"Bagaduce Lunch, located on the Blue Hill Peninsula in Penobscot, Maine, is a classic seafood spot offering fried clams, lobster rolls, french fries, and coleslaw. Established in 1946, it has maintained a traditional menu and is perched above the tidal narrows next to the Bagaduce River." - Peter Kaminsky

"In Penobscot, on the Blue Hill Peninsula, I fell in love with the roll at Bagaduce Lunch. Some come for the ever-changing soft-serve swoops, but I’m a fan of the no-fuss sando, which costs under $20 and offers everything you need: a view of the water from a picnic table, mayo-dressed lobster, and chunks big enough to chew." - Hannah Selinger

Lovely shack by the tidal river. These people really know how to fry stuff! Belly clams and scallops are fantastic. Crab rolls are terrific. And there are plenty of items for folks who don’t want seafood. Some day I’ll leave room for ice cream.

This place is a hidden gem!! Worth the drive from Trenton, ME!! The food was so good! The combo platter was more than enough for 2 people to share! Lobster roll was perfect! Burgers are real, not frozen patties! Onion rings sliced thin and battered to perfection! Would visit here everytime I am in the area!

Google
Great spot for takeout if you are not in a hurry. Usually a wait in line then a wait for your order (45 mins to an hour the times we went) but they let you know before ordering. Also numbers called are in random sequence so don’t worry if you have a number and they call one way off. Food is so good and worth it! Be aware the speaker that they call your order number is extremely loud it echoes. Best to just wait by the water and not by the building. ;) Best crinkle cut fries I’ve ever had. Huge portion fish. Their ice cream looks so good. We will definitely be back !

This little family owned place was a great stop for lunch. They have a large selection of different types of food and of course a lot of seafood options. You order and pick up your food at a window and can take it down to one of the numerous picnic tables to eat by the lake. There is an outhouse to use if you need a restroom. The people are super nice. Prices are reasonable for being in season. I had a Haddock sandwich and onion rings. Both were fabulous! Definitely the best onion rings I've ever had! I would go here again.

My grandpa used to take me here when I was a kid, and we continued the tradition on off every other summer or until he passed in my twenties. We’d get the fried scallops every time, and so I still either get those, or a Rueben or even a haddock burger depending on the mood I’m in! The last few summers (2023/2024) their soft serve game has been EXCEPTIONAL. All of the flavors have been delicious and well done. Between the sweet stuff and the savory, it’s the perfect place for a lunch with an incredible view. IT GETS HELLA CROWDED IN THE SUMMER, do not show up a half hour before they’re closed. Honestly? Show up no less than an hour before they close.

This is a nice place for a good lunch at a great price. You eat outside at picnic tables. The service is quick. Portions are great. The haddock sandwich is one of the best I’ve ever had. Definitely the place to go if you need lunch and are in the area and don’t want a something fancy.

Update....another great lunch in a beautiful setting. There is plenty of parking and great service. Ordered another haddock reuben, which is still not on the menu (but should be). One of the best I have ever had, and haddock reuben is my go-to item. Maybe if enough people ask, they will put it on the menu. Then again, I like the fact that they make them just for me!! _____________________________ Really nice lunch spot. Great food, good portions, and you can sit at a picnic table by the river. We had the haddock basket, which included two filets and fries...and a haddock reuben, which was not on the menu, but they offered to make me one. All the food was delicious. We will be back!

Amazing food! Absolutely amazing spot! Beautiful Outlook of the bay. Super friendly people are what make it 😊

Yelp
What a lovely experience. We had a great big fish sandwich, which was big enough for two servings. Tender, flaky and fried to perfection. The tartar sauce was totally unnecessary but really tasty. You sit in your car and wait for them to call your number, which is quite alright--the scenery is spectacular. It has a limited season, but that is what makes it so much fun. There are picnic tables around or you can sit in the car--always nice with minimal A/C. I recommend this place highly.

Jane C.

