the food was really good I had a beef burger and the bun was delicious along with the sweet potato fries the dessert is really good I had the Apple streusel cake with ice cream and those were both very tasty the service is also great and the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming

Ordered a burger medium and they said they don't do temps it's too hard to do. The burger was dry and crispy. They gave you a dish with pre packaged sauces to add to the burger. Ordered Mac and cheese as a side and it had zero flavor. The chicken on the lemon ricotta pasta was the best part of the meals we ordered. No refills on soda. Told the waitress the chicken was really good but the Mac and burger were not great. She waived us off as if it wasn't anything she cared about. Not impressed.

We visited for dinner on a Sat night around 5:30 and were able to get seated outside on the patio. They had a healthy selection of beers to choose from and a varied menu. My bride ordered the Asian Salad ($13) and a side of sweet potato fries ($8) while I went with the Ahi Tuna ($22). It was well prepared and hit the spot. They seemed to be short staffed and the entire crew was hustling to keep up with all the tables.....they did a fine job!

For dinner in one of the most remote locations in America, Sugar Salt and Malt really hit the spot after a day hiking in the Great Basin National Park. Five stars for just existing in such a remote location. My server suggested that they had a prime rib dinner special that evening and I couldn't resist trying it. The food wasn't over the top in flavor and quality but was solid, flavorful and an unexpected treat. The prickly pear margarita wasn't my favorite but was certainly refreshing. I just like a little more tart taste in my cup o' tequila. The international crowd seemed to enjoy the outdoor dining ambiance while I, being solo, hung out and ate at the bar. The staff were friendly, maybe a little inefficient in their efforts, but all were helpful given time. I felt a little bad for the owner-chef, who seemed to be herding cats at times. Overall, I'm really glad I had dinner here in Baker rather than waiting to eat in Ely where I spent the night. I wish the owners and staff success and will be back when I'm in the area.

Great food, good friendly service. The Zinfandel port was excellent. There was a split plate charge and a 4% charge for using a credit card, just be aware. I didn't see any advance warning of these. Server actually remembered my wife's dietary restrictions after only one visit and adjusted our order accordingly.

After visiting Great Basin National Park, I found this restaurant in the little town of Baker. This was no time to be fussy, as I think this is basically the only restaurant in town. I did see that there is a cafe at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center, but I did not think their offerings were very tempting at all. The food here was good, but the day I was there they only had two different items being offered at lunch time. I ordered the Turkey and Brie Panini for $11.50, which was fine. The other item that day was a pastrami sandwich. The place is nice inside and there is spacious seating. The place is very casual, so you order at the counter, take any seat you want, and then they bring you your food when it is ready. The only issue is the extremely limited menu. However, in all fairness, just be glad you found this place.

Wonderful unexpected gourmet food, great service, good wine and beer selection. White sauce pizza was amazing. Ice cream sandwiches for dessert were also top notch.

Outstanding food in a tiny town! Stunningly delicious AND such friendly servers! Perfect for dinner after hiking and exploring Great Basin National Park!!! Great drinks, local beers, homemade desserts, and a delightful funky yet quiet ambiance. I highly recommend this dining experience.

Stopped in after almost dying from hiking to the summit of wheeler peak. Haven't exercise that much since my last trip to an all-you-can-eat buffet. The raviolis were the best I've had. They did have a bar, which I didn't choose to partake in since I was already dehydrated and had a 2 hr drive home. The white sauce pizza toppings were good, thin crust style. I would have preferred the crust to be crisped up a bit more. Apple dessert, weekly rotating menu, was good. Over all, good menu with lots of variety and many unique options. Waiter was very nice and kindly waited until I ended my phone call to come over and take my order. Diabeetus approved.

We had a bad experience at the Sugar, Salt, & Malt restaurant in Baker, NV. One of the owners was very combative, for no reason at all. We were asking for clarification on the price of the bill, and she said to pay it or she would call the police. Must have had a bad day. Anyway, it was very inappropriate. It spoiled our time in Baker. The food was good, and we were in there the day before, and had a great experience with the waitress that waited on us. Too bad the owner was so angry.

