Such a cool place to dine. Wonderfully cosy and packed full of charm and history. The food portions were large and the food was faultless. Super popular local restaurant so be prepared to wait a while without a booking. Well worth the wait!

We had dinner at this beautiful restaurant. Once I stepped in, I was amazed by the ambient temperature, lighting and the setting. My German boyfriend introduced me to some traditional German food and they were super yummy. We didn't book a table and it was a Friday night. We were lucky to have a table for almost 1.5 hours and the service crew were very friendly! I will definitely come back again before I go back to Malaysia.

Google
Super! Super! Super! Could not fault the food or service. Best pork schnitzel and potato salad, and the sauerbraten was the best we have ever had. The kaiserschmarrn desert was absolutely outstanding, so big we couldn’t finish it even though we shared it.

Great german food, there is a variety of options, also for vegetarians and vegans. Great quality and fast service. A great choice in the center of Würzburg.

We found this restaurant by looking where we could have dinner as we were passing by Würzburg, would absolutely return just for the atmosphere and the wonderful soulful food. Wonderful staff and great experience!

Google
A must-visit restaurant in Würzburg. There are several halls to choose, one has glass ceiling! The atmosphere is magical - there are old lanterns, wooden furniture and small architectural details that make the place something special. The menu is absolutely cute-designed, and the variety of dishes is great. We ordered Schnitzel and Lentil stew and both dishes were delicious. It was the best lentil dish I ever had in my life. The peach tea is something you should try in this restaurant - tasty and refreshing. For the desert we had the famous Kaiserschmarrn - it's Backöfele specialty and is delicious beyond imagination. There was the perfectly baked and caramelized dough, apple slices, grapes, blueberries, 4 scoops of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate sauce on the top. I absolutely recommend visiting this great restaurant when in Würzburg!

Google
Traditional Franconian food with a warm, intimate ambiance. This was my first time having Franconian food and I enjoyed it, it was very hearty. The bread with butter was light but tasty. The potato dumplings were.. interesting, gelatinous almost and paired well with the beef gravy. The beef tenderloin was not well seasoned.

Google
American in Wurzburg for couple of days of sightseeing, went to this place because of the excellent reviews, first the pros: the atom sphere was great, very festive even at 930 at night, the main plate " pork pan" was very tasty and true to the Franconian tradition. The beers especially the Keller (unfiltered) was delicious, the waiters were all very friendly and helpful Cons - I went to a later time when it is less busy, the service was Very slow, took about 10 mins to get menu and 20 minutes to order for one person, 30 mins to get the first beer, and no one asked me if I wanted dessert so by the time I asked for the dessert menu one hour before closing, their kitchen is closed and no sweets :-(. The liver dumpling soup was bit salty, I drink and ate quite a bit there and with better customer focus I would have ordered a lot of more sweets and beer, pity

Yelp
Food, customer service, ambiance was unblemished! Drove here from Frankfurt airport with my mom on our first night in Würzburg, I made reservations a week before for 5:30, they open at 5:00, we happened to arrive a little on the early side, however, they were able to seat us around 5:10. I came across this hidden gem through reddit. This restaurant is nestled up on one of the side streets more in an alleyway. I ordered an aperol spritz as well as a full order of the Braised onion soup which had franconia onion sauce and delicious homemade potato balls *chefs kiss* my mother had the same but half the portion including the wine soup which she loved! Definitely wish I could've ordered more off the menu! The portions are very generous, loved the cozy ambiance and the unique charm this place had! As I walked out, I seen nothing but cheerful people in groups with friends/family eating and drinking, it definitely felt like more of a home Backöfele is a MUST when in Würzburg, remember to make reservations, this place fills up on the quickness and I could see why!

