What Makes Long Island’s Bagels So Great?

"This Hicksville shop draws long lines and a devoted local following, known as much for its playful merch—Grateful Dead–inspired T-shirts—as for bagels baked and sold on-site. Regular customers praise a soft, light texture that recalls childhood bagels rather than the dense, overly chewy or glazed city-style, and images include a poppy seed bagel with olive cream cheese. The counter and parking-lot scenes make it feel like a neighborhood hub where people chat while they wait and insist these are the best bagels around." - Jason Diamond, Christian Rodriguez

Added: Its so telling when you see the owner respond to a 5 star review the day I posted and notice none of the negative reviews even get a response. Even the ones from weeks ago but yet 4 days ago responded to a positive one. I can only believe the owner is fine with customers getting this quality of product and don't care about the customers that aren't happy. The audacity to charge $5.50 for an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and give this little cream cheese? I ordered 2 bagels and they both had this little in each. My 3 year old daughter was so excited to have a cream cheese bagel. She likes to lick the cream cheese. Theres practically none. The bagel shop in syosset gives a nice generous portion.

Stopped by as we headed to our long road trip. I said we didn't get bagels and that was on my NY list. When I saw "24 hours" we headed there! Large shop, good variety of bagels! The cream cheese was absolutely delicious! Would certainly come again. The wait was a little long, but worth it!

Google
We could not have found a better place, on every level, than Bagel Boss Hicksville, for a family gathering for a lite bite together last Sunday. Through the kindness of Terri, who we were working with, we secured the back dining room for our group. The "buffet" of bagel sandwiches, salads, fruit and cookies, was perfect. The platters were decorated beautifully and the food plentiful. Thanks to the good care of Terri and Delaney (forgive if misspelled), throughout the time we were there, helping, refilling, accommodating every request and assisting in packing up what was leftover, for all of us to take, made our time there just perfect. Everyone enjoyed fully. On behalf of our family, a sincere thank you Bagel Boss. Thank you Terri and Delaney for your kindness to our family and your exceptional service and attention to us throughout.

Google
Not sure of the reason but this place is it the best it’s ever been. Came in today and had a warm sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese, tomato and nova and it was simply sensational. Freshness matched customer service! I will be returning soon. Whether you ask for Scott or not…you are in the best possible hands SOOOOOO if you’re looking for a great place for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner or a late night snack…this Kosher 24 hour bagel place will definitely make you happy! SIMPLY DELICIOUS!

Been coming to this location for a very long time, but today my wife and I asked for 2 bagels with cream cheese and this is what we got

Google
Having heard a lot of buzz about Bagel Boss, and being a Queens native, I decided to check it out. The bagels themselves were decent, but the standout was definitely the exceptional walnut raisin cream cheese. It's worth noting that because it's a kosher establishment, you won't find options like bacon to go with your egg, and cheese. While the staff provided attentive service, the system for ordering and waiting for pickup could be more streamlined. Both hot and iced coffee is on the side for diy. It's a little expensive, Manhattan price for long Island...

Google
Horrible customer sevice.Inspite of ordering online way ahead of time, the staff had no idea of what was ordered and the big guy at the counter hasn't even checked the orders when we reached there.Literally no rush at the store and they are just too lazy to work.He finally managed to pick up my order and was slower than a snail packing the order of a few buttered bagels!; and guess what he even messed up my order by not giving me the custom ordered items on top of all this! The Bagels are okay but honestly lost my appetite just by seeing their subpar attitude to customers.Pathetic customer service!! A complete waste of time and money.Would not recommend buying from here or even worth visiting!

