On the Grid : Avondale Park

"The historic 40-acre Avondale Park situated on the slopes of Red Mountain has always been a respite of sorts. In the mid-1900s, the area attracted weary travelers who would relax near a spring-fed grotto pool. The park also served as home to the first incarnation of the Birmingham Zoo. After falling into a long period of decline beginning in the 1970s, the city of Birmingham undertook a $2.88 million restoration initiative in 2011. In 2013, the newly refurbished park was unveiled to the public. Today, Avondale Park features a WPA-era outdoor amphitheater, The Villa—a recently renovated 2,400 square foot secluded pavillion, duck pond, walking track, tennis courts, three youth baseball/softball fields, and free WiFi throughout the park and adjacent Avondale Library." - Lewis Communications

This place is absolutely amazing. EVERY SINGLE THING about munchies on 5th I literally loved. The restaurant is very clean the staff is very friendly and helpful and the FOOD WAS PERFECT. I ordered the deluxe cheese burger and fries and sweet tea and when I left I ordered a piece of Red velvet cake. There was so much food left over I had lunch the next day. They play the newest music and I just ate and danced. They have outside seating and a really nice bar area. This was my first time to munchies and I enjoyed myself so much. I recommend checking out munchies on 5th you won't be disappointed. I know I'm a return customer.

♿️ Very nice park with lots of history behind it. Walked the trail around the pond several times, it was small, so it takes a little bit to get your steps in. But, the natural scenery...trees, the stone steps, the rocks, the amphitheater, the rose garden, the tiny babbling brook are all worth stopping to check out. The old statue is gone and they've replaced it with a bronze statue of "Miss Fancy" the elephant and a plaque telling you it once was the B'ham Zoo. This is easily wheelchair ♿ accessible and friendly as the majority is flat. There are plenty of benches to sit in the shade or by the pond. There are quite a few covered areas with tables as well. I found another yellow crested heron at this park amd that made my day. They are a sign of good luck and prosperity. And so far, I've seen them in every park but 2 that I've been to recently. It's definitely worth checking out if you haven't been yet. There's plenty of parking, a softball field, and some other stuff that I never made it over towards bc I found a secret set of stone steps and I'll just let it keep being a secret so others will go try to find them. 🤣

This is one of my favorite parks. Close to where we live and the small lake and surrounding wooded area attracts lots of birds, including the occasional rarity. I visit there at least monthly. The walking path around the lake is flat, paved and easy for anyone to navigate. There’s a well maintained play area, a ball field and multiple picnic tables, including several pavilions.

Very nice park. Clean and well maintained. No restrooms open. A multitude of homeless people. I feel bad for them, but would be concerning, if you were there with children. Obviously some mental issues going on with some of them.

Beautiful park full of diverse wildlife. Very clean, calm and enjoyable. Highly recommend.

Stopped here for a picnic, and fun break. Park was nice with tables and gazebos. The park restrooms were closed, but there is a public library in the same parking lot. There were unhoused individuals, but they didn’t bother us.

I never visited Avondale Parks, even though it was very close to my house. It is a pleasant location for kids, families, and friends.

Google
Avondale Park a nice area, pet friendly with ducks and a lake with plenty fish, also has a playground for the kids. You can also watch a baseball game on the field if they playing!! And if you need to read a book it's a library there but if you hungry it's restaurants and entertainment right across the street in walking distance.

Yelp
What's not to love about Avondale Park. It's centrally located in the heart of the Avondale community and super conveniently located near some of the happening spots in town! Picturesque views are the backdrop. Wrapped into some historical facts make up this landmark. If you want to walk, run or even fly a kite , Avondale park is calling your name. Say "hello" to Miss Fancy while you're there!

Yelp
LET ME FLOWER YOU WITH LOVE! A beautiful park with a play area for kids, walking trails and lots of gorgeous trees and other plants. A couple months ago, the park added a new addition to its entrance. From what I have gathered a couple years ago, Avondale park had an elephant on display. But now flash forward to years later we now have a gorgeous elephant statue. This park is a delight to our local area. I believe that in the summer time they offer movies outside in their amphitheater area. A great way to keep the kiddos entertained! What is your favorite part of Avondale park?

Yelp
A great park in the Birmingham, Alabama area. It exudes a tranquillity that cleanses your soul. This is the kind of park that children will remember in memories and adults will be very happy such a place was available to them. The park is located in the Avondale section of Birmingham and I would highly recommend a visit here.

Yelp
I adore this park. I actually live in the Southside/Glen Iris area but I will literally drive/bike over to this park before utilizing any of the other parks on my side of town. I mean, it was the city's zoo location for years. The only thing keeping me from giving it a full five stars is the killer ducks. They will literally attack you unprovoked without warning. Birmingham's best park IMO.

