The True Tale of the Philadelphia Cheesesteak - AFAR

"A New Jersey–based bakery known for producing the chewy, slightly crusty hoagie rolls descended from old‑world Italian bread that many cheesesteak vendors prize as the ideal vehicle for dripping meat." - Ariel Ramchandani

My go to spot for a good sandwich they have a good menu fresh bread. You can also make a custom sandwich with fresh cuts my go to the chicken buffalo sandwich really good.

Google
Great selection of pastries, cakes & meats. My review is based off of hoagie quality. I ordered the godfather. Not much meat at all & dry! hoagie consisted of mayo oil & extra vinegar) Also, the lettuce was overtaking the amount of meat. $10 hoagie for $14

Wanted to order a Stromboli Tray for a christmas party 27 hours in advance and the website had a price of $45.99 so I waited on hold for 6 minutes and when female employee picked up she told me it was $54.99 is that ok? I hesitantly said but your website says its $9 less, to which she replied yeah thats wrong. As I gathered my thoughts for about 5 seconds she asks do you want to place the order or no. I asked to speak to a manager and was placed on hold again for about 3 minutes. Female manager picks up and I explained the situation and she said yeah the website is old and those are not the prices. I replied well who updates that and how do I get the price listed. She replies I have no idea who updates those prices do you want a Stromboli or no. I stated yeah I wanted to order the 3 Stromboli tray for the price listed to which she became irate saying im not gonna stand here and argue with you. Very unprofessional. And on top of that the owner replies to my review with: the website has been under contriction and its a 3rd party website. No it's obviously not its Aversa's website which doesnt update their prices. Do better!

I’ve been using Aversa’s for the past 3 years for my family’s annual Christmas party. They never disappoint, the food is always perfect, the prices are reasonable and the staff are always friendly and helpful. Every year I give them my party theme and order a 1/2 sheet cake that is always perfectly decorated based on whatever that theme is. I will continue to make them my “go to” for party food. Thank you for another great year!

UPDATE ** Absolutely awful customer service. I’ve gone into this business several times in the past to buy rolls when I was short and never had an issue. Today, I called to ask if I could purchase some rolls, and the way the kid on the phone laughed at me was completely mocking and disrespectful — like my question was a joke to him. The tone alone was enough to be offensive. When I asked him what the problem was with me simply asking, he rudely replied, ‘I don’t know why you’re calling me last minute,’ as if I had done something wrong just by reaching out. When I asked whether he thought that was good customer service, he actually said, ‘I think it is, yes.’ After I posted my review, the bakery responded publicly trying to reframe the situation by saying they couldn’t provide all the bread because they didn’t want to disappoint other customers. That was never the issue. I don’t care that they couldn’t give me the bread — I care that I was laughed at, spoken down to, and treated with disrespect for asking a simple question. Now they’re trying to change the narrative instead of taking responsibility for the rude behavior. This place has been around a long time and their quality is good, which makes this even more disappointing — but after this experience, I will never return. What a foolish way to damage a long-standing reputation.

Google
I've searched for the green leaf cookies around me for years & finally found them here last year. So of course I had to take the 40 minute drive again this year to get some more plus a bunch of other goodies. Everything was fresh & delicious.

JesMarie

Google
Tried the double chocolate cake and the apple cake. But amazing! Look forward to trying more!

Carla S.

Google
Huge selection of sweets of fresh made pastas. They have a great deli and fresh made pizza, rolls, and even canned/jarred goods. You can get freshly cooked chicken cutlets, eggplant, assorted salads etc. The list is endless. Everything is delicious! And they are well staffed with a friendly group. We visit a few times a week!

Yelp
Stopped in 90 minutes before the lunch time rush! First timer for ordering a sub there. Ordered the Italian sub. I believe it was considered medium with seeds. I was asked do I want this or that on it etc. I also got a pint of their macaroni salad. Total was approximately $19.30! I got it home and the roll felt stale and hard!? Where's the cold cuts? Wimpy amount of meats and over powering cheese! PU! We had to pull the cheese off as it ruined it! The macaroni salad was avg tasting at best! Take a pass on ordering their Italian sub! Two thumbs down!!

Yelp
I ordered a strawberry shortcake for Easter brunch and when I went in to pick it up, I was wowed by the variety of food, treats, baked goods, etc. They have soooo much stuff!!! It was extremely busy too and someone in line told me she loves this bakery and always orders from them. The line was incredibly long - even for those who ordered ahead. The staff did their best to keep up. I appreciated the pleasant nature of the employees. Oh, and my strawberry shortcake was delicious!

