Azerai La Residence, Hue

"Built on the banks of the Perfume River just upstream from Hue’s famous citadel, this 122-room hotel takes its identity from the former French colonial governor’s mansion at its core. The same nautical moderne architecture that makes the villa so charming is reprised in the two modern wings, which were added during a thorough yet sensitive renovation of the original building so that the place is pure Indochine. The original villa includes a reception area decorated with framed photos of Old Hue and an adjacent bar with deep club chairs—and nine dreamy rooms, plus a presidential suite. These have a colonial feel, with ceiling fans, mosquito netting (for atmosphere more than necessity), and dark-stained wood furnishings. An additional 112 rooms and suites are housed in wings that frame a large pool overlooking the river. Reopened February 2019. Second Adrian Zecha property in Vietnam."

"Set along the evocatively named Perfume River, La Résidence is a good place to soak upHué’s conflux of Vietnamese history, French-colonial charm, and postwar life. The former home of the French-colonial governor, the elegant Art Deco villa and gardens were restored and relaunched as a hotel in 2005. Many of the 122 rooms and suites offer views of the river or the tops of the Imperial Citadel (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), while all feature vintage-inspired furnishings, local fabrics, and the required modern conveniences. The1920s style also helps set the scene at the seven-room spa—which has garnered praise for locally inspired treatments that include Vietnamese cupping therapy and baths infused with rice wine and ginger—and at Le Gouverneur Bar, where you can settle into cushy armchairs or on the terrace, overlooking the gardens, to enjoy a drink or Cuban cigar. Come mealtime, savor French-Vietnamese and Continental fine dining at Le Parfum restaurant, or book one of the hotel’s fun foodie experiences, including cyclo market tours, cooking classes, dinner cruises, poolside barbecues, and private picnics on Thien An Hill."

We stayed at the Azerai La Residence Hue for 4 nights. From the moment we walked in to this historic and well cared for hotel we felt relaxed, with a warm greeting from their lovely staff and a gorgeous room overlooking the perfume river. You can tell all the people at the Azerai love the hotel and Hue. From reception to the restaurant to the spa. Other stand outs include the guest relation manager Nguyet, Y in the Spa, and Khoa who drove for both our transfer to Da Nang as well as our tours of Hue. Definitely get a tour of the Imperial City, Mausoleums and Pagodas of Hue. We did 2 tours organised by the hotel, with Khoa as driver and Van as our guide, and these were absolute highlights of our trip. Van was an amazing guide and she is a wonderful ambassador for the city, providing informative and insightful background to some of the city history and monuments. ||Only comment for improvement would be that the swimming pool was very deep and consequently only the shallow end was really usable, but we enjoyed it nevertheless each day. Should change be considered to the pool area in the future the hotel should consider making the pool shallower in depth, and adding some trees nearby that could provide some shade over the pool itself during the hot days. But only very minor points as this is a fabulous hotel. Thank you to the Azerai for a wonderful stay in Hue.

I had a truly memorable stay at Azerai Hue. The hotel went above and beyond to make my birthday special with a thoughtful touch—beautiful flowers and little cake in the room, which I deeply appreciated. The breakfast was delightful, and I especially enjoyed the hotel's tranquil and elegant atmosphere. I also recommend the airport transfer arranged from Danang—it was smooth and comfortable, with refreshing wet towels and bottled water thoughtfully prepared for the journey. My only regret is not being able to stay longer.

We loved our stay at the Azerai. We were grateful to be able to swim at the end of hot day of sightseeing. The hotel is full of old world charm and the rooms are very comfortable. But it’s the service that really makes the place. Vy at the front desk gave us many restaurant recommendations and all of them were wonderful. Everyone was so friendly and helpful which added to the experience. Thank you for a wonderful holiday!

We stayed four nights here in a River King Deluxe Room. |Location is excellent. It takes only 25mins to walk or 7 mins by taxi to the Citadel. The hotel style is best described as ‘colonial’. |All the staff we met were delightful, spoke very good English and were pleasant and eager to help. Ms Thi had been exceptionally helpful with our Reservation process. Our room was an unusual design, with a separate sitting area, and a large balcony. Everything was spotlessly clean, and the room well equipped, with the exception of an iron and ironing board, which are readily available on request. We were warned on check in about construction on the adjacent river bank and possible noise issues, but what little noise we experienced was not obtrusive, and did not affect our sleep or impact our enjoyment of the hotel. We used the hotel Limo service to drive to Da Nang Airport at the end of our stay. The drive took just over 2 hours and the driver, Mr Khoa, was excellent, very safe, and gave us no uncomfortable moments, which in the Vietnamese traffic is no mean feat!| We would happily return to the Azerai Hué and would highly recommend it.

