We stayed in one of the cave rooms here for 2 nights -what an experience !!! Firstly we must comment on our very welcoming and friendly hosts , Enzo and his wife Mimi, the most delightful couple. Nothing was too much trouble , Enzo had a mine of interesting local information and history and is the ideal person to go to for local restaurants and places of interest. Mimi produces the most amazing home made breakfasts beautifully presented served with delicious coffee. The cakes were so light and tasty, something we looked forward to both days . Maria kept our room clean and tidy and was a real character to meet. Matera is a truly unique City and Al Convento is right in the heart of the old town Sassi .

Where to start? Perfect hospitality- Enzo and his lovely wife Mima make you feel so welcome and supported in a foreign city. They are thoughtful, attentive and funny. They organised restaurant bookings, advice on where to walk, how to transit and always with a smile. The location is great great - the B and B is in the middle of the Sassi in a quiet spot. A sensational breakfast- Mima cooks everything- stunning cakes ( I will be dieting when I get home), fruit and an AMAZING cheese course everyday. History- Enzo is a 3rd generation Materan and tour guide- book him in advance so you don’t miss out.

This is the true Matera - our bedroom in a cave......We arrived in Matera and parked in the big car park in the new town and took the shuttle bus down to the old town to be met by Enzo, our host of our B&B Al Convento. This place is amazing, our room is in a cave, very humid and so there are 2 dehumidifiers going all the time. This is part of the cave atmosphere. The amazing breakfast, served outside, was huge, we could not eat it all. Fruit, including Fico D'india - the fruit from the cactus plant - very tasty, bread, a huge brioche which we didn't even get to taste; cheese, honey, ricotta, buratto cheese, prosciutto and so it went on. We felt a bit embarrassed that we left so much. And this was served every morning. Enzo and his wife were so helpful with organising a tour of the town, and suggestions of where to go to eat etc. This place is perfection and we would love to go back again some day. If you want to live and feel Matera, this is where to come.

Enzo and Mima run a wonderful bed and breakfast in a great location - the Sassi San Pietro. It’s right in the heart of Matera and a minute walk from the Piazza San Pietro. ||Our room was the Conchigli room, named after fossil shells found in the walls. The room was an original cave and very comfortable. Enzo ensures you have everything you need and provides information to help you with your stay. He willingly arranged a taxi pick up and return for us. ||Mima bakes some of the breakfast items which are extremely delicious and very hard to resist if you’re watching your waistline! Every morning there are different treats to try and so much food you couldn’t possibly eat everything they put out. Breakfast consists of fruit, pastries, cheeses and meats, nuts, focaccia, cakes, proper freshly squeezed juices, coffee/tea and all unbelievably tasty. ||||A word of warning when staying in Matera. Plan your stay! Tours and restaurants can be busy and fully booked. The bus we needed from Bari airport was run by a private company - Micollis and was a small minibus. After waiting 2hrs for it, we hadn’t booked in advance so couldn’t get 2 seats on it. We had to wait for the next bus over an hour later. ||We found several instances in Italy where booking in advance for services was essential ||||Tours to the other side of the Sassi are expensive and so are taxis to get around. Do your homework on what you want to see - it will be worth it

Fantastic base for any visit to Matera. Enzo and his wife are excellent hosts providing hospitality and good food to start each day.||Our room is unique - a cave - but the bed and the facilities within are top class.||Enzo knows all the right people so xan help set you up for the day. Every day.

Definitely one of the best hotel experience of my life! Enzo and his wife are super friendly and will tell you everything about Matera! The rooms are just the experience you want to have in Matera. We were super lucky and due to overbooking we have been given the suit! It was just a dream!!
