Babka & Kranz - Gastro Obscura

"Opened in December 2022, Babka & Krantz bears the distinction of being the only Jewish bakery in Berlin’s 750-year-old bakers’ guild, or the Bäcker-Innung Berlin. Being accepted into the prestigious association is no easy feat. Certain standards for craftsmanship and quality, as well as a commitment to upholding traditional baking techniques, must be met by every bakery to be approved. Plus, Germany has stringent regulations for becoming a certified baker including formal education and vocational training. The concept here revolves around a fusion of Eastern European and Israeli cuisines, with a focus on traditional Jewish pastries. Owners Marcin Liera-Elkin and Shahar Elkin dole out their favorite sweet and savory pastries, including two versions of braided bread inspiring the shop’s name: babka baked according to Marcin’s Polish grandmother recipe, as well as krantz from Shahar’s homeland Israel. Over 90 percent of the baked goods are made using organic ingredients, and the house-made yeast dough is allowed to rest for up to 48 hours. The bakery’s warm and inviting atmosphere, coupled with delectable offerings, has made it a popular haven in the capital’s up-and-coming Friedenau neighborhood. It’s the perfect place to spend a couple of hours sipping coffee and savoring a sweet hazelnut babka with creamy nougat cream or a savory Sabich bagel, seasoned with zaatar and topped with aubergine and hummus, are definite favorites. The inclusion of Babka & Krantz as the first Jewish bakery in the guild is a remarkable milestone, highlighting the evolving nature of Berlin’s gastronomic landscape and the celebration of diverse cultural influences within the city’s vibrant food scene. The bakery has become an integral part of Berlin’s steadily growing Jewish community, particularly among Israeli expats (by some figures, more than 10,000 have moved to Berlin in the last decade). It’s a testament to the power of good food and the importance of preserving culinary traditions for future generations. Delicious, freshly baked Sunday morning Brötchen, super yummy and a lovely end to the weekend. As it was my first time visiting this bakery, it was lovely to get some info on what’s what and have a nice chat with the bakers.

They have really great variety in all their offerings, which is much appreciated. Really lovely bagels and babka, prices are fine and the staff is helpful. Unfortunately, when I was there, they were a little bit low on their bread options but you can't expect them to be stocked to the roof all the time. When I asked whether I could sit outside (where people were already sitting, the other chairs were just tied up still), one of the staff unfortunately rolled his eyes at this and it took the manager to move the staff into action on even just responding to my question? But everyone has their bad days and the overall experience was really friendly and the counseling on what to choose was nice - and I did get to sit outside so no harm done, great experience here!

Babka, Krantz, Rugelach or Bagels? This place is a so good. They even have a huge variety of coffee specialities. Hidden secret in Berlin. I am sad I didnt know before. We will come back for sure.

It hurts to deduct one teeny tiny star, but I'll come to that. Let me indulge in all those breads and fluffy pastries that we have enjoyed this morning at this beautiful, great smelling Cafe and bakery. We already noticed people walking fast this morning to the cafe, so I urge you to reserve a table if you want to dine in. The breads, the pastries and the warm welcome you can expect head you off to a great start. Everything is absolutely fresh and really greatly put together in detail. The different varieties of bagels and the toppings they have on offer, leaves you no room for your own imagination of the breakfast or lunch bagel. The combinations of flavours, of seeds, vegetables are just really great new flavours that we've been waiting for, finally. I definitely loved the jemenite coffee with the amazing addition of ginger and cinnamon, it's a near Christmas feel. Obviously they are busy as bees since they have got the outstanding approval by the Bäckerei Innung, which gave them an A for their bakeware and quality. Now Germans do know their bread like no other, so this is a fine accomplishment. The only really small detail I have to criticise which I believe also is not really in their power is the small area of tables and chairs, which mostly seats you right in front of the door so you get lots of cold air unfortunately. But I believe they will boom and soon there will be more space or a new place or a new idea for dining in. I'll be back many times and I cannot recommend it any more, than it's already done. Fabulous team, food and place. Rogelach galore ❤️

I've been wanting to try this place ever since I read about it in Ex Berliner magazine. Sooooo good! Like melt in your mouth delicious! My daughter and I had two different Babushkas and were enjoying every bite with our cappuccinos. Also ordered a bagel with feta cheese, olives and tomatoes and it was just as good. Really fresh ingredients! Couldn't leave without taking some bagels to go! Will definitely be back and I'm glad I found this gem not too far away from me.

Went back again and again for the Babkas. Very fun and creative rotating variety with a handful of super tasty staples. I will say, part of the reason I enjoyed the babkas so much was because I am a fan of a very doughy bun- sometimes bordering on underbaked. I think that's gooey and delicious, some people might think it is raw.