Probably the best hotel/resort in Hue. Colonial history and architecture sets the tone for a true 5-star experience, and the staff know exactly how to uphold that service. Food was mostly just okay, but extremely well-presented. However my Beef Tournedos was one of the best steaks I've eaten! The Perfume River Suite had a massive two-corner terrace with sunset and river views that made our stay truly special.||Location: Directly on the brand new (and expanding) river promenade for an evening stroll. Only a few other restaurants nearby however.||Disliked · Our first room Deluxe King with River View felt small and had only one air con vent for two rooms - causing one room to be freezing while the other was warm. We paid to move to a larger room - which we enjoyed immensely!

A beautiful colonial style hotel on the banks of the Perfume River. Originally, the French Governor's House, two wings have been added sympathically and in keeping with the original building. ||After booking through the hotel's website, I was sent confirmation by the hotel's guest relations manager and also details of services provided by the hotel. I booked a car transfer from Da Nang airport and two private tours: half day Highlights of Hue with Perfume River Cruise and day tour to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The trip was also partly to celebrate my travelling partner's birthday. After enquiring if there was any special meal I could arrange, I was sent the hotel's Colonial Life Book which contains many special dining options; I chose the Colonial Dinner.||Airport Transfer: problem free in one of the hotel's vehicles (2 hour journey from airport to Hue).||Highlights of Hue Tour: an excellent, informative and unhurried tour with a guide who spoke excellent English. A very good introduction to Hue. The boat departure point is adjacent to the hotel and only a few minutes walk.||DMZ Tour: a long day but highly recommended. Transport (as with Hue Tour and airport transfer) was in a hotel vehicle with the hotel driver whose driving was careful and safe. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and engaging. Again, totally unhurried, the trip was taken at our pace. The highlight was the final stop at the Vinh Moc Tunnels, similtaneously a sobering and uplifting experience. The guide asked if we would like to explore some tunnels that were not open to the public. We agreed straightaway and spent several minutes navigating unlit tunnels with only our phone lights to guide us!||Colonial Dinner: on arrival, one of the staff went through the menu with us because there were some small changes due to minor dietary requirements. The actual dinner for 2 took place by the pool. It was superb. The service was faultless and the food was delicious. The hotel turned a special evening into a very, very special and unforgettable one.||My recommendation would be to book your trips through the hotel for guaranteed safe transport and excellent guides.||General comments: we stayed for 5 nights in a Deluxe River King which was spacious and very comfortable. The rooms are in keeping with the style of the hotel and to some guests that may mean "dated" but for us were just right. All the staff, without exception, were helpful and smiling (we were even advised to make sure we wore a hat and took suncream on our trips!). Breakfast was buffet style with a wide choice and, again, excellent service. We also ate in the restaurant where again food and service were superb. The pool area is large with a pool bar and plenty of sun loungers. The gardens are beautifully kept and the hotel has its own herb and vegetable plot. The bar is very pleasant with almost a Hercule Poirot feel to it.||It is only a 20-25 minute stroll to the Citadel across the river and about 30 mins to the Dong Ba Market. We also walked along the promenade in the evening and it was interesting to see all the locals playing badminton, basketball or takyan.||We also discovered the Le Cercle Sportif restaurant and rooftop bar situated just along the promenade. We made a reservation through the website. On arrival, we were surprised to find one or two hotel staff there. It is owned by the same group as the hotel and some staff rotate between the restaurant and the hotel. The restaurant is well worth a visit and I will be completing a separate review of it.||Although all the staff in the hotel were brilliant, a special thank you to Nguyet who dealt with all my enquiries before, and during, the stay. Also, when she knew we were travelling to Hoi An after our stay in Hue, she researched some things for us to do. One recommendation was the Teh Dar Show. Nguyet booked our seats and sent us our tickets (as it happened, the best seats in the house!). I cannot thank her enough for making our holiday throughly enjoyable and memorable.||To sum up, the stay here was almost as if we had been transported back in time to the days of an unhurried, relaxing holiday in a charming residence with personal, faultless service.

We had an awesome time at the Azerai La Residence in Hue! The hotel is located perfectly on the side of the Perfume river, with just a few minutes walk to the city center and also the train station. The hotel facilities and pool area are beautiful, but what made the trip really special is the amazing staff that made sure we always felt welcome, from check-in to breakfast, pool, bar and housekeeping, everyone was super welcoming, caring and attentive. We took the evening train to Hanoi and we could spend the full day relaxing at the pool, which was very nice. We fully recommend the hotel to anyone looking to spend a few days in Hue!

What an amazing entrance, feels like we stumbled into a Poirot novel, just lovely. Rooms are clean bit a little dated and only a curtain for the bathroom door. Great hotel, lovely pool area, great breakfast and service from Reception. Nia welcomed us so well but star of the show is Oahn, the bar tender. What a lovely man, made beautiful cocktails and when we were sitting outside, came to spray us with mosquito lotion, just in case! We didnt get bitten, thank you to Oahn, you are a wonderful man.