Yelp
Been going to Backöfele for 30+ years and it never disappoints. The very best of Franconia's cuisine in the heart of Würzburg

Yelp
Found this restaurant recommended on Yelp. We had just arrived in town, doing a two night stopover before going to Munich. Walked in with no reservation (none available online so we knew it would be packed), and planned on making reservations for the next night if they were too busy. Funny enough, the owner walked in at the same time, and he came and scooped us up and gave us a table anyways. The food is out of this world and authentic, prices fair, and our wonderful server introduced us to Franconian wine, answered any of our questions and provided an English menu. This is a once in a lifetime meal in Germany, so we will make a reservation for tomorrow night because I feel you can't really improve from the best. Bravo, thank you for having us, and being so kind and hospitable

Yelp
Excellent food and plenty of it. Crispy Pork Knuckle was off the chain! Good service and we were seated without a reservation but probably should have had one. We really enjoyed the ambiance of this place too. A wonderful experience.

Yelp
The food and the service were top notch. The only complaint I have is that a specific wine they had on the menu they had run out of. The authentic Franconia food was to die for. Our waiter was fun, accommodating and very attentive. All around a very fun experience.

Yelp
This was our "go to restaurant" 20 years ago and on a recent trip found it just as wonderful. Amazing atmosphere, excellent food (English menus provided) and reasonable prices. The "must go to" restaurant in Würzburg - make sure you make a reservation and order that special dessert!

Virgil James K.

Yelp
I have my favorites in the world, but time and circumstance have dusted some of them. But Bakofele is worth the day trip if you are stopping over in Frankfurt. Go to Wurzburg and eat at one of the absolute best restaurants on the planet. Stay and enjoy one of the cutest German cites. A city perfect for walking and biking. Are you global citizen, trust me this hard to find out of the way old restaurant is a must eat. This is not just German food, this is the finest most consistent restaurant in the world.

Yelp
Tonight was our last night in Würzburg. Our son wanted authentic German food. OH BOY did Backöfele deliver. We were staying only a block away and figures we would give it a try after reading the reviews. We were able to get a reservation at the last minute. Our 2 hour dinner couldn't have been more perfect; the food, the service, the atmosphere - superior!!!! I HIGHLY recommend this place. It's kinda hidden back away from everything but absolutely worth tracking down.

Yelp
I'm an American and have been living in Germany for the past year almost. I have tried many different German restaurants and this one is definitely in my top 3! Service: Excellent. The owner and staff speak English very well and are extremely nice and accommodating. Definitely make a reservation if you'd like a table for lunch or dinner, as it fills up fast. Food: I ordered the Fränkisches Schweineschäufele mit Dunkelbiersoße, Kartoffelklößen und Sauerkraut. Translated is pork with dark beer sauce, potato dumplings, and sauerkraut. The potato dumplings are delicious, so any dish with these is amazing. I would substitute the sauerkraut for blaukraut (blue kraut) though, it's a little bit sweeter and tastes delicious with the dumplings. The pork was delicious as well. Atmosphere: Traditional decorations with staff in lederhosen, dark rooms with candles lit everywhere, and it feels very authentic. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone I meet that hasn't had the genuine German dining experience.

Yelp
Great find that's hard to find. Basically out the back of our hotel, down an alley. Very crowded but they found a table for us to eat. Especially liked pork roast and fried potatoes. Our waiter was very helpful.

Yelp
I just can't say how much i loved the food, the vibes, the waiters, the decorations, the warms. This place is great, full of locals, full of love, full of enthusiasm. I got the mixed grill and potato salad. It was phenomenal. Highly recommend

Yelp
Found this restaurant after a long day of travel based on yelp (yay, right?!). First thing's first: food was awesome. If you're looking for an authentic German restaurant you found it! The staff spoke minimal English but enough for us to order food and drinks. We ordered Viena Schnitzel, Pork Schnitzel and Cordon Bleu. all were hot and fresh-tasting and VERY good. Portions were large! The service was very warm and friendly, but they were busy and so it took us awhile to get a few basic things, but it was well worth it. If you're looking for a quality meal, GO HERE! --a small note, it seems after 8pm, it is reservations only?

Richard W.

Yelp
Ate here after a day wandering the Christmas Market. We tried the duck breast, schnitzel, pan fried potatoes and chestnut soup. All were very delicious! The portion sizes were massive, and we took the rest home. Service was great, even when compared to what you get in the states. We would return for sure.

