"Founded in 1987, in a Venetian-era building dating back to 1530, Avli started out as a restaurant serving high-quality food made from local ingredients. Lying in Rethymno’s lovely pedestrian-only old town, its courtyard garden was planted with palms, bougainvillea and vines, and decorated with objects from medieval villas and abandoned workshops: stone mill wheels, antiquated farming tools and restored wooden furniture. Today the restaurant is known throughout Crete for its creative cuisine. But what many people don’t know is that Avli also offers various sumptuous suites, which have been added since 2005. Delightfully extravagant, each combines the building's traditional elements (stone walls, beamed ceilings, Venetian arches) with modern comforts and Baroque-kitsch décor. Best suited to couples, Avil makes a perfect escape for a romantic weekend or a couple of blissful days of indulgence at the end of a Crete holiday. We absolutely loved our stay here! Fabulous location in the heart of old town Rethymno, just a short walk to everything—fabulous restaurants, shops, the Fortress, harbor and beaches. The staff was so friendly and hospitable, Nikos especially was extremely helpful. We had an early transfer to get to our ferry and they brought our breakfast the night before. Speaking of breakfast, for the two mornings that we were able to eat in the restaurant, we were delighted by the offerings of traditional Cretan tastes and the one of the best omelettes I’ve ever had! The garden terrace was an absolute joy, with its gorgeous plants and whimsical art. The decor of the entire establishment was so unique, artsy and luxurious. So much attention to detail! Top notch stay—highly recommend!

It’s a great hotel with very helpful and friendly staff. It’s clean and rooms are comfortable, they think about everything. Breakfast in Avli restaurant is a pleasure. It was a great choice to book it here. Thank you Avli team for making our holiday so nice :)

Absolutely gorgeous property with an amazing staff and so much charm! It was wonderful to stay in old town and so close to everything and with our Green Suite around the corner from reception, it made us feel like we were locals with our own little apartment in town. The food was great as well! I will definitely be coming back here!

this lovely boutique hotel is in 12th century building. The staff is very helpful and giving of their time and energy. The location is a bit difficult to find but once found it is charming. Rooms are spacious.

We could not have found such a perfect location in the very centre of the old town of Rethymnon for a special birthday celebration. The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful so a big thank you to Stelios and Nikos. The suite was excellent in all respects and just a few short steps from the Raki Bai Raki restaurant where we enjoyed our wonderful evening meals. Breakfast was served in the Avli Restaurant where both the selection and quality were second to none. We will return to this luxurious establishment and perhaps at a time when the Avli Gastronomic restaurant is also open so we can sample the delights there.

We originally had a regular room with no balcony but switched to the “Blue” executive suite. Great choice! Excellent sized room and very well appointed for our 5 night stay. The team at Alvi is wonderful! Very helpful and attentive to whatever you need. All of the rooms are a climb of stairs so be aware. Not a problem unless you are needing/wanting an elevator. The room had a great balcony for relaxing and was right along the bustling alleyway below. Easy walk to anything. We were fully warned of potential noise from the bar/pub below us to the right but truly it was never an issue for us. Great stay in a great location with great service and people!

After a wonderful day of wine tasting and food at the Avli restaurant we stayed at the Avli lounge apartments for the night. The room was beautiful and spacious with a large spa bath. Excellent huge comfy bed. |Wonderful peaceful quiet night.

We had an incredible time here! We were in the Blue Room, which as mentioned is above the Irish Pub . This worked for us, as we stayed up late and really enjoyed that pub. Other visitors may prefer the other rooms, which are quieter. Our room was stunning, clean, and very spacious. The breakfast is fantastic! It gives you a great sampling of Cretan foods. We also greatly enjoyed the wine tasting. Nikos, the sommelier, is very experienced and highly knowledgeable about Cretan wines. The dinners were amazing- the restaurant here is the best in Rethymno by far. Everything is very well prepared and with very fresh ingredients. The food feels really healthy, and is so tasty! The staff are really accommodating and helpful . I definitely want to come back and stay again!