This was probably one of the strangest experiences I have ever had in my life. My best friend and I were in Great Basin for a day during our trip across the country. She had probably had the worst possible day known to human kind, we were tired from the 7 days of driving prior, the elevation change, and on top of that we were hangry. With no service on our phones, we just kind of drove until we found somewhere that looked edible. We walked in right as it opened for dinner, and we were the only people in the restaurant as that was like 4pm. The bartender was the most jolly guy ever. He was so excited to hear about our trip out, and honestly for being a local of such a small town, he was the perfect person to be working at this complete hole in the wall, since it is most likely dealing with tourists. We also would have appreciated the ambiance much more if it weren't for our extenuating circumstances at the time. I think this is a great place to go on a date, or just with family and friends. They have a bar area, a back room with couches and an additional bar, as well as a central dining room. It really can be dressed up and dressed down and I just loved that. Honestly it was a totally underrated restaurant that I wish I could go to more often, but it is in a completely different state than where I live obviously. I ordered the Parmesan Crusted Salmon, and my friend ordered something that I can't find on the menu that I am pretty sure was a daily special or something that they made up because of the shear state we appeared in. I think it was some sort of beef tips and gnocchi if I remember correctly. All that I can say for certain was that it was absolutely immaculate. The protein was cooked well, and had a good moisture content. The gnocchi had a garlic taste in the sauce, and every flavor complimented each other very well. I had a really great time at Sugar, Salt & Malt. When I think back to it, I have not laughed as hard as we did at this restaurant in a very long time. My stomach was aching, and the waiter just helped us keep the positive vibes and I had such a great experience. Whenever I return to Great Basin (it was my favorite stop) I will be sure to come back!! Definitely beats whatever they serve at a visitors shop.

Not bad! Excellent service, and the pizza I had was pretty delish! Full cocktail bar as well. This place is kind of a third fancy bar, third coffee shop, and a third fine dining. This is a small town so having everything packed into one go is pretty neat. There is a small lounge area, and they sell shot glasses, hoodies and other merch there. The 2 cons I had was I wish the portions were a tad larger, and the crush was a little too crispy for my taste. Some may enjoy the crispness, and many have smaller stomachs than I Either way, for a small town you really can't beat it.

After a nice tour at Lehman Caves, this cafe is a refreshing place to be at. The place is quaint and modern. They serve good coffee in the morning and for dinner service, they have a menu that caters for everyone. We ordered a couple of root beer floats and pizza to share for snacks, and one of my friends also ordered an iced mocha coffee. The food and drinks were great, and they were all handmade by the owners, Tabitha and Cheri, who are very nice and accommodating. We will definitely go back to Sugar Salt Malt the next time we visit the Great Basin!

Went here with my group after our hike at the Great Basin National Park, we were really excited to try this place out after seeing couple of good reviews. The place is well decorated with cute furniture and really nice bar. We ordered several dinner items (e.g., falafel burger, ravioli, briskets, etc.) and couple drinks. The drinks were well made and delicious specially the Peach Ice tea (must try). I got the Falafel burger and it was disappointing. It was so dry and buns were burnt and only have one piece of lettuce with two slices of tomato. It has no sauce with it so I had to ask for ketchup and mustard to eat with. My friends got the ravioli and they were not seasoning well, their items were very cheesy and not flavorful. My other friend got truffle Mac and cheese and brisket but it came out just regular Mac and cheese with no truffle. The Mac and cheese was again not flavorful and bland, the brisket was dry and it tasted like it was just boiled. Lovely place but hope it will continue improving in the future.

We visited Baker in October of 2023. Amazing little town of 70 very friendly folks--North and South Baker. This restaurant was a real surprise and a gem of excellent homemade food, good drinks, and thoughtful service. If we're back that way again (in the middle of Dark Sky country), we'll definitely come for dinner. AND the next morning we had lattes and fresh pastries when they open for breakfast. Highly recommend. And you are close to Great Basin to take in beautiful sites. Beautiful sites and excellent food and drink. What more can you ask for?

We ended up going back 3 more times during our one week stay! Breakfast was delicious! Lunch was also delicious! The last night in town we had dinner there again and I'm still thinking about the raviolis and the ice cream cookie sandwiches!

We stopped in for take out and couldn't be more pleased! Great staff and vibe. We had a drink while waiting and everything was as friendly as can be. Plus, the food was excellent! Above and beyond for the area. I especially liked talking talking to the young man behind the bar about his off road biking adventures! Highly recommended.

