Back In The Day Cafe

The food was decent. The tortilla did not taste home made. The chicken tenders were not flavorful. The waffles were fluffy and tasty. The prices are quite outrageous in my opinion. $13 for one waffle and two little chicken tenders? The inside definitely felt “back in the day” and the wall decor and props were a great setup.

This is my third time here! GINA!! Thank you so much for your service! So kind and welcoming, I love places that have servers that treat their customers like someone they know! Food was PHENOMENAL and honestly my stomach is so happy. 😁 Thank you back in the day cafe for your service as well! Keep it up! Maybe consider comin to Odessa? We’re tired of dumplings. ☺️

Always looking for and off the path cafe, I prefer it over any chain restaurant. This place reminds me of the café back home. Sweet tea was good and it comes in a big cup. I ordered the chicken spaghetti and Mac n cheese. If your looking for a large portion this is not for you and its a tad pricey for the portion, but it is delicious. Our waitress was really nice and checked on us throughout our meal. Atmosphere was a little noisy for some but just what i expect. Great place to eat and the scenery inside is old school. Nice setup!

I just spoke to the owner about the takeout order. I got today fried catfish it tasted like it had mildew and it made me sick. I am a senior citizen and my immune system is not that good to handle that food and I know that the clientele there is a lot of seniors. I just didn’t want anybody else to get sick. The manager said I was threatening her if I posted a review. I never got any bad food from the previous Owners

Ok Back in the day cafe! I see you!! Y’all have done some great updates!! The fried squash was so good I was sad we finished our boat. The server was really sweet and took her time to answer our questions. We didn’t feel rushed at all. It was just like back in the day when going out to eat was a treat. Can’t wait to come back.

Food was really good and the amount you get is filling. We waited over an hour for our meals (chicken fried chicken and chicken fried steak), but it was worth the wait. The chocolate Bundt lava cake was a miss for me. The Bundt cake was tough on the bottle and room temperature. Wouldn’t even melt the ice cream.

Good comfort food, service was good the server came by multiple times to check on us, if you are looking for good diner food this is the place.

This place is a pretty okay place. The food took 40 minutes but the quality of the food makes up for that time. The place is quite crowded on Saturdays and Sundays so we were lucky to get a seat. But overall a good place. That’s why I give this place 4 stars.

The food is always good. Everything we have ever order is perfect. Service is Top notch always. It does get a little busy on Saturday mornings bell worth the wait!!

Really cute diner type vibe inside this cafe. Have been looking for a good breakfast spot in Midland. Forgot to take a picture of our food other than the pancakes which were so so good! Friendly service and overall had a great experience here.

Yikes that food was rough. We were in town for a couple of days and saw this place on yelp. That was some of the worst breakfast food I've had in awhile. Such an odd place. We found a few gems while in Midland. This was not one of them.

Says open until 2PM today on every website from Google to Yelp. Walked in and was told by a rude guy with a rag in his back pocket that they were closed. We nicely explained that it says open until 2PM online because we were concerned about it happening to other guests who wouldn't understand. He proceeded to instead tell us that it wasn't his problem because they were open until 2PM Monday-Friday but closed at noon on Saturday and he didn't care what it said online. We gave up trying to be helpful and will not try them another day due to his rudeness. We were willing to shrug off online errors because it happens to anyone. But rudeness from the establishment? Not okay. We are heading to the Red Plate Diner instead. Highly recommend you do the same!

The food was great. The service A+ and we loved the ambiance. So nice to find a great, clean restaurant that provides excellence for their customers. Price was reasonable as well. 's off all of our criteria for a great breakfast experience. Even Santa was here this morning.

My FAVORITE breakfast spot in Midland TX!! The food is tasty, amazing, affordable, big portions!! The staff is WONDERFUL! It's always a pleasure to walk in or call. They greet you with a smile and if you order for pick up, they will repeat everything to get it right. The place is super cute if you guys dine in as well. Definitely my favorite place. When traveling we live stopping at local eats. This was a very interesting place for sure. Staff were super nice but for was a little bland.

Very tasty burritos and affordable. Service was exceptional and the sauce was amazing.

Frozen hashbrowns, nothing is home cooked. Won't go again. "Back in the day"sounds like the food will be awesome but so disappointing. Bottom line, I see all the cars parked in front and wonder if I went to the wrong place. I may try them again, maybe. Probably won't.

We wanted to have an old fashioned home style meal, so we went BITDC. No wait seating, simple but satisfying menu. My wife ordered a grilled turkey sandwich with cheese and a jalapeño spread, with home made potato chips. I ordered meatloaf with green beans and coleslaw with a yeast roll. We had water and I decaf coffee. Our order arrived quickly, hot and fresh. Very enjoyable RBI's evening. Our waitress wasn't cheerful and happy, and very good!

