Bakehouse - Gastro Obscura

"The Hong Kong-style egg tart, with its jiggly custard center and just-baked pastry crust, sits proudly on almost every local bakery’s shelves, and has done so for the better half of the past century. So for a Swiss-Frenchman to change up the recipe, and make his version an absolute hit that has queues round the block with tourists and locals alike, is no mean feat. This baker, Grégoire Michaud, cut his teeth in the pastry kitchens of five-star hotels, and when he launched his own brick-and-mortar, Bakehouse, he wanted to pay tribute to the city he’s called home for the past couple of decades by creating his spin on this local favorite. His egg tart has a flaky laminated sourdough base; its center meltingly creamy, and intensely eggy, but it’s not the only thing you should get—the pretzel croissant is satisfyingly chewy, sprinkled with just the right amount of salt, and the beef rendang pie will make your palate sing. Keep an eye out for one-off seasonal specials. Know Before You Go The first outlet in Wan Chai is the only one with a cafe, where you can sit and enjoy the myriad bakery items plus a menu of cafe favorites, and while the rest are grab-and-go bakeries, they all serve drinks (including great coffee—they roast their own beans), so you can still have a one-stop snack break whichever branch you land at." - janiceleunghayes

Super Fragrance

Google
Ordered egg tarts for $12.50 and folded eggs for $88. Egg tarts egg was wonderful but crust could have been better. Folded egg on sourdough bread was amazing. The combination with chorizo and feta was amazing. Very filling too. Normally i won't comment on the deco but special mention also goes to the smart use of mirror which cause them to have an art piece that changes throughout the day.

Google
Arguably the best tasting egg tarts in Hong Kong. Not too sweet and butter used for the pastry was so fragrant. Ate it on day 1 of my trip and decided that we had to bring back two boxes of x 6 egg tarts back to Singapore on our last day. Please consider having an outlet in Singapore!

One of the best egg tarts I’ve had in Hong Kong! The flavor is rich, the texture is perfect, and it’s fresh out of the oven. Absolutely love the place and its cozy vibe. Can’t wait to come back and try more of their bakery items next time! 🥮✨

Google
Arguably one of my favourite egg tarts in hk! Everything was well balanced and not overly sweet. The crust was crispy and flakey, perfectly complimenting the creamy custard filling. Their iced latte also very nicely paired with the egg tart, you can choose between their nutty house blend and a more fruity blend. Also loved the atmosphere of the store, will definitely be back next time to try the brunch menu as well!

Google
Love love love bakehouse egg tart! I’ve tried some other places and have to say they have superior pastry compared to others. The tart is very flaky and light. The egg and caramel is not too sweet. One piece is never enough! Their chicken curry pie is a must-try if you’re looking for savory option. Onion and mushroom quiche is also delicious. Overall the price and portion are reasonable. Highly recommended egg tart place in HK

Google
Second time we have bakehouse Portuguese egg tart. Overall experience is not as good as the first time because the tart is not warm. Overall, it is still good and worth a try if there is no lineup.

Google
Wonderfully fresh pastries. The sourdough egg tart was a wonderful twist on a classic. The pain au chocolate was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, fluffy and delicious. Wonderful selection.

Google
Quite well known bakery and all day cafe , close to wanchai road. The bakery items are very good but on the expensive side, thanks to it catering to the tourist crowd. The place is relatively small and divided into 2 parts, one for dining and the other for takeaway. The staff is friendly and polite. A good place to have breakfast with friends and visit once when in hongkong.

Yelp
Originally went to the location in Tsim Sha Tsui around 10am on a Wednesday and the line was crazy! They were also out of the Portuguese egg tarts at the time and that they were baking more but not sure what time it'd be ready. We already had plans that day in Central and I saw they had a location there so decided to drop by that one and there was no wait and plenty of pastries to choose from. So I would recommend going to the one in Central. I of course went for the Portuguese egg tarts but also got a hazelnut cream donut. Both very delicious but the tart was def the star! The crust was flaky and you can taste a hint of sourdough. The custard was also very creamy and not too sweet. I speak Cantonese so was able to converse with the workers about recommendations and they were very friendly so cannot attest service as a foreigner. It's a small location with no tables to sit and enjoy which would be my only complaint. I wish I could've brought back a dozen to bring back home. I did bring back a few that I wasn't sure would make the trip to LA on a long flight but was still very good after toasting up in the oven. A must visit for HK for sure!

