On the Grid : Badhuis

"The Bath House on Javaplein opened in 1942 her doors and was on of the last public baths built in Amsterdam. It quickly became a central meeting place for local residents. In the 70s, the number of users quickly declined, as more and more people got their own showers at home. Right behind the bar you can still see were previously the shower cubicles for the ladies were. In 1982 the Bath House closed its doors and forever lost its function as a bathhouse. After closing the Bathhouse did function as a Hindu temple and a charity store, before it turned into a horeca location in the early 90s. After many changes of ownership and name, the Bath House now has its old name back, and even its original function as a central meeting place for the locals. Drop by for a nice cup of coffee, high tea, lunch or dinner and spot the old details that still reminds us of the previous function of this place." - All Essentials

Sushi Noord pop-up: Had an incredible omakase experience with the chef from Sushi Noord at his pop-up in Badhuis tonight. You can really tell how passionate he is, the little stories he shared made it all feel so personal. The sushi was honestly the best I’ve ever had. Such a memorable night, and having never tried Sushi Noord before this will definitely make me a regular there 😊

A Hidden Culinary Treasure: Badhuis Omakase x Sushi Noord Tucked away in the atmospheric charm of Amsterdam-Noord, Badhuis Omakase x Sushi Noord offers a truly intimate and sensory dining experience that lingers in your memory long after the last piece is savored. If you’ve ever wondered what sushi was meant to taste like—fresh, honest, and unpretentiously perfect—this is where you’ll find your answer. From the moment you step inside, you’re welcomed not just by the warmth of the minimal yet inviting space, but by the chef’s quiet confidence behind the bar. This isn’t just dinner; it’s an invitation to slow down, watch, and appreciate craftsmanship in its purest form. The omakase offering consists of 10 pieces, each a unique expression of seasonality, technique, and respect for the fish. Served one by one, directly from the chef’s hand to yours, there’s something deeply personal and grounding about eating this way. No chopsticks, no fuss—just you and the moment. Let’s talk about the fish. Every piece tells its own story: • A buttery slice of otoro melts on your tongue with a whisper of soy. • The mackerel, aged to perfection, is bold yet clean, followed by a refreshing kiss of citrus. • Scallop, sweet and delicate, is paired with just enough yuzu zest to brighten it like a secret. • A piece of smoked eel, warm and luxurious, balances rich umami with a caramelized edge. There’s no rush. With each bite, the chef gives you space to breathe, sip, and savor. And speaking of sipping: the sake pairing is not an afterthought—it’s essential. Each glass is carefully selected to match the flavor profile of the fish you’re tasting. From soft and floral to crisp and dry, the sake elevates the experience without overpowering it. It creates a subtle rhythm between dishes, enhancing the meal without stealing the spotlight. The magic of Badhuis Omakase is in its simplicity. It doesn’t try too hard—it doesn’t have to. The ingredients are respected, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the service feels like a quiet conversation between you and the chef. This is not a place where you come just to eat; it’s where you come to experience. Perfect for a special evening or a refined solo moment, this 10-piece journey is a must for true sushi lovers or anyone curious to taste the real thing, far away from soy-drenched rolls and fusion experiments. If you’ve been looking for something that feels personal, grounded, and absolutely unforgettable, Badhuis Omakase x Sushi Noord is calling your name.

We just had such a great time at a lively street party Pride Oost, and one of the highlights was discovering BadHuis a fantastic bar that really stands out for all the right reasons. It has a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere and is open to everyone, which adds to the inclusive and friendly vibe. One thing that truly impressed us was how clean and well-organized everything was. The gender-neutral bathrooms were spotless, thoughtfully maintained, and a perfect example of how a public venue can be both inclusive and hygienic. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference. On top of that, the staff were incredibly kind and helpful, attentive without being overbearing, and always ready with a smile. It’s clear that they care about creating a great experience for everyone who walks in. Bud House is definitely a place worth revisiting. Whether you’re just passing by during a street party or planning a night out, it’s a gem of a spot that gets everything right.

We went on a Saturday evening and got to sit right away. Food and drinks were pretty good, but maybe priced a little high for this neighborhood. It was quite loud on the patio and the heaters were on even in the summer heat. We waited quite some time to get our check and then were given incorrect change, but the service otherwise was good- prompt and friendly.

Google
Very nice and spacious restaurant, but you can also sit down enjoy your drinks solo. Even in the cold weather, there are seatings outside with heating on. Friendly, warm staff. Thank you

Google
an average experience even though the location is good. Tea was semi warm and they put so much mint in it that the water quantity was very little and food took too long to arrive, even though it wasn't busy. Burger had too much sause, had to remove half of it and it was very small portion for 15 euros.

Wont recommend at all! ❌ We had a very unpleasant situation with a staff member called Dennis. He was one of the bouncers working at the door on Friday night, 14th November, around midnight. He escalated a situation that was overall very simple to deal with. Mistreated us, talked with apprehension and made us feel very unwelcome. It was a very bittersweet end that ruined the entire experience. One thing is being busy on a Friday night and not being able to give the most personalize service (which we felt from the staff in general), something else is using a bad tone and escalating a situation for no reason. Wouldn’t come back. For the future, I choose more wisely your bouncers or keep them out of contact with guests if they often approach people like this. Won’t come back. Very disappointing and not worth it.

