Olympia needs additional training, particularly in customer service. She had a very dismissive attitude during my visit and was racially biased. She asked me to move off the mattress I was trying so she could assist another customer who had just walked in. I was kind enough to move, but she did not offer me another mattress to try or say “sorry for the inconvenience” or “thank you” for moving.
The other mattress I wanted to try was also occupied, but she did not ask that customer to move. She just ignored me while I stood there awkwardly waiting and continued assisting the other white/Asian customers.
The experience made me feel uncomfortable and singled out. It honestly felt like a microaggression — similar to when Black people were made to give up their seats on the bus if a white person wanted to sit down.
To make it worse, no one came back to follow up or see how I was doing. I guess it was too close to closing time for them to care. I felt uncomfortable there as a Black person, and I definitely received the least attention of all the potential customers in the store. The mattresses are okay, but after that incident, I immediately decided against this brand and bought a Purple mattress, which I like better. Plus, the people at the store where I bought the Purple mattress (as well as Saatva and all the other mattress stores I tried besides this one) treated me as an equal.
I won’t spend money on this brand — and certainly not during Black History Month. Not inclusive, just discriminatory!
