18 Weird, Wondrous Places for Wine-Lovers Around the Globe

"In Florence’s Santo Spirito neighborhood, you can grab a glass of wine in the traditional Florentine way. A new restaurant, Babae, has reopened one of Florence’s once-ubiquitous wine windows. While most buchette del vino have long been sealed up, buying wine through a window was once a regular part of  local life.  In 1559, Cosimo de’ Medici decreed that noble families could sell the wine from their vineyards directly out of their palaces.  Anyone on the street could knock on the windows built into the façades of the Renaissance palaces to indicate they wanted to purchase wine. A servant would take the customer’s empty bottle and their payment, refill the bottle down in the cellar, and hand it back out to the street.  But as the centuries progressed, the noble palaces were sold and turned into hotels or apartments. By the 20th century, grabbing a bottle of wine through a little window on the street was only a memory.   But Babae has brought back the tradition by opening their wine window to the public. From seven to eight each evening, Babae hosts their “L’ora della Buchetta,” where they serve glasses of their wine by handing it out to the street.  Even outside the “hour of the wine window,” you can pass by and peek through past the little wooden door at a tradition that almost was stuccoed-over in time." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Accompanied by professor and guide Elisabetta Digiugno, Stanley goes on a (brief) old-school bar crawl, starting with this bistro that offers wine through its Renaissance-era "wine window." The tiny openings, called "buchette del vino," "don't exist anywhere outside of Tuscany -- another example of Renaissance genius," Tucci explained.

Wow! This place serves the most amazing breakfast! Super fresh, tasty and huge! It was delicious. Paired with great coffee and tea, it really made for the perfect start to the day. Service was great, prices were great, so was the comfortable and cosy interior. There was also seating outside. Highly recommend!

Google
A wine window experience! Absolutely loved it! This was great, we had a glass of orange wine and a Aperol Spritz in really nice plastic glasses and enjoyed the ambience of the experience. The queue system wasn't very clear to me, so some path markings might help (it was busy and July) but also it didn't take more than 10mins to queue and get the drinks. Wine windows have made a comeback post COVID on Florence and I am absolutely here for it. The experience is unique and with a lovely climate it's really nice to enjoy an alfresco glass with a unique experience. They have a very good system for returning plastic glasses or you can pay a deposit and keep it.

Our visit to Babae was a true encounter with Florentine history. Babae is the restaurant that got back the ancient tradition of "wine windows" during the Covid pandemic. I have learned about these historic wine windows, dating back to the 1600s bubonic plague era and we were eager to visit at least one during our trip to Florence. It was a unique experience. we stayed outside, rang the bell & through the tiny historic window received our drinks. We started off with a refreshing Aperol Spritz and moved to few local wines. This experience of standing on the street, drink in hand, surrounded by local life was unlike any typical bar visit. Our sole purpose of our visit was to grab the wines from the famous wine window. Grabbing wine from a window as people did 400 years ago was a delightful blend of history, local culture, and modern-day enjoyment. It's a memorable stop in our Florentine trip.

Went to their wine window and you could buy their plastic wine glass to bring home. Strolling through Florence with a glass of vino rosso is pretty great!

Google
Two words: Wine Window ! One of only a few places in Florence to still offer this unique piece of history experience. Our local tour guide recommended this place and it was fantastic. Firstly there is the wine window where you can order anything from the list including aperol spritz. Secondly, this is a really cool and trendy cafe/ bar/ restaurant. Beautiful decor inside and really great menu too, and it’s located in a quiet street on the “locals” side of the river and away from the throngs of tourists. Although we came just for the wine window where, we would absolutely return for the restaurant next time. A bit of a hidden gem. Highly recommended.

Nice restaurant. Pasta was amazing. Black bun with raw tuna was perfect. Tuna melted in mouth. Bartender Francis deserves a special thanks. A fun guy with classy mustache was a star for our toddler. He even gave plastic glass for baby to look cooler when drinking water😂 Also this restaurant has a wine window, though we had lunch inside🙂

Google
Highly recommended for the experience. Can buy the glass for 5 Euros or not and place in the basket after you are finished.

Perfect brunch on a Sunday morning. Exquisite fresh crusty bread, generous helping of meats and tasty accompaniments. Top notch Tiramisu to cap it all. Just a stroll away from the tourist traps around Ponte Vecchio. Highly recommend for brunch/lunchtime.

Yelp
This is a fun place! They have an outside wine window. It was soooooo cold... so we went inside to enjoy it... and we sat on a cute little coach. My daughter order a tea and a raw cheese cake that we shared. The cheese cake was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S!!! The place is cute and the staff is amicable.

