"American Bryan Baird makes some of the best craft beer in Japan at a brewery in Numazu, Shizuoka, with a few branches in Tokyo. The Harajuku Taproom is just off boisterous Takeshita Dori, packed with Japan’s kawaii youth and featuring grilled skewers and small plates such as crudités with garlic miso and fried chicken. The crowd here is a friendly mix of locals, expats, and beer-loving tourists. Each Tokyo Taproom has a different food menu, like pizza or kushiage , skewered, breaded, and deep-fried small bites. Baird’s portfolio of beer covers a wide range, from a citrusy Temple Garden Yuzu Ale to a Wabi-Sabi Pale Ale made with wasabi."

In the midst of Harajuku’s total chaos, this place is a true oasis of calm! Great selection of beers, tasty food, and super friendly, welcoming staff. If you’re in the area, this spot is an absolute must-visit – it’ll put a smile on your face (and make you thirsty for more)!

Very cool spot! We felt so welcomed by the host, who promptly welcome us in, and in english. Tasty beers and lovely food, we quickly made some friends inside, nice environment. Thank you for your good work.

Came here for a break from a busy day of walking and exploring for a quick drink in this tap room. Beers are 1000 yen plus, which is the going rate. They have a vast selection and a lot of worldwide brews to choose from. It’s based on the second floor in case you miss it on the first pass. Cool spot to check out if you’re in the area and feeling thirsty.

American bartender was exceptional. Very friendly, accommodating and attentive. His knowledge of the beers and Tokyo recommendations for our trip was appreciated. However, we didn’t appreciate how the manager publicly berated his staff in front of customers. In hospitality, staff are the most valuable asset and the member of staff he was publicly rude to was very very good. The manager needs to realise this.

My boyfriend found this place by chance, and it was perfect. The staff is friendly and helpful. Especially the bar manager. We would definitely go back on our next visit to Japan.

Steve was an amazing host! Great service, great beer suggestions and an all round good time - especially so close to the streets!

Google
Legit beer and yakitori. Came here on recommendations from both a local Tokyo friend and a friend back in the states while my wife and kids shopped on Takeshita street. To top it off the music playlist slaps.

Both my teenagers were shopping on Takeshita Street and decided to go for a beer. Stumbled upon this delightful pub with its wonderful staff. Highly recommended

Yelp
Not a bad find considering we needed something small to eat to tide us over before dinner. We also ordered some beer here and they were really good. The yakitori that is recommended here is really tasty. All of us liked the 5 or 6 skewers that were brought out as they were all unique but very delicious. I like how much beer they have available here as well. It's an unassuming place from the outside and just a stones throw away from the main Harajuku tourist street, but hidden enough that you wouldn't even find it unless you're looking for it.

Yelp
Came by here towards the end of the night to get a quick beer and possibly a snack. Up and light of stairs and into a moderate sized interior with a central bar and seating all around. Bartender mentioned the kitchen was closed and we were only allowed to get one beer. Decent amount of options on the draft list, selling on the Teikoku IPA (¥1100 for 500ml). More of a refreshing ale than a hoppy bitter, would have been good paired with some food. Service is okay, bartenders were chatting amongst themselves or sticking to one guest. Better to go earlier in the day.

Yelp
An old favorite of mine from university! Was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was still there, a good decade later, and even better than I remembered. The chicken and blue cheese springrolls are the platonic ideal of a drinking snack.

Yelp
Great beer selection, delicious small bites, and friendly service. I visited Baird Beer Taproom based on a friend's recommendation. There was no line/wait when the taproom opened at 5, but the seats filled up pretty quickly by 6. Everyone at Baird spoke fluent English, so it was very easy asking for beer recs and conversing with our server. I ended up ordering 2 beer flights because I wanted to try 6 of the beers on the menu (all were delicious). My boyfriend and I split several of the small plates (shishito peppers, raw octopus, fried chicken, and grilled mackerel) and we enjoyed each dish that we ordered. If you're in the Harajuku area, I highly recommend checking out Baird taproom.