This is like a Mom & Pop Cracker Barrel with comfort food and eclectic decor. The service was great, especially for a town where the service industry struggles. Our server Robin was friendly, helpful, competent, prompt and personable! 5 stars for service! I knocked it down a star because, while the food tasted good, they obviously use a lot of frozen ingredients. The sausage patties, rolls, and hash browns were all obviously not fresh or made in house. But, then again, this is Back in the Day Cafe! Come expecting great service but not fresh food made in house.

OMG!!! Where do I begin...with the "Back in the day" special; with pancakes." The meal included 2 eggs, shredded hashbrowns, 2 thick slices bacon, and two of the fluffiest and creamiest pancakes cooked to perfection. A cup of coffee with cream and a glass of water." This is the first time we've had breakfast in a restaurant in about a year. The service was excellent. The restaurant was relaxing, cozy and comfortable. We will return. Thank you.

What is the season for cornbread. I was told it was out of season at your restaurant. You must be from up North. Cornbread is a traditional southern bread. Southerns even eat it with a glass of milk for a bedtime snack. It goes with all vegetables, especially vegetable soup which you do not have. You say "traditional southern comfort food". I don't think so.

Yea his is a nice looking place. Food was decent, but People really needs to know how to Cool scramble soft. Egg came out on the dry side. Order biscuits and gravy sausage. The sausage comes out as a patty and not in the gravy.

Best breakfast and waitstaff in town! Ordered different items off the menu on several different occasions and have not been disappointed.

The most amazing service. The food was excellent and they went above and beyond to accommodate my family with food allergies! The atmosphere was completely adorable. Everything was beyond clean. Our waitress, Laura, was beyond amazing!!!

We found this jewel for breakfast after a doctors appointment today- and I wish we had known about it sooner!! The outside is pretty easy to miss but the inside is so nostalgic- fun storefronts, so clean and excellent food at great prices! I had the Blueberry French Toast and it was outstanding- No gelatinous fake blueberry pie filling. Thick Texas toast w a hint of cinnamon and a fresh blueberry syrup with real blueberries!! A thick slice of ham on the side and I was in heaven! My husband had the Back in the Day Breakfast- two eggs over easy with sausage, hash browns and pancakes- sounds ordinary but was extraordinary because it was done right! No hockey pucks for sausage, eggs really made over medium and hash browns that were tender on the inside and crisp on the outside. We will definitely be back!

Service was bad. Kitchen took foreve for a simple order. No lunch rush which I would have understood if there was a lunch rush. to top it off everyone that came in after us received there food before we did.

I normally don't write reviews or negative comments because I worked in restaurants for many years. This is just the worst situation that I've seen and the poorest solution ever! So I ordered lunch for myself and coworkers today for pickup. Alexa told us on the phone there would be an additional gratuity of 15% because we had 4 plates. Two lunch meal combos and two kids meals. I agree because we don't want to drive all over town and we are within walking distance. I was very puzzled over this and even googled it thinking it's something new. I've never heard of this! My coworker goes and picks up our order and I need an itemized receipt that doesn't get included with our order. We call and they agree to print one out. When I review the receipt their is an additional tip of $2.29 placed on my card that was not agreed upon as you can see with the second picture. One of my coworkers then tells me they did the same thing to her last week and they couldn't refund back her card and they gave her $10. I called and spoke to Alexas and she said she would remove the additional tip. I told her I was going over there to pick up the receipt and I wanted the gratuity of $8.24 removed because I didn't appreciate being over charged. I even asked to speak to the manger on duty and she stated there was no manager there. I walked in to the restaurant to get my receipt and Alexa attempts to hand me $10 and pulls me to the side of the door. I told her I needed it refunded back to my card. At this point she is so nervous and knows she has been busted thieving. I saw another waitress and asked her if I could talk to the manager. She stated she was the manager. When I told her what was going she stated she had been having issues with Alexa and I wasn't the first customer that this has happened to. I them ask to speak to her boss and I finally get a call back. She stated that Alexa has been reprimanded and I asked her if she still has a job. She stated she moved her to another station and she would longer be handling the debit and credit card machines. I told her I didn't feel like that was justification for her also doing it other people and she stated she's going to handle it. The feeling I get from this whole experience is it is happening and everyone that works there knows it is happening. People look at your receipts and make sure you aren't being charged additional fees. Trust me when I say I know how hard it is right now for servers everywhere but this is point blank theft and probably going on wide spread because of the reaction from the management. I will say that they removed the additional tip and gratuity in the long run but I can't even imagine how long this has been going on and how many people have been scammed already! Look at your receipts people.

