On the Grid : Babka Budapest

"Babka Budapest is a brand-new restaurant in Ujlipotvaros. The owner of Babka, Nemesvölgyi Attila is a well known local face from Ujlipót, everybody loves to go to his places to have a coffee or a meal in a really lovely atmosphere. At his new place you can try some mediterranean food." - Bianka Bujdosó

The hummus was smooth, flavorful, and super fresh. I was also so happy to see they offer gluten-free bread, such a win for those of us with dietary needs! The only downside was that it was extremely hot inside, which made it a bit uncomfortable, but everything else from the food to the atmosphere was lovely, and the service was kind and attentive

I’m from a Middle Eastern country, so I know this type of food pretty well, and I really enjoyed the food. We actually went twice while we were in Budapest. The halloumi was a bit too salty for me, but everything else was awesome. The service was great too — everyone was really friendly. They were also super nice and let my wife use her laptop for a quick online meeting

We used to avoid Babka for years after a very disappointing experience about 3-4 years ago: we sat outside, our order was forgotten, and after waiting 1.5 hours without food, the manager came out to tell us they were closing the terrace. When we explained we had been waiting all this time, he quite arrogantly said it wasn’t his fault and blamed regulations, while the real issue was simply forgetting our order. They offered a leftover dessert without letting us choose, and we ended up paying a full bill for a very poor experience. Recently, we decided to give Babka another chance, and it was a much better visit. Portions and prices were fair, service was kind, the Middle Eastern flavors were pleasant, and the interior is cozy. Glad to see they improved, but I still remember the previous experience, so it took us a while to come.

*** Friendly staff, but INSANELY OVERPRICED *** So a couple of things, both good and bad: - The service was great, the waiters were very friendly and the food arrived quickly. The place is also dog friendly and we got a water bowl for our dog as well - but I guess this is normal for a dog friendly restaurant. - The muhammara tasted great, we tried many Lenanese/middle eastern restaurants in the city and I have to say that the muhammara here is the second best. An impressive achievement! - I was very surprised by the price of the lemonades. I was accustomed to paying around 1500 HUF for a 0,5L lemonade in other restaurants, so I was shocked to learn that here they cost 2,300 HUF, for a mere 0,3L size. This ruined some of the positives that the restaurant had going for it. - The portions of the main courses are also very small, a small mezze size (I had the beef cheeks and my wife had the halloumi cheese). If I’m paying for a main dish, then I want it to be more than just a small mezze - this was also a big disappointment. - Otherwise the main dishes tasted pretty good. Overall we left disappointed because we felt ripped off and will probably not return again for a second meal.

To begin with, the Service was great and the food came quickly. Also the Ambiente is nice. I ordered a Apple juice with sparkling water and a Shakshuka with Pita bread. We were pretty hungry and the portion sizes were really really small, I left still being hungry. Also the apple juice did not have any sparkling water in it and I didn’t like it at all. (1697 HUF is really expensive I think) As some previous people mentioned the price is a bit overpriced, so if you are looking for something with good value you are better off somewhere else. I would not come back for a 2nd time.

An absolutely delightful dining experience! The food is simply divine: each dish bursts with rich flavors and is beautifully presented. From the perfectly grilled kebabs to the creamy hummus and crispy falafel, every bite was a treat. The Prosecco was delicious, crisp, and refreshing. And the service? Truly exceptional—attentive, warm, and welcoming, making the meal even more enjoyable. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for an authentic and unforgettable culinary experience!

Really enjoyed this place. Delicious food, cozy atmosphere and friendly service. They offer indoor and out door seating. Try the hummus, the pistachio labne and the muhamara with pita all soooo good. Reserve ahead because it can get very busy.

This is one of my top spots for Middle Eastern food. The small plates are perfect for sharing and let you try a variety of delicious dishes, while the larger plates are generous and satisfying. The bread is amazing, and the drinks—especially the gins and lemonades—are fantastic. The atmosphere is super cool and vibrant, but make sure to book in advance, as it’s usually quite busy!