Google
New: What a great start to our Sunday! The bagels are absolutely delicious, and the recipe never changes! Our family relocated to the South from this area, and we could not wait to stop for bagels on our NY visit. My teen grew up Southern but has been coming here with us for years, and hopefully, someday, he brings his kids here, too. Service is friendly and quick! 12 months ago here: The best! A must stop when we visit our families in NY. Until next time! Susan

Yelp
24 hour bagels???? Can't beat it plus they deliver to Suffolk on door dash, those 3am Sammy's hit different

Yelp
I just had to post a photo of the prices. It is just a joke to charge what this store charges for a bagel and cream cheese and don't even think about getting some fish with mayonnaise. It'll cost you the better part of one hundred dollars. Hard to fathom someone getting wealthy off the food that they sold for a fraction of these prices a couple of years ago. Thanks folks and L'Shanah Tovah.

Yelp
Not a bad spot for your average bagel, but it is not something to necessarily rave about. The bagels are alright here, but I've had better and fresher tasting ones elsewhere. Definitely not bad if its conveniently located near you, but not a top pick for myself personally! This most recent time I went I ordered a sesame bagel with butter, and got a cinnamon raison bagel instead. I don't mind cinnamon raison bagels, so I didn't want to send it back/make them remake it. But I do wonder if I got the sesame as ordered, if I would have liked it better.

Yelp
We have been coming to this shop for several months now. The displays are bright and bursting with color and the shop is big enough to feel there is room to move around. Towards the back of the store are tables to eat at. A few weeks back I had purchased the kale salad which was a bit off but the shop credited me for the pound I had bought. The bagels are fresh, the staff is sweet. The prices add up, but you pay for quality. Opened 24 hours a day. I do enjoy looking at all the food and I look forward to enjoying it all. Special shout out to the classic tuna and tortellini salad- and of course the Bagels are Boss!
google avatar

Joseph G.

Yelp
Good bagels! But prices are absolutely absurd. Why am I paying $8 after tax for a bagel that doesn't even have bacon?
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
Best bagels in LI. The bagels are huge! They have every bagel flavor but my favorites are blueberry, French toast, egg, and cinnamon raisins. Sometimes they run out of blueberry and French toast so go early. They also have every spread imaginable but my go to is the strawberry cream cheese. My boyfriend always gets a bagel sandwich with egg, cheese, and sausage but the sausage is not meat it's vegetarian. They have baked goods too, I really enjoy their muffins and black and white cookies. The line is always long but the service is quick and attentive to your order. I only go here for bagels.

Yelp
Giving 1 star because it's the lowest I can give. Overcharged me, gave me the wrong item, and would not refund. When I went up to the counter to explain to them that they charged me for something I did not get, the lady told me I was wrong and that when I paid for the correct item in the past that "I got lucky". This place used to be great, guess they need to check their new workers attitudes, specifically the blonde, older lady with glasses. Update from later in the day: ended up with food poison, don't eat the lox spread.

Yelp
I have been a Hicksville Bagel Boss Customer since 1983. Your selection is fabulous and delicious. My favorite is Everything bagel with lox ( I ask for extra, willing to pay more) cream cheese, red onion, beef steak tomato and capers. With a side of potato salad and pickle. Better than Russ and Daughter's. For a more reasonable price. You should expand your offerings like Zabar's. Other Bagel Bosses and bagel stores in general have to go a long way to measure up to your standards. I'm currently in rehabilitation for a fractured leg. Looking forward to a Bagel Boss Lunch.

Yelp
Sadly, this review isn't based on the food, but the staff. It's a shame. My partner and I had walked in and we were greeted with very unfriendly glares. We were polite and said hello as they continued to glare at us. We waited for a bit for someone to take our order and we ended up leaving and took our business to another location. We were the only customers there. It was quiet. As someone who has worked in the restaurant industry, I know the importance of customer service. The staff's behavior is inappropriate. Unfortunately, I do not recommend this place even if it's walking distance from your home.
google avatar

Yelp
Mutant sized flagels and will take orders! Not all bagel boss locations are the same....this one is extremely busy and it is obvious why!
google avatar

Agta B.