Yelp
Charming little wine bar with a famous wine window out front. Fairly famous with fans of Stanley Tucci who came here for his CNN show. Nice glass of Prosecco for 6 euro. Nice staff. Nice atmosphere. Worth a stop for sure for the history of the wine window alone. Five stars

Yelp
Wow, just wow! So happy we came across this place for brunch today! Ended up coming a few times during trip to Florence. The Turkish Eggs were amazon! Tomatoes with Bread was warm and flavorful and the Avocado toast Yum! They also have a brunch menu where you select your main, and it comes with side salad and parfit and drinks! This cafe also has one of the notorious wine windows. So you could order and drink in the alleyway. Free Wifi and such creative food combinations. Would highly recommend coming here!

Yelp
I recommend stopping here when in Florence. Definitely a touristy thing to do but who cares. Babae has tables inside and a few outside to enjoy drinks. To the left of the restaurant is a buchette del vino or wine window. It's very simple. You order a glass of wine, and they put it in the window for you. Apparently the concept started in the 1600s with the Bubonic Plague. It was a safe way for shopkeepers to sell food and wine without having contact with other people. The wine was very good so it's not just a gimmick. Will definitely come back and try some food next time.

Yelp
If I were a rich man, Daidle deedle daidle Daidle daidle deedle daidle dumb All day long I'd biddy-biddy-bum If I were a wealthy man I wouldn't have to work hard, Daidle deedle daidle Daidle daidle deedle daidle dumb. Rich we felt following Stanley Tucci's steps, from sitting in their comfortable oasis drinking White Wine and eating Babae Balls of falafel like patties with delicious sauces, to walking up to their outdoor portal for red wine, was very enjoyable. A real Italian treat. I'd fill my yard with chicks and turkeys and geese And ducks for the town to see and hear, Squawking just as noisily as they can, And each loud "pa-pa-geeee! pa-pa-gaack! pa-pa-geeee! pa-pa-gaack!" Would land like a trumpet on the ear, As if to say, "Here lives a wealthy man." Oy!..:) Ciao mi Amicos, Avram Tucci Jr.

Yelp
Everyone crowds around in the street to drink wine from the wine window and completely misses the excellent food inside.

Yelp
Just a quick review on the bar portion/wine window . Loved this spot and it is just as fun as you might have seen on social media or online. The medieval wine window repurposed in modern times is a lovely experience. I enjoyed the orange wine, which was €8 a glass. It was so refreshing and a memorable taste. The staff is very kind and service is fast. Inside has a lot of tables, as well as outside. If you're only coming for drinks, you can go straight up to the bar inside, or experience the wine window, where you wait in line outside, order, then pay at the window. They accept card and Apple Pay.

Yelp
I had heard about the wine windows of Florence and came upon this one quite by accident. There was a long line, and we were on our way to dinner, so we didn't partake in the grape. Glad to have seen it. One of the little wonders of Florence. 58

Yelp
We went to their wine window, what a fun experience! Did not have food, just wine. You need to experience a wine window when in Florence.

Yelp
Went to the wine window for a very cool experience in Florence and i definitely would recommend it for everyone. I ordered the glass of Bianco which was a chardonnay blend and it was very good so is all the wine i've gotten in italy. There was a bit of a line but it went by pretty quickly and once we got up to the window it took a minute or 2 to get the glass of wine. After getting it you can sit outside or you can sit inside the restaurant until you finish your glass. The ambiance was so cool of the whole place because i've never seen anything like this back home. For sure will visit again!

Yelp
This place is amazing! We came here for the wine window and ended up having cocktails here for the evening! The atmosphere is very relaxed although we did not have a reservation we found comfortable seating and enjoyed drinks here. The Chianti house wine was particularly good. I would highly recommend coming here for the wine window experience and staying for the evening, salute!

Yelp
Food came at an ideal time. Everyone enjoyed what they got. Atmosphere was great and the temperature inside was ideal. Server was very kind:)

Yelp
Having visited during a food tour in October we went back for a midafternoon snack a few weeks ago. We were not disappointed at all. Recall this a place famous for its wine hole but the restaurant itself is worth a visit. We had a bottle of the merlot along with the beef tartare and their truffle eggs. Both were great snacks, filling with fresh ingredients and just what we needed. We will definitely be back

Yelp
I was walking by here on the way to get some ink and saw a short line for the wine window. It may be the basic bihh in me, but I simply couldn't pass up the experience of being handed an aperol spritz through a tiny little window. haha. If you don't think a wine window is cool, or at least see the appeal, then you're just a hater smh. This place is away from much of the tourist traffic, so felt a bit more authentic. I made some Australian & local Italian friends in line, and we ended up all drinking together and just talking about where we come from. Even though I'll likely never see them again and only remember one of their names, for those 20 minutes we are all fully present just talking about the different worlds we come from. These short interactions are one of the reasons I love to travel so much, you really get all different types of view points and perspective and get to take them with you moving forward. 7 or 8 euro depending on what drink you get is also amazing. I will 100% be back here before my trip is over!