Yelp
Best fried haddock sandwich ever, hands down. Onion rings made with the good batter, not too thick and no cornmeal crumbs. I don't usually eat soft serve, but the pistachio with chocolate sprinkles was amazing. I got the "baby"" size that wasn't advertised on the board, it was big enough! If you're lucky, you might see some kids jumping into the reversing falls!

Jessica K.

Yelp
Great lobster rolls, if mayo-y. Dad liked the Reuben, a nice option for the non-lobster-lover. Lots of great tables to choose from & nice views! Dog friendly.

Gules R.

Yelp
Hidden gem! Great views and quick and pleasant service. Some of the best lobster rolls we had in Maine and my mom said the best Rueben she's had in her life! We loved the outdoor picnic tables.

David N.

Yelp
It's always a fun tradition to visit the Bagaduce Lunch in Brooksville. It's a typical roadside takeout food joint with all the lovely offerings you'd expect. Fried clams and calamari are yummy for sure! Nothing exceptional, but nothing bad either. Great location and good food (in moderation)!

Abbie w.

Yelp
After stumbling across a Facebook post, we decided to go about 35 minutes out of our way for their soft serve ice cream. It was worth it! It's a hidden gem that's out of the way of everything, so we didn't find it to be too "tourist-y" like some reviews may suggest. They only offer their "special flavor", vanilla, or both of them in a twist. The flavor today was red raspberry so we got a raspberry and twist cone. Delicious and the service was also friendly! We had a bit of a wait but the line moved fast. Seating was nice as well.

William W.

Yelp
If you're traipsing through Maine and have a hankering for fried food, Bagaduce is definitely a worthwhile stop. This lakeside spot with picnic tables is an ideal place to eat after ordering at the walk-up window. The employees are very friendly and patient while you decide on your order, and the fried seafood offerings are quite extensive. Some sites rank Bagaduce Lunch as the best place to eat fried clams in all of Maine. That wasn't our opinion, but they were undoubtedly delicious with a fabulously crunchy batter. Unfortunately, some clams were too chewy to be edible, and they didn't measure up to the fried clams at Helen's in Machias, Maine. But they were nonetheless scrumptious. The fried onions are also good, heavy on the stomach but sliced impossibly thin with a rich, crisp batter that you can't stop eating! It was definitely a good lunch!

Kathy E.

Yelp
Try the soft serve! Pistachio and vanilla were delicious. There are plenty of picnic tables to enjoy the reverse falls. What's that you say? The direction of the river flow changes every 6 hours! Ask the lady in the window about it! She was really nice and nonchalant about it but it's really a miracle of science that happens right outside her window!

Ana R.

Yelp
Everything on the menu is good. I sometimes order 3 items for myself - a lobster roll, the fried haddock & the fried belly clams. So delicious! I can eat here everyday of my vacation!

Thomas J.

Yelp
My wife and I have eaten fried clams all over Maine. We think these are one of the best, and the onion rings are the best we have had. They have a beautiful picnic area overlooking a bay. It was a long drive to get there, and not inexpensive but worth it.

S H.

Yelp
The first time we ate here, in 2017, fried haddock sandwich and whole belly fried clams basket with fries, we knew we had found a treasure. Add the beautiful location on the reverse tidal falls and what could possibly be better? Fast forward to 2022...what a difference 5 years makes!! Holy moly! Ordered our usual, fried haddock sandwich and whole belly fried clams basket with fries. Although the sandwich was still reasonably priced @ $11, however, the clams were listed as "Market Price". The amount of clams in the basket was much less than previous years. We ordered nothing else. No beverages. No sides. The total was $41... Sad to see this once wonderful out of the way treasure seems to have lost its edge. Even with the ridiculous rules, inconsistencies, lack of adequate parking and unfriendly staff, the food was so good we chalked it up as part of the unique, albeit a bit odd, experience. Not sure how much longer people, local or tourists, will want to continue patronizing this place.

Ray W.

Yelp
I must say I agree with the reviewer below who found the staff unfriendly and apparently unhappy to be there. They were quite curt. Worse, they ruined some perfectly fresh scallops. There were several tablespoons of brown oil at the bottom of the paper basket. I squeezed the oil out of a few, but had to leave most of them. Long wait time, long lines. Very disappointing and sad to make this note.

