Google
The food was good. The app was tater tots with bacon, scallions, crema, and cheese. It was very tasty but had it been I bit crisper they would have been a 5. My drink was a tapped apple cidery gravenstein that was absolutely refreshingly delicious. For dinner I had the fish Tacos. Once again, a four because there was not enough sauce nor enough fish and not to come with fries. Although I was told by the server beforehand, it was still a sacrilege. All hot sandwiches should have fries. The tables were spread out which was appreciated because you had a measure of privacy. The place was quite loud and it was 4:45 when we arrived. There are so many hard services there was nothing to calm the sound. There are so many restaurants in the area, I am not in a hurry to return. The service, however was impeccable. Micheal could not have been more kind , caring, and attentive. Major kudos to him.

Google
It was my first time here. Ian was a fantastic server! Food was delicious!! Accommodated our preferences. Pleasant service! Southwest Smash burger and meatloaf were delicious! Lemon meringue martini was very good.

We saw this place online and it looked good. It was brunch which was a bonus! The food was good, we sat at the bar and the service was great and the manager was back helping as needed. Would definitely eat there again.

Following my Goddaughter's first communion, Back40 was the first choice for dinner. We had 15 adults and 2 children. Considering it was a fairly large party, they had one large table and one smaller one right behind it that sat six. The waiter came over right away and was very friendly. Before taking our drink orders, he gave us time to get situated. My mom and I ended up getting the traditional eggs Benedict. My husband ordered corn beef hash eggs Benedict and my dad got a burger. All said their food was delicious. Despite the fact that the tables were a little close to other patrons dining, unsure if this was due to the extra table they added for us or if this was the norm, and the limited menu, I would’ve loved to have more choices for brunch, I would still give a solid 5 stars. You will definitely leave full, prices are reasonable, service and food were excellent.

Google
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Back 40 blew me away! We ordered the Ribeye Melt, Mac and Cheese, Loaded Tots, and Rare Tuna Tacos—every single dish was packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. The standout of our experience though? Alexa! Her service was absolutely phenomenal—warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. She made us feel right at home and elevated the whole dining experience. Great food, cozy atmosphere, and top-tier service. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
We dined here for the first time and ordered brunch. The omelettes were delicious, especially the shaved steak substituted caramelized onions. Ian our server was awesome and much appreciation to the chef that made our plates celiac friendly. Great experience, reasonable prices. We will definitely be dining here again.

Google
I went to the Back 40 for the first time on Taco Tuesday and sat at the bar. Kelsey the bartender was very friendly and a good bartender. I used to go to this venue when it was the Corner Tavern. I ordered a half price app (between 3 & 5, M - F) and some nachos with guac. They all were quite good and large portions for the money, though the nachos really needed the guac. I also ordered a scotch on the rocks, which seemed like a short pour and was surprised that I was billed 50 cents for ice in the drink. After that, I ordered the $7 margarita which more than made up for the scotch. Overall, a very good experience in a very nice venue. I'll be back. Still the 50 cents for alittle ice seems like rather strange business policy. I'll avoid that in the future.

Google
The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about their menu. The food is delicious with large portions. They have a nice patio and open airy interior. We thoroughly enjoyed the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, smash burger, and fried pickles. They also have a wide selection of beer and cocktails. We will definitely be going back.

Yelp
Came here with a few coworkers, and our server, Ian, is probably the main reason I'm giving a 5 star (but other aspects were great too!). We just ordered drinks and apps. Their beer selection changes, but they do have a lot of different local options. The apps were great - my favorites were the nachos and Brussel sprouts. The nachos were especially generous in portion. Good spot that I've been to a few times now, so it's a review that's been long overdue!

