My 4 Favorite Hostels in Boston (Updated 2025)

"Located about 20 minutes outside Boston in Everett by Wellington station, Backpackers Hostel & Pub is well-run and newly renovated with good public transport links and a free shuttle to/from Wellington. It has a lively social atmosphere centered around a small on-site pub and pool table area, and sits near the craft beer district with breweries, a cannabis dispenser, and a food truck area. Rooms come with bathrooms and kitchenettes, the beds are simple wire frames but comfortable, male/female/mixed dorms are available, and free breakfast is included." - Matthew Kepnes

Incredible experience!!! The negative reviews on this business are ABSOLUTELY wrong. I’ve stayed in hostels from New York to New Delhi and this is, hands down, one of the best I’ve ever seen. After staying here I’m convinced the sub-par reviews are generated from people that never actually visited this hostel, I don’t see any other explanation. Easily the nicest, most accommodating people I’ve stayed with in years, everything is clean, and incredibly interesting wall art—especially if you’re a Beatles fan! I can’t recommend this place enough, I won’t stay anywhere else next time I’m in Boston.

Was great! And I managed to phone them before I went which I love!!|The staff were friendly, I felt safe on my own and I could easily leave my bag there. Super simple breakfast with coffee tea and toast - all I needed. Plus between 8am and 4pm there’s a guy called Steve that can give you a lift to Chelsea train station if you need it. Easy to get to Salem. ||It’s an old school Hostel - just how they should be ||I worked it out but make sure you leave in good time to get to the airport if you need to - cause Everett is just on the outside of Boston ||Thanks. Was great!

Cool little hostel, with music vibe in its decor. It's just outside center of boston, but everything is easily accessible ( I had a car, but public transit is not too far, and they do provide a shuttle from what I saw in the mornings) Property is well maintained and clean environment. Staff is excellent, friendly, and very accommodating. The parking lot is a big bonus in my opinion. Although it's small, I've not had issue getting a spot when I visited.|Breakfast is simple - toast with butter and jelly, just enough to get you going...|For the price, this is a great spot for spending a weekend in Boston

We booked a private room. It had one double bed, tv, microwave, refrigerator, private bathroom inside the room with tub/shower combo. The room looked recently updated. Everything looked new, freshly painted, clean and a comfortable bed. Was it the Ritz? No, but for under $200 and 10 minutes from the city, it was perfect. All the staff were polite and friendly. I'll definitely stay again next time we need to go to Boston. Tip: Book directly from their website for a better rate than the travel websites, plus all the $ goes directly to the Hotel.

I don't know how this place is in business or has so many positive reviews, especially from women. I should have just slept at the airport. First of all, its not even in Boston and the neighborhood feels kind of sketchy. I booked through hostel world because i don't know any better, and the owner insisted they didn't have my reservation and that hostel world is a scam. He charged me the full $70 (stated $60 on the website, which i found out later) and proceeded to chat me up in a very uncomfortable manner. Room was okay, some garbage under the bed, but nice to have a bathroom and "kitchenette" inside the room. I tried to make the most of my time and take a walk around the area, but it's just a neighbourhood with some underwhelming restaurants and bars. Came back to maybe sit in the common area and do some work on my computer, but got some really bad vibes from a dude in there and thought better of it. Owner tried to rope me into a conversation several times but i finally managed to escape to my room, where the only other girl inside was asleep before 9pm (not shaming her, just didn't feel comfortable turning on lights or anything). The AC was extremely loud, which i guess was a bit of a blessing to drown out the horns honking and other loud ruckus from the street right outside. I can't say i felt completely unsafe, but certainly uncomfortable. Sleep poorly on the uncomfortable, squeaky mattress, and when i got up to leave in the morning there was a dude passed out in the common area. Nothing terrible happened, I just got overcharged by 10-20$, but I'm kicking myself for not doing better research and spending another 30$ for HI hostel. Traveller beware. PS, best of luck to new guy James, hope the job is better than it looks.

During my visit to Boston for a conference, I chose to stay at Backpackers Hostel in Everett, Massachusetts. Its excellent proximity to transportation services made it easy for me to travel to the inner city of Boston and other distant locations. The rooms and toilet facilities were clean and well-maintained, creating a comfortable and pleasant environment. The internet was consistently strong and reliable, allowing me to stay connected throughout my stay. Breakfast was provided, although it differed from the traditional breakfast one might have at home. For any additional or special services, guests could request them at an extra cost. The staff at Backpackers Hostel were exceptionally friendly and courteous. On my last day, I found myself in a stressful situation—just 40 minutes away from missing my flight back to Germany. I lacked a U.S. phone number to book a taxi or Uber, but Michelle, a staff member, went above and beyond to help me. She quickly organized an Uber, ensuring I made it to the airport on time. Her support was invaluable, and I’m deeply grateful for her assistance. Everett itself is a charming town with a beautiful landscape, adding to the overall experience. I wholeheartedly recommend Backpackers Hostel to any traveler visiting Boston. It offers convenience, comfort, and exceptional service at an affordable price. Whenever I return to Boston, Backpackers will undoubtedly be my place of choice.

I stayed here for 2 nights to go see a concert at TD garden and had a very pleasant experience. The location is great and the rooms are well equipped with everything you may need. I’ve stayed in several hostels before and never had access to an in-room fridge like I did here. The front desk is so sweet! I accidentally forgot a very special poster from the concert I had been to and they were kind enough to retrieve it from my room and hold onto it until a friend could pick it up for me. My only tip would be to consider bringing your own towel as the ones provided are smaller than I preferred. Besides that, I would recommend staying here to anyone.

Simple and comfortable hostel, outside of Boston but with a good location and very affordable for those who don't want to stay for many days. Breakfast is included, but it's just toast, jam, peanut butter, butter and coffee (delicious though). Attentive and kind staff. The only locker in the room is really small (it didn't fit my backpack).