Rae S.

Yelp
If you're looking for eat in the rough Maine edition - this is your place to go! Lobster rolls, friend clams, fried pickles, onion rings and French fries. YUM! The seafood is obviously the spotlight, but the skinny onion rings were a real winner. The place overlooks the Bagaduce River, plenty of parking, and open only for a season. Don't miss out if you're heading this way!

Glen M.

Yelp
The star is their onion rings! The lobster roll is average at best. Fried shrimp basket was over flowing and very good. Fries were good also. The picnic area is very nice with a great view of the water and activity. Dog friendly!

Jean M.

Yelp
Really sorry to report this perfectly located, scenic seasonal take-out isn't what it used to be. Mean staff - which was really a surprise. None of the really special desserts they used to have. I'm as local as they come, and I would have returned and brought visitors to show off their great place, but now I'm gone for good. If you really hate the tourist industry, that's OK, but please don't work in it. It's horrible for everyone - yourself included.

Andrew C.

Yelp
The best darn Maine lobster shack that there is. Ain't none better. First of all, there is the killer view which makes most any meal 10x better. And if you get there at the right time you will see either a hundred horseshoe crab mating or be witness to the reversing roaring waters of tidal Maine. Anyhow, everything here is delicious and perfectly fried. Come for the haddock, as it is fresh, fried well, and just tasty. The prices are fair across the board. The fried whole bellies are the best for miles. If hungry for ice cream, they have Gifford's but are best known for their delightful and imaginative soft serve. Cannot go wrong with their Pistachio soft serve...or any of their soft serve. I love all of their flavors.

William B.

Yelp
Motorcycle unfriendly! I parked at the only safe asphalt area, not blocking the road, parking lot entrance, nor patron entrance when this witch hollers at me "you can't park there!" I guess I was supposed to slide my thousand pound Harley down the gravel sloped excuse for a parking lot. I don't know if the food was worth it, I don't patronize biker unfriendly establishments. But from the looks of the tourists in line, not noticing anyone who looked local, I assume I didn't miss anything!

Carrie M.

Yelp
This is my golf buddy's death row meal. We eat here at least 6 times on vacation. Not one crab roll I've ever had anywhere else compares to this crab roll. It is perfection itself. Buttery grilled bun, just the slightest seasoning and touch of mayonnaise, hand cut fries, batter dipped onion rings. The atmosphere is delightful looking out over the bagaduce river. Best ever place.

Yelp
If I could give no stars to this restaurant, I would - not because of their food, which is good, but because of their HORRIBLE attitude in regards to customer service. Last year, my husband and I phoned in an order - early on in the pandemic - wanting to support a local business. We had driven for an hour to get there, having enjoyed their food in the past. The person who answered the phone asked an unusual question: "Where are you going to eat?" I said we would pull around behind the restaurant, as usual, to sit by the water. We were then informed that (because we were SMART enough to phone in our order to avoid the inevitable line - my words, not theirs), we were NOT WELCOME TO EAT THE FOOD I HAD PAID THEM FOR ON THEIR OWN PROPERTY, but would be expected to get our food and VACATE THE PREMISES, as if we had STOLEN IT FROM THEM and needed to SKULK AWAY like THIEVES. We were informed, in no uncertain terms, that we were NOT ALLOWED to eat our food there. And when we arrived, there was NO LINE AT ALL. Needless to say, we will NEVER eat there again - EVER. I have rarely been so INSULTED in my LIFE.

Sara N.

Yelp
Great food, haddock sandwich is huge and so good!Prepare to stand in line though, very busy place! Right on the water, lots of place/tables and all of them have a nice view:)

Dale F.

Yelp
Very nice set up...picnic tables and water views..My haddock was superb and my wife's was also. She loved the Pistachio Cone to top it off. I had to buy a t shirt too! Highly recommend

Tim B.

