The rooms are 3-3.5 stars, but the food is at least 4 stars. The staff are also super friendly and accommodating, so rounding up the overall rating to 4.
El Berro is a city in Spain you've likely never heard of, since it's tucked away at the top of the mountain, and about 45 minutes to an hour away from the city of Murcia. This is an ideal place for a weekend getaway, or even something like a family reunion. They don't have just one large hotel that encompasses all the rooms, but rather, separate buildings that each have a few rooms, and also a living room area and mini fridge. You can tell that parts of Bajo El Cejo were likely recently remodeled. However, there are some other areas that haven't been, and that is the reason for the slightly lower ratings. We had a room on the ground floor, which had a larger layout, but the grout on the shower floor had black mold since it takes so long to dry out. I wasn't the biggest fan of the rustic vibe, but our bed and pillows were comfortable, and they had AC for the rooms.
The best part about staying at Bajo El Cejo is the privacy, and being able to get out of the hectic city pace. However, I don't recommend staying here if you plan on going back into the city of Murcia or any of the coastal cities, since it takes an hour or two to get there. Also, the mountain road up to the hotel is quite twisty (do NOT take route that forks left, since that one has crazy switchbacks) and there are wild animals, so driving at night isn't easy. The other best part about staying here is the staff- the owner, Andres, is wonderful, and Pippa, one of the workers, is superb. She is English, and can also help translate words to Spanish if needed. They are both so caring and accommodating, I was sad to leave them! The food here is also delicious- a breakfast buffet is included with the room, and they also serve a 4 course dinner nightly that you can opt in for (you just have to tell them in the morning so that they purchase enough food). Andres also grows some vegetables on the property, so a lot of what you eat is organic.
Overall, I enjoyed my stay here even though it wasn't the Ritz Carlton. I was sad I didn't get to use the pool, which gives you a spectacular view of El Berro.