Yelp
My birthday cake this year was stupendous ! We'd never bought a cake or any pastries from Aversa's for some unknown reason... I wanted an Italian rainbow cake since Im obsessed with the bites. As you can see from my photos , this baby was a beautiful sight to behold! Super fresh cake and rich, perfect chocolate! All five of us who indulged were extremely happy campers!!! What was strange was that it wasn't made with almond flavoring?!! Id absolutely order one again with the request for the above aforementioned. SUMPTUOUS !!!!!

Yelp
A great one stop shop for a quick dinner, dessert, and treats to stock your pantry with! I had a few slices of pizza and a cannoli which I really enjoyed. My favorite was the mushroom and cheese slice. The cannoli was amazing, it surpassed my expectations!!! The prices are very reasonable and the service was good. It's a huge store so it may be a bit overwhelming when you first walk in but then it becomes exciting when you realize all of the great things you can purchase here. They also have fresh baked bread!!! So many awesome options, check them out for yourself!

Yelp
I drove from Haddon Heights to Blackwood for the food at Aversa's Italian Bakery. BUT NO MORE. Out of the last three visits, I have come home with the wrong prepared food twice. I go to counter with my ticket number and I ask for help at the prepared food cases. I point to the Eggplant Parm and ask for 3 portions. I then move down the case and look at the cucumber/tomato salad and the prepared pastas. The girl gets the Eggplant Parm boxed up, puts the other items into containers and I go home. Twice, instead of Eggplant Parm, she boxed up Lasagna. The ticket on the box says EGGPLANT The second time it happened I called the store to complain and no one picked up the phone. I called 4 times and no one picked up the phone. I guess you can't complain about service if no one answers......It was then that I realize I'm not buying freshly made meals. They buy from vendors or companies who prepare the day before and deliver to them. If it doesn't sell that day the food is refrigerated for the next day. I am buying what any parent would call leftovers -- prepared, refrigerated for sale and then refrigerated again if it doesn't sell..........Rather expensive leftovers. From now on I call over to Bruno's or Rexy's and get food prepared NOW for NOW and serve my family fresh meals and NOT LEFTOVERS until they are truly leftovers. Shame on Aversa's for employing people who don't know food and for not caring enough to answer the phone.

Charles F.

Yelp
Bought torpedo rolls today for over $7.00 per dozen. They tasted like day old rolls. Half of them were so weirdly misshapen that they were trashy. Unfortunately I can't leave less than 1 star. I will never go back to Aversa's again. If you need rolls you should go anywhere else.

Emidio B.

Yelp
My wife pickup some cutlet hoagies yesterday. I haven't say it was the worst sandwich's we ever had. The cutlets were old and dry to a point you couldn't even chew them. Small portions of meat. And broccoli rabe , we looked at each other and said we are going to give them a break for now,, It's a heat or miss there. The sandwich prep guy should know the difference if the meat was hard or wet , for yesterday it was less than a zero

Cindy G.

Yelp
Wow! Best pizza ever!! Didn't taste anything else yet but this was yelp worthy! Definitely going back for more!

Yelp
What a treat it was to find Aversa's Italian Bakery was right next door to where I was getting a scan done! I got a half shooter hoagie which is turkey with Italian pepper shooters. I would had liked some crunchy water vegetables with this to fill it up a bit more but I am not going to complain. Turkey was tasty, sliced very thin, almost shredded, along with cooper sharp cheese and of course the pepper shooters. The bread is obviously made at Aversas and is a top notch semolina roll. Also got some desserts here that we are going to munch into later tonight. Definitely a must try spot if you are hungry and in the turnersville area!