Yelp
First day in Tokyo and on our list was trying a JPA in the home country! We went on a Friday night about an hour or two after it opened and it was quite full already. The two of us sat in the back room and ordered the flight option so that we could try the various beers on tap. We tried: - JPA - APA - IPA - Lager We quite enjoyed the atmosphere and the beer. The service was good and while we didn't get any food, the couple next to us did and it looked delicious. If you're over the Takeshita street craziness, this is a great reprieve in the Harujuku area. Cheers!

Yelp
Craft beer in Japan is somewhat of a misnomer. They have a multitude of influences from Germany so many of their beers are similar to basic pilsners & dunkles of Europe. However, in a world where many, many "craft" Japanese beers are similar and under 5% ABV ... Baird dares to be different! For starters, this is a cute little bar in Harajuku. When they say they open at 5pm, they really mean 5:02pm when they get around to unlocking the door. They serve a variety of bar snacks, and you can eat a whole dinner here ... on snacks. They have a HUGE. huge. HUGE. beer menu. However, much of it are variations of light beers that might remind you of sapporo. Their darker varieties, however, are what's most interesting here. I would highly recommend checking out their interesting herbal-y stouts as well as porters. Definitely a twist on what you have traditionally tasted in any other "craft brew" market.

Yelp
This Baird Beer Taproom offers on tap Baird Beer craft beers with classic Japanese izakaya (pub) food. This bar isn't as spacious as the other Taprooms in the area, and can often be hard to find a seat in without reservations, but they'll find a way to fit you in until a seat opens. ---------------------------- Details Value: (4/5) Menu/selection: (3/5) Quality: (4/5) Service/staff: (4/5) Ambiance: (3/5) Value Good prices for great food and beer. Menu/selection Beer selections include the usual Baird Beer selections as well as seasonal or shop specials and guest taps. Food offered is a variety of standard small dishes offered at most Japanese pubs. Although the food quality is good, it isn't anything out of the ordinary. Quality Great quality food and brew. Service/staff The staff mostly seem to speak English. They are all attentive and quick to bring food and beers. Ambiance A somewhat small restaurant with a couple large tables to accommodate large and small groups with some other smaller tables as well as wall counter and bar seating. May feel a little cramped. Final thoughts... Harajuku/Omotesando is offers quite a bit of restaurant options but if you want craft beers, you're probably not going to find a better option than this. Though the food doesn't blow me away, it's a solid bet.

Yelp
This is the place where they sell Baird Beer on tap. They didn't need to sell me more, I was immediately in. We came to this place way earlier than the opening hours and had to wait outside for a couple of minutes before the staff turned the lights on and unlocked the door and let us in. Perhaps they think that these foreigners were super desperate to get some beer, of which they didn't think wrong. I got a Kurofune porter and Dark Sky Imperial stout, which was great (but still nothing compared to porter/stout I could get over here in Europe, but that's because the beer scene is so much older here than in Japan) and got fried tofu as beer snack. YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT. Fried tofu as beer snack, I was in heaven. Apart from the snacks, they also have real food, and by food I mean Japanese food for everyone. This is the reason why I'm happy drinking beer in Japan, never mind the beer itself, but the snack that comes with it is really good. No more beer nuts or vinegar chips, hello fried tofu and yakitori (although I do not eat chicken anymore) I could have easily stayed here for a longer time, but alas we had to go somewhere else because we were hungry and looking forward to having dinner (life in Tokyo was hard!)

