A guide to Singapore's coolest neighbourhoods - SilverKris

"A Peranakan-focused restaurant housed in a heritage building (the former Joo Chiat Police Station) where the chef reinterprets Straits Chinese favourites; standout dishes include an Itek Tim “Consommé” (salted duck soup) and an Ayam Buah Keluak burger, offering bold, piquant flavours in a stylish setting." - SilverKris

Casual and relaxing ambience. Music was not overpowering which made conversation easy. Beef Rendang was absolutely delicious with melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. Pineapple Curry Prawns had a medley of vegetables and tiger prawns in light tangy curry. Lava cake was average but a nice way to end the meal. Paired well with the Latte :) Our visit was made all the more enjoyable by the warm and friendly Marivel, who attended us with care and was quick to respond to our requests.

Ambience is nice. Service not too bad. Food I wouldn’t say it’s authentic Peranakan but more fusion like. Still the beef rendang was cooked well, meat was tender but could be more flavourful. Ayam Buah Keluah as you can see from the photo, the chicken wasn’t exactly infused with the buah keluah. Not too bad still. My fav is the burnt Brussels sprout. Abit pricey I would say.

Been a few years since I last visited this place. The food is still as good as before. The Beef Rendang is awesome and the Assam fish too was nice. Char Kway Teow was probably my least fav but still decent. The service was excellent, very welcoming and friendly staff.

Ambience of the restaurant was pleasant. Service was amazing, the waitress, Marivel, was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Pineapple prawn curry was fresh and rich in flavour. Portion perfect for 2. Beef Rendang was served with blue pea rice and tangy sambal sauce. The beef was perfect, soft and rich beef taste.

Initially saw someone recommending as a must try Peranakan food place in Singapore. But turns out to be more Fusion Peranakan i would say, not the authentic authentic kind. But food was pretty decent for us still and since their options were a mixture of asian, western and Peranakan cuisines, we went ahead to tried what they recommend. Wanted to try their Ayam Buah Keluak but service crew suggested is not that authentic and recommend us to try the Asam fish head which turns out great 👍🏻 other of the dishes was pretty decent for us as well ! Not the best but still good. Cheers !

Had a wonderful breakfast here. Everything you could possibly want. The buffet was brilliant. Everything was well set out and looked delicious. Loved the bottles of juice and juice maker. The hot choices were plentiful. The staff were lovely, attentive and professional and everyone was smiling! Totally recommend. Well worth the money.

I had a very disappointing experience at Baba Chews. Customer service was practically non-existent — staff seemed inattentive and disinterested, making the whole dining experience unpleasant from the start. Cleanliness was passable (3/5), but definitely not spotless. Presentation of the food was poor (1/5) — the dishes looked rushed and unappealing. Unfortunately, the taste didn’t make up for it either (2/5); flavours were underwhelming and lacked depth. The steak was served raw, and the risotto was uncooked and grainy — both completely inedible. For the prices charged, I expected much better. I won’t be returning.

Dine in for dinner with family with young kids. They have kids meal which is good if you’re visiting with young kids. The portion was big for kids that comes with drinks and ice cream. My boys enjoyed their fish and chips meal and truffle fries. We ordered beef rendang which is good but best if served with Indonesian sambal. You’ll get 50% off if you’re staying in Hotel Indigo.

Yelp
Update on Jan 5 25 - we had a much better and attentive experience with breakfast. Management came to us and genuinely wanted to learn about our dinner experience, and how to improve. We appreciated this gesture and decided to up our review as they really did a much better job at breakfast. The staff at breakfast was amazing and cared about giving a great experience. We had a reservation at 7pm Jan 4 2025and our dinner ended after a very long 2.5 hours. Although the food and portions were good, the service was unfortunately abysmal. After ordering, the service became very slow with our water bottles were empty for 20 mins plus. I eventually had to get up myself to approach the bar table to ask for water. This is all with the restaurant not being full and a majority of tables were empty. We waited 20+ mins for them to clear our entree plates, after waving someone down. The worst part was dessert - my husband's dessert was first given to the wrong table and finally when it did come, it was different from what was advertised on the menu (AND different from another person of our party who ordered the same item). The mistake and inconsistency of the item made us feel like the restaurant didn't care about customer satisfaction nor the quality of their dishes. The wait staff apologized for the delays and mistakes, but we don't recommend the restaurant. It's one of those situations where no matter how good the food, our experience told us it wasn't worth it.

Yelp
We were initially looking forward to having a great meal here. Sadly, we were quite disappointed. If you're going to serve a "Signature dish" like Beef Rendang, it should be slow-cooked/ braised for several hours- this one was not! It was tough & chewy- the fat had not had enough time to render & get soft. If you cook the meat until soft & season it properly, Beef Rendang is a delicious dish, one that I would order again & again. We found the service slow on a recent Sunday, rainy night & everything we tried was quite under-seasoned. Your menu indicated that "grilled asparagus" was part of your signature salad- it was not. The asparagus was blanched/steamed & cut nicely, but had little taste. Same with your crab cakes & fry bread- they all looked nice, but didn't deliver on taste.

Yelp
We were in Singapore and found this gem in our hotel. We enjoyed dinner one evening and high tea one afternoon. We found it to be welcoming and quaint with great service. The menu had a lot of variety that included Asian, Indian, and Western options. The high tea was interesting in that it started off with a mocktail. The drink was a beautiful lavender color, refreshing coconut taste. The first course of finger sandwiches featured smoked salmon, crab salad with caviar, and mushroom toast. I did not care for the mushroom, and I don't eat fish... but the crab was delicious and fresh. The tea featured some desserts that I was unfamiliar with, like a matcha custard and coconut shot. It had traditional scones with fruit compote and whipped cream. For dinner, I was craving a burger, and they did not disappoint. The burger was cooked perfectly at medium and was juicy. It did NOT require a lot of condiments. The fries were shoestring, but they were cold. The seafood pasta was packed full of seafood such as mussels, shrimp, scallops, and calamari.