We stopped in for lunch around 11:50 it was not busy at all. I guess its more popular around Breakfast. Ordered a green chile burger and my friend ordered steak fingers with two sides. The burger could of been better, it was big, but I was hoping there was more green chiles or like green chile on it with a slice of cheese. It was just queso with diced green chilis on it. It didnt taste that great on my burger, but I still ate it because I was hungry. The steak fingers I tried from my friends plate was okay, I am not a fan of steak fingers, but she said it was good. Overall , I give it an extra star for the staff being very friendly and welcoming when we stepped in the door and it is a family owned restaurant. I do not think I would go back, most of their menu items have "Fried" items.

It's been 6-7 yrs since last time food from here. I thought maybe it had improved but no, if anything it's worse. The CFS was tough, greasy and tasteless, the gravy pretty awful, the mashed potatoes tastless, like instant. The roll was dense and pretty bad, and the steamed veggies from the frozen food section and a bit overcooked. I really couldn't eat but a few bites, waste of money. For the quality it's waaaaaay over-priced. For this price, Wall St Bar is 100X better!

You have to really look hard to find this amazing place. The food is awesome. I love the meatloaf, it's fluffy, doesn't taste like just ketchup,. mash potatoes are great. Blackened tilapia it's the best I ever have, the seasoning it's perfect. It's a clean place, very welcoming and family-oriented. The waitresses are friendly and prompt, the entire staff and place it's very welcoming. Stop by and have an amazing home cook meal at this awesome place.

Really sweet waitresses. I loved looking at the deco or the restaurant and how unique it was. The food was really good! And the deserts took a little long to receive but were pretty good as well! Definitely would go back.

Restaurant wasn't busy at 8 am. The waitress brought our drinks and took our order right away. The men in the group ordered the chicken fried steak, which they raved about. The gravy was hot, which is a plus. Food was good. However, our plates were brought out one at time. The child's plate arrived first. The other five people waited patiently for their food. It took about 10 minutes by the time the first plate came out until the last plate. Maybe there was only one cook and no helper??

Very good southern comfort food. I order the chicken fried steak or fingers and they are as equally good as the other. However, they do charge entirely too much for a little extra gravy.

This has been our "go to" for home cooked meals. The selection is outstanding, the service phenomenal & the friendliness is outstanding! For Saturday breakfast, I highly recommend the chicken fried steak & eggs with home fried potatoes! It's every bit as good as my grandmother's & my Mom's home cooking! (They're retired chefs!) Do yourself a favor and visit here!

Really good homestyle cooking. I've only been for lunch, but the staff are super friendly and learn who you are after a few visits! I always leave happy! The chips are the best and the sweet tea is perfect!

Best breakfast in Midland. The breakfast special with the homemade Belgian waffle is as good as it gets. I had to laugh about the comment "unhealthy food." If you want tofu and salad eat in Austin. This is good old country cooking.

The atmosphere was great! I love all the building fronts especially the church. Service was great. Food was alright. I had the chicken fried steak and eggs. Not as impressive as other reviews I have seen. Super small portion. I would go back with friends to show them the decorating, but not for the food.

Really fun ambiance, almost feels like a stage at a play. There are walls painted as if you are in the middle of a town hall. I thought it was cute that the cashier area was painted as the town bank. Everyone is very kind and friendly. At first I had trouble finding the front door of the restaurant, so the server tried waving me down because I had passed it. The service is attentive and area is very spacious and clean. I ordered the chicken fried steak and the server warned me that it is very big. Best warning ever. I ended up taking my leftovers for lunch the next day. For my sides, I got the mash potatoes (very tasty) and the mac n cheese (eh, I wouldn't get it again). I'd like to try other things on the menu. The biscuit is toasty and buttery and overall it was a hearty meal. My two friends ordered the dinner special which was meat loaf. Consensus was that it was pretty ok- their sides of corn was a winner. They close pretty early at 8pm, so make sure to give yourself enough time to enjoy your meal!