Yelp
Cute little wine window! Good service and yummy wines. Long line but it went pretty fast.

Yelp
Fun experience when visiting Florence Getting in line on the street for getting a glass of wine from a tiny window is something unique, especially when we went through social distancing not too far ago. Italians intelligence let them implemented social distancing while maintained their drinking life.

Yelp
Incredibly refreshing menu after all the delicious (but repetitive) Tuscan cuisine! I had seared tuna with almond crust that was possibly one of the best things I ate in florence. Great ambiance and cocktails too. Not to be missed!

Yelp
I went to Babae just for the wine window! After seeing Babae featured on the Stanley Tucci show, I knew I just had to try it. The wine window concept is so much fun! You just reach your hand in to ring a bell, and a voice on the other side takes your order. The menu is simple, offering a couple of wine options and Prosecco. They pass your wine through the window and voila! You stand on the street to drink it. We have nothing like this where I live and the concept is just a lot of fun! I recommend Babae.

Yelp
I stumbled on this wine bar because they had a wine window. You don't actually order at the window lol. Go inside and order at the bar. They'll bring the drink out to you through the window if you ask. They're open late till 2 AM! Drinks are good. I got a glass of white wine for 5 euros. I love the decor inside. They link QR codes to the artists' social media accounts.

Yelp
Great service. Great Wine list and best of all the ambiance was amazing. The location is very good and easy to find. Quick they don't take cash so be prepared with a Credit Card if any. We had cash only but we had a credit card for emergency and this was one of the places we used it.

Yelp
Came for a quick cappuccino (best we've had in Florence) and came back 30 min later for a snack and more cappuccinos that turned into a meal. Super chill and truly some of the best food we've had in Italy. Vegetables were amazing esp the spinach and pecorino cheese on the plate. Chicken was exceptional quality and great taste. Artichoke salad very simple very good. Smoothie bowl only had a tiny taste but epic (açaí bowl pretty much). Nice little surprise treat. Didn't expect much but blew me away. Would even elevate it all the way up to a "must pop in" (MPI) if in Firenze. Prego

Yelp
I heard about this place from a show hosted by Stanley Tucci. It's away from the tourist areas and mostly frequented by locals. I had the Poached Eggs w/truffles and the Crostone Salmone. My god, the salmon with the Tzatziki and capers surprised me. It was delicious. The poached eggs were very good with spinach and truffles. I highly recommend this hidden gem to all.

Yelp
Small wine window! We did not take advantage of this as we came here for brunch. They have prix fix 25 euro complete with eggs, yogurt, choice of toast topping, beverage and dessert! Plenty of food! Fresh juices were made to order. Staff was lovely and service was patient with our tourist English.
google avatar

Madelynn K.

Yelp
Only putting a review on the wine window. Yes, we were able to order from the wine window. Yes, the wine was tasty. Yes, we did it again and came back the same day and ordered another round through the wine window and had great conversation with total strangers as we enjoyed our bicchieri of vino on the sidewalk on a glorious warm summer night.
google avatar

Yelp
I came here on a Friday night with my husband and were seated right away. The food we ordered was amazing, so flavorful. I think this might have been one of our favorite meals in Florence. Our server recommended the Pecorino white wine and it was delicious and paired so well with our food. Super fun place, there's a lot of people hanging out outside drinking.
google avatar

Yelp
It's a trap. Lots of peeps standing around. Walk by and keep going.couldn't find any other wine windows though.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful and cozy little place. Very welcoming with excellent service. A little more limited menu than most but enjoyed my favorite past dish during a 10 day visit to Italy, spaghetti with pancetta and pistachios. Awesome little place for a lingering lunch

Mithra A.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was good. Not like US service but for Italian standards - very good. With trying for their food rather than just their wine window.

Ghamdan A.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. My wife and I stumbled upon this brunch spot while walking down the street. Located away from all of the touristy areas. Food is remarkable. Eggs are absolutely out of this earth. Highly suggest the Turkish eggs. It comes with poached eggs in a yogurt filled bowl. Guaranteed to make your tastebuds cry for more. Decor and vibes very modern! 20/10 rating!!!