Yelp
A decent American bar spot with decent food. This place has a very Americana vibe with woods and slate stone and similar dishes to what would normally be serviced in this type of setting. I am not sure if the name is a reference to a lewd act or not, but the service looks to pull heavily from URI so do not expect much. The food is ok as well, the steaks are nicely cooked and the appetizers are fairly standard. The 'truffle' fries are just fries with truffle oil (no actual fungus) and the nachos are standard fair but the chips themselves have a barbecue seasoning on them. Odd. The Burgers are standard bar fare as well, perfectly genetic and hits the spot. Overall this place is just OK, but not a bad spot to meet friends for drinks and snack.

Yelp
We went for a burger on our way home from the beach area. Started with the buffalo cauliflower. It was ok. Nothing to write home about. We've had better but we've also had worse. I did love the blue cheese crumbles with it so it wasn't just liquid. We both got the southwest burgers. Could've used more guac on the burger and seasoning on the meat, but it was good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back there. But I would also probably look for a different place to eat being in the area as well.

Yelp
Went to the Back 40 on a Saturday Afternoon. Good place for a Burger and a Beer. I must say the Burger was tasty, the service was good. There where 3 of us and we were all satisfied. Prices are moderate, one thing to consider is it can be very LOUD, so if you are looking for quiet, this is NOT your place. The Burger was so good, I will definitely go back! I'll give it a 4.3 for the TASTY BURGER!

Yelp
How often does someone write a review at their table in the restaurant? Well I am! So I just came here with my wife and mother in law on a whim and WOW!!!! First the ambiance. Cozy, open, warm, I am not overwhelmed walking in. It feels cozy. Our server was amazing! Great kid! Ian your rocked! We liked you a lot thank you for amazing service tonight. Now for food. The most important piece. We got wings, pretzels, and truffle fries as apps. We were not disappointed! Apps were terrific. The beer cheese was incredible. Pretzels themselves, out of this world! Entries we all got sandwiches. My wife had the ribeye melt, and it was melt in my mouth delicious! My mother in law had the Cuban smash burger and it was sublime. My burger was the special caprese burger, I was so incredibly impressed with the cook and flavor! Don't pass by this place, drive right into their parking lot and have the meal of a lifetime like we just experienced and Back 40!

Yelp
This place was busier than expected, but pretty big inside and we were able to get a seat. The food was just ok. I had gotten breakfast, which was good. My friend ordered nachos, which ended up costing $26 and they were soggy, so she could barely eat them. What a waste of money! Our waitress was friendly, but service was slow. At the end when we told her we were in a bit of rush and she took the check/card, she just brought it near the register and proceeded to talk to the other servers. I thought maybe she was waiting for someone else to do it or something, but she literally just stood there and chatted and then after a while she processed the bill. Thought that was rude. Not sure I would go back again.

Yelp
When you walk in to an establishment and it has a smell like a 30 year old Applebees I should've turned around. I went to back 40 when they 1st opened and loved it, the ambiance, the food, the service. I moved away and decided to try it again as I always love their pulled pork nachos! What a disappointment the nachos had no cheese and the pulled pork was dry, the cheese sauce used to be so good but it tasted like jar cheese whiz. The server looked like she was on something very aloof and stand offish. The shepards pie was tasteless and all potato, and the tater tots were awful. Sorry back 40 but you've been downgraded to 2 stars, I will not be back

Yelp
I've been here twice, and honestly...ummmmm... let's put it this way, this is not one of the restaurants I recommend to people who are swinging by this locale. The interior of the restaurant is nice and clean (ok, yes, minus the flies that everyone talks about, but I'm talking about the surfaces being clean, and not sticky and stuff), and the staff are great, but the food just isn't quite up there, for the prices they're charging. Like, it's not bad, but it's not stellar either. Menu isn't too large, but somehow, it's all over the place. I'm having a hard time pinning down exactly what kind of food they specialize. I forgot what I had the first time I was here (was only about 6 months ago, but that's how forgettable it was); I had the shrimp aglio olio the second time. And it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't good enough to make me want to go there again for the dish. Pasta texture felt like boxed pasta. I mean, it felt like something I could do for myself at home in 10-15 minutes. All-in-all, it was just a very meh experience.