Yelp
Easily the worst lobster roll I've ever had. Their large, is most places's small. WAY to much mayo! The portion of fried clams was super small for the price. Fish and chips (haddock) was fairly good, and a decent portion. Grumpy staff made it memorable I am giving it two stars, because the location is nice (and the fried haddock was pretty good). Just wondering why the umbrellas in the picnic area are so tiny? Can't imagine they're much a help with creating shade.

Julie W.

Yelp
My best friend got COVID and said it was the scariest thing she's ever gone through. So I am super grateful to Bagaduce Lunch for all they're doing to keep people safe while still turning out summer treats. Fish and chips under a shady tree followed by ice cream. Bless you!

Diane H.

Yelp
Based on reviews, we drive here from Brooklin for lunch and it was okay. Two small lobster rolls and a grilled chicken sandwich were ordered. While waiting we walked down and grabbed a picnic table with a fabulous view of the river, just passed the falls. 5 Stars for the location and view for a fast food seafood joint. My guests eat lobster roll every day while in Maine and these got an "ok" but our other stops this week we're better. The grilled chicken sandwich was very good with the right balance of mayo on the buns. Side orders of French fries and onion rings were also ordered and both were hot and good. Ice cream choices for soft serve was very limited, vanilla and banana so we opted to go to Surry for ice cream. If you are up that way, it's worth a stop, but probably not worth the 20 minutes we went out of our way to get there.

Kelsey C.

Yelp
This is one of those places that you don't want to write about because it's so precious you can't bear to share the secret with anyone else. But you also don't want it to go out of business, so, there you go. Such a classic, perfect Maine experience it almost hurts. We got a tip from our campground host, a local. Super simple and straightforward burger and seafood shack by the river, with a dirt parking lot. Amazing setting, nostalgic food, perfect dining experience. We were sad we had already eaten when we got here - the fried haddock sandwiches with fries seemed to be the top-ticket item. Fried chicken sandwiches looked killer as well. We settled for our vanilla milkshake and ice cream cones which were still pretty awesome. Plenty of tables are out on the back lawn facing the river. We loved people watching - multi-generation families, construction workers coming straight from work, young families with kids. Always a line but it moves fast, cash or credit, no bathrooms (just a porta-potty by the parking lot). Skip the hyped-up restaurants - this is our new favorite place in the area. So lovely.

Irish O.

Yelp
Got there about 1PM. Lots of people however didn't take long, maybe 15 minutes to get my order. I ordered a side of scallops and side of cole slaw. The side of scallops was more than I expected compared to other take outs.. great value. In regards to Covid-19, they did have picnic tables that you can use throughout the property. Many right by the water but spread out.. They don't want you waiting up by the takeout/order area but they will call out your order number to pick up.

Tate Y.

Yelp
Great summer spot. A must stop if you're looking for some classic, Maine fried seafood. Nice views too

Briggid L.

Yelp
Places on the side of road in this area are everywhere never know which one will be the one well this is the one. great location and great food. Got the shrimp basket they were fried perfectly and they are the small shrimp lots of shrimp enough to split with my husband and great crinkle cut fries. and did I tell you about the ice cream yum

Mally L.

Yelp
Had a great lunch here during a visit to Maine. My wife got the clams which she said were the best she's ever had. I had a cheeseburger with onion rings and their homemade lemonade. Everything was delicious!

James D.

Yelp
Great place to eat any time of the day. Food is awesome. The clams are perfectly cooked. And the haddock sandwich is very good. Onion rings to die for.

Mary W.

Yelp
The reason we decided to stop at this local legend was to pick up local Bagaduce River Oysters. 2 dozen FRESH! (Little Island Oyster Co!) Menu: Gluten-free lobster salad on local tasty greens & chopped tomatoes. Very tasty! Cheese burger & fried onion rings - FABULOUS! Burger - overcooked, few cooked onions. Meh. Beers - our own. Sat at waters edge picnic table. Gross flies! Even more gross, the Port-a-Potty! We tried this spot due to the James Beard recognition identified on the FB page for the Bagaduce Lunch. Not these days! Step up the A-game. We might be back. No way will I try the PAP.

Scott H.