Yelp
As always, solid bagel situation. Got an egg and cheese with lettuce and tomato on an everything flagel. The flagel itself was tasty and savory. Eggs cooked to order. The cinnamon raisin with butter was soft and fluffy and yummy. Lots of choices, lots of treats, sandwiches and salads. Good local bagel place open 24hrs.
google avatar

Yelp
Bagel Boss has quality bagels in almost every flavor imaginable! I love that they have Whole Wheat Everything but you have to try their most popular flavor, the Egg Everything! If they could add a Whole Wheat Cinnamon Raisin, then I would be set. They are open except for Jewish holidays. The staff is nice and know how to move a line as most people are on their way to work in the mornings. I would recommend paying with cash to save a little as there is a fee to pay by credit card. Overall, you can't go wrong with Bagel Boss as they are Kosher and have been making bagels for years!
google avatar

Dani J.

Yelp
Came in to purchase a gift box of cookies for a funeral. First time here and the selection of cookies looked great. However after i paid i noticed the lady closed the box with a sticker. I really just wanted to double check the box since it was gift, and i simply asked the lady if it looked nice, and she says I "insulted her". I guess you can't ask general questions anymore, it was really weird and rude experience as a paying customer. I actually feel insulted and will never return to this location. Management should work on customer service skills with these employees.
google avatar

Lina E.

Yelp
Just had light tuna on a toasted flagel and was shocked at the ridiculously high prices. Flagel had very little tuna on it, the tuna was dry, received no utensils or napkins and with a juice was $20. Additionally the place was empty yet it took 20 minutes to get in and out. I will never go back. I can't see a bagel costing more than $7.00 sorry.
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
This place usually slays except for when they get my order wrong and give me a tablespoon of cream cheese for $6. For being open at 24/7 I can't complain though. Will keep coming back
google avatar

Eileen Z.

Yelp
This is my friend and I's classic bagel stop in the mornings before we go for a day hike. We alternate between getting sesame bagel with lox cream cheese and lox with veggie cream cheese. Just a well made bagel that hits the spot every time. I especially like the kale side salad! The combo is a bit expensive but the food is good and we only get it once in awhile.
google avatar

Lindsey G.

Yelp
Food is pretty much always stale and gets you sick the next day. Definitely recommend going to the Jericho location instead food is always fresh plus the staff is more friendly there.

Emmet M.

Yelp
The prices are insane! I am amazed they are still in business. Bagels are good but on par with other establishments in the area that charge less.
google avatar

Greg Y.

Yelp
The bagels are okay, but this firms violates NYS law regarding credit card surcharges. If you like being discriminated against on the basis of your method of payment, this is the place for you.
google avatar

Woo K.

Yelp
I used to come here as a kid to enjoy the bagels and loads of other stuff. It's 24/7, which obviously is a plus. Especially if you me hungry at 2am after a long night, and you need some bread. But for some reason I'm my head, this place was amazing!! After 10 years, I come back to finally realize it was just ok. The bagels were ok, the lox was ok, the pasta prima salad was ok, the pickle was pretty good though. But nothing super amazing stood out. Tbh if it's 3am, I'm in town and I need to eat, I most likely will find myself back here.
google avatar

Vanessa L.

Yelp
Inviting, fragrant Jewish deli consisting of bagels and flagels and homemade baked goods. As my visit was over the holidays, they've also had some chocolate dipped butter cookies like the kind my grandma used to make too.
google avatar

Glen C.

Yelp
The place is big and can accommodate a decent amount of seating. The bagel selections are huge and the menu is quite large and varied. There are also a slew of pastries and cookies that one can devour with a coffee or cold beverage. The problem I have with this place are that the bagels have very little flavor. They are well sized, look excellent when choosing but somehow do not translate to the flavor one would expect from the variations. The pastries are very average but by no means bad. Their preparation seems good and I'm sure many of their items taste good but for a bagel place, it should be more.
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
One of my fave bagel places! Haven't been here in awhile! Ordered everything bagel with veggie cream cheese. The bagel was soft and delish!
google avatar

Nancy H.

Yelp
The Boss Bagel shop. Huge selection of bagels, spreads, salads, cream cheeses, pastries and more! Great fast service (there's always a line!), great quality food, great taste. My fav is a veggie tuna on an everything flagel. A bit pricey, but it's worth it.