Yelp
This Custard Tart is worth waiting for!!! If they have Custard Tart wait inline. The line moves very quickly. It was Delicious. Custard Tart was Hot and Creamy on the inside, The outside was Crispy and Flaky. So worth the wait for us. Must Try if you are in the area.

Yelp
Bakehouse is crowned as serving the best egg tarts in Hong Kong, which has driven both the locals and tourists into a frenzy. Even if you've never visited Hong Kong, you must have seen these viral egg tarts on Reels. It's a grab-and-go bakery with long lines snaking down the block at every location. As a local, I can promise their egg tarts and pastries are 10000% living up to its hype. Grégoire Michaud, the founder, tweaks the traditional egg tart recipe by using a sourdough crust, crafted from the same dough of their croissants. The custard's jiggly and eggy center, combined with its beautifully laminated crust, introduces an extra tang to the familiar bite. Its caramelized top reminds me of Portuguese egg tart. Bakehouse egg tarts taste the best when they are fresh out of the oven. Otherwise, reheat the egg tart in an oven/air fryer to crisp up the crust and get the best experience. You need to make the long wait worthwhile, so don't sleep on their other pastries. I used to buy quiche as breakfast at Bakehouse every time I stopped by. They launch new seasonal items regularly that would get you crazy excited.

Yelp
I saw a line out the door at Bakehouse, so the Asian in me went to stand in line too. Luckily the line moves pretty quickly, so I was able to order and get out within 15 minutes. They have a lot of baked goods and pastries but I only ordered their egg tart, which is what I think they're famous for. The crust was super flaky and the custard was rich and creamy with just the right amount of sweetness. It tasted so good I wanted to bring some back to LA with me.

Yelp
After hearing that one has not really been to Hong Kong until one has eaten Bakehouse egg tart, I decided to join the bandwagon and give it a try while passing through the area. The long line actually moved quite quickly since everyone knows what they want - the signature sourdough egg tart. The bakery also sold other western baked goods such as croissants, sourdough loaves, donuts, danishes, and even king cake. Even though each egg tart costed 12hkd, it was definitely worth it - the tart was super flaky, and the custard was rich and subtlely sweet. I ended up trying many egg tarts on my trip across the Cantonese bay area of Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, and the Bakehouse egg tarts were the best. I ate one egg tart right after I bought it, and it was lukewarm and creamy. The other egg tart I saved for later, and it was still surprisingly crispy and good.

Yelp
We were told that the Bakehouse bakery had the Portugese style egg tart, and that the Bakehouse opened at 8am. We got there at 8:30am and the lady in line in front of us bought the last two tarts. We settled on a couple of pastries and but were so disappointed that I can't remember what they taste like. We did go back on another day and the supply did last until we got there at 10:30am. The egg tart did not disappoint, light, flaky and delicious. Go early if you want some!

Yelp
Fancy bakery that mixes European techniques with Asian flavors. It's good, but since it was a take out spot, it's a bit pricer than your average Chinese bakery. It is definitely worth trying for a twist and the bakes are good. If they were toasted up, it would be a much better experience for the meat pies, but I'm eating in my hotel room, so not an option. Their go-to is the sourdough egg tart. The crust is more similar to pastel de nata, the Portuguese version with a flakey crust vs shortbread, not as sweet, almost a bit savory. The egg custard seemed average. Also tried their donut. Good quality chocolate, good size, bit messy to eat, but if I had to be picky because it's a $38 donut, it just seemed like a day old, not quite peak freshness considering I got here when it opened.

Yelp
Bakehouse is such a cute little shop. They're best known for for their sourdough egg tarts! There's a dine in area and a takeout area, with a limited menu for the take out options! Dine in has slightly limited seating but we were able to be seated quickly! I got the chili folded eggs on toast and my mom got an apple crumble doughnut. The doughnut wasn't very sweet, wouldn't get it again. The chili folded eggs on toast was delicious and would highly recommend! Staff was very nice. They do speak English and Chinese!