Yelp
The only nice thing I can say about Bagaduce is the location is scenic on the water. The staff are rude and seem to dislike tourists (the woman who took my order allowed the local in front of me to change the seafood platter to his liking then when I tried to change it in the same way, no shrimp and extra clams, rudely told me "it comes how it comes"). Also I ordered clams and scallops and was given shrimp and scallops and the staff told me I would have to buy a side of clams for $29 and refused to fix their mistake. The food was greasy and not very tasty. There are much better fried clams in Maine and much friendlier service. Was a real disappointment as I like fried clams and had read some good reviews of this place.

Libby T.

Yelp
This was a great quick option for take out dinner and the pricing was fairly cheap. Tried the salads, burgers, hot dog, and the salted caramel ice cream on a cone. Overall, if you're visiting and looking for something good and fairly fast/cheap.. check it out! We took it to go but it's worth mentioning that they overlook a beautiful waterway with picnic tables spread out across a hillside lawn. They do close early so get there on time!

Susan B.

Yelp
Nice location and the food is good. The wait was terrible and it took more than 40 minutes to get our order. The woman at the pickup window was rude. The rating would have been higher but for the staff attitude when asked a simple polite question.

Anita C.

Yelp
Great place for a family lunch- variety of choices from fried seafood, lobster rolls, chicken tenders and hamburgers. Food was delicious and enjoyed by all. Very casual- so come as you are! Enjoy the view and eating on picnic tables by the water.

Dakan M.

Yelp
Great Food! A Gorgeous View! Bagaduce lunch is an amazing place with great vibe that will you feel the love of Maine and her people. The downside of it all is the service. I know that in the summer it's hot and it is crazy hot in the kitchen but the people there can just be flat out rude to the customers, but remember anybody in that position can be grumpy from time to time. So be kind and have a smile when going there!

Molly A.

Yelp
The food here was fine, but did not seem outstanding, and we were put off by the rules they have. Even though it's all outdoor dining they would not allow dogs to be out of the cars, which is tricky in a hot day. And they made loud announcements about it several times if anyone tried to bring their dogs. They also had signs up forbidding rock-throwing on the beach. We found other places in the area to be friendlier to pets and kids.

Tacos T.

Yelp
Food is fine. Not great. Fine. One plate of fish was fresh, the other one kinda had an ammonia taste/smell. Lobster roll is closer to deli salad. Clams and scallops were pretty good. So, why one star? Because the a-holes working at this place are the rudest of the bunch. And not just to me. I'm talking every single person in that line was talking about how bad their interaction was with the staff. Total disregard and bad attitude for everyone is how I would characterize it. Hey Bagaduce staff: you're awful.

Liz G.

Yelp
The lobster rolls are delicious BUT... customer service not so friendly (that's an understatement). Both Yelp and Google say the place closes at 7. Be forewarned: It closes at 6:30 on the dot. We were at the ordering window at 6:32. The young woman behind the counter said: "I hate to be mean (Uh-oh!), but we're not taking orders." We explained that we had driven 45 minutes to get there, but no luck (she missed out on a very good tip!). She then proceeded to take ice cream orders and serve the people behind us. As a fellow Mainer, I was embarrassed for her. It's too bad because it's a nice place and a good setting. I'm glad she wasn't trying to be mean!

Kwai L.

Yelp
Whoa a clam shack by the pier with a lake side view. We grabbed a picnic table on the pier and ordered a mixed seafood special. This included fried clams, fried scallops, shrimp, calamari, and haddock. We ordered some cucumber, tomatos, and fried onions and french fries. So we pigged out. :) How can you go wrong? It was great. Well battered and fresh seafood. Lake side view and chatting with friends. That's living.

Brendan B.

Yelp
Easy to drive past but inexpensive, amazing food with a great view. The haddock burger is massive and delicious. The haddock is fried but doesn't have a heavy oil taste to it at all, making it a must for your visit. The chicken sub (chicken, mushrooms, bacon, and cheddar cheese) was amazing. Flavored well and served on a perfectly toasted bun. We were told by locals that the onion rings were a must, and I have to agreed; Generous serving size and fried perfectly. The jalapeño tater tots are equally delicious; paired with some ranch dip and hot sauce and it's perfection. Majority of the meal we had was fried but the great thing is that it doesn't leave you with that heavy-stomach feeling that some fried foods tend to do. We left with full stomachs and complete satisfaction with the food we had at the price we paid.

