The Best Places to Eat and Drink in NYC This Summer

"A vegetarian South Indian cafeteria-style cafe on a sprawling temple campus in Central Jersey where crisp, pliant dosas (plain, masala, mysore) are standby favorites, alongside weekend-only pesarattu, pakoras, tangy bisi bele bath, and cooling dahi vada." - Alan Sytsma, Beth Sacca

Chintan Pandya’s Grub Street Diet

"A highly regarded temple café located inside a Sri Venkateswara Temple; the reviewer calls it outstanding and checks in on it as a nearby, dependable source of South Indian fare when home in New Jersey." - Chris Crowley

We had the Mysore Dosa, Mirchi Bajji, Veg Pakora, Dahi Wada and Boondi Laddu. The food was delicious and tasted home cooked. The cafeteria is attached to the temple, on a lower level. We went on a weekend afternoon around 3 so there was hardly any wait for the food and lots of seating available.

Authentic South Indian Delights at an Unbeatable Price!" Balaji Temple Cafe is a hidden gem for South Indian food lovers! Their dosa, idly, and vada are simply outstanding—crispy dosa, soft idlis, and perfectly fried vadas, all served with flavorful chutneys and delicious sambar. The quality is top-notch, yet the prices are incredibly reasonable, making it a fantastic value for money. If you're craving authentic and satisfying South Indian cuisine, this place is a must-visit!

This cafe serves all fresh South Indian delicacies. Dosa is great. On Sunday you get some special items also. And it’s quite crowded. Long lines of devotees for food. Good portions are served for many snacks items. Tea and coffee are plenty to drink. Sambar is always hot and 2 type of chutneys available. A must visit for every devotee to experience good food.

The best south indian breakfast I ever had. Everything is delicious and my personal favourite is pongal and everything is so affordable.

For the price it's decent enough I suppose, get what you pay for, clean enough environment and service and wait time is good. Although, sambar and poppyseed mix was rather flavorless and watered down for me. Dosa was rather dry and not fluffy at all. Bit of a letdown.

This is a review of the canteen (cafeteria) inside Balaji temple. after Darshan, I guess one must visit the cafeteria, I loved their tamarind rice & Pongal. you can find many options on the menu and I guess prices - that's shocking, none of the items are above $5 and I don't know how they are managing it ( I guess it's a non-profit cafe). in this inflation time, how one can sustain providing quality food under $5? We ordered Pongal, tamarind rice, Bisibelbath, samosa, Lassi, Mysore masala dosa. Loved their Pongal, simple yet great taste. there is an option for to-go as well. Same old system: Order at the counter (there are 2 counters), get a token number, go to the food counter, give the coupon, and collect your food. ample seating arrangement. On Weekends- the cafeteria gets full and there could be waiting for ordering, and collect your food. Coat checking, water, and bathroom facility are there.

One of the best hindu south Indian temple in Bridgwater NJ. Highly recommend to visit with family and friends and specially with kids. They have enough space for parking 🅿. This temple is very popular for south Indian food 🍲 restaurant in side of temple. You can enjoy food outside curbside too. They offer puja and also new car 🚙 puja ceremony. Very spiritual place. They have small shop to purchase all religions pooja iteams. Must visit in week days to avoid wait time.

For South Indian food this is the place to go. Due to high demands, the place is usually crowded and on festival days it’s even more. The delay is a natural consequence of high crowd.

Yelp
Balaji Temple Cafe serves South Indian comfort food such as idly, vada, dosa, sambar, lassi, and samosas offered in an informal setting. Doesn't accept reservations and serves vegan dishes too. No Dine-In After 8:15 PM (Takeout only). Timings are Monday thru Friday from 5.30 PM to 8:30 PM. Saturdays, Sundays, Festivals and Special Days from 9:30 AM to 8:30 PM. Great spot inside the mandir with pocket friendly menu. Tasty food with various options available. After Darshan, one must visit their cafeteria, I loved their tamarind rice, bisibelabath and pongal. You can find many other options on the menu. Menu is all vegetarian. There is an option for to-go as well. Order your food at the counter, there are two counters available, get a token number, go to the food counter, give the coupon and collect your food. Ample seating arrangement inside. Coat checking, free water and bathroom facilities are nearby. Plenty of free parking in the premises. Affordable and reasonably priced.

Yelp
Cafe run by volunteeers in one of the most prestigious temples in USA . This temple is very famous and good . But the quality of food has decreased and price has increased so much . Sambar is too watery and chutney is average . I'm not complaining temple food , but if they charge it at restaurant price , it should be good . Service is good . I actually like their sweets . Very delicious . Overall we like the temple but the cafe is average .

Yelp
Very good South Indian vegetarian food. The food is very filling and affordable. I will recommend the masala dosa and vada for anyone new to South Indian food. They also provide complimentary unlimited sambar, which is an Indian soup.

Yelp
A hidden local secret for Dosas, especially within few miles radius of Basking ridge, Bridgewater located within the first floor of Hindu temple. You don't need to visit the temple to go to the cafeteria, by the way. The cafe opens by 5:30/6 and serves freshly made Dosas, idlis, pakoras, Pongal and tamarind rice and Samosas. The weekend menu is extensive and the cafe is open for both lunch and dinner. It's a self serve cafeteria and folks volunteer to serve you so don't expect an amazing service, but food is pretty inexpensive and good. This has been our weekly go to place when we crave delicious South Indian food within 10 mins of drive, with the benefit of showing reverence to the Hindu gods. Lots of high chairs for the kids and the mango lassi and chai is must for summer evenings