Yelp
We came here for a play that Children's Theatre our on called "The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus". This is a nice park to bring kids to. There is space that you can walk/exercise around the lake. Watch out for ducks/ geese (you're in their territory). The space we were in is made up like a small amphitheater. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Yelp
Recently my friend and I had some time to kill and we found our way to Avondale Park. It's a nice park that's complete with a small lake that has lots of birds, ducks, and other wildlife. Over and above the pond there's an amphitheater, two baseball diamonds and even a playground! The park is located across the street from Avondale, which is home to several really good restaurants and the Avondale brewery.

Yelp
I had not been to the park most of my time in Birmingham. 10+ years ago, I don't know that it would have even been on my radar. But when we were finally able to check this place out and hear the history of it, it is one of the coolest parks in Birmingham. I had parked in the lot a few times before actually coming to the park. Since then, we have gone on walks, attended events and even had a picnic out here. My brother and sister and law had their wedding reception at Avondale Villa at the top of the park. Which was a fantastic venue! I heard the rose garden is going to be re-done which was a big part of it back in the day. The scenery is very nice for a walk around their very walkable paths. And with the baseball fields, it makes it into an ultimate family park!

Yelp
I'm here at least once a day walking the dog. It's perfectly located, and it's a great place to go for a picnic, a walk, or when you need an outdoor office (a table in one of the picnic shelters, for example). It's not five stars because the pond is usually covered in algae, you have to dodge a lot of goose poop, and when there's heavy rain the pond overflows or the drain at the front of the park backs up and renders parts of the walking track impassable. They're working on all this, though, in anticipation of the archery competition for the World Games. It could also do with a few more garbage cans. It's still a great park, though, and its proximity to the Avondale library and all the restaurants and stuff on 41st make it a fantastic place to spend a lot of time.

Yelp
OH MY. After reading the reviews on Yelp to this park, I thought it might be a good place to check out. I'm giving them some benefit of the doubt due to heavy rainfall a few days prior. However, that doesn't change the fact the park was completely run down, the concrete trails were covered up or non existent. Definitely don't recommend visiting this place.. unless you have kids the small playground area looked okayish

Yelp
Location, location, location! This place was here long before all the other places that have popped up nearby, but what a great location. Great place to take your dog for a walk, or explore the hillside where the old Birmingham Zoo use to be located. You can still make out what would have been locations where animals have been. Very kid friendly as well. Amphitheater hosts all sorts of events throughout the year including music and movies in the park. Plenty of afternoons parking can be a little hard to come by as they may be playing some little league baseball games. But a few circles will typically find you a spot. Located on the edge of the park is the Avondale Library. Across the street is a huge selection of restaurants and bars (Parkside, Fancy's, Melt, Avondale Brewing, Saw's, Saturn, etc). Really a great place to come a little bit before dinner to take a walk and explore. Then it's off for dinner and drinks at one of the local favorites in the area. With all of the new in Birmingham (Railroad park area) don't forget about some of the older still relevant cool places...come check this park out!

Yelp
An incredible spot. As I am an Olympic level athlete, I was using this area as my training ground. I clocked 37 mph last week. I was like a gazelle. Graceful, but with blistering pace. The grass is immaculate. 'Tis so soft on my flat, paddle-like feet. Being that I am a student of Sokrates, I hosted an open discussion in the amphitheater. To my dismay, I was the only attendee. This did not halt me though, I began to have a debate with myself on the premise that I played both sides. This did not bode well with other visitors of the park that gave me nasty glares. This was saddening, but we move. All in all, visit this park if you enjoy parks!

Yelp
My favorite park in Birmingham! You know how in movies, there is always that one place where someone knows where to find someone when they have disappeared? Well, Avondale Park is that place for me. I call it my "thinking place". It is so peaceful and serene here, and I enjoy going here to clear my mind after a long day at work. I feed the ducks and geese sometimes, and sit by the water on one of the many benches. There is a walking track as well that you can walk on. Avondale Library sits next to the park, so you can venture up there, check out a book, and come back to the park to read it. There's even an amphitheater on site that hosts different family friendly throughout the year (Jazz in the Park, Movies in the Park, Park in the Park, etc.) Summary: Avondale Park is a great free, natural resource to take the stress away after a long day. It's everything a park should be: serene, peaceful, and beautiful.

Yelp
I wandered into the park after eating way too much at Melt and I'm so glad I did! The park is lush and nearly drowns out the busy Avondale area noise. The lake is a very relaxing place to camp out for a while and watch the ducks going about their business. There's also an amphitheater and a pretty nice playground. I made excellent use of the playground by reliving my childhood antics and occupying the swings for hours. I happy accepted the side eyes from parents and the lone child who blatantly said I was too old to be playing! Lol

Yelp
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL park. Great place to walk, bring your pets, or play with the kids.

