviews, but I'm taking the time to do it for these SCUM! I made a reservation through Expedia with these people. I needed a bed for one person for the following evening, but Expedia defaults to two people . for a date three days out. I saw the date and fixed it, but I missed the number of persons until I was about to book the bed. I did see it though and went "Back" in my browser and changed the number of persons to "1" I didn't notice though, that the date was reset to three days hence. I went ahead and made my reservation, and when I received the emailed confirmation I saw that the date was wrong. I called Avenues Hostel. All I wanted to do is switch the date, and they in fact had the availability on the night I needed. They said I had to call Expedia which I did. Expedia said THEY couldn't change the reservation on their own; they had to send an email to the Hostel to get authorization to "waive the penalty", which they did. I called Avenues back and the "manager" said he couldn't authorize the waiver - the owner had to do it, and he lives in China. THE MANAGER CAN'T CHANGE A RESERVATION DATE! SERIOUSLY!!! Here's what Expedia told me after we tried to get them to change the date: We wanted to follow up after our last conversation, where you asked us to reach out to your property to see if changing your reservation was possible. "We've contacted Avenues Hostel to see if they could make an exception and grant a refund. Unfortunately, after multiple tries, we weren't able to obtain approval from the property manager to waive the cancellation fee. This means the current rules and restrictions for your booking apply and a refund can't be granted. We're really sorry about this; we always try to contact suppliers and advocate for our travelers in these situations. Properties often have strict policies around refunds, and there's nothing more we can do in this case. Again, we're sorry that a refund wasn't possible. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to us." ALL I WANTED TO DO IS CHANGE MY RESERVATION TO THE CORRECT DATE. THEY HAD AN AVAILABLE BED, BUT THEY WOULD NOT HELP ME BY SWITCHING IT. TRAVELER BEWARE!!!!! THESE GUYS ARE NOT TRUSTWORTHY

Yelp
This place is an unsafe pigsty and would not appeal to any person looking for a normal hostel. The staff was the worst I have ever seen, and the place had not been cleaned in months. I would rather sleep on the street than here.

Cindy K.

Yelp
My son stayed there for about a month after being released from the hospital (mental illness) I believe several of the people staying there were in the same situation. Also, it was a good place to "score" pretty much anything you want. I gave it one star because at the time, it was the only place available-and a roof over his head.

Yelp
This place is filthy. Cliff the manager hired Theresa as a housekeeper. First off, an inspector told Theresa to not sleep in the storage unit, which she said she will continue to do anyway. Theresa puts guests in dirty rooms, where the sheets haven't been changed on the beds. Theresa doesn't clean the bathroom. She smokes weed in the storage room all day. Her demeanor is unstable and erratic. She exhibits bipolar behavior, by constantly snapping at people. She says one thing, then says another. A guest in room 15, named Shelly said she's afraid of Theresa.

Yelp
I booked this for my boyfriend the day of who is traveling from California to Georgia for work. The person working the front desk was an older gentlemen and asked him 3 times if he was illegal in the United States because he did not have his passport. Well most do not know but if you come into this country via the boarder do to unsafe conditions in your country and it is life or death situations the US government takes your passport because he is claiming Asylum. The gentleman did not ask him that but rather questions if he was illegally here multiple times which is extremely wrong on every level. While outside parking his car the same gentlemen was yelling at him again to move his car instead of asking politely. As for the sleeping, he slept in a dormitory of men. He said the bed was fine but there was a gentleman snoring extremely loud and he could not sleep. The breakfast he said was a feast of fruits, vegetables, and lots of homemade dishes. The woman cooking the food was very nice and helpful he said. The shower was clean he said and water was hot. Easy access off of highway 80 and in the downtown area. Overall this place received a 2 Star because it wasn't bad just the staff should not harass a person for their immigration status. He presented an ID which was questioned in return by the staff which is why they received a 2 Star.

Yelp
I have travelled the entire continental US relatively thorough over the past 3 years, and you can check my travel log on Google maps... For the amount of tourist destinations, especially for UTAH legal and American approved residents, the AVENUES hostel at the great low rate of $30 a night, is the best deal possible... Whether you are a Mormon, or considering joining the MORMON religion, traveling the snow, etc...

