10 Best Coffee Shops in Melbourne | Condé Nast Traveler

"Three-time national title–winning barista Dave Makin is part of the team behind Axil, which has two other cafes in addition to this flagship cafe and roastery in Hawthorn. Most of the beans are sourced directly from growers to help maintain ethical standards, and the house blend changes seasonally to reflect global conditions and to complement the food menu. It can be hard to hear in the main room, a converted warehouse space, so don't be afraid to gesticulate wildly when ordering—the waiters here are used to it." - Dan F. Stapleton

Axil coffee roasters Hawthorn Axil coffee roasters has turned 15 years old this year, which I feel like is fitting and finally time for a review. I have frequented their beans for use at home but never actually visited! They have many locations across Melbourne. The one I’m visiting today in Hawthorn has a very large shop front/ dining area, with outside and inside seating too. The seat choices are multitudinous with bench seats if your prefer your butt being cushioned, tables for groups or pretty high stool seating too. The decor is I would say “it’s own”. It feels snug but modern. There’s a large emphasis on hexagonal shapes and wood with walls that have a nice gradient and lighting which is perfectly soft and warming (especially at 7am in winter). Open air design (common now) which makes the place feel big and not stuffy. Starting to get busy just before 8am as you can tell it’s a popular spot for morning coffee / food for office workers. The service I would say is prompt and pretty immediate. It’s a ship that’s tightly run and you can tell that the moment you walk in. Workers are friendly and are on a mission to get you your coffee asap! From walking in, getting a seat to placing an order and then receiving my coffee was all in under 3 minutes which was almost incredible? Crazy fast. But fast doesn’t always mean good, But this time it did. I ordered my usual, a double shot mocha which if the coffee is burnt you can taste it, or if it’s over extracted the coffee becomes thin and loses its glisten. But the coffee came out in a fantastically warm cup, was smooth and most importantly tasty with silky froth on-top. (I even forgot to take a photo before my first sip!). When I got to the bottom of the cup I did get some “grainyness” from the powder in the mocha but that’s expected when you aren’t using real chocolate in it. One thing that’s worth noting is that the tables (atleast the 2 seater ones) are the most sturdy cafe table I have ever leaned on. You would have no trouble bringing a laptop in and typing away and don’t have to worry at all about the wiggle of the screen as you type your very important emails! In the department of actually purchasing their beans, there is I believe a complete range of their products. From beans, pre ground for drip, espresso, instant coffee, pods and even ready to brew coffee bags. If you are after a reliable and consistent coffee with no fuss, Axil coffee roasters is a great option out of the many out there.

We recently returned to one of our former favourite breakfast spots, and while the food is still decent, there were a few things that left us questioning if it’s still worth the visit. We ordered the Zucchini, Corn & Halloumi Fritters and the scrambled eggs with relish. The dishes were tasty, but nothing that stood out as exceptional. It’s been a while since we’ve been here, and although the menu hasn’t changed much over the years, the pricing has definitely increased. After Covid, it seems prices have crept up, with most meals now averaging close to $30 (a smash avocado with poached egg comes in around $28). For what you get, it’s hard to justify the cost — particularly when the serving sizes aren’t quite as generous as they once were. With so many new cafes in the area offering similar dishes at a more competitive price point, this is no longer our go-to spot for brunch with friends and family. While we still enjoy the food, there are other places that offer better value for money these days.

I was a customer since long time ago. Used to be good. Used to be One of our favourite spots. We went as a group of 5 after gym. Every single item had problems. Cold coffee even though I asked for extra hot ! Pastry was super cold from inside for our both orders. We just had to eat since we were hungry. Wish improvement since local. Definitely poor management.

Been before and probably won’t go again for food. Coffee is great, however waited a while for food to come out only for it to be very misrepresented from the menu. Ordered the katsu Benedict which just doesn’t work. Picture a square peg in a round hole. The thick cut bacon was the width of my plate, balanced on an equally thick cut, but cube piece of bread. The bacon itself was so disappointing. Maybe I didn’t understand “katsu” means cutlet, and in particular a crumbed and deep fried version. Bacon to me should be caramelised with crispy ends and giving an Unami hit. By crumbing and deep frying an already very fatty piece of meat, meant it was more a stewed texture inside. Very unappetising. There were a couple matchsticks of apple in the pile of coriander, and overall was terribly dissapointed in this not cheap breakfast item. I’d suggest swapping the bacon for a crumbed chicken, call it “the chicken and the egg” Benedict, and add the word “crumbed” to the menu description so people who do not know Japanese understand it’s a fried element.

We literally had a perfect breakfast here. So much so that we congratulated ourselves on the way out about what a great choice we made. Smug smug smug!! service was awesome and food was just perfect, temperature, amount, taste and appearance!

We used to love Axil Café for its great service and coffee, but today was really disappointing. Out of the 10 items we ordered, about 8 had issues — cold coffee, poor food, and more. We didn’t raise each problem during the meal because we were hungry and didn’t want to call staff over 8 times. Instead, we gave feedback at the end, hoping it would help improve things. The only response was, “Please let us know during service so we can fix it.” When I explained why we hadn’t, they just said, “All good, all good.” No apology, no real acknowledgment. Really poor customer service.

A bit disappointed that they did not have any sweet options like pancakes or waffles or cakes. The only thing on the menu that was sweet (hot milk cakes) had run out by the time we went. Lovely cup of coffee, but wish it was a bit warmer.

We where looking for a place to have a breakfast today and this was the only place open in the area. We were not disappointed. The service was quick and the place was full but plenty of sitting still available. We quickly ordered and got exactly want we ordered quickly. The facilities are clean. The staff is nice. The prices are reasonable by today’s standard. Overall, highly recommend for a breakfast or just a coffee and dessert.
