Bahia Vik José Ignacio - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Want to book a room with a view ? Start at one of the 11 unique stand-alone bungalows at Bahia Vik—with two or three bedrooms each and filled with site-specific art—or one of 10 suites in the central building. With views of the sand dunes of Uruguay’s eastern coast, the resort offers a library, a game room (with ping pong), a spa, and gym, all thanks to art-collecting and wine-making power couple Alex and Carrie Vik. Sister property, Playa , directly next door was designed by Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, and the beach property contrasts startlingly with José Ignacio’s modest, whitewashed cottages: Six light-filled two- and three-bedroom casitas, walled in glass and roofed with sea grasses, surround a titanium-and-glass main building. There you’ll find an additional four suites, a Zaha Hadid–designed molded acrylic bench, and a wall of pulsating light from artist James Turrell in a dining area overlooking the beach."

This stay came with high anticipation due to the reputation of the resort. Even with such a high bar they managed to exceed our expectations. The staff was as good as it cane gets. Our room was unique and made you just want to stay in. That is saying something with the pleasant environment of the rest of the resort. The food was good, the location right on the beach made it so easy to enjoy. From the moment Toto greeted us in the parking lot until they loaded our bags, back in our car, it was a great stay. I suggest you take advantage of the access to the two other close properties, nearby, your stay will provide and take lunch or view their respective art collections.

As always with VIK, everything was exceptional — effortlessly so. From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding. We received complimentary upgrades, our room was ready well before the official check-in time, and the concierge assisted with all reservations, recommendations, and daily plans. The personalized attention to every detail is exactly what makes VIK stand out. Highly recommended, just like all of their properties.

We have just returned from a very disappointing visit to Bahia Vik. Our room was vey substandard. This was especially true since it was priced as a luxury hotel. The furniture was sparse and chipped. The blackout curtain was ripped as was the screen on the sliding door and the room reeked of disinfectant. Most distressing was the bathroom. The shower was in the middle of the bathroom with no glass enclosure. It sprayed all over the floor. The bathroom was painted with a scuffed black paint. In addition, there was no television. The public areas are better but the rooms are inadequate for the price.

Beautiful property (but not rooms), convenient location, great service from hotel staff, but it is not luxurious enough for the price and the concierge service needs severe improvement. Our experience with the concierge was disappointing enough to drop a potential 5 star review to 3 stars. The hotel’s experience guide offers an 8pm wine tasting that we reserved. The itinerary they made us also confirmed 8pm. At 7pm that day, they messaged us to ask if we were coming because it was about to begin… they managed to book it for 7pm even though all of their own information said 8pm. We were busy elsewhere so we couldn’t make it. They did offer to reschedule, but the mistake left a bad taste in our mouths. We also reserved a 12:30 olive oil tour through them. Their information said “Starting/ending point, Vik Jose Ignacio”, but we did not get any more details leading up to the tour. At 11:00 the day of the tour, we found out they had NOT arranged transportation… so we ended up having to drive ourselves, 2 hours round trip… and they charged us the full price even though transportation should have been included according to their own “Starting/ending point, Vik Jose Ignacio”. It was their first time offering the olive oil tour as part of their experiences (clearly), and the coordination was a huge flop, and their attitude about it the whole thing being a “misunderstanding” was not right. Luckily, the olive oil tour (Olivos de Las Animas) was SO worth it. We are so happy we were able to take ourselves there, but Bahia Vik’s concierge needs to do much, much better. Hopefully they fix their mistake and continue to offer it to guests. The property is beautiful with the pool and beach, but the room we booked was not nearly worth the price. The decor was… highly questionable, and the entire bathroom was a slip hazard. Other than that, our stay was really great. Bahia Vik held a Valentine’s Day dinner that was phenomenal and incredibly reasonably priced - we loved chatting with the staff and the food was incredible. Same with the Estancia Vik Gran Asador - unique barbeque and they have lovely staff there as well. And the hotel being next to La Susana was perfect (except at night if we wanted to sleep before the party ended). All in all, the treatment from the hotel staff made our stay wonderful, but the poor concierge experience was enough to make us not want to return here again. We preferred our experience at Luz Wine Lodge way more.

This is the most special place. The entire staff went out of their way to make me feel welcomed and comfortable. The room, cuisine, and service were all perfect. Special mention to Jose Maria Toto who is the greatest concierge, and the wonderful manager Lucia Nieves.

We arrived and the people were very nice to us. However, the rooms were not good. Our balcony could not open and they were also no amenities. The service was was good but the breakfast selection was mediocre. It was very expensive and if you want to go to town, you have to take their transfer, which is also very expensive. I felt we were limited in things to do and transportation.

Service Good, place is beautiful. Rooms are good as well. However I feel it is expensive for what it is. Breakfast included but just few options. To go to town we had to get their transfers and that is expensive as well.

We had planned for almost a year to come to Bahia Vik in Jose Ignacio to celebrate my mother-in-law's 80th Birthday. Our stay more than exceeded our expectations. It is a gorgeous setting, with a large dining room/lounge with huge windows that look out on the ocean. Each room is named for the artist whose work decorates that room, which makes the experience feel intimate and unique and not a standardized hotel experience. The hotel is small, and the staff made all 9 of us feel. We were cared for individually, recognizing us whenever we walked by the front desk and continually checking on us, giving advice, or helping us with plans. |A couple of employees went above and beyond to help us. Zahira worked tirelessly to ensure we had dinner reservations, activities, and tours. When I had a concern about not being able to get into a crowded yoga class, she made sure to check into the situation and follow up with me so that I was able to enjoy myself. |Most importantly, however, Lucia was the hero of our trip. We had a challenging situation involving one of our young adult children who got lost in another town, and she stayed up all night with us, translating Spanish and advising us on how to proceed. She stayed working hours after she needed to and displayed such incredible concern, consideration, and care that we felt we were in excellent hands. We can't wait to return to this beautiful country with lovely people, delicious food, wine, and an exceptional setting.