We were slightly pinned into a corner for dinner. This was the only sit-down restaurant that was open during our visit and conveniently across the street from the Starlight Inn where we stayed. Eaters might have better luck at breakfast or lunch rather than dinner. Don't order the beef tips with gummy potato gnocchi in a gritty gorgonzola sauce. The inconsistent beef ranged from tender and smoky to leathery and sinewy. Don't order the endlessly chewy ribeye steak which was the highest priced menu item but the worst thing I ate on a 5-day trip through Nevada. In a state where I've had excellent rib roast dinner buffets for dirt cheap, I was expecting the rib eye steak (the same cut of meat) to be good. Sides were unevenly cooked stringy green beans with an odd bacon jam that was only sweet jelly and a baked potato smaller than a tennis ball (could fit inside the cocktail tumbler) and a key reason why I left the restaurant hungry. It wasn't all bad. Surprised that a café in a lonely town had a full liquor license, try a cocktail like the Old Fashioned even though it comes in an atypical choice of glassware and somewhat like a Manhattan.

Ate here after a long hike in Great Basin natl park - what a wonderful surprise! Great food and drinks had the tilapia and husband had the ribs and we both had great vodka drinks !

Great place to grab a bite to eat. The staff were friendly, the place was clean and well appointed. We stopped for lunch and enjoyed the paninis and chips.

This place is such a gem! I ordered the caprese panini and chose grapes instead of chips, the bread was so good and the mix of cheeses and pesto was incredible! The staff is so great and food is awesome. Can't wait to stop in Baker again soon!

Not a bad breakfast joint. Simple, clean atmosphere. Interesting menu, with a few non traditional breakfast diner options. Food is simple and executed acceptably but also undifferentiated. Kid friendly. Gets job done if looking for food in Baker, which has limited options.

We went here twice during our stay at GBNP. First time was for coffee--the lattes were excellent--and the second time was for lunch. Both experiences were fantastic. Lunch was a limited menu but the sandwiches we had were really good. And I got one of their house made ice cream sandwiches for dessert and it was really, REALLY good. The restaurant is very attractive inside--spacious and bright, and comfortable. Will definitely go back if we ever go back to Great Basin.

Cute rustic place for being one of the only options to eat at after hiking GBNP. Ordered pizza and it was greasy and the sausage had a weird taste. Wish I had packed more food to make it home instead of trying this place.

This is a hidden gem - the small restaurant has cute decor inside with amazing food! They focus in having freshly made food and it works - great chicken/waffle appetizer and side salad. My wife had the Mac & cheese & side salad - all very good. I definitely recommend.

A definite surprise in a town with a population of 41, although visitors to Great Basin National Park must make it possible. We went on a Friday night, one of the last nights for dinner before the season ends (assuming the breakfast and lunch hours remain). The food was great - steaks, cocktails, dessert - and the place was packed. Live music and friendly owners and staff.

Servers inexperienced and inpersonable. Met owner, abrupt to the point of rude, winessed her being beligerant with others. Food mediocre to decent. Beef tips ok, Gorgonzola gritty, and the gnochi was somewhere between to chewy to just gross. In door dining room full, so sat on back porch with all the flies. At one point had around 12 on my plate, fighting them off is a fun way to try and eat your food, imagine your worst childhood picnic, that you are having in a horse pasture. Yeah there where that many flies. I think if the servers get some training, and the owner gets an attitude transplant, and perhaps a screened in porch, I would give it another shot. No probably not. On the plus side it gave us something to talk about for an hour as we headed home.

We went in in the afternoon and looked at the dinner menu, I'm on a special diet and was told no problem we have all the ingredients so they can accommodate you... Went back at 4:30 and only three tables of people were dinning.. and asked if they could make something for me and was told no... I asked if I could have wild rice, broccoli, and a salad at least because they have it in the menu and was told no.. so I had the Thai salad.., which wasn't very good and I was still hungry.. my guy had the Salmon Dinner that was dry and the broccoli looked like it was floating in water to long and some of it was rotten. I was there last year for dinner while staying in the park and it was wonderful and everyone was so nice and accommodating... I don't know if the owners are burnt out or doesn't care anymore..., such a shame cause it is the only dinner place right now... and they could do much better... I've been in the restaurant business for over thirty years and would never tell the customers no.. we won't be back. Sorry for a bad review. 10/4/22

Sugar Salt & Malt Restaurant in Baker, NV is a place to drive right on by. The price of dinner is over price for what you get. I had a 6 ounce Ribeye with baked potato and green beans. I will tell you I have to have gluten-free and dairy free options. They followed that requirement. The potato was very small, it would fit in the palm of your hand. The green beans were over cooked. I have never seen a 6 ounce ribeye steak. It was a large percentage of fat and grizzle. My wife had the salmon. It was over cooked on the ends and raw in the middle. When mentioned to the server, he replied, "I'm sorry." Nothing was done about it. We decided to cut our loss and go elsewhere for dessert. The price for the food doesn't match the the quality. I would have given them a 1 star, but they got two for trying to meet my requirements. I wish we would have gone to the other choices in town, even if it would have been having a repeat meal. The other choices provide a better meal. Don't waste your time and money on Sugar Salt and Malt Restaurant.