Johnny S.

Yelp
The location alone should draw you in, looking over Bagaduce tidal falls, especially when the sun is low in the evening sky. You're obviously ordering a lobster roll here, and considering a side of fried clams. Everything is fresh. Not even a hint of greasiness. The lobster roll is modest -- not one of those mountains of tail meat and mayo that you have to eat with a fork and knife till you can reach the bun. Rather, it's manageable and balanced, and the fresh lobster leads the way. Perfectly satisfying. You really feel like you are eating at an iconic New England seaside seafood shack... because you are. Coming back next summer to try the soft serve.

Robinett P.

Yelp
Can't believe the ridiculous signage at this place!! You must arrive 30 minutes prior to ordering your food to read it all and be ready to follow their massive litany of instructions! We've been there in past years but this year the prices went way up and the quality and quantity of the good went way down. They have blocked off the water's edge with barricades and no longer allow folks to enjoy the Maine coast. ... one of the reasons to stop at a roadside coastal attraction. When we questioned the staff about the rationale for that, they were defensive and rude. When we gave our customer feedback they were more rude. If I could give a big fat ZERO, I would! We are Maine residents and we're embarrassed by the attitude this business presents to the public. We will never go back.

Ben E.

Yelp
Yikes, my first Yelp review and I'm afraid I can't give this one a good score at all. My friends and I ordered fish and chips, onion rings, and one of the large seafood plates. At first, they messed up our order and we had to go back. The fries were super undercooked. Everything was drenched in grease and looked like it had been dropped on the floor and summarily gathered up and thrown back on. I understand this isn't supposed to be fine dining or anything, but this was an order of magnitude worse than the other places I've been to around here. Additionally, the parking lot is too small to get any decent parking and the service was super slow on top of that. It's a shame because I know some people like this place (for reasons not apparent to me) but I would say steer clear. There are lots of other better seafood places around.

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Excellent seafood shack win a gorgeous view. Stopped here for a lobster roll ($12.50 for small and $17.50 for large), ice cream, and cheese curds. Very fresh lobster, my moose tracks (chocolate and peanut butter over vanilla) ice cream was delicious, and cheese curds were perfectly salted. What a treat for people living and visiting the area!!

Laura R.

Yelp
Just delightful. I had fries, ice cream, and soft serve (when on vacation...), all of which were delicious. Especially liked the surprisingly good vanilla/peanut butter soft serve swirl flavor. Amazing to be able to sit by the water and eat. Prompt and friendly service.

Jann J.

Yelp
This visit was our 4th visit here and while the menu has not changed the servings seem to have. Our clams and fish were good, nice and hot but much smaller than on our other visits. The clams were a little under cooked but overall tasty. A large soft serve was so small I actually asked the server if it was a large. It did not even come up to the rim on the cup and very little was in the cup. We will go back and hopefully today's meal meal was an exception.

Joe W.

Yelp
So where were you jokers when I drove 20 miles out of my way to sample your wares? It was October 6, the website said you were open, hours were listed, you'd posted on Facebook very recently....but when I got there, the joint was shuttered and the parking lot cordoned off. No mention that you'd be closed on any of the social media outlets. They all suggested that you were up and running. Did you pack it in for the season? A heads-up woulda been nice.

Jeff D.

Yelp
Good lobster rolls, fantastic location where you can watch canoeists and kayakers run the falls, but what's with the no water policy? We asked for a glass of water or even just water in our water bottle if they don't want to "waste" a cup, and they refused even after we'd just dropped $35 for two into their till for lunch. Only way we could get water was to purchase bottled water! What do they wash their hands in, Perrier? We stopped because one of us had a memorable lunch here some years ago. This was spouse's one and only and my last visit, because life is too short for mickey mouse chintziness like this.