Yelp
I grew up in Hicksville and have been coming to Bagel Boss since I was a child. I remember being too small to see over the counter and the store was just a little hole in the wall, but served the best bagels and in my opinion, they still do. It has always been our family's place to go for bagels. I have since moved away but still make the extra effort to go out of my way each morning to stop in for coffee or tea on my way to work. I am always greeted by friendly staff who have come to know me, until recently. A new man is now working the counter in the morning. Not Micheal, but another man with a Hispanic accent. I don't know his name. Not only has he ignored me on several occasions but the times I have had interactions with him he has been obnoxious, condescending and down right rude and nasty. I am not a person who writes reviews and never would I have ever imagined writing a negative review for a place I have always loved, but I just had to vent as I am deeply upset by the way I was treated after coming to this store my whole life. On one occasion I had brought my bagel boss travel mug, which I purchased at the store and always get charged for a refill. Instead of an ice coffee, I asked for a tea bag because it was cold out and I wanted something warm. (I have done this many times before and was always charged for a refill because I have the mug) Well, you would have thought I was asking for his right arm! He told me that he couldn't charge me for this and walked away in a huff mumbling something in Spanish. Now, mind you a few other employees that were helping others and know me well, stopped what they were doing to tell him that in fact he was to charge me for a refill. He continued to walked into the back to ask a manager while I stood there holding up the line. When he returned, he rudely handed me a tea bag and charged me for a refill as he was told. On another occasion I had the unfortunate experience of having him wait on me and I decided this would be my last time coming to this store after a lifetime of patronage. The other day he rudely told me I couldn't have a refill and I had to buy a cup and get charged the full price when I had my refill cup. I told him he could keep it and I walked out. So, no more morning stops for me, no more family orders, no more catering orders and no more visits to this establishment ever again for me or my family. I will miss the lovely ladies at the counter each morning and I wish them all the best.

Yelp
Good to be a boss! I've been coming here since I was a young foodie, way back in the day. I remember my grandma getting bagels from here on a Saturday morning and I knew it was a special day when I woke up to bagels. I've been here countless times since. Who doesn't love a consistent yummy bagel?! And who doesn't love delicious carbs?! They don't serve any type of meat here as they are kosher. Therefore you won't be able to get a BEC or anything if that nature. My favorite bagels are everything and cinnamon raisin. Yummy!! Service has always been kind and efficient.

SyleenaDiva W.

Yelp
When my friend used to come into town every week, we would meet here every Sunday morning, have a big breakfast, and catch up! We loved it! They are so nice and the food was awesome!

Glenn L.

Yelp
I always like getting my bagels from here because there nice and hot. I go about 2 to 3 am when there just coming out of the oven along with with some Nova Lox and pickled herring. Everyone there is very friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Joe P.

Yelp
I stopped in for my usual dozen bagels order today. Great bagels perfectly cooked. Great service, great bagels. Restored my faith in bagel Boss. Last visit must have been a fluke. I will keep coming back

Greg Z.

Yelp
Bagels are okay, nothing to write home about though. Complaining about their jobs right in front of me.
google avatar

Mindy M.

Yelp
I went there today and ordered a bagel with eggs. I also ordered a side of home fries. When I got home and started to eat the home fries, there was something in my mouth. I pulled it out. It was a long piece of light brown blond hair. YUCK. (needless to say I threw the rest of it out) I called them and a Terry answered and apologized when I told her. She put the phone on hold and Kevin took the call saying he is a manager. I explained what happened and noted that I have been a long time customer and asked, did he want me to take a picture of it or bring it back. He said- No. He apologized as well and said, the next time I come in I should ask for him and he personally would make my order. (though I wonder- how that would prevent hair from being in anything else)

John M.