Yelp
Terrible, terrible place. They charged me twice. The soda machine kept taking my money. The lady at the front desk kept having me put more money in. Wouldn't give me back the right amount of money. Incompetent people working/living there. They do not have the accommodations that they are supposed to. I was charged nearly $80 instead of $27. Could've stayed in a nice hotel with a pool and hot tub for that price.

Steve T.

Yelp
My nephew and I stayed here for a ski trip. We got our own room with bunk beds, shower and toilet and it was $25 a night. The place was clean, safe, and definitely worth the budget price. In the mornings you can make your own eggs and toast that are provided. The room also came with a small fridge so you could stash some sodas or beer. Three computers are available for internet access or use the free wi-fi if you have your own laptop. Our room also had a small flat screen with DirectTV with Gol TV(soccer) as part of the package. Since Sundance was going on and a lot of things were booked or close to $200 a night, we were pleasantly surprised. We were there for a weekend of snowboarding and all we wanted was someplace clean to crash and we ended up finding something great.

Yelp
DO NOT STAY HERE Overpriced ($64/single room!!!), extremely disrespectful staff, bed bugs, horrendous experience. First off, you might as well be staying at a half way house. It is dark, I'll give it credit for being uncluttered, but it is far from "clean". The guests are almost entirely male (they live there long term - hence the half way house). Mostly nice, but some creepy as hell (I was a solo female traveler). I'm from Oakland, CA, have worked in homeless shelters for years, and am not phased by much. Second, I found a bed bug on me when I woke up. Yes, we all take this risk when staying at hotels, motels and hostels. The way it was handled was a nightmare, and I truly hope this place is shut down soon. They are crooks. I had paid for two nights, but obviously did not want to spend another one there. I went out to the front desk to let them know and ask for some bags to bag up my stuff. The "manager" came in, took a look at the bug, flicked it off my bed, and said "I don't see anything, I don't know what you are talking about"... "room 5 has zero bed bugs, got it?"... she then went around pointing at things in my room asking if they were mine. she even pointed at a quarter on the floor and asked if it was mine. it was so surreal. My blood was on the sheets still, but she kept on repeating herself, "room 5 has zero bed bugs". Was she trying to say the other rooms did have bugs? Then she said I must have brought the bugs in - which was impossible - this was my first night traveling. I was so upset because I had tried to be respectful and bring up the bugs quietly, I even waited until other guests had left before telling the front desk. I only wanted a refund for the night that I wouldn't be staying and bags for my stuff. They refused. It was not even noon, and they refused to give me a refund for the following night. I started crying and raised my voice in anger, telling them they should have some compassion - I had no where else to stay that night and now I would have to pay to launder or replace everything in my room. THEN one of the women threatened to call the cops on me for "causing a scene", and went to get another male staff to escort me off the premises. The guy who was called to escort me out was actually more understanding - he helped bag up my stuff and told me not to pay attention to the others. I wasn't able to get a refund. And I spent the rest of the day in a laundromat washing and drying and drying all of my belongings.

Yelp
This spot is not willing to accommodate travelers in need with plenty of vacancy. Why are you even open for business? Don't you want money? Wild....I would give it zero stars if possible.

Marcel E.

Yelp
The hostel is well-located, the staff is very friendly and helpful, the rooms look clean and are spacious, got TV and payTV too afaik (didnt use), it's quiet even on daytime. You got free wifi here, they order a cab for you if needed. But there are some things which surprised me: on the rooms, you got a key which seems decades old (works only with patience), the toilets, tough claim to be clean, have curtains instead of doors! The accommodation seems quite old and not well maintained, for laundry, you gotta go to the basement with a ceiling of like 5.5ft! (at least dryer is included in the 2.50 fee) and there is only one machine to use. You have to pay extra for towel, storage, extra blankets and in case you pay the nights by credit card, a one dollar fee appears out of nothing. I came from Yellowstone and just get myself rearranged here for a night so i am ok with the price, but if you consider to stay longer, you may choose better than avenue hostel... I'm not sure if i choose Ace Hostel again...