Yelp
Tried breakfast and dinner. Both times got food that was cold. Tough steak, flavorless eggs. Pretty spot but wouldn't go there with so many choices near by.

Yelp
Portions were ridiculously small for the price paid. I could get better food from a hawker center. I'm glad Singapore isn't a tipping country because I would have given no tip.

Yelp
As a guest of Hotel Indigo, we enjoyed their breakfast buffet and room service. The breakfast was included with our room rate so we took advantage and the staff was helpful to point out the vegan options and made us a veggie currie and roti to go with the buffet, we were full and taken care of. The fruit was a bit bland and the cappuccino was a bit bitter, but overall good variety for breakfast and we were full for hours. The room service came in clutch after being exhausted after a long day of walking and shopping. We ordered the Assam Curry Seabass, the Chap Chae, Sauteed veggies, and jasmine rice - we didn't venture into the fusion dishes and kept it simple. Everything was flavorful, especially the Sea Bass, and it arrived quickly and piping hot, totally satisfying!

Yelp
Our first taste of food in Singapore just happened to be downstairs from our hotel room. Baba Chews is the on-site restaurant for the Hotel Indigo. We were given two free drinks as part of our check-in welcome as platinum elite members with IHG, so we decided to redeem our drinks and have dinner at Baba Chews on our first night in Singapore. My husband had a Stella beer and I ordered the wine. The food is Peranakan fusion. We ordered the Beef Rendang to share. It came with rice and some veggies too. If you've never tried beef rendang, it's a Malaysian curry using coconut milk and spices like star anise and kaffir lime leaves. The beef was tender and the curry sauce was delectable. Service was excellent. As IHG members, we also received a discount on our food bill at Baba Chews, which was a nice touch. The food pricing is a little more expensive than the hole-in-the-wall places nearby so keep that in mind when choosing to dine here.

Yelp
So bad. When you are located in the food haven of Katong, I really can't figure out why this place would bother serving food that is just utterly bad. When the pricing is $15 for a plate of fried kway teow or nonya fried rice, there better be a very good reason why you're charging this premium compared to all the amazing food outlets that are just a couple of steps from your door. We tried the chilli crab cake - not good and the fried mantou is so fried and tiny that it's more like a tiny biscuit. I am a huge fan of Ayam bua keluak (candle nut chicken) but their Ayam bua keluak burger while sounding promising on the menu, is a dreadful mess. Don't bother with the Penang Hokkien Mee or the nonya fried rice either. Actually, don't bother coming at all.

Yelp
Great variety of Peranakan food, whipped up using the freshest of ingredients. Enjoyed the Chap Chye, Ayam buah keluak, sambal stingray and laksa. Simply couldn't keep my hands off the sambal belachan. Aside from the ambience and furniture, the service was similarly top notch.

Yelp
Just to be clear we are food purists who sneer at anything fusion. Having said that: Holy Cowabunga!!!! This place is freaking so good you will want to slap your mama and papa. Started out the otah appetizer, not a clue as to what the black buns were but they were delicious. Ready to just have just have twenty of these little bundles. Hubby has Peranakan Pulled Pork burger. The bun was pillowy and as someone who eats pulled pork from the American south, I would happily put this in front of any of my southern friends with the perfect assurance they will love it. For me I had the crawfish Kuay Tiao (wise rice noodle) with a side of achar. The dish was a perfect amalgamation of street style char kuay tiao with a luxurious flair with the crawfish addition. Finally dessert. Oh heaven wept. Pandas cake so soft hubs was afraid it may collapse. My Ondeh with durian was so soft and sublime. Warm pandan crepe filled with durian, top with cool ice cream. Heaven really wept!!!! Service was top notch too. So run don't walk to this gem!!!!

Yelp
Decent food. I ordered the pork rice bowl. Filling, but with a fishy aftertaste. Atmosphere was very pleasant with polite staff. A bit pricy, but a good brunch destination. However, the restaurant is only a stones throw away from seemingly similar, but better options.

Yelp
Very good breakfast selection and quality. Not a fan of the hollandaise sauce though. Fresh juice, fruit and eggs are very tasty. Always a couple interesting options on the specials board as well. Attached to the Hotel Indigo which is really nice.

Yelp
The food was delicious, service attentive, and atmosphere beautiful. My family of 4 ate outside, and there was a lovely water fountain that my kids enjoyed while waiting for our meal. I love how early they're open for breakfast, great for tourists. We got eggs benedict, belgian waffles, kaya toast with dimsum, and a big kids' breakfast. The western fare was definitely better than the Asian stuff. (Dim sum was dry and lacked flavor, but everything else was awesome!) All that, plus pulled coffee and tea, made for a pretty pricey breakfast ($75!), so this could not possibly be a regular habit for us. But it was a lovely treat!

Yelp
Not sure why the reviews are low. This is for breakfast only. The food is good, not that fast, but not ridiculously slow either. It gets really busy in there, and the staff could be more attentive. For example, I had to ask 4 different people for coffee, and got coffee after 20 minutes. That's pretty ridiculous. Other than that, the menu is pretty extensive and the food tastes good.