Yelp
I love their tuna salad on a toasted. Everything bagel very excellent highly recommend.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Both my bagel and the vegetable cream cheese were both very fresh and delicious. My self-serve iced decaf coffee was rich and flavorful. But these are even more reasons Bagel Boss is my new favorite: --roomy tables and comfy chairs in a cute dining area --a perfectly immaculate and newly renovated Ladies Room. With grab bars, in case accessibility is an issue. --pleasant, helpful staff, making me feel welcome. AND When hours later, I discovered I'd left my favorite jacket behind, I called to ask about it. Terry assured me that they'd found it, and arranged to have it sent to my home. My bff drove us here from Forest Hills because her father always took her here as a special treat. She's loved Bagel Boss for years. She wanted to share it with me. I'm so glad she did. Wonderful food, comfy surroundings and excellent service! Congrats, Bagel Boss. You're the best.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for years and it never ever disappoints! The bagels, bialys, and such always are delicious and fresh! This is always the place I think of for a great bagel and a coffee
google avatar

Nazlina G.

Yelp
I always have a great experience! The staff is super nice and always accommodating. Love that it's open late too.

John N.

Yelp
Best bagels ever highly highly recommend because I never knew there's a bagel boss till I went to Long Island Hicksville
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Bagels are very good, but they shouldn't be half-stale at 2 p.m. I'm originally from NY and now live in NC. Some NYers think all their food (and everything else) is superior. The way they act, they poop flowers and strawberries, but the truth is that we North Carolinians don't drive 30 minutes to the supermarket and spend our weekends mowing the lawn with our shirts off while drinking beer. In reality, we live just like you, just with less pollution, congestion, and attitude. And, yes, we have bagel stores. Not only do we have bagel stores, but the bagels aren't half-stale at 2 p.m. Additionally, you won't find Mercedes-driving-wannabe-rich-folks cutting you off in the parking lot and giving you the finger. Dude, if you really had potatoes, you wouldn't be flaunting a car that at least 10% of Long Island owns. Either buy a Ferrari or limit your costs on a depreciating asset. The service here was really good. So were the grapes (red) and Linden's chocolate chip cookies (three-pack). This is a Kosher bagel joint. I still don't know exactly what that means but I do know it means no turkey. Overall, if you're having bagel withdrawals, go here. If it's not worth dealing with rude and entitled people (some, not all), avoid.
google avatar

Isabella L.

Yelp
Great bagels but everything else is so expensive! This small thing of cream cheese is $2.38!!
google avatar

Elvon C.

Yelp
I actually stumpled upon this little gem while I was on the road covering a route for another work individual. From the moment u open the door your senses are hit with flavorful smells in and really wanna try everything on there menu. The staff was super friendly and the food is simply delicious. I'm from CT, but I swear I would travel to this spot on a weekend just to get there everything bagel with the Lox spread. U won't be disappointed
google avatar

Karolina S.

Yelp
This place was way bigger than I had expected upon walking in. Staff was quick and attentive. Bagel variety was huge, as well as their baked goods. Fridges were stocked with every beverage you could imagine going with a bagel. Bagel was perfectly toasted, a little too much cream cheese for my liking, but that's personal bias. Took some bagels home back to central NY, and everyone was thrilled to have some yummy Long Island Bagels. Would come back.
google avatar

Jeff A.

Yelp
Service was on the slow side aT 7:30 pm on this Sunday night. But, they loaded my bagel with date raisin walnut cream cheese & the cawfee was piping hot. Expensive, for sure, but at least the bagel was good & the serving was large.I think it;s great that they are open 24 hours, that once was standard has become super rare, like a white buffalo or a unicorn.
google avatar

Seon B.

Yelp
I came here a couple of nights ago. I was craving a bagel and was happy to finds spot open 24 hours with fresh bagels. It was easy to find and there's plenty of parking. The service I experienced was great fo it being my first. They built rapport me and let me know the options...there's no meat sold here FYI. I got a few bagels. My job has a contract with them so I'm familiar with their bagels which is good. There's lots of other options here besides bagels so I definitely would give it a try when you're in the area.
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
Whenever my high school friends and I would meet up for a reunion, I would look forward to meeting here. It's a great place for breakfast/brunch, with good coffee - hot or cold brew. Decent prices for AMAZING bagels. For the budget and the location I would say there are tradeoffs, as you can't have a formal breakfast meet up here, but definitely worth it for a cozy chat or catch up with friends. They have your favorite kosher dishes, and when ordering a bagel you are able to ask for things such as toasted, add-ons, all different ingredients. You also get a side of salad with your bagel (I love the coleslaw!) Definitely worth going to rather than the neighborhood diner, and cheaper than places such as Gabby's Bagels closer to the town of Syosset.

