Just spent a week here and fell in love with Hakuba! The Backcountry Lodge was Just an incredible experience all around - the hosts truly *spoil* their guests and you will feel treated like royalty at every turn. Excellent location, excellent facilities, excellent breakfasts, and even the sweetest Golden Retriever in Japan! Such a wonderful experience, and wonderful hosts and location. You won't be disappointed!

TL;DR: If you see availability book now. 5 star food, 5 star accommodations, and a shuttle to get you where you need to go. My wife and I stayed here for 3 days and wish we could've stayed longer. Stepping it the lodge it has obviously been crafted with so much love and care. A crackling fireplace, a precious dog, and a pair of slippers - you are truly in a magical place. Waking up before the slopes you get served a homemade breakfast with delicious granola on the side. Then after returning from the slopes if you don't know what to do Eric (the owner) will PERSONALLY help you out with recommendations or reservations. Eric and Fumi (his wife) were so incredibly welcoming. To the point where Eric even went in-person himself to check-in on places for reservations. A note, if you are hesitating on the location please do not! Eric's home is gem off the beaten path and provides peace away from the crowded resort hotel area. His lodge was more than happy to shuttle us so don't worry!

Book NOW and thank me later if you’re looking for the perfect place in Hakuba :) we are a group of 6 traveling to Hakuba for snowboarding. I hesitated at first because this lodge looked far from center based on the map. Little did I know Eric, the host, provided personalized shuttle service anywhere within Hakuba for free from early morning to late at night to ski resorts, dinner and more. Our friend stayed at ski in/ski out in Happo and regretted his decision. Eric made sure we were fed, had our reservations for dinner because we are a big group, bought our train tickets to Kyoto, and ship our luggages on time. We’ve traveled to many countries, stayed at airbnbs to 5 star hotels and nothing measured up to our experience at this lodge. We felt we underpaid him for the extremely spacious, clean and beautiful rooms and the services he provided. One of the highlights of our trip.

What a fantastic place to experience the Hakuba Valley and all it has to offer. The lodge is tastefully furnished , spacious, warm and friendly. Eric and Fumie are great hosts that were incredibly helpful both before arrival and once we got there to help all aspects of our stay and experience. Fumie's breakfasts were definitely a highlight to with our family.

My family and I only stayed for one night after doing some snowboarding but the experience was amazing. The hospitality that Eric and his wife showed us was fantastic. My wife fell in love with their golden retriever immediately. The rooms are very spacious and cozy. My daughter loved sleeping in the loft. They have a very cozy fireplace area which is very relaxing. The breakfast was top notch and we all loved it. I would recommend any one who is in the hakuba area to try and stay here at least once.

Absolutely magical place for our stay near Tsugaike ski resort. The whole place is so homely and comfortable. Owner Eric and wife and their team made our stay unforgettable! There’s so much details in every part of the house to make you feel at home. The breakfast is out of the world, and we can’t wait to be back again !

Writing this review a bit late but I definitely owe this one to Eric (the owner of the property). Hakuba has been a must visit on Christmas since last 3 years and this time i chose Backcountry Cottage (and i made the best choice)||Eric and his wife are the best hosts when it comes to knowing your Customer needs and Hime (Golden Retriever, Star of the property) is the Cherry on the top. Right from Day 1, we felt like its a Home Coming on a Festival. The property has cozy and beautiful view rooms. A nice fire place and a common area (if you’d like to dine). They serve delicious breakfast !||A must mention is you should accompany Hime when she goes for a walk in snow. You would want to be a child again.||Eric has been like a God sent to me when my car broke down in middle of snow (about 10 kms away from the property after checking out). He personally drove to this Dangerously slippery road where my car was stuck. He helped us in reaching out to JAF and getting the Car out. He did not leave till he made sure that we are good to go.||I would recommend everyone to try Backcountry Cottage and check out the service and dedication towards customers

We just stayed at BLH for 2 nights with a group of 10. It was too short! We all wanted to stay longer! Eric & Fumie are wonderful hosts and their friends were so kind and terrific also. Their dog Hime is so sweet! ||The lodge itself is so warm, cozy, and homey feeling. We all LOVED just relaxing by the fire or hanging out in one of the several gathering spaces. The rooms are spacious, very clean, and beautifully decorated. It was so very relaxing and calming there!||The food was definitely photo worthy and oh so good! I wish we could have enjoyed more meals there and stayed longer! They went out of their way to make our visit special, and we will all remember Hakuba with smiles on our faces! :)