Yelp
Anything less than 5 stars would be crazy. Can I give them 10 stars? Just came here and I was like a kid in a candy shop. They have all the best of Italian everything .. and I would know as I lived ten years in Hoboken, making my weekly Italian deli route (Georgio's, Dom's, Losurdo's, M&P, Fiore's, and more!) among some of the greatest in America! This is a market full of Italian goodies and even a frozen stuffed pasta ravioli and sauce sasection, huge incredibly delicious deli, with copious prepared foods, best bread in south Jersey by miles, Italian cookies and cake desserts, pizza and pastas and sauces and dried goods and cakes, cookies and more!! Oh my! It's an Italian food HEAVEN!! It's 42 years old and friendly as can be! I did not know what to eat as I wanted to simultaneously sample everything! So I got an egg salad and a sliced high top roll that is the most delicious bread I ever ate and literally couldn't stop eating .. I ate ALL the egg salad... 0.6 lb in one sitting, it was THAT good, best I ever had!! And I would dip in with that mist incredible bread!! I took a slice of pepperoni pizza and tomato slice home to go as the sweet lady in front of me recommended it, as well as the cinnamon buns that are favorite among locals. Yumm, neighbors I'm bringing over more dessert as these are only are sold 6 at a time and usually sell out by mid afternoon- lucky guilty me, I bought the last 6 . My husband got the veggie 12 inch hoagie which was epic! I wasn't even hungry and kept taking bite after bite! This became an early dinner for sure! My eyes were way too big for my stomach and I'll have to return a hundred times to just begin eating my way through this amazing Italian deli!! The ambiance could not be cuter, cozier and kinder!! I cannot wait to return. No wonder my husband mentioned their name to me at least 5 times that day, knowing I'd be in the area and had never been.

Yelp
Let ve this place. Great Italian prepared foods and a bakery full of sugary treats. I go more for the prepared foods. Definitely worth the trip.

Ethel W.

Yelp
My first time at Aversa's. I bought Nonnis Meatball Parmesan hoagie which was supposed to have sauce and cheese. My sandwich did not have sauce or cheese, just meatballs. Just imagine how dry this sandwich was! Not sure if I will return

Yelp
I had their food twice and it was great each time. I actually went in the second time to pick up my order and they had a wide variety of things. Like a cute little deli/grocery store/bakery. The staff was extremely nice and they have a good amount of ppl working to accommodate your needs! I got the Italian sub and everything about it was gr8! Definitely want to go back and try their pizza.

Pasquale Y.

Yelp
One of the best if not the very best Italian specialty stores I've ever been to. Quite a variety of great products especially the bread. I highly recommend this spot.

Terrie M.

Yelp
Fantastic cookies and special baked goods. We also love their cold pizza; rolls and bread. Birthday cakes are 2 1/2 stars...also 1/2 cakes are usually dry.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Very good subs, or hoagies as they call them in this area. Service is friendly and they have a nice selection of items.

Yelp
When are you coming in the Absecon area ? We need and like your real bread. Hersonski family

Christine T.

Yelp
I had the Tony Soprano and it was good but I've had better. It could have been filled a little more. The rolls were great though and their baked goods are delicious.

Chow H.

Yelp
I have been getting my bread and rolls from Aversa for over 15 years. I happily wait in line on Christmas Eve every year to make sure I am serving my guests the freshest bread for our Christmas get togethers. But this year, I know that they sold me day-old rolls. I was in line at 8 am, at the counters by 8:45. I know what their rolls are like the day I buy them, and I know that they lose freshness by the next day unless I freeze them (they always freeze well). When I got home I had day old rolls. So I ran to ShopRite and bought different ones, definitely fresher than what Aversa sold me. I was so disappointed by Aversa that I most likely will not stand in line anymore on Christmas Eve.

Constantino P.

Yelp
Best hoagies in south jersey period you can't beat their French, breadsticks, and torpedo. They sell everything from gift baskets to prepared foods. I can't say enough about Aversa's bakery. The place is spotless it is very well kept.
google avatar

Kayla H.

Yelp
It took me WAY too long to visit this bakery in person after years of family and friends sharing their foods. SO MUCH VARIETY and reasonable prices as well. Their cannolis are on the same epic level as Termini Bros in Philly (this is not something I say lightly!), and their pizza is pretty solid too. I plan to return very soon, especially because they do such a great job of distancing out customers during the pandemic. I also plan to get one of their beautifully decorated cakes for our next occasion that I'm too lazy to bake for! :)
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
Enjoyed a delicious veggie sandwich Breaded Eggplant, Cooper Sharp cheese , broccoli rabe , olive oil on a seeded roll . Bought a few goodies to take home . Also grabbed a slice of tomato pie and veggie square slice both we ate cold and they were equally delicious. Will be back soon .

Nicole L.