Yelp
Simply one of the best taprooms around Tokyo offering their own brews on tap with some limited editions and seasonals. They also produce decent food including a kushi (skewers) menu that is way above many other beer places around at almost decent prices. I recommend the 12 beer card purchase which will give you 2 free full pints effectively making all your next pints 800 yens worth. Did I mention this is situated at the heart of Harajuku?
google avatar

Yelp
For the price, this spot is a steal for food and beer. The menu is on the smaller side, but you'll fill up quickly. They have some very special types of beer, including seasonal options. Unfortunately, I couldn't get into any except for their Amber, but they offer a variety of sizes and types of beer. They obviously know their stuff. It took forever to get our waitress's attention to order food the first time - we had to walk up to her to get her attention - but afterwards, she was more attentive. We rarely had a beer glass empty among us. Don't forget to check the specials hanging from a pole over the doorway. Chill vibe with locals and tourists, alike, and there's no pressure to leave.

Yelp
The Harajuku Baird location is a must for any beer lover in Japan. It's right by the Harajuku subway - I've read that some said it was hard to find but that wasn't the case here - use Google Maps and look up (it is on the second floor)- and you should be good. About 11-12 Baird beers on tap at any time. I suggest Suruga IIPA (rivals imperials in the US). Food wise their cuisine is very similar to a izakaya.

Yelp
A great adult beverage spot/craft beer spot In a youngster's area. The Meiji Shrine line was too long. After walking through the crowded Takeshita Street in Harajuku we decided to to grab a beer (after having a delicious crepe). Harajuku Taproom is a block away from Takeshita street on the 2nd Floor. Seats about 10 at the counter and another 12-16 at the tables. A little different from the last Baird Taproom I visited(Bashamachi). The menu is Japanese bar food. They offered oseki (traditional New Years meal) today. Full from Dancing Crab in Shinjuku we skipped the food and went for the beer. I ordered the Harajuku Ale via hand pump. I really liked it. I favor the wheat, stouts and porters but actually enjoyed this ale. Not too bitter. Went down pretty smooth. My friend enjoyed his Suruga Bay Imperial IPA. He says it's the taste. I think it's because it has the highest alcohol percentage. Bookmarked and will gladly add it to my beer list.

Yelp
This place is pretty Americanized for a Japanese taproom (which isn't a bad thing, if you're missing the western brewery/taproom vibe). They offer a large variety of beers on tap and I wish they offered a large taster flight. The only thing they have is either a small or large pour or a 3 taster flight for 1000 yen. I would have preferred and taken a smaller pour per taster glass for more options on variety. Beer is quite decent, but service is lackluster and what the heck is going on with their ac unit there or lack thereof? It was easily close to 80 degrees inside there. Must be trying to save up on that electricity bill. We had to take off our jacket immediately the minute we sat down. They have 4 people working, yet it still took 15 minutes to flag someone down.

Yelp
Love this place! Great beer, good izakaya-type food, good service. They have a counter and about 5 tables, maybe 15 or so taps. Easy walk to Harajuku station and the juxtaposition with totally different ambience on nearby Takeshita dori is funny. (Takeshita is famous teenage shopping, taproom is very mature). Baird beer is a small Japanese company with some American ownership, they also have a few other taprooms including Nakameguro.

Yelp
One of a few craft breweries in Tokyo which is becoming more popular. A good place to have a cold one that is not of Japanese varietal. Lots of foreigners here and it's noisy which is what it should be when you're enjoying a cold one with friends. Completely opposite atmosphere from the typical Japanese joints. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) They also serve a limited food menu comprising of mostly appetizers.
google avatar

Yelp
I definitely recommend stopping in for a brew if craft beer is up your alley. Baird is one of my favorite Japanese craft beer breweries. They seem to have a number of taprooms all over the metropolitan Tokyo area, but I stopped into the Harajuku taproom for some brews and bites. The beer selection was fantastic. About 12 of their regular brews, plus 4 more specials that they have on rotation. As for their pours, they do their ales, porters, and stouts really well. From what I've gathered, each Baird taproom sets their own food menu's as they like. Here they serve up yakitori dishes. The wasabi chicken was pretty good - I'd totally recommend for a light snack. The thick cut bacon was a little over cooked and didn't do much for me. The chicken wings aren't bad either, and they are pretty huge in size. They also have sake on hand if beer isn't your thing. The atmosphere is lively and the crowd was quite friendly. Lively, but chill best describes it.

