A Seafood Haven: Fresh, Flavorful, and Unforgettable We recently dined at Bakfickan, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The restaurant is a true gem for seafood lovers, offering an variety of dishes that celebrate the freshness and natural flavors of the ocean. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a view on st. Karin’s ruins. The service was top-notch. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, ensuring that our glasses were always full and our needs met promptly. The star of the show was, of course, the seafood. Every dish we ordered was cooked to perfection. The octopus was tender and flavorful. For the main course, we shared a dish of steamed mussels and crayfish, which was nothing short of spectacular. The mussels were plump and juicy, simmered in a rich, aromatic broth that was perfect for soaking up with crusty bread. The crayfish were succulent, with a delicate sweetness. The portions were generous, and the presentation was elegant without being pretentious. The quality of the food and the overall dining experience make it well worth the cost. If you're a fan of seafood, Bakfickan is a must-visit. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just in the mood for some fantastic fish, this restaurant delivers on all fronts. I'll definitely be returning to explore more of their menu.

Super nice, cool vibes, quite relaxed atmosphere, friendly service (unlike in a couple other places on the island), excellent lamb and sauce. Will recommend! Lamm & fjällröding, både var perfekt! Tusen tack!

Best seafood dishes with very affordable price. I wish I can try out all their dishes. I ordered the cod & shrimp dish and my hubby had the shrimp on toast. The wine & beer selection were great too.

Our experience in Visby was that the food was spectacular. Bakfickan was no exception. Definitely make a reservation here. Everything was flavorful and delicious. The veggie accompaniments were amazing. The after meal candies were salted licorice.

I could not even stop myself from digging in before I made pictures. The pickled Herring was a meal I always dreaded to try, but it was deliciously smooth texture and against the expectation the taste was delicate and playful. The in Gotland stout prepared crayfish were a lot of work to eat, as it was my first time eating whole crayfish, but the simple yet special taste combined wonderfully with the garlic mayonnaise on the toast. And at last the Gotland classic Safronricecake with Gotland Dewberry jam ended a little wonderful evening journey.

Ordered the shrimp on toast for entree and moules frites for main course. Absolutely delicious. The freshly baked gluten-free bread is among the best I've ever had. The portions were generous and service pretty good. ++Shrimp ++Glutenfree Bread ++Portions +Price -Pre-dinner cocktails were expensive

Yelp
Seafood is the only form of meat here, but that's ok because they know how to prepare it. We dined here in a warm summer afternoon and enjoyed the scenery of the ruins and people watching. The service was professional and friendly. For our starter we had the Toast Skagen. Oh my was the toast addictive. I wish there was more, but it was covered in the ample portions of shrimp and dill sauce. For our main course, we had the butter fried pike-perch. It was so flakey, moist and tender. The diced rhubarb was such a surprise love for me. The crunch and slight bitterness was the perfect combo for the fish. For dessert we had the Saffranspannkaka. I've never had it before so I wasn't sure what to expect. The actual pancake was odd, but I loved the whipped cream and jam and that's what saved it for me. I don't anticipate being back in the area anytime soon, but if I am, I know where I'm dining.

Yelp
The restaurant is conveniently located next to the main square. We arrived a few minutes after they opened and there was a line. There was also a line when we left. Luckily, we didn't have to wait long and were seated outdoors. The main reason why I wanted to come here was because I wanted to try Toast Skagen (Swedish starter) and Gotland pancake (a dessert from the island). Local beer from Gotlands Bryggeri is also served here. Bread was given to us in a paper bag. It had two types of bread including crisp bread. I decided to order two starters in place of a main course. Toast Skagen is toast topped with shrimp salad made with dill and mayonnaise. While I mostly enjoyed it, I wasn't able to finish it because it was too much mayonnaise for me. My other starter was a tartare. I usually can't resist tartare when I see it on the menu. I liked the fish, but didn't care for the leek mayonnaise on the dish. Unfortunately, I was full and didn't have room for dessert. If you find yourself in Visby, I would recommend you dine here!

Yelp
Nice spot in visby's main square. Bonus points for the cute bartender (think it was a Thursday evening) with great wine recommendations while we waited for our table. Food was a bit salty, but the location, staff, and ambiance are great.