Yelp
Had a small retirement party (20 people) they were very accommodating to our needs the appetizers were delicious especially the spinach artichoke dip and teriyaki chicken bites!! The Caesar salad fantastic too. Very flavorful red sangria. The bartender was a pleasure and gave us wonderful service. Everyone at the party truly enjoyed themselves. Thank you

Yelp
We loved it! Great menu, reasonable prices, large portions, what's not to like! Our server, Carissa, did a great job serving us. We got the Brussels sprouts appetizer, which was huge, and delicious. My wife ordered swordfish, and I ordered bacon mac and cheese. Both meals were enormous, and delicious. We'll be going back in two weeks. It's a long drive, 1.25 hours, but we'll worth it. This place has a great vibe, very patriotic!

Yelp
Second visit. Love the ambiance. Comfy bar seating. Hooks under the bar for your bag are always welcome! Staff are lovely. This time we ordered sandwiches off their seasonally changing Fall menu: chicken sandwich and salmon burger. It took way too long for the food to arrive for the half dozen guests currently in the restaurant, only a few of which were waiting on food. Maybe the kitchen guy is working alone? The chicken was very crispy. The spicy sauce was tasty, but more would have been welcome. The side of fries were warm at best. First taste of the salmon burger was that the salmon had gone bad. The marinated onions have a strong vinegar flavor. My upgraded Ceaser salad wasn't mixed well with the dressing so some of it was a clump of dressing while another was no dressing at all. Didn't eat most of this meal. I still like the ambiance and would like to return, but I'm not sure I'd order food here again. Maybe an app? My top shelf vodka soda was ten and a half. Draft beer was six.

Yelp
Had a delicious Caesar salad, hubby had the Shepard pie with braised beef. Both were so good! Also had appetizer of Asiago pretzels with two delicious dips, cheese and mustard. Server was attentive and friendly. Very pleased with our visit and will be back.

Yelp
Every time I drive out to Newport, this place is PACKED, which is quite the surprise because it really seems like it's in the middle of nowhere. I've always wondered if it's because there's nowhere else around or if it's legitimately good. Having now stopped, I can say the latter is true. It's pub food, but with quality ingredients and prepared well. There's even some creative takes on a meal such as the Thanksgiving turkey sandwich, because honestly gravy and cranberry just makes any turkey sandwich better. Overall, the indoor decor looks like it could be featured on the Magnolia channel with its slightly rustic and on trend usage of various industrial elements. However, I imagine that on a nice summer day, the porches are clearly the best place to be.

Yelp
We have done here a couple of times. Food and service are excellent. Definitely one of our favorites for brunch..

Yelp
Got together with some friends who brought along their sweet and adorable 1 1/2 year old for brunch this past weekend. We called ahead and when we arrived at the restaurant we were seated right away. There appeared to be a large baby shower happening in one half of the restaurant and brunch in the other, the bar was also half full when we got there at noon. We received our drinks right away, which included mimosas with OJ, pineapple and cranberry juice, all were delicious!! Our food arrived approximately half an hour after we ordered which included four adult meals and one kids meal. Everything was correct and we dug right in. The brunch is to die for, I would recommend Back 40 for adults and families!!

Yelp
Amazing customer service from the moment I called to get on the list to be seated to the end. Zach was our server and he made amazing recommendations that we bought 3 main courses for my husband and I. Very loud environment on Friday evening so maybe go there in the afternoon if you want a quieter atmosphere where you can hear the people at your table. The Back 40 burger and fries were my favorite meal out of the 3 meals I tried today. So thank you Zach for recommending that! Fish tacos were okay, they had a little kick to them and I can't eat spicy anymore so if you're sensitive to spice like I am, skip the fish tacos. The Mac & cheese has a bit too much breading but not bad. My son had the chicken tenders and he had fun playing with his food and he said it was delicious so I'm always happy when they're happy! Nachos were also good, they had seasoning salt on the chips, not too bad. Had the "Light My Fire" margarita and substituted the ghost tequila for patron silver and it was perfect! We will be back but earlier in the day.

