I'm the hetero part of the "Heterofriendly" equation, and I felt completely comfortable and welcome (more than welcome) at Axel. I was the only female guest I saw during my 4 day stay there, however.
I thought the prices were more than reasonable and actually - fairly cheap given the overall quality and amenities.
I felt slightly predatorial in the sauna/spa on the top floor - the gym equipment faces the wet area, and I was the fully clothed hetero chick leering at all the naked men. My ear-to-ear smiles were just from an endorphin high, I promise. I am pleased to report that all smiles were reciprocated and returned. Or maybe it was because they were looking at the KaDaWe sign behind my head. Either way, despite the confrontational layout, there is an elliptical machine, a stationary bike, and free weights. Sauna and hot tub are good sized and co-ed.
As other reviews have stated, the hallways are pitch black except for mirrored interludes/corners which adds to the mysterious sexy vibe. Upon arriving, I was so delighted to see what I thought was another female walking towards me, except it was my own reflection in the pitch black hallway. #narcissism. Don't worry, I didn't give myself a brain concussion by running into the wall mesmerized at my own image.
Bed and in-room lighting super sexy and comfortable. I had a room with a transparent wall, large soaking bathtub and blacklighting with red undertones - unbelievably flattering for the obligatory belfie one must take while at Axel - regardless of sexual orientation.
Location is great - easy access to Charlottenburg. As other reviews stated, very different from the Barcelona hotel where I've also stayed. But, you're in Berlin. Things are inherently grittier and grimier. I loved it.