Yelp
This place has really great beer. It definitely does have a Western style, so don't come here expecting a Japanese traditional atmosphere. All of the craft beers on tap that I tried were really good. The beer was roughly expensive, but you are paying for good, quality craft beer.

Yelp
A non beer drinker's review. I came here meeting friends who love beer. The staff were far too busy prepping the next day gyoza to bother with the customers of the day. I was told by my friends that the staff take your order at the table. I had to order both drinks at the register. She seemed surprised each time that someone might need an order from her. I dont drink beer but wanted a buzz. The only thing they offer is weak cocktails and the days sake. I went with the latter. Could have been worse. Come for the beer, definitely dont stay for the service! So many taprooms around the corner to choose from.

Yelp
Enjoyable spot with friendly service. Beer tasting flight is available & plentiful styles of beer (Ale, lager, porter, etc).

Eater X.

Yelp
It took us a few tries to find this place, which had been recommended to me by fellow Can/Aussie Yelper Barry T. Just look for a sign on the alley corner and some stairs leading up. The beers we had (5 out of the 19 on offer) were all delicious. Sadly they were out of the wheat beer on our visit, so the pale ale was the winner this round. For food we had the bacon and the gyoza. The bacon was thick and deliciously smokey. The gyoza was also good. Service was friendly, we likely could have gotten by without any Japanese as the menu was mostly English.

Yelp
Great, beer lovers dream. Epic collection of beer from around the world. Count the ones you've tried. Food was good also, small portions, but very tasty.

Yelp
A great oasis in the sensory overload that is Harajuku. One of the few places we could find Japanese craft beer instead of just West Coast imports. 1. Location. It's a bit hard to find, located up an alley off The Main Street and up a narrow staircase to the 2nd floor. We missed it the first time we looked for it. 2. Beer. Assorted Baird beers on tap here and after a week of drinking Asahi and Sopporo it was a welcome change. I tried a bit of everything but really favored their Suruga Bay IPA, very flavorful with a nice 7.5 APV to boot, though we didn't have a bad beer there. 3. Food. The food here was great for a bite, we ordered several things and we're still hungry afterwards so I wouldn't suggest it for a meal. That being said, everything we ordered was delicious. The 2 things that stood out were the assorted skewers and the cabbage. 4. Atmosphere. A nice break from the craziness of the Harajuku area. Fairly small but with ample bar space. Was fairly quiet both times we went but I'm sure it can get packed at times. There aren't many good beer places around that area (though there is CraftHeads.... That's another review) and its a nice reprieve from both the typical Japanese beer and crazy Harajuku atmosphere. Overall Grade: A-

Yelp
If you don't know where to look, this place might be hard to find. Which is great, because there are few places in Harajuku not crowded. Great craft beer, great food, and great atmosphere.
google avatar

Joseph Z.

Yelp
Let my start by saying this is my first time ever in Japan. I don't really Yelp very many places(even in the USA) but man... This place is awesome! Not only is the beer delicious/amazing but the service was the best I have ever received by far! Food was great! Beer was great. Try the JPA(Japanese pale ale). It was recommended by the bartender and he was right about it. This place is very accommodating to foreigners and u will not regret coming here.
google avatar

Yelp
It was a fantastic place to grab great craft brew and small eats.
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
They've got lots of great beer and it's a good spot to escape from the scrum of harajuku. Baird makes some pretty solid beers too and if you're a foreigner traveling on your own, it's a good place to meet expats.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, good beers, attentive bartender and friendly patrons. What more could you want for. A perfect spot to pine away some time while other family or friend shop the Harajuku streets.