Yelp
Ordered their Bourbon Oak Burger and it wasn't that bad. ($16) Cooked well, soft bun and decent size. Could have used more barbecue sauce and they barely put any onion strings. A big juicy onion ring would've been much better. The fries that came with it were hot and crispy. Almost everybody seemed to be eating a burger or sandwich so that's probably the safe order. It wasn't busy but service was a little slow. Chill atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
Decent for bar food and a beer. Nashville hot chicken wasn't really authentic. This has a dry rub not the hot sauce you would think. Service was good.
google avatar

Vanessa B.

Yelp
There is good parking space on both ends of the restaurant. When you come in you notice there is a porch setting that looks like fun to eat / hangout outside. There's different styles of seating. A big bar with several alcohol and mocktail options. The chairs are comfy by the bar. The food was prepared very quickly. The server provided the food fast and asked about the order. There is a large back yard space ! Looks like there is outdoor seating
google avatar

Yelp
Great service! Lots of variety for a diverse group. Food came out promptly, good portions and flavorful. We will be back.

Yelp
Poor service not attentive too busy eating their own lunch to bother to correct the wrong meal I got I was shocked how little they gave a shit

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, nice bar, lots of outdoor seating. Food is very tasty, but the value is not there for me. The salmon was cooked perfectly, but for $25 I would rather be somewhere by the water. Besides for the value on the salmon, the succotash was okay. The salmon had a nice golden crisp on the outer layer, The cheesesteak was very tasty, but was lacking steak as it didn't make the full roll it was made on. I liked the flavors mixed in with the fresh jalapeño. We upgraded to the truffle fries and they were good putting the dish over $20. The burger was delicious and it was a good size coming in at $15. If you like the flavors of the famous Big Mac, you'll be pleased that they nailed the special sauce. The service was great and the food was good, but for the money I personally wouldn't make another trip.
google avatar

Moon D.

Yelp
Service was good. Chips disgusting. Food overall was poor. We had 2 flys hovering around our meal. The pretzels were too salty. My drink had more ice than liquid. Unfortunately will not return.

Yelp
Came for drinks with a few friends. They had life acoustic music which was nice. They also have outdoor seating on both the front and back porches. Would love to come for food one day.

Yelp
This place is Legit! I have passed by Back 40 no less than a hundred times going back and forth from Newport. The red signage is very recognizable. Yesterday we finally stopped by. And makes us wish we stopped by earlier. The restaurant is very large. I always thought it was a little hole in the wall when we passed by it but it certainly is not. Plenty of parking and they keep the grounds well manicured. I'm a grass guy and it's always nice to see when businesses keep everything nice and clean. Check in was easy. They don't take reservations so we called ahead and put our names on the list. We got a confirmation saying to arrive by 6:30. It was a Saturday night so the place was packed but you can see that they still had a few tables available. We checked out the menu and ordered a few items. A pitcher of red sangria, the tuna special, their signature chicken sandwich, wings and the chicken parm. The red sangria is pretty refreshing and the price can't be beat at $22. When we first tasted it couldn't detect even a hint of alcohol. My wife said it's juice. Don't be fooled folks. It will catch upto you. She couldn't drive afterwards. Haha. Food overall was very good. The chicken parm was well cooked and the rigatoni was filled with marinara sauce which I like. The chicken sandwich was great. My wife's tuna special was very healthy tasting. The alcohol prices at Back 40 was very very reasonable. And I think that's their secret sauce. People love cheap alcohol and it brings people back. Food is really solid and the service was quick. They did mess up the bill and had a few things that I didn't order on there but they quickly fixed that. Overall a very nice restaurant. Really no issues. Try it out!