Had a great dinner after a day exploring the caves and trails of the GBNP. Had great smoked brisket with Mac and cheese. The desserts were very nice too, with an array of cookies and ice creams. I'd go again if in the area.

COFFEE!!! What a wonderful surprise. We were at the main visitor center for Great Basin National Park and it was closed on Sunday so we decided to explore the nearby town of Baker. We happened upon this lovely place with great coffee. I had an iced mocha and my husband had an iced coffee. Such a treat with really friendly staff to boot.

Had an absolutely fantastic dinner at this restaurant - the steak was definitely needed after long day of hiking, and the server was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the park. The dessert was great too. I just had to stop by for breakfast too before I left the area!

Next time you visit #Great Basin National Park, EAT HERE. As a matter of fact, make this your destination and pay the park a visit while in town. It's that good! We discovered this gem when my sig-other ordered a simple little individually wrapped coffee cake at a nearby restaurant. Expecting the usual "meh" mass-produced dried out quick bread, we were BLOWN AWAY at first bite. Folks, this stuff is something special. As with any outstanding food, there were multiple layers of deep flavor and texture, clearly from quality ingredients. We immediately asked to meet the mastermind and were pointed to "the newly painted building" at the other end of town, from which the pastries were delivered. So naturally, we put our park visit on hold and went straight there. The restaurant was clean, spacious and well-lit and the staff made us feel like they'd known us for years. (They we're also masked up.) Unfortunately, we didn't get to meet the masterminds, as they were in town getting supplies. Nevertheless, our takeaway was a great cup of coffee, several days worth of goodies and an inspiring story behind this business. Oh, and most importantly, smiles on both our faces. From what I understand, they're in the process of expanding their menu and offering a full-service bar (it looks cool!). So get in before the word gets out, folks. You can thank me later. ;)

Considering the we were in the middle of nowhere in a town that is 2 blocks long, the restaurant exceeded all of our expectations. The deco was very pleasant and our waiter was a pleasure. The food and drink selection was great.

What a nice little place in Baker! This restaurant has high quality cuisine and great ambience. The staff are amazing and treat you like a friend. There is inside and outside dining and incredible bar. The menu is small but caters towards high end food. I had the salmon and it was flaky and tender. The hubs had the steak with these amazing bacon and jam green beans-to die for. If you visit Great Basin NP, stop here!

This restaurant is a treasure! My husband and I were in the area, hiking at Great Basin National Park. We had an amazing dinner at Sugar Salt and Malt, and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Phenomenal restaurant! They have the best espresso in over 100 miles and a great dinner menu to boot. It's a must stop for your visit to Great Basin!

The food was really really good. Chicken parm moist and delicious. Great staff and welcoming service. Relaxing atmosphere. Waitress very sweet and efficient. Highly recommend 10/10.

Had the Korean Beef and it was delicious! The portion was shared able if you're not too hungry and want to leave room for dessert. The food tasted like a homemade meal. Great way to fuel up after a long day in the national park!

What a gem this place is! Who'd have thought you could sit down for a fresh, fast, and friendly gourmet meal in Baker, Nevada! We thought we were dreaming with every delicious bite. I'm not kidding...the food was some of the best we've had. Highly recommended!

If you are visiting Great Basin National Park, you must go here for dinner! I had the pesto pasta, and it was delicious. Also, the ice cream sandwich for dessert was great. The service was also good, with our waiter being very friendly. We even participated in trivia night with locals, who along with staff, were so very welcoming. Definitely worth the stop, and I highly recommend eating here!

Lovely restaurant with upscale decorations and furnishings, delicious hand made gourmet food, great service. Had lunch and dinner here on a recent trip to Lehman Caves & Great Basin National Park. We had turkey and brie panini, pumpkin spice latte, breakfast burrito. Amazing food! For dinner, bread basket, cranberry pecan salad with salmon, steak/baked potato/roasted green beans. Fabulous! Our bottle of wine 1924 was delicious. Owners are twin chef sisters & they know how to do food! This is the only restaurant open at the end of October. Glad we found it--there isn't anything comparable for miles and miles!