Yelp
In all my years in Japan never would I imagine someone opening a beer bar in Harajuku. If you are not looking for this place, most likely you'd never find it let alone walking down this street. Off of Takeshita Dori, famous for its little girly shops and over crowded with tourists lies this small craft beer bar that also serves Yakitori and other small plates. Mostly counter with a few larger tables, it's a great place for a destination or a stop by if you're in the area. They have their standard selection of craft brews on tap plus plenty of seasonal beers as well as "guest" beers. The whole atmosphere is low key and decorated with beer cans/bottles from around the the world, but mostly from the USA. And they have an English menu as the owner is from the USA. Only draw back is it's not cheap.

Mitch C.

Yelp
A dozen plus beers on tap plus sake and Sochu and some bites if you are hungry. Take a break from the shopping and pop in for a beer. English seems to be the primary language so no language barrier. Plus the beers are fantastic
google avatar

Ken H.

Yelp
This became one of our favorite bars + beer halls in Tokyo in our week-long stay there. The vibe was friendly and intimate and authentically nu-Japan, the beers superb and local, and the locale so conveniently close to Harajuku train station. We found ourselves returning late night to grab small bites of izakaya food here as well, without the sometimes grumpy, hurried, and tourist-unfriendly vibes of more cramped office worker yakitori bars.
google avatar

Luis C.

Yelp
For being so close to Takeshita Street, this is a surprisingly (and welcomingly) chill place. Good variety of Baird beers on tap, all of which (that I tried) were good.

Tess T.

Yelp
The food is very good. They have lots of small plate dishes, so you can easily try different foods and share with your companions. I especially liked the chorizo and the grilled shishito peppers. I love it that you can get simple vegetables, like tomato wedges with mayo. The staff all speak excellent English (this place is very popular for tourists), and the menu is in both English and Japanese. The staff are friendly and helpful. The dining room is non-smoking, which is not common in Tokyo, so it's very pleasant to sit and enjoy your food. The ambiance is casual and low-key, so it's a nice break if you are feeling that Tokyo is hectic and crowded. I'm not a beer drinker, so I won't try to rate the beer, but the main draw of the place is craft beer, and they have a pretty big selection of their own brews. I always look forward to eating here when I visit Japan.
google avatar

Mina S.

Yelp
An oasis in the touristy area of Harajuku with excellent beer and yakitori. The latter is mostly chicken, so be warned if you are vegetarian. I got the Kurofune porter and British Best Bitter real ale. They were both great; very interesting to try the real ale, which was not carbonated. As I waited for the food, I noticed most of the clientele were expats. The chicken heart, gizzard, and skin were expertly prepared and perfectly seasoned. Great textures! I don't normally like chicken breast, but I ordered it anyway and was not disappointed; it was not dry and each piece was served with a dot of plum paste. The sour plum flavour complemented the plain meat well. The breast is pretty much the worst part of the chicken in my eyes, but they know how to deal with it here. Also the service was very good and they have English menus.
google avatar

Kevin Q.

Yelp
this is the best japanese craft beer in my opinion. the harajuku tap room (this one) is a bit quieter and has a more japanese feel to it than the nakameguro one. the rising sun pale ale is the clear superstar of their line up, but the imperial IPA is also impressive as well (kind of like stone ruination IPA).
google avatar

Kristen C.

Yelp
Loved it! Great beer! The staff were friendly and quick! It can get pretty crowded on the weekends but it's a fun place to stop by to escape the busy harajuku takeshitadori. The food is pretty tasty too!
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
Great spot with a large selection of Japanese craft beers. The beers were lovely, our favourites were Kurofune Porter and Suruga Bay Imperial IPA. the staff were friendly and the barman spoke fluent english. The beers are more expensive than we've paid elsewhere, ¥1,000 a pint, but this is a bit of a tourist hangout in the centre of Tokyo and you're getting a craft beer.
google avatar

Kristina B.

Yelp
Was looking for someplace with craft beer, even better to find a local brewery. Had the Suruga Bay Imperial IPA and the Harajuku Ale. Both compare to the excellent craft beers of the Seattle area. Staff mostly speak Japanese, but a little English didn't seem to be a problem. If I ever found myself back in Tokyo this place would definitely be on my list as I always like a good craft beer, especially from the source!