Yelp
Absolute great atmosphere, been three or four times over the last couple of years and each time has been a great experience. Food and cocktails have been on point each time and have enjoyed each of our visits with fond affection. Very professional service and attentive waitstaff have made for enjoyable times here.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
Really nice restaurant. Large menu with anything from vegetarian to burgers. The staff was very prompt and nice. All of our choices were excellent....the burger, the veggie burger and the veggie omelette. The choices really cover the spectrum from salads to comfort food, you are bound to find something that will fit your palate and mood. Good choice if you are in the area.

Yelp
Came in on a Christmas, Eve of December 2022, Waiter was very nice and attentive. I ordered corn beef and hash and replaced the toast with home fries and a side salad w/House salad dressing (white, balsamic vinaigrette.) A nice little creamy vinaigrette with a honey mustard taste to it. The mixed greens for the salad was a good selection (Didn't feel heavy or watery). Corn beef and hash is also made with good selection of diced potatoes and chorizo. Pros: Good quality and I nothing left to bring back to the kitchen. Service: wonderful. Andrew is really good at his job. Not so great is there is no oat milk or almond for lactose intolerant individuals such as myself and a lack of Wifi. I recommend this place to anyone who wants to venture out the city.

Yelp
Attended group event for large group but only 7. Very accommodating. Excellent service by Lindsey C. Separate checks. Lindsey was fantastic, friendly, quick to refill, get order, bring food. Definitely will return. Friday 6 pm

Yelp
Service great, prompt and friendly. My only complaint was the bathrooms as they were dirty and not kept up
google avatar

Yelp
They are very nice and friendly. Amazing food but a bit pricey. I got salmon last time I was there and I think it was the best I have ever had except for my mom's salmon. There food is cooked thoroughly and place looks very cool. I love how the place looks.

Yelp
Flys, cold food, flat beer. We would go there often, but it has been going down hill. This was our last time. Sorry
google avatar

Yelp
Service was good. Food was good. Nothing stood out. The restaurant it self was big and it had a nice vibe. If you're looking for a place for dinner with your family I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Great gastropub with hearty, tasty portions and a fantastic bar. Check in advance if there is live music. Outdoor eating in the back is great during the spring and fall.

Yelp
Been an OG back 40 customer since they opened, and have always had great service, yummy food and snazzy drinks. We seem to make it to Back 40 more often on Sundays for Brunch than any other time. The boozy coffees are delish and you cannot go wrong with any of the Benedicts they offer. My guy likes the hash benedict and I enjoy the Nashville bennies or the pulled pork. (Side note- took a star off for the two separate times Ive asked for poached hard and they come out runny- sorry guys. I cant do runny eggs!!) The truffle homefries are great as well as the hollandaise sauces that come with it. Each one has a different vibe. Cereal shots are always tasty, but honestly the bloody mary's go best with the bennies. Staff is always usually attentive and friendly, unless they are too busy like they were last Sunday but management made a full recovery and of course we'll be back. Let us know next time Olivia and her man come through, we'll meet them for brunch ;)

Destiny S.

Yelp
Food is always crappy... ordered nachos with added pulled pork and it barely had anything on them at all... asked the server why it didn't have any cheese and they said "it probably burnt off" Only go for drinks.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
I have been here several times and continue to enjoy it. The Seasons Change Salad is one of my favorite salads, but you may want to ask for the dressing on the side. I also really love the nachos with pulled pork. I appreciate that they have a nice outside option and the tables aren't too close together (inside or out) for those who still like some distance. It's a go-to for me both in-person and carry out.

Yelp
Had to fit in a quick dinner en route to a concert at the Odean so this was on the way. A large space, packed, and lively on a weekday. Oodles of parking. Very good service. Menu is large and best termed "upscale bar food". We split the Buffalo cauliflower (a bit spicy) and asiago pretzels (not a winner for 2 of us) as appetizers. Entrees were huge portions: miso cod, steak frites poutine, mac and cheese w/ short ribs, and "dinner meatloaf". Other than the steak frites - all entrees are under $20. Happy campers and damages for 4 with tip and a few cocktails and wines were $200.
google avatar

Lenore M.