Yelp
Horrible experience at Aversa's Brigantine. First they couldn't find the cake I ordered and that was a 20-minute ordeal. Then, the cake is opened for a baby shower and is supposed to say "Congratulations!" and it says "Congratulalio!" ARE YOU KIDDING?! We decorated it anyways. No refund unless brought back in (the shower was in 10 minutes); horrible customer service from a nasty woman on the phone that told me I should just laugh it off! Find a different bakery.

Beth R.

Yelp
Great Bakery! Bread and rolls are great as are there cakes and cookies. But there is so much more. You can pick up your whole dinner there or if you just want a pizza for lunch. Everything I've ever had there is delicious.

Yelp
My hubby stopped at Aversa's today and saw they had stuffed artichokes, which I make myself bc my family loves them. I've been sick so my hubby thought he'd be saving me. The stuffed artichokes he bought were absolutely completely different then the way I prepare them (which takes me hours). These artichokes were a knock off cheap version. Listen, I absolutely love artichokes and I will even eat them without being stuffed. But my kids love the way I prepare them, stuffed and cooked the way my Italian Gram taught me (Naples). My kids wouldn't eat these artichokes that my hubby bought from Aversa's. They cut them down so small and stuffed them with stove top stuffing?!? Then they charged a fortune for them. Omg. Now I know if I decided to sell the stuffed artichokes I prepare I could make a fortune. (I wouldn't do that to people though.) I give 3 Stars only bc the artichokes were fresh. But listen to artichoke lovers who know how to steam, then stuff and bake: Go to the Italian Market in Philly!!! You get HUGE FRESH ARTICHOKES for 25 cents a piece (4 for a $1) Aversa's: Shame on u for charging so much!

Lost S.

Yelp
Everything I've had here has been awesome. Vast selection of meats, cheeses and bakery items. Great customer service as well.
google avatar

Tanya J.

Yelp
Ordered my 9 year old niece a birthday cake and let me just say we were not pleased with it!!!! Ordered pink and white, got pink red gold and white!!! Asked for buttercream got whipped! Will not be going back anytime soon. Spoke with Rachel, she was extremely nice but didn't offer any resolution other than come back, but party was at 4:00 Didn't have time to turn around

C H.

Yelp
Although an amazing place to get all-things Italian, the fact the employees are miserable outweighs this positive. It is not a one-off experience, literally every time. It is as if they feed off of each other and their rudeness. I don't ask for much when it comes to getting served here, but they really need to take a class in customer service. Sorry I have to give it just one star.

Allison S.

Yelp
Best Italian hoagies around. This is a cannot miss neighborhood gem. Make sure to ask for hot peppers.
google avatar

Anjee S.

Yelp
I saw several people without masks entering and exiting the back room, where the freshly baked goods are kept. There are plenty of places that handle/serve food, wearing masks while they prepare/serve food to the general public during a pandemic.
google avatar

Yelp
So happy to find this place! For 6 months I have been trying to locate bakery that is like a bakery back home. I finally found it in Aversa's! I was eating my loaf of Italian bread on the way back to my boyfriends house! I was literally able to get all of my needs in one place. Everything was fresh from the rolls, bread, cookies and cannolis! It was nice to see food there as well in case I need an Italian market. Everyone was very friendly also, and the line moved faster then expected. I can't wait to come back and try more stuff.

Rose K.

Yelp
Aversa Bakery has been around for years, but my question is how much of their pastries are made on the premises? Anyway, I try and stay away from those awesome, beautifully decorative pastries, my purchase is in their rolls. I think Aversa's has the best rolls in South Jersey. If you want a great dinner roll for your spaghetti and meatballs, get yourself over to Aversa Bakery.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
Everything here is absolutely fantastic. My boyfriends friend orders from here almost every football Sunday - everything from their soups to their dips is phenomenal, and their tuna and chicken salad is to die for. Never been disappointed.
google avatar

Carol A.

Yelp
Ordered a 1/2 sheet cake for my daughters baby shower on 10/4/21 for pickup date 10/17/21 . Arrived this morning only to find out the cake was never made for my event. After waiting for a period of time I was told it could not be located. I was asked to come back later in the day to pick up the cake. I explained my event was in 1 hour. I was called by the bakery to come back to pick up the cake . The cake looked awful and it was frozen solid. The restaurant staff had a hard time cutting the cake. Very disappointed .
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
I got a tiramisu, it was $26 and it was so delicious, but it didn't have much coffee flavor or lady fingers which most tiramisu's have. Over all it was really good.