Yelp
If you come to HK you must eat egg tarts. However bakehouse has a slight twist on the traditional egg tart with more of a Portuguese style with flaky sourdough crust. Note there are several locations. I went to the one in tsim sha tsui but for some reason it's not showing up on yelp. If you want to guarantee to get one, be early. I lined up at 715am (they open at 8) and there were already 3 ppl ahead of me). The line grows quickly and by the time I bought the tarts and left, the line stretched 2 blocks with ~80+ ppl waiting. Personally, it was worth the wait. Delicious hot out of the oven, flaky buttery crust that wasn't too oily and custard like filling something between consistency of traditional egg tart and pastel de Nata. It's about double the price of traditional hk egg tarts, clocking it at about $12.5HK, but still a steal for a delicious treat!

Yelp
Great French Bakery. Fantastic coffee, breakfast, and pastries and they even had a sausage roll to assuage my Kiwi tastebuds !

Yelp
So far, hands down or up, best egg tart or tan tat, that I have had in a long time. Friends and family rave about it when they are visiting HK and after seeing the 30min to 1 hr line up outside their store. That's a very good sign. I opted to go early In the morning when they are just opening. Too bad today is my last day so I went for broke: I order 8 boxes of egg tart. Each box has 6 tarts. It is still warm as I walk happily back to my hotel.

Yelp
Egg tart is just amazing. The ratio between the dough and the tart is perfect. Would refer my friends to go here!

Yelp
Came here after it became a celebrity internet shop for their famed sourdough egg tarts. The best part was the crispiness of the outer crust, which reminded me of a pastel de nata. The filling though, lacked flavor and it didn't really taste like I was eating anything to be honest. The raisin scone also tasted more a biscuit and lacked the proper texture of a scone.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best bakeries in Hong Kong. Great selection, delicious, amazing staff, good value. This is a unicorn of a place in Hong Kong. Their croissants are perfection. Their hot cross buns is the best I've had in my life. The sourdough is the definition of perfection. Crunchy on the outside bouncy and fluffy inside.

Yelp
Craving for some sweets? Here is the place to go! The Bakehouse is really famous recently with their egg tart and croissant. I waited around 30 mins for a table but totally worth the wait! Tips: if you go before 12noon, the line is shorter!

Yelp
I find myself coming to Bakehouse whenever I'm in the Wan Chai area. I'm so glad I gave this place a second chance after my first visit wasn't that great. The pastries here are really my favorite in Hong Kong. The croissants, cookies are out of this world. I also really like their take on the Macau style egg tarts. The sourdough crust is more crunchy and less flakey than the traditional version.

Yelp
The best "western" bakery in Hong Kong. This is a must try for anyone in Hong Kong looking for a nice, flaky baked treat. Definitely come and try their signature sourdough egg tarts, truly unique and the perfect little snack. Other must haves: ham & cheese croissant (seriously, the best with the crunchy little cheese baked pieces of cheese on top of the croissant), cinnamon pecan roll (for those who miss having a Cinnabon nearby), pretzel croissant stick, and they are known for their signature croissants. There are many more treats to try, so give them all a taste if you can! There's a quick takeaway storefront that usually has minimal wait time if any, and there's also the sit-in cafe next door which has a wait (45 mins+). It's well worth the wait, the brunch treats are as delicious as they are beautiful. Truly thankful because I am pretty spoiled for being able to walk here whenever I want; I stop in for a treat or weekday breakfast at least once a week. Staff are friendly, SUPER nice and quick. Such a great bakery and absolutely one of my faves in HK!

Yelp
Great bakery for breakfast and lunch ordered the pumpkin squash soup, chicken avocado egg sandwich and lemonade. Desserts had the banna and chocolate cruffin, sourdough egg tart and mango donut. Once you get seated the service and food is fast!!!