Yelp
I've stayed at a few hostels while traveling, and this one is by far the WORST hostel experience I've ever had. Somehow they couldn't find my reservation that I had made weeks in advance... I had even called a few days prior to arriving, to confirm just in case. I should have turned away right then. My original plan was to stay four nights, but I wasn't sure if I'd stay the whole time so I had asked if they'd pro-rate my card if I left early. They guy on the phone said yes they do, and I took him at his word. So I was pretty surprised when I checked out a couple days early and the guy at the counter said there'd be no refunds or anything! Absolutely ridiculous. On top of that, he was unbelievably rude & unapologetic. I don't know what this guy's deal was but his smugness made me want to punch him in the teeth. Terrible, terrible service. As far as pros, it IS in a pretty nice & safe part of town, and it's close to some coffee shops, a grocery store, and the downtown scene. They also have wifi so that's a plus. I agree with another reviewer; the place has such potential, but it falls painfully short of being a safe, valid option. Overall 1/5. If they'd have some decent front desk people with basic social skills and didn't give misinformation, then it wouldn't be so bad (even with the bathrooms that have curtains instead of doors), but there's just no excuse for such horrible service. Stay away from this place.

Yelp
I came here during a road trip from McPherson, KS to Seattle. Salt Lake City was my stopping point for the first night. My original plan was to sleep in my car, but seeing how sketch most parts of SLC are, I wasn't too comfortable with that idea anymore. So I decided to book a dorm room here. I've never stayed at a hostel before, so I had no clue what to expect. I had texted my friends that if they didn't hear from me in the morning, call the cops. But I only had one other roommate, and while he came in at 2 in the morning, he didn't bother me too much. The rooms have four bunk beds, and are what you might expect out of a dorm room. A closet, a desk, and a night stand. They didn't provide a blanket or towel, but the room was warm enough that I didn't need a blanket, and I just used a clean t shirt as a towel. The bathrooms were a little odd. There were no doors on the stalls, just curtains. Of course, there wasn't that much foot traffic, so I wasn't too concerned. The showers took a little finagling to get them on the right temperature, but then you'd get a sudden blast of cold water. Also, there were no paper towels for the sinks, and one sink didn't work. But other than that, they were clean, and I didn't feel like they could do much better for a communal bath room. Overall, I'd say this is a good place. Of course, I only stayed for one night to crash before the next leg of my trip, but it still was good. It's a lot different from a hotel (obvious statement is obvious), but it was still a good experience.

Yelp
The website of this place is deceiving. It is so dirty and run down. Management is a joke and hung up on me once I mentioned something about the cleanliness of the rooms. I felt so bad for letting my friend stay here I came back to go get him. The bald guy at the front desk gave me a hard time trying to get my deposit back? He said the guest had to stay the duration of the reservation to get it back! How does that make any sense? We paid in advance for the stay but yet trying to check out early and there's a problem. You would think a place would be happy for you to leave early so they can have other people stay there. It feels like you are in a mental hospital with some of the people staying there. It's basically like a homeless shelter but you pay nightly. Pay a litte bit more and stay at a hotel!

Yelp
Very hostile, don't take responsibility for their actions and are overly cheap in their accommodations. I have tried to give this hostel a chance, many, many times and each time I feel the same deep disappointment with unprofessional, uncaring staff. The latest situation that had happened was when me and my partner had arrived early in the morning, the front door was locked and there was no apparent notification of checking in. We went around the back and on our approach the staff, taking a cigarette break told us to get our IDs ready, they would be in to check us in. They took another 10 minutes before actually coming in and checking us in. In the room itself, they had no towels, no soap or any information on how to get these things. Which in of itself wouldn't merit a one star rating. What came next merited that rating. On checking out at 10a, we arrived to a locked door at the office. I then tried to call the front desk to see where they were on a terrible connection phone (later was told it was a magic jack phone - this place is cheap on everything) and got a voice mailbox is full. 15 minutes later the staff worker shows up and finally checks us out. I begin to tell her my frustrations and she lashed out at me immediately, defending her actions and not taking responsibility for her poor service the night prior and currently. This as mentioned, in different ways has happened before with this hostel with different employees. The same short tempered, deal with it - the hostel is always right attitude. I want to support the travel culture and hostels. They, when done right create an environment of shared communities. I however, can't recommend this hostel to anyone and would highly suggest couch surfing instead.