Adam C.

Yelp
Overpriced and misrepresented! We placed an order for lunch. Bagels were hard as a rock. Are they made somewhere else the day before? I ordered the Tuna salad in my bagel. The website shows pictures that pretend it's solid white albacore. It is chunk lite. They are taking advantage of the fact that is one of the only remaining kosher bagel places. I threw it out after one bite. $15 down the drain
google avatar

Yelp
It seems most of the patrons who have been frequenting at this establishment have been coming here since they were kids and I for one have been one of them. Now let's rewind, I lived in Queens but Hicksville has been a 2nd home for me. I grew up with some day one bros out here and I can never forget the tradition of hitting up the Bagel Boss, literally a bike ride away. Back then there was the bowling alley where the now TJ Maxx is standing and I can fondly remember hitting up the arcade playing Tron and beating Altered Beasts with my friend thanks to his lunch box full of pennies we converted to quarters. Now THAT was what you call DETERMINATION. But back to The Boss. Bagel Boss is the Long Island staple for your Bagels, hands down. I don't know anything else. I discovered all my bagels at bagel boss thanks to my Altered Beast buddy and his parent's weekly pickup of dozen bagels. Warm, chewy fresh texture , they taste that good, you don't have to put anything on it. I used to eat 4-5 bagels in one sitting, no really I was eating bagels like donuts, no less than 5-6 at a time. How I long for a metabolism like that again. I returned recently and saw that the Bagel Boss still got its charm but has now expanded with a plethora of options but we all know, we're here for the BAGELS. My go to is the lox spread on just about any bagel (I saw a rainbow bagel...I'll leave that for the TikTokkers). Their multigrain is legit as well as everything else. They also got these "FLAGELS" which I think is another name for a Bialy buuuut... I can be wrong. Yes no pics were taken because you're just gonna have to go here and witness The Boss for yourself. Don't expect any gimmicks (except for the rainbow bagel), it's just about the bagels and spreads. I'm pretty sure anything you're gonna order is gonna be a home run. Give The Boss a shot if you're in the area and make sure you know what you want because the line runs pretty quick and people gotta have their bagels. Take your time but hurry up. It's the New Yawk way, blah blah blah *talking with hands.
google avatar

Arnie S.

Yelp
Truly great bagels on smoked fish, matched by high prices and an up charge for using a credit card.
google avatar

Elise E.

Yelp
In the mood for a good bagel. I visited this business. Lots of choices NO "real" bacon or "real" sausage. I noticed flies and gnats everywhere. Store claims to be KOSHER. We all know that Scientists have discovered that flies carry more diseases than suspected. The house fly and the blowfly together harbour more than 600 different bacteria, according to a DNA analysis. Many are linked with human infections, including stomach bugs & blood poisoning. Still on the hunt for a good now FLY free bagel shop in the Queens/ LI neighborhood.

Steven B.

Yelp
Bagels, spreads and salads are the best! The Staff is fantastic and will help you with whatever you need. Always worth a trip!
google avatar

Sharon H.

Yelp
Don't get me wrong, the bagels are definitely good but they're SO expensive! I paid around $40 for 5 bagels and 3 of them were plain bagels with cream cheese... I think if you order a bagel with anything other than just cream cheese, Bagel Boss will give you a salad (pasta/coleslaw) and a pickle. I tried the coleslaw and liked it but the pickle was probably the worst pickle I've ever tried. Also, they don't serve meat so just FYI incase you wanted bacon, sausage, etc. I would love to come back but the prices are just too high for what you're getting.
