Why Your Next South African Safari Should Be in KwaZulu-Natal

"At the Babanango Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, I spent more than an hour tracking a collared cheetah by her satellite signal with guide Musa Mbatha and wildlife monitors Bongani Khumalo and Tumelo Sathekge, watching her flop down in the shade after a kill — an encounter Mbatha said might not happen again with two male lions recently reintroduced to the area. I learned the reserve was created in 2017 when the Emcakwini Community Trust and two other landholding community groups partnered with German philanthropists Hellmuth and Barbara Weisser; reintroductions began in 2018 and, along with remediating former cattle pasture, have helped black rhinos, giraffes, lions, and cheetahs begin to thrive (elephants were brought back shortly after my visit). It’s described as one of the largest rewilding programs in South Africa in the last 20 years, and rather than promising easy big-game sightings it offers the chance to join tracking teams, monitor how reintroduced wildlife adapt, meet researchers, and explore cultural sites such as millennia-old San rock art, recurring Iron Age kiln finds, and nearby 1879 Anglo-Zulu War battlefields." - Heather Richardson Heather Richardson Heather Richardson is a journalist based in Cape Town, South Africa. Great Game Reserve which is Quite Young and still needs to be developed. The Landscape is breathtaking and really wonderful. If you Are more into seeing animals this might Not be the Right Place for now. They have a wide Range of Game in this Reserve but as for now you get them Hardly to see or we have just been unlucky. Nevertheless we enjoyed the landscape and had a Great walking Safari with Mr. X We stayed at Matatane Camp. The Chalet we had was Great and clean with Outdoor Kitchen and Nice view

This is undoubtedly the most panoramic and visually spectacular game reserve I've been to. The service is 5 star and the accommodation is equally as good. You certainly won't be disappointed by the exquisite gourmet food on offer. The game drives are conducted by expert guides and include a coffee stop on the morning drive, and sundowners on the afternoon drive. Although this is a Big 5 game park, the game viewing was a bit on the thin side and could do with a boost in antelope numbers.

Absolutely rates as one of the top Game Reserve experiences I have ever had. I was based there for a week with a student group and we loved every minute of it, especially the Conservation Intervention where we watched a cheetah get a new collar!

Our visit to Babanango Game Reserve was nothing short of magical. We went for training and were met with untamed beauty This reserve offers an unforgettable blend of luxury, authenticity, and deep connection with nature. Every moment felt thoughtfully curated, and the level of service across the reserve was simply world-class. We stayed for 10 nights and had the opportunity to explore each of the lodges - each one with its own charm and character: Madwaleni River Lodge – A world-class sanctuary of sophistication. Overlooking the White Umfolozi River, the lodge combines refined luxury with a deep respect for its environment. I rate this one of the top 10 ultra-luxury lodges in South Africa! Babanango Valley Lodge – A tranquil retreat nestled among lush hills. The hospitality here was heartfelt, the rooms beautifully appointed, and the atmosphere serene. Zulu Rock Lodge – Elevated elegance with dramatic views that stretch for miles. We’ll never forget the sundowner by the infinity pool as the sky turned shades of gold and crimson. The staff were warm, intuitive, and made us feel completely at home. Matatane Camp – The soul of the wild. This rustic yet comfortable bush camp gave us a real taste of adventure without sacrificing comfort. Evenings around the campfire, sharing stories under the stars, were some of the most memorable parts of our stay. The People – What truly sets Babanango apart is its people. Every staff member we encountered—from front of house to rangers to chefs to housekeeping—was professional, warm, and genuinely proud to be part of the reserve. Their care and attention to detail elevated our experience to something truly extraordinary. Whether you're a first-time safari traveler or a seasoned bush lover, Babanango Game Reserve offers something rare—a place where luxury meets authenticity, and every moment is made with purpose.

Had the most amazing experience at Babanango Game Reserve seeing lions (mating!), rhinos, hippos and even incredible insects. A fascinating majority community-owned game reserve and rewilding project, only opened 4 years ago and already introduced 2,000 animals; with impressive impact on employment in the area. Beautiful surroundings, great facilities and friendly, attentive staff. We will certainly be back! Thanks especially to Henrik, our guide, who made our game drive so informative, memorable and fun.