Yelp
If I can marry a restaurant, Bakfickan is who I'm going to marry. I swing by for dinner on Tuesday night during low season, I didn't have a reservation, but the waitress said I can sit at outside table, it was a bit cold, but I'm glad I stayed, because it was one of the best meals I had in Sweden. Both the Bakfickans sillröra på smörstekt Gotlandslimpa (Pickled herring, sour cream & onions on local bread) and Bakfickans fisksoppa med aioli (Bakfickan's fish soup w/ aioli) are just oustadning...I LOVE it! Friendly service and good beer selection. Come here if you are in Visby.

Yelp
Went there after seeing so many positive reviews on Yelp and Tripadvisor. We walked in on a evening in July without a reservation, but luckily were able to find outdoor seats for the 2 of us + 1 baby in his baby car. The fish dishes we ordered were nicely prepared, and they did taste good, except.. that they tasted a bit too salty. But we've been experiencing the feel of "too much salt" in several restaurants in Denmark and Sweden, so I assume that's not a biggy for others?

Yelp
Walked in on a chilly night in late September with no reservation, maybe 8pm. They were packed. Host suggested we walk outside for a bit until a table was ready. About 20 mins later we were seated. We had the fish stew which was delightful. Cooked perfectly. We also had the baked Halibut with fried rooted vegetables. The fish roe added a level saltiness to dish which created the perfect balance with the Halibut. Another amazing dish. Had a couple of Wisby brews as well. Well priced, cozy atmosphere, attentive waitstaff. Would happily return.

Yelp
We stopped in for dinner on a Wednesday night with no reservation and we were lucky to get a table right away. We started with the asparagus starter and it was perfectly tender and delicious. For mains we had the rainbow trout and fish stew - both were great. The staff were clearly busy but were still appropriately attentive to our needs. Wine selection was excellent and accompanied the food selection very well. The place was ting and a bit noisy due to a larger party but this contributed to the festive atmosphere. This was one of the best meals we had in Sweden and definitely the best we had in Visby. I will highly recommend this to anyone I know heading to this area.

Yelp
Great place for classic Swedish cuisine right in the heart of Visby. Both my appetizer and main course were great, although a bit salty. They serve local beer for the Gotlands Bryggeri. Great outdoor seating. I got sat at a communal table, so I got to chat with the locals. Good, prompt service.

Yelp
Best value for authentic Swedish food on the square/plaza. Great 5-star restaurants combine aesthetic physical site, high quality food and value. Add great hostess and service and one can accomodate Bakficken's tiny physical site and seating limitations.

Yelp
Small place. Needed reservation even in April. Very accommodating. Had delicious fish soup. Friend had very good fried herring with lingonberries and marinated cucumber sides. Had glass of a good Italian red wine. They have GF bread and most of menu could be had GF.

Yelp
We found this place in the free tourist magazine that was handed out when boarding the ferry to Gotland. We chose it since it had good reviews and was mentioned in the White Guide. The food was really good (dinner) and the restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere. Why not a five then? Well, when we were there is was quite chilly in the restaurant, noisy and the staff kept running into my chair all the time. We would definitely come back on a warm summer night when it's less crowded.

Yelp
Upon the recommendation of a local resident we had the fried Baltic herring and mashed potatoes. It was outstanding! For a simple dish of what amounts to "Swedish Comfort Food" it was one of the best meals I've ever had. We sat outdoors and enjoyed watching our fellow tourists meander through the square, next to the old cathedral.

Yelp
Tiny place with excellent seafood and service. I got the fried scallops entree and my husband got the fish soup. Both had really good flavor. This is gourmet dining at reasonable prices. Be sure to make a reservation. We tried one night and were unable to get in, so made a reservation for the next evening.

Yelp
Not only do they have an authentic and unapologetically fish centric menu... The kindness of the wait staff and the calm atmosphere is a big draw here. The restaurant interior is styled to be a seaside fish stand - but with big city sophistication in its choices of food/flavor combining on the food menu as well as on the wine menu. We had the delightful scallops - yum! My husband had the fish soup, also good. We were celebrating our anniversary in Visby, where we were married many years ago. We also had the misfortune of forgetting my husband's favorite cap under his seat. We hurried back the next day but they were closed, tragedy! We called later when we had returned to the U.S. and they said - yes, they'd found the cap and then proceeded to OFFER to send it to us! I was shocked and pleased, I hope that 13 years don't lapse between now and our next visit to gorgeous Gotland and our new favorite restaurant Bakfickan!
