"At number 43 on Ripa di Porta Ticinese, a long, canal-side street filled with luxury restaurants, a minuscule wooden bar quietly stands out. BackDoor 43, as it is known, claims to be the world’s smallest bar. Guests can book the space for one hour at a time, during which they’ll find themselves spirited away from the hustle and bustle of city life in their own private club.  The bar is just 43 square feet (4 square meters) in size, including a bathroom. There are just three stools for patrons to sit and sip upon. A key and a secret password are also required for entry. Most customers purchase their drinks through the tiny slot window, through which they can see the bartender’s hands and not much else. Secrecy is key here: If takeaway drinkers do sneak a peek through the slot, they’ll find the bartender’s face obscured by a mask. BackDoor 43 announced its grand opening not with advertisements or promotions but with secret riddles and books hidden throughout Milan. The bar uses every square inch of its closet-like space. From floor to ceiling, wooden apothecary shelves house alcohol, various herbs, flowers, and tinctures. Mugs dangle from hooks lining the walls. Betwixt the bottles are esoteric items that bring to mind a cabinet of curiosity, like diagrams of hot air balloons and antique magnifying glasses. The ceiling is papered with an old map, and the entire bar (all 13 square feet of it) feels like a secret speakeasy.   The bartender mixes on a tiny countertop complete with a camp stove. The night’s menu is tailored for the guests. Their ingredients are top shelf, with over 60 rare whiskeys alone, and drinks are served with classy, old-fashioned flair. The Bahamas is served in a retro tiki glass, while the Guatemalan Diamond comes in a gem-shaped glass served atop a pile of smoking roasted coffee beans. Whether leaving BackDoor 43 after two hours of private speakeasy relaxation or just walking away from the window with a paper cup of liquor in hand, you’re sure to be left with a lingering sense of wonder in the small things. Know Before You Go From the start of Ripa di Porta Ticinese, with the center of the city behind you, the Backdoor 43 is at the number 43, on the left side of the canal." - g greggc80, s sitetron675, massimiliano20097, Schweg, unitof, sitetron675, S Schweg, greggc80, Molly McBride Jacobson, SteReso

What a unique experience! Shame it was only for 1 hour! Jacamo was the perfect host. There’s no menu, he just creates drinks to your taste and wow, they were amazing. It’s on the pricey side but well worth it for the experience.

This was one of our favourite cocktail bar experiences! Appropriately called “the smallest bar in the world” with only four seats, we managed to get a last minute reservation the day before. The concept is perfect, essentially it’s your private bar with a top-notch bartender for an hour. Order off the menu or a bespoke cocktail crafted to your likely. The ambiance and atmosphere is old world explorer vibes, with bottles and trinkets all over the walls. The bartender was attentive and very friendly. Would highly recommend to any cocktail enthusiast!

Make reservations 2 weeks in advance. The room seats up to 4 guest, perfect for group of 2. Interior has an old world charm with a mix of explorer treasure cove and alchemist lab. The place specializes in off-the-menu cocktails and variety of scotches. Without reservation you can also order from the outside but, believe me, you will want to sit in for the experience. You got an hour to mingle with the world-class bartender to whip you tasty potions.

A great experience! Giacomo made amazing drinks based on what we like. The bar has an amazing atmosphere and a great whisky collection. Already looking forward to visiting again!

This bar is only 13 sq ft — the smallest bar in the world, as it only fits four (4) people! What’s great about the small size is that you basically have a personal bartender making whatever drinks you want and talking to you about drinks, nightlife and Milan. Highly recommend for a few drinks on your night out!

Amazing experience! Handcrafted cocktails with artistic interpretations in a cozy space. Feels like it’s been there for hundreds of years. Make a reservation to enjoy the full experience.

We had a great time at Backdoor 43 and I highly recommend it if you love cocktails and are looking for a more intimate, unique bar experience! It’s cozy and cool, and 2 guests felt like the perfect amount for the space. We chose to forgo the menu and just chat about what we like. My mom and I both enjoyed our cocktails. Be sure to chat with your knowledgeable and kind barman! Priced reasonably for the craft and quality of the drinks and experience as a whole. Don’t miss out - make a reservation!!!

A beautiful, perfect experience that is unique every time. Cocktails, expertly created on the spot to suit your mood, your favourite flavours, a story in your mind, a poem. Mixology in its refined form. Worth noting that the experience inside is vastly different to sitting outside - must pre book if you want to get in!

Yelp
The ambiance and service are impeccable as the hideout only has 3 seats available. The bartender asks about your likes and dislikes to create an elixir just for you... it's definitely worth experiencing, make a reservation.

Yelp
Came here for a nightcap when my party and I were in the area. We heard it was purportedly the world's smallest bar, so we were curious to see what that would be like. It's kind of like a speakeasy, where you knock on a door and a worker responds to you. The actual bar area was full (it can apparently only accommodate 4 customers at a time), so we opted to just get our drinks to go. They have a list of cocktails that you can order, including a secret cocktail (bartender's choice). The Paloma I had was pretty good, and we were able to drink by the canal banks, along with other patrons. A fun and unique experience to have, if you happen to be in this part of Milan.

Yelp
Coolest bar in the world no doubt. The cocktails tasted like nothing else. Would definitely recommend booking a reservation far in advance as it is very popular.

Yelp
This bar is a sham! I was looking forward to enjoying a nice cocktail on my last night in Milan and had a reservation for this bar tonight along with email confirmation that my reservation and payment had gone through. However, upon showing up, I was refused entry because the guy said he couldn't see me on the list. Even after showing him the email, he would not let me in, and even lost his temper when I asked to speak with a manager. He also refused to give me written confirmation that he would not let me in. Given that there is no contact information listed, I can't even get my money back. If that isn't a sham, what is?