Yelp
I was here during Usana's international convention. Avenues is very affordable. Includes breakfast too! I believe there are a few people that are long term tenants of this hostel. They are very friendly and even cooked a few sausages to share with my wife and I. This hostel is about 30 minutes walk from Salt palace convention. About 7 minutes on Uber USD 5+ per trip on low hours, USD 16 peak. One of the person in charge, Clarke, may look like he is mean and Unfriendly, but deep inside, he is the nicest guy ever. He plays amazing piano too. I would think that he is a concert pianist hiding his talent. Internet is quite slow here however. Also when we were there, one of the bathrooms was not available. While another bathroom can be entered by someone else in the attached room. Can't be locked. So someone may enter while you're pooping.

Yelp
My first week was great wrote a review on booking.com. I needed to extend and the longer I stayed the worst it became. This is not directed at all staff there is awesome great staff. Some staff acted in a very unprofessional behavior. I was yelled at and safety concern were disregarded. I was told by staff it was about money and nothing can be done. I requested to speak to the owner throughout the evening and was told it has to wait. There was serious concerns and as a guest none of the concerns were addressed. I was also told by another staff that throats will be cut and bones will be crushed. I had nothing to do with the incident going on and reported this nothing was addresses. Reported a young man under the influence and possible danger to others and the person disclosed his mental health status and hallucinations and no one looked into it until the police and paramedics had to be called. I was accused of knowing where the owner is and the young man wanting his food stamp card from the owner which I was told was payment type for a room. I reported the aggressive behavior towards me and was told yeah the owner takes food stamp as payment not sure this is completely true can only attests to what I was told and what I witnessed. The young man ended up locked in a bathroom and there was a lot of yelling and commotion the man did drugs and after declining medical attention the individual was allowed to stay while under the influence and with command hallucination. Myself and another Veteran reported concerns of a hostile environment. I observed the guests being cussed at by staff in passing and just unethical practices and behaviors. The staff stated that they are there and getting no pay but work all day and night for 28.15 which is the cost of a bed. All these conversations and complaints are being discussed in front of guests and the staff complaining about the other staff and owner. This is not to say the owner is aware of everything that is going on. The establishment has a responsibility to an extent to ensure safety but I did not observe this. In fact some of the staff and guest appear not to be in a good place mentally and it's sad because the place is nice and clean. This is good for one night in passing but stay to yourself. Some of the staff is amazing. The place is exceptionally clean. Food accommodations in the morning an assortment of pastries and coffee. Refrigerators to keep your food. If you do not like the place you will not get your money back. There is added charge to use debit card (2.00) extra. Tread lightly!!!

Yelp
While covering the Sundance Film Festival and trying to make arrangements with friends with whom to stay with for a week in SLC, I kept on going back to this hostel over and over. First, of course, the prices are better than a hotel, as cheap as $15 for communal rooms (with various beds, 4-8), to $25 fro semi-private rooms (you only share bathroom), to $35 for private rooms (w/private bathroom)--and you can get better prices if you share the room with a friend in the last to categories. Second, the place is very clean, well kept-up. Third, the neighborhood looks good and safe. Fourth, is not far from downtown and its public transportation hub. And five, the manager/owner --and his staff--are very kind and very accommodating. Fifth, it has various computers with free Internet--which are available 24-7 in the lobby. Of course, customers vary but I did not have any complaint about the few people I met or ran into. Several seemed like me, visitors who were professionals or tourists trying to save a buck or two. I ended up staying here for a week and it was worth it. I highly recommended. Good luck in your stay and have a wonderful trip!

Madeleine J.