I made the mistake of eating at the hotel (Hilton Garden Inn) on a recent business trip to Midland. I figured that there had to be somewhere better and I found it. In fact, I had breakfast there every single day after. Anything less than a five star rating for this place would not do. I absolutely love and adore mom and pop type places. Some of the best food comes out of hidden hole in the wall joints like this one. This place was a bit tricky to find on my first day. It is part of a strip center but you do have to go through some neighborhoods to get there first. It's worth the drive and effort. It doesn't look like much from the outside but when you go in, they have done the decor up to look like it is an old town. All staff were observing Covid 19 precautions. There is ample parking to be had. The staff were very friendly. I did not have to wait to be seated. Food was always delivered quickly and at the perfect temperature. I highly recommend their coffee as it was delicious. I also would recommend the Back In The Day Special. I ordered my eggs scrambled, bacon, hash browns, and pancakes. All of this was only $8.99 at the time of this review and was well worth it. I found it to be an excellent value and very filling. They also serve through lunch and dinner but unfortunately, I never made it back for those meal times. I'll have to make a better effort the next time business takes me Midland. Thank you for a pleasant dining experience.

This place is not very big so can get quite crowded at lunch. The hours are also not ideal. If you don't work close by and hard to make it out here. They had a special on the blackened cat fish that looked really good, but I got the steak fingers. They were probably the best I've had in town.

Looks like a change in ownership and pricing to go with it. Food was good but small portions for the price. Service about par for Midland, texas. I saw several people taking back food not done well. New cooks to go with the new owners need to get it together. Charges for every side condiment and 3% for using credit. Sounds like a great formula for closing down by this time next year. Hope your alchohol license and sales make up for the expensive food prices. Good luck.

Ate here for the first time this morning and I promise it won't be the last. Atmosphere: Walk thru the door and lighting is great, not dark, was meet immediately and seated. Very kind professional waitresses. The cafe was probably about 1/3 full, it has a very laid back family feeling. Hosting: Waitresses are kind, courteous and very friendly. Ordered drink and within 2 minutes they were delivered. Coffee never got low or cold. Ordered food when drinks were delivered and in 8 minutes received everything perfect as ordered. Cleannesses: This is important to me, and they receive a gold metal here. I looked for food scraps on floor, corners, under tables, nothing, impressed. Quantity and Quality of food: the portions were average but very tasty. Eggs were cooked perfect, over well, and pancakes were still hot enough to melt butter. I've eaten in hundreds of restaurants and cafés, by far the pancakes tops them all. The flavor and texture got a 10+. Conclusion: This is now my go to breakfast in Midland. I'll be doing lunch tomorrow and I'm sure it won't be disappointing. Hats off to the workers and owners at Back in the day cafe. Very good to know that a place still exist where the customer is satisfied and happy walking in and out of the doors. Thank you.

A good spot for a hearty chicken fried steak. The sides, however, were a let down. Watery and flavorless. Friendly service. Clean environment.

This is a hidden gem. The decor is great. There are store fronts so it looks like a small town of days gone by. It was my wife's birthday so they wished her a happy birthday on the movie theater marquee. The food is good ol' fashioned Southern cooking. My wife and I shared the chicken fried steak. There was enough for both of us and we took some home. It is HUGE! Others in our group had meatloaf, chicken, steak fingers, and tilapia. Everyone said their food was great. You won't go away hungry.

My parents and I waited over an hour after we were told that breakfast ends at 10a. So we ordered lunch at 10:15a and at 11:26a, after everyone else in the restaurant had been served their food who came after us (some of them having BREAKFAST), I went to ask for our food. They said lunch doesn't start until 11 (while it's still 26 minutes later) and the cook raised their voice with my parents and got upset causing a scene. We will not be back. Our waitress was not friendly and never came to the table with updates and the cook was out of line for arguing with my parents. We will not be back.

I ordered the hand-breaded steak fingers for lunch with fries and mac & cheese. These can only be called steak fingers if you're talking about Paul Bunyan's fingers...my word! I was served 3 HUGE steak fingers...each about 6-8" long and about 1.5-2" wide. They were delicious as were the sides and dinner roll. My only complaints were the crinkle fries were a big soft (not as crispy as I like) and $2.99 for sweet tea is ridiculous. I've grown accustomed to exorbitant prices for tea and soft drinks in the big chains and nicer restaurants but don't expect this type of unjustifiably high cost at a Mom & Pop. While they do serve up their drinks in a 32 oz. glass, a 1000% markup is just abusive. Thus, an otherwise 5 star rating is reduced to 4 stars. Even so, I'll be back to Back In The Day Cafe!

I have tried this place 3 times and each time it gets worse horrible service never have what I order and always ignore me when I ask for my glass of tea to be refilled or anything else even have to wait on my ticket this place iss a joke had flies I had to COMBAT as well the crowd looks like a bunch of people who refuse to realize how bad the service is waste of time and money the parking is horrible and the place is dirty as well .