Carol P.

Yelp
omg! im 6 months pregnant and I wanted aversas cheesecake so bad! I sent my fiancé there to grab it right before they closed. it was the worst cheesecake I have ever tasted idk if it went bad or it was sitting for awhile but it tasted like moldy milk and feet! my fiancé got food poisoning from their jelly rqsberh cake roll!! very disappointed in this!! we've been going there a long time and this was by far hands down unacceptable
google avatar

Neha D.

Yelp
Stopped in for an authentic Italian Hoagie. Super disappointing. The chicken hoagie was cold, the bread was extremely chewy.- they didn't even bother to heat up the hoagie and did so only when we told them it was un- eatable. We had high expectations from such an authentic place and were left extremely disappointed. Better stick to Primos.
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
Large selection of pre-made food items at the deli counter. Good variety of cheese and meat. Fantastic bakery items. Love the cupcake cakes. Not a fan of the pizza, etc. Chicken parm is yummy.
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
ordered and italian tuna sandwich with cooper sharp cheese, may, lettuce, tomato, onion and vinegar.... Instead I received, tuna in water which is disgusting, a few pieces of see thru cheese which you cant taste, No vinegar at all and barely a dab of mayo. You can imagine what this tastes like. I called to complain and didnt get a chance as I was on hold for 3 minutes (when I was there 5 minutes ago the store was empty). Herendous! (I dont want to take away from the bread as their bread is good)

M J.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed at the stale items we have purchased here in the last months. Cannolis STALE AND SOFT SHELL. Obviously 2 days old if you are a cannoli lover like we are. We know the difference. Same thing with pastries and cream puffs. We will not be returning. It's a shame because apparently they didn't know how to handle expansion!!!! Come on Aversa's! Remove your day old and 2 day old items and sell at a discount. Don't sell day old at fresh prices and give customers the choice!
google avatar

Kellie M.

Yelp
Came here 3 days in a row and had to call 2 other days for a dish they usually have but claimed they never have it... I also noticed from going in day after day buying things that they either don't replace something the next day or it's super old from the week before. The older lady behind the lunch meat counter with terrible teeth is extremely rude. Only way to pin point who she is. Sorry... but yeah It's unfortunate because I like ordering for lunch. I've had breakfast twice and the eggs were green so that's a no go. Even though they will tell you they have the best egg sandwiches. How about you don't leave them under a heat lamp? Why can't they be fresh. Disgusting!
google avatar

Alex N.

Yelp
Great rye bread and pumpernickel if there's any left! Their high top and flat Italian loaves are delicious too. I like to grab a couple slices of the tray pizza and sit outside for lunch when I'm around.
google avatar

Keith D.

Yelp
Where do I start, how about they have the best Meatball Parm sandwich I've ever consumed, I eat here one day each week, not a rip off either. I like how the workers don Philly Sports gear too, so when the fraud Cowboys fans, not from Dallas of course, come in hopefully it bothers them.

M F.

Yelp
Order a cake and because the girl did not write down what I want I end up paying for a cake that I didn't want. I stopped coming here for this reason but gave it another shot. Ill go back to not coming here.

Janet B.

Yelp
The most delicious Italian hoagie in the universe ! The Italian meats and the seeded bread is to die for . Goodbye Primo on 168 . You should have never changed ownership because Aversa blows you out of the water . Real Italian and just excellent overall . I purchased a Ricotta cheese cake , hoagies , steak and cheese Stromboli today and I could have bought the entire store . Aversa is that good ! I recommend everything !!!
google avatar

Gene E.

Yelp
Nice bakery and deli. A lot of variety and good eats. The service is good but it can take a while to serve some of the pretentious douche bag customers that frequent here. (We all know the type) So you may have to wait a bit and hold your place if they are not taking numbers or said douche bags will also attempt to cut the line. The girls at the counter must be conditioned to them because they handle it very professionally.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
This is our 3 or 4th time driving the 45 minutes to the bakery. Previous visit everything was very good. Today everything we purchased appears to be stale. The brownies tasted dry and old. The napoleon cake my wife tried eat was hard and stale. The pizza was excellent but everything else was very disappointing.
google avatar

Harley F.

Yelp
I got the meatball sandwich. It was very good, lots of flavor. Only complaint is that it was cold :( that is an easy fix though. Also confusing was the menu listed salads but when we placed our order they told us they don't make salads??