Yelp
When I stayed at Avenues, the people staying there were cool, the room was clean, and breakfast was complimentary. I have to say that the stay itself was pleasant. However, because I payed with my debit card, my security deposit was supposed to be refunded to this same card. I was never reimbursed for it. I called up after the 10 business day wait period, and the individual who answered the phone was very rude. This person kept talking over me while I tried to explain my situation, and wouldn't listen to me. After this individual contacted the owner of the hostel, I received a call back stating that there was absolutely nothing they could do about the security deposit that they failed to reimburse. Moral of the story, pay in cash so they can't rob you of your security deposit.

Carlos M.

Yelp
Creepy, not clean, and unfriendly staff. Overall, revolting. Also not very well located. Don't stay here!

Peter S.

Yelp
This place was horrible! It had strong mold smell when you walked in and was overall a messy place. People were coming and going drunk throughout the night and found a kid passed out, hugging the toilet the next morning in the communal bathroom. I got a private room for my last night before I left because I was bitten over 20 times by spiders!!!! I almost had to get medical attention because I was bitten all over my arms, hands and back. Disgusting place and unless your homeless or a junkie there is no reason to stay there.

Scott V.

Yelp
The worst customer service experience of my life was here. I made a reservation through Priceline in advance, and the front desk employee had no clue his company used this 3rd party for reservations. I gave him a copy of my reservation, which was then handed back to me saying he didn't know anything about this. If they had basic technology, like computers, this wouldn't have been a problem. The front desk employee later found the reservation in a book and made a derogatory comment about me making a reservation 5 months in advance. After other rude comments and unprofessional antics, it was best for me to just get out. The manager on duty, Jim was understanding of my complaint. Contacted the owner, San the next day, and he apologized for the behavior of this evening front desk employee, but said that I just needed to get to know him. What a joke. You would think a front desk employee here would do his homework and look into who is staying here each shift at a hostel. When I reminded him of basic customer service skills such as; "The customer is always right." His rude response was; "To a point."

Yelp
This is probably the best hostel in SLC. I regularly travel to Park City/Salt Lake city for ski trips and I wound up here after having a bad experience at another hostel in town called Camelot. The staff at Avenues are very friendly and helpful, the place is located in a nice neighborhood with lots of parking and grocery stores, etc nearby. I would definitely stay here again.

Nick C.

Yelp
Worst hostel I've ever stayed at. A total dump. The staff isn't friendly and would disappear for hours at a time. Added fees for everything. Stay anywhere else.

Ben H.

Yelp
You may want to avoid this place if you are not a seasoned traveler. After i came back from my ski outing my roommate from germany told me all his cash had been removed from his wallet. The only time he could pinpoint was when he went to use the bathroom and left his wallet behind another man had been rooming with us but had come in very late he had immediately checked out. Okay things like this happen, but the owner gave him a lecture about securing his valuables and did not let the police know. I then went and asked the night attendant about contacting the police she gave me bogus numbers i had to google the after hours branch and got a policemen who came over and took notes. Unfortunately this is well past eight hours so the suspect is long gone. Today i asked a question whether she had helped the police and her curt response was NO! I have a feeling that pros stay here looking for opportunities

Yelp
Well this place is not really a hostel, or not an international one at least, there are no rules around lenght of stay orout of state ID, so this place gets filled up with geriatrics looking for a cheap place to stay and other homeless, or down on their luck locals, this means zero atmoshpere, and lots of weird people hanging around. I stayed here for a few days, and just found the place strange, people continuously tried to bum money or cigarettes off me. The facilities are pretty crap as well, showers go cold half way through, and only have curtains so not private at all.

Yelp
I booked this hostel because of the location in the avenues. I really wished that I didn't go here and just got a hotel room or went to a different hostel in town. When I got to my room it was very dirty, not sure if they even cleaned the sheets. During my sleep at night I was woken up by a biting sensation on my legs. I looked down to see red marks all over my legs! I could not believe it, I actually had been the victim of the bugs! I asked for a refund from the owner, and he told me that it was me who brought the bugs in and he has never had a problem with them. The only problem with that story is I talked to other guests there and they had the bites on them too. This place is disgusting, and I have never seen such horrible customer service. All the owner would do is point to the no refunds sign and say he isn't responsible for anything. This is just the worst place to stay in Utah. Makes the trip to such a beautiful place miserable.