Yelp
Love this place! Bar with lots of sports on tv and live music sometimes plus awesome food from mac n cheese to fancy fish tacos. We loooove the buffalo cauliflower and the servers are so nice. Always crowded but not too long a wait.
google avatar

Wayne R.

Yelp
We drove by on a Saturday afternoon and saw a lot of cars in the pkg lot so decided to try it. We sat at the bar since it was just the two of us. Food was excellent, had the chicken bites and Truffle fries. IPA beer selection was great as well. Fast service and friendly staff. Too bad we were just traveling by as we would definitely make this a go to spot.

Franky F.

Yelp
Been here several times after visiting the veterans cemetery. Went today, and it was disgusting enough not to eat there. We actually banged down our beers to get out asap. Flies everywhere and the whole place smells stagnant and musty. The bar was dirty, menus were filthy and the bathrooms? Both disgusting and the smell was like they have never been cleaned or sanitized. This is clearly a place for kids to work and hang out. Why anyone would eat there is a mystery. We saw people leaving full plates of food. Board of health needs to visit that place.
google avatar

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in southern RI. The baked mac is amazing, unfortunately they took off one of my family's favorite dishes done by them (the steak poutine!!) but otherwise everything that we have had here has been amazing. I'm picky about meat and when I thought mine was too pink for my taste, waitress took back into the kitchen and brought another asap. Staff is friendly, atmosphere is great, place is clean :) Specials have been tasty too

Kaitlyn C.

Yelp
Came here for brunch with some friends food was great and my friends split a mimosa bucket and the server was super accommodating to a pineapple allergy! Would love to go back!

Lucas C.

Yelp
I had high expectations going to this place, the buffalo cauliflower was excellent, the servers were courteous. Sadly, the food did not live up to the hype. The truffle fries were just like-warm fries with a truffle dip. The premiere 40 burger was COMPLETELY unseasoned and a complete let down. I'm not sure if they were training a new chef or what. I won't be back.

Hannah B.

Yelp
I went to dinner here with a friend and had outstanding service. We had to wait a little extra time because of a problem with the kitchen and the manager came out and apologized profusely. Everyone was super accommodating. Our server Lindsay was also amazing and incredibly friendly! Would absolutely go back!

Yelp
Ate here on the way out of Newport and it was a great decision Buffalo Cauliflower app was delish!! Was so full took most of my bbq sandwich home. Drinks were refreshing and tasty too

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place because it looks so inviting inside & out, but the food...the food y'all, was super disappointing... My husband ordered the Mac & Cheese and added chicken-the biggest mistake of this dish was the chicken that was obviously pre-made/thawed-out-refrigerator-chicken. The cheese sauce left much to be desired... I'll give them kudos for the cavatappi noods though, they're the best. I ordered the fish tacos...at least the chipotle aioli had some flavor? :/ claimed to be fresh, local cod, however it also tasted like pre-made Gorton's frozen fish. The mango salsa was ok...again, gave me store bought vibes. My kiddo had the kid's tenders and fries, and of course I needed to try them...the chicken tenders were similar to McDonald's chicken nuggets...just shaped like tenders. He threw them after tasting, but with a toddler that could go both ways... I will say the tropical cider was good. Asiago pretzel appetizer was okay. I guess we were disappointed because for a restaurant, we were expecting SOMETHING to be freshly made and unfortunately, everything tasted like it came out of the freezer section of a local grocery store. For the prices of the food, definitely not worth the buck. My husband did say his beer at least tasted like the keg lines were clean! So there's a star! Our waitress was also incredibly sweet & attentive. If I could offer stars just based on her service, she would get all 5 stars.