Yelp
Line of people at first open... worth the 30m wait. Chocolate croissant was fair, not a ton of chocolates. Crunchy but needs more butter. 3 stars Egg tart was the gem... perfect custardy in a perfect cooked bread. Have to be because this is what HK is known for... 5 stars

Yelp
HOMG! Warning! This is not your average bakery. Opened by former Four Seasons pastry chef Gregorire Michaud, this humble bake shop serves up some wonderful French pastries that will leave you wanting more. If it's not sold out by the time you get there, order a cruffin (croissant x muffin) filled with fresh custard. They also have breads, tarts, cookies and other freshly baked goods too. A set menu and a selection of teas and coffees makes this place a wonderful lunch break or snack stop. You might just find me in a corner dotting the bread crumbles onto my fingers because it's that good!

Yelp
The signature egg tarts on a sourdough bread crust are good, but nothing life changing as others have made it seem. They run out by 2:30/3pm each day so if you're gonna try it go early. It is a bit too sweet for me. Their croissants are also flaky, buttery, and good.
google avatar

Jo N.

Yelp
Review based solely on the croissants. The croissants tasted burnt so the taste was ruined. It was also not as butter as other places. It was a bit soggy, doesn't have a crispy, flaky texture that croissants are supposed to have. Overall disappointing, and not worth it.

Yelp
Bakehouse is a trendy little cafe/bakery that seems to have gotten even better since they first opened. Great coffee, baked goods, and entrees. Service is excellent, but there is almost always a line no matter when you get there (I was there for brunch at 9- right when they open) Their sourdough hazelnut doughnut was unreal. It was slightly crunchy on the outside due to the dusting of sugar, the chocolate glaze and chopped hazelnuts. This was complemented by their light hazelnut cream filling. The oatmeal cookie was also great! I liked how it was crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside and also big enough for two. Their generous use of raisins was greatly appreciated. The eggs are pretty standard, good sourdough and bacon, nothing all that special for the unadventurous diner. On the contrary, their uni (sea urchin) toast may have been a bit too adventurous, or at the very least it's conception could do with some tweaking. The use of pound bread was a bit odd because it added something sweet to an otherwise fishy dish. This choice in bread also didn't do any favours to the structural integrity as the dish was a bit challenging to eat on the grounds that everything kept falling over. I actually wonder if it would've been beneficial for them to use a similar approach to what they did with their avocado on toast, in other words use poached eggs instead of scrambled eggs, and serve the uni and ikura with a hollandaise sauce so that there's a slight tartness instead of that odd sweetness. Perhaps they could venture further and consider sauces based off of a soy sauce reduction or a wasabi infusion (e.g. wasabi aioli or soy vinaigrette) While I probably won't be ordering the uni toast in its current form again anytime soon, I definitely look forward to trying their other menu items. I recall in my initial visit that the French toast was very good, as was their cinnamon bun.

Yelp
I ordered their cinnamon roll and a dozen egg tarts here on the last day of my trip, looooooved the egg tarts. Wish I had stopped by earlier, my partner is a local Hong Konger and he was obsessed too. Will definitely be back during our next visit..

Yelp
My fat ass says yes....had this on my list for a while as I am always in need of good pastries when life is feeling a bit meh. All their yummy baked goods was pretty much sold out by the time that I got there at 2. So I decided to dine in and have the lunch set. For a reasonable $98 you get a sandwich, soup and a drink - all of which was super yummy. There is a huge amount of people queueing as there are limited amount of seats but this is worth the wait. As a Passions regular, this is enough for me to want to cheat and come here instead. The chocolate cookie and scones seem to be a big hit so I will definitely be returning to taste some of that goodness. Definitely recommend coming and coming early

Stephanie K.

Yelp
Service is good. Up scale bougie bakery. Sourdough egg tart has an interesting texture, not quite flakey but not completely oily. Scones is a complete fail... has the consistency of a biscuit, SUPER dense... The cubano was excellent. Would not go out of my way to come here, better bakeries in HK.

Yelp
the egg tart was done with sourdough so interesting but less flaky. the apple fruit tart was awesome, perfect. some atypical takes on classics.

Tori T.

Yelp
I came here for the sourdough bread, which I absolutely miss after my trip to California but it wasn't as good as the one i have tried in California. The sourdough bread isn't bad but a bit disappointing for me. The raisin cookie is pretty good and I would suggest adding more flavors to choose from, such as cranberry etc.