We had a nice dinner here on a Saturday night in Amsterdam. The food was really good. Fresh and original dishes. The atmosphere was good. We sat on the terrace which was nice to be outside but only downside was to it’s near the road so traffic going past and people smoking around you too.

Yelp
Note: This is solely for drinks. This place is cray inside. It's an old bathhouse and the set up of the building reflects that. What I love about it is there are all sorts of options for where you can choose to sit. Outside, to the left, upstairs, to the right...find yourself a nice little corner somewhere and just hang. In the summer they have loads of tables outside and it's a really fun place to enjoy the sunshine with a cold drink and watch the day go by. Definitely one of my safe hangs in my neighborhood.

Yelp
Great seating area outside. Staff always up for a conversation. Great and affordable choice of local Dutch beers. Facilities clean. Tables cleaned regularly. Accepts card and cash. I'd definitely recommend this spot in the Zeeburg District.

Yelp
We had a private party upstairs. Highly recommended. And that's all I have to say about it.

Yelp
With the outdoor benches, this is a great place for a quick lunch or to sit around and enjoy weather. Granted, there isn't much people watching as the area is not very busy. I would recommend the open face sandwich with steak tartar, hard boiled egg, chives, and cornichon. The food is not cheap, but Amsterdam in general is not.

Yelp
As someone who lives around the corner, the Badhuis is a lovely spot to have as a backyard. It's a great space with a large partio and cool decor, perfect for grabbing a drink. I went here to do some work and was happy to discover the free wifi. I was not, however, impressed by the food. The spinach and melted brie salad was good, but €8.50 for a small serving is not worth it. I also found the service to be rushed and not particularly warm, but they were all right. Definitely a spot to bring friends or to grab a drink solo, but pass on the food. That said, I look forward to another sunny day to sit outside and enjoy the patio.

Yelp
We come here often. Nice lunches, nice for no nonsense good diner too. Great no thrills but still nice food. Really cool venue! Nice staff. Fantastic terrace. And they have a fireplace! One of our favorites.

Yelp
Unlike a previous reviewer wrote, this place is NOT only for drinks. They also serve food. I would not place them in the category "French" though. More general.

Yelp
Absolutely best unknown sunshine terrace of the city! Nice food and a great variety of drinks and beers. Personel is absolutely amazing, but to frequent to less personel so take your time... Otherwise absolutely 5 stars...

Yelp
Very nice service, and good beers on tap (including Urquell, one of my favorites). For food, I had a burger, which tasted previously frozen (as did the frites), and my partner had a sandwich with avocado & boiled egg, which he quite liked.

Yelp
Nice relaxed atmosphere, friendly waiter, good music (some relaxed 60s and 70s stuff). Food was quite good, prices are not cheap, but Ok. Try the fresh fruit juices.

Yelp
Public bath in the past and a gathering place for the locals, now a relaxed cafe/restaurant (in A'dam East, in the "indies neighborhood"). Especially nice is the terrace on a sunny afternoon. We were at the vintage market in the neighborhood (at Javaplein) and then decided to refresh with smoothies at Badhuis. The smoothie of the day - beetroot&celery was very attempting, but unfortunately they didn't have anymore left...so we ordered banana smoothies - were just ok, nothing special. I liked their white house wine and the glasses it was served. We wanted to order food as well, but it was around 5, bad timing - too late for lunch and dinner was not served yet, only borrels - fried snacks, so we skipped food. The service was ok, by accident one of the waitresses spilled white wine on a customer but she handled it well;he accepted her friendly honest apologize and the guy even got a badhuis t-shirt as a gift. Nice escape from the busy, touristic center!

Yelp
Nice converted bathhouse! This is comforting food nothing extraordinary; burger was way too cooked - a rarity in holland - but the fries were PERFECT ! Would not cross the city to return, but worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood and hungry or thirsty or both

Yelp
We nearly missed this place as we'd used Yelp to look for a cafe for an afternoon drink and snack. The "bath house" did not show up as it is listed as a French Restaurant but when our first option washed out (sic) because of an opening times mixup with Yelp we were back tracking and came across Badhuis - it looked very welcoming and there were lots of people outside enjoying the sun so we decided to stop in and were glad that we did so. First the service. The young lady running around serving the large number of customers was welcoming, spent time with us without feeling rushed but was patently doing an amazing job of keeping dozens of customers happy. In all the time we were there she never seemed to drop the ball, was always responsive to any requests that we had and was everything you could have asked for of a server - even checking in as she passed to make sure all was OK. From a food and drink perspective we had beers (she ensured that we selected the right size as some of the standard Dutch options are a bit tiny for us Brits!) and a couple of the very good sandwich options. The tuna melt focaccia with (nicely spicy) jalapeno mayo was very good as was the carpaccio sandwich combo. We also added a side order of fries which were great but no way could we finish them all. An unexpected treat. Great service, very good food (good value) and excellent surroundings sitting watching the world go by. Delightfully grump free and well deserving 5 stars!

Yelp
Great place with tasty food and a cozy ambience. It's especially nice to sit by the fireplace they have inside. It's very welcoming and can have you sitting there for hours chatting with your friends or even reading a book or working on your own.

Yelp
Decent food and quite a nice atmosphere, but laughably rude service even for Holland (at least if you don't speak Dutch). Would probably recommend it more for a summer lunch than a dinner date.