Yelp
Minus one star because our food took forever to come out. Think they were understaffed in the kitchen that day. We were there for a late lunch. Other than that, it was a great experience. They specialize in Franconian food, and I haven't had much Franconian food before, so reading the menu was a bit of a struggle as some things weren't easily found in a German dictionary. Service was great--our waitress was really nice and patient as I translated some stuff for my friend and her mom. I also asked her for recommendations off the menu and wound up ordering what she said was her fave dish, the Fleischküchle. The best way I can explain this dish is that it was like a burger patty in a creamy but not too creamy leek and onion sauce. It tasted like a pot pie without the pastry crust. It was delicious and came with a side of bratkartoffeln, pan-fried potatoes. For dessert, we shared the Kaiserschmarnn, which was AMAZING. It was...pan-fried pancakes with perfectly crisped edges and topped with berries, two scoops of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and powdered sugar. Total calorie and carb bomb, but worth every bite, and I couldn't slouch after this meal, I was so full. The decor is cozy and cute. Everything is wood, the walls, the chairs, the tables. I'm definitely going back here next time I'm in Würzburg. Really loved the place and highly recommend it.

Yelp
Rounds up to a 4 because I like the atmosphere. Comprehensive traditional menu, with additional menu featuring game when I visited. Thankfully, they also offer an English menu, but that's because this place is a bit touristy. Adorable atmosphere, with a tree on the lower level. The seating area goes a ways back, and the restaurant is larger than it looks. Dim lighting presents a cozy atmosphere. The food is good, but nothing outstanding. The portions are decent, and the prices are moderate.

Yelp
Great place to eat when visiting Würzburg with a very friendly staff. I would definitely return. The rouladen and wine were delicious.

Lara V.

Yelp
Amazing! I visited this place on my trip to Germany. The ambiance is really nice omg. And the food is really delicious!!! Our sever even brought us English menus and are very nice :-) I give this place 5 stars

Fred D.

Yelp
Food was classic Bavarian fare and didn't disappoint. The service was pretty bad. Server was inattentive and nearly nonexistent. I spilled my beer and they didn't offer to replace or even ask if I wanted another. I would probably not go back for that reason. Can get food as good or better with better service.

Yelp
I was taken here by some locals. It is an impressive place, the surroundings, atmosphere, service...all breathtaking. The cuisine is 'Frankische' style. I would recommend ordering from the 'Wildkarte; (Game) I had chestnut soup with cognac to start Leinachter Wildschwein (Wild Boar slow cooked) for main and the amaziing 'Backofele Kaiserschmarrn' for dessert. (2 people min), it is a type of thick pancake served with berries and icecream. I can safely say that this was the most amazing meal that I have had for some time. Washed down with some Juliusspital Riesling. Possibly tasting even better as it was 'Corporate Hospitality' and did not cost a thing. You would have to search for a long time before you found anything to match this in the UK. Main around 20 euros, starters and desserts around 10 euros English menus available, english spoken (as usual they are far better educated than we are)

Nico Xin Z.

Yelp
The decor is amazing and breathtaking! Can't be more romantic! Riesling champagne is brilliant. Fränkische mostsuppe (soup with wine in it) taste very special. Def recommend the soup.

Yelp
Excellent place for local cuisine. Really typical décoration and atmosphere. Large choice of local wines to go with the food. The food is delicious, and in huge quantity, don't be afraid the price is worth it. We had the pork shoulder and the house marinated beef, we highly recommend this two, it was incredibly good and huge.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Great ambience, efficient service, generous portion. Love their generous serving of wines!

Patrick R.

Yelp
Overall lacking in both flavor and ambience. Coming from America we were expecting something truly amazing and authentic, but instead got a meal that was both bland and fake. To start we had the house Kellerweisse and pilsner which were poor representations of both styles, but maybe the wines would have been a better choice given the region. Then we had the schnitzel which was under seasoned and beef tenderloin which was dry and the red cabbage was heavy handed with cinnamon. Overall, there is much more authentic German food sprawling about Wurzburg, and we would suggest trying somewhere else.