Yelp
Fantastically renovated urban space in a formerly undesirable neighborhood. That is Avondale Park in a nutshell. But let's crack that nut! A gorgeous wrought iron sign beckons you to come explore the hilly landscape that waits inside. Then, a lake comes into view, reflecting the trees, clouds, setting sun and rising moon, making for some excellent photo opportunities. All of the standard park features are there: benches, picnic tables, large grassy expanses, trees, clean air. But while this park might be tiny compared to Kensington Gardens or Central Park in NYC, it becomes mighty when all of its extras come into view. An outdoor, stone amphitheater provides an excellent setting for small concerts, choral performances, plays, and entertainment during charity events. During the recent Magic City AIDS Walk benefiting Birmingham AIDS Outreach, which was held at Avondale Park, several varieties of musical acts performed to the delight of the thousands of attendees and dozens of vendors that lined the road winding behind the stadium-style seating. The multitude of paved, stone and gravel pathways allowed hardcore event walkers and casual supporters alike to move throughout the venue with ease. During the release of 100s of red balloons in front of the lake during sunset to honor those who battle or were lost to AIDS was beyond breathtaking - the sun, clouds and balloons reflecting on the water was picture perfect. For those seeking physical fitness, the changes in elevation, stone steps in the amphitheater, and expansive green areas (perfect for yoga) create an outdoor gym from heaven. There is a lodge for indoor portions of events, bathrooms, and even some shaded areas for sunny day picnics. All in all, this is an excellently renovated park, next to a library (thank goodness we still have those!!!), in a quickly re-gentrifying area of Birmingham. It thrills me to see this park as a central feature of so many fantastic charity events and to have a green space near all of the fantastic bars, shops and galleries that are filling up 41st St South. Viva la Avondale! ps- minus 1 star for the sometimes quite sketchy folks who hang out in the park, the real potential of having your car broken into and/or being mugged, and the lack of non-parallel parking in the area (that one is personal for me... I'm terrible at parallel parking!!!)

Yelp
Honestly, I've never visited this park on the weekend. To my surprise (and I'm not sure why I never noticed it), Saturday mornings are quite busy with youth sports. Additionally, the ducks come out in droves and property is very well kept. It appears that the Avondale community is showing great pride in their community, and the park in my opinion is truly a reflection of the people living there. Really enjoyed my time there.

Yelp
This is probably one of the more underrated parks in Birmingham. I get the impression it once had a lot of grandeur but has lost its status overtime as the city grew around it and other projects such as railroad park took prominence. The park is located opposite 41st street in Avondale. It has a few baseball/softball fields down one end and green space at the other. It's center piece and statement maker is the lake in the middle of the park with a nice walking trail surrounding and park benches for watching the world go by. There is also an amphitheater towards the back of the park where events are sometime held. I have also seen mountain bike riders around the park so there must be some trails around. Take some time out of your day and experience the park and reminisce on what it would have been like to visit miss fancy the elephant back in the day.

Yelp
This is one favorite park to go to at night. I really love the lake and duck in the park. The most attractive part on the park is the outside theater and nice library beside it.

Yelp
This is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon walking around the lake or just laying and relaxing in the sun. Love that it is dog friendly too. Afterwards, we love to walk over to Parkside or one of the many other Avondale bars to enjoy a drink.

Yelp
So happy this park has been redone. Great to just walk around the water or lay in the grass on a beautiful day. It's also dog friendly. Conveniently located to Avondale brewery and other bars and restaurants.

Yelp
I'd probably give about 3.5 stars for Avondale Park. It's not necessarily in the greatest part of town, but it is certainly coming around and improving day-by-day. There are a lot of beautiful things about the park that people have been doing over the past couple years, and will do in the future. It's getting there, and is a very enjoyable place to visit during the day. It's near a lot of new, local businesses that people love hitting up nowadays, too. I really like the amphitheater, the pond, and the pavilions.

Yelp
Sad to see that an alleged drunk driver knocked down the Miss Fancy statue! Avondale Park is beautiful since it has been remodeled but still has some sketchy elements and we sometimes receive neighborhood emails about people being accosted there. This is too bad as the place is really nice and could be wonderful for the free jazz and movie events there. I also saw a recent petition about a dog park where which would be great for our two lab mixes. The park is plenty big enough for one!

Yelp
Saturday, 6pm. Ducks waddling about, children on swings and in strollers, adults arm-in-arm. Park wonderfully restored, aquatic grasses and a fountain inside a lovely large pond. Plenty of parking. Avondale Library next door, bars and restaurants half a block away. Amazing sound at the Amphitheater for the free jazz concert.
