13 Best Beaches in Maui, From Quiet Coves to Surfing Strongholds | Condé Nast Traveler

"Located near historic Paia Town on Maui’s North Shore, Baldwin Beach is extremely family-friendly with bathrooms, showers, barbecues, picnic tables, a covered pavilion, and lifeguard stations, and it even has a "Baby Beach"—a sheltered shallow pool created by a large reef on the western tip that’s perfect for keiki." - Kat Chen

Google
Beautiful beach and they’re turtles here. I had to zoom in on the pictures so I wouldn’t disturb them. There’s plenty swimming nearby also. They have sun tanning lotion by the restroom too.

Google
Fantastic Sandy Beach with rolling crashing waves.. Great for your boogie board.. or for a nice long walk in the surf. I was just there on a Friday afternoon and there was lots of people playing volleyball. There was a large group of about 35 people playing the drums.. it was quite enthralling to watch. Eventually, a large throng of people started to show up dancing up a storm.. I left when the sun was going down.. I guess that's when most people were showing up.. it could have been quite a party.. The parking area was over full and there were 50 plus cars that were on the highway.. So if you like to party on Friday nights on the beach.. this might be the place. It seems quite calm the rest of the time.

Google
PROS: - Restrooms & showers - Lots of parking - You still get nice sunset views & colors over the West Maui Mountains CONS: - Typically windy north shore weather - Water is choppy and full of currents - Not great for swimming - Erosion has swallowed up the beach and pavilion

Samir B.

Google
Nice beach with easy free parking. Some great trees to seek shade and lovely views of the mountains to the left while you swim!

Marcela Z.

Google
Pretty beach where you can find the spot of your preference. Carefully take wonderful baths there.

Jason T.

Google
Gorgeous location. The far right end of the beach is sheltered by reefs enough for the kids to play in the water.

Shawn K.

Google
Stunningly beautiful beach. Bathrooms and shower available. Some shady areas when a sun break is needed.

Zac T.

Google
Amazing beach to sit and swim at. Looking to boogie board? This is a great spot to start. Great waves, not the best snorkeling. Life guards on duty, and the beach is long with plenty of room to spread out. Defiantly a must stop at during your stay on Maui.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday late morning in June. Winds were very strong. I felt like I was being sand blasted. We set up by a tree to get some shade. Where we were, there was a lot of ants. They started swarming is as soon as we set up. It was a nice quiet beach. We saw a lot of older people around. Not as many children. The sand is course. Made up of shells and pebbles, but parts of the shore has fine soft sand. Overall a nice beach. Maybe we just came on an unusually windy day.

Yelp
This wasn't my favorite but the kids loved it. I just didn't like that the rocks or shells were hard and sharp. I also got stung by a jelly fish so be careful where you play in the water. It's pretty and you can park next to parking lot next to the beach.
google avatar

Long D.

Yelp
Expansive beach with plenty of parking. Lifeguards and restrooms. You can see turtles here too. I preferred the south end with some small cove and shades. Wind is strong and surf can be high at time. Close to Paia to meet your dining or shopping needs. Spectacular views.
google avatar

Larry L.

Yelp
Mauis best Ohana Keiki beach on island. Not far from Paia. Also lots of local shops in the area. Bathrooms. Heavy wind everyday around 2:30th. A must visit.
google avatar

Vivian A.

Yelp
This is a great beach. We came on a Tuesday around 10am and still lots of parking in the parking lot. It was windy when we went: the waves were really active so it was great for my 9 and 11 year old to body surf or boogie board. There's a small cove off to the right from the parking lot with lots of trees for shade and a little cove for little ones to swim. Around 3pm, that area was like a turtle highway. First we saw one, then another, then it was like turtle commute time. Around that cove is also a good place to snorkel to see schools of fish. Walk over the cove and on you'll see a ton of turtles feeding on the rocks. We had a great time here. Just be careful if it's windy, the sand will kick up lots but it makes great boogie boarding surf.

Yelp
This is my personal favorite beach in Maui. We loved it so much we came here twice during our visit. There's plenty of parking with easy access to the beach. There's restrooms and there's a spot to rinse. The water here is amazing!!!! It's soooo beautiful! There's also lifeguards here on duty.
google avatar

Marshall G.

Yelp
This is a great spot for a shade beach day. There are different trees that you can find your niche. There is also public shade area with a roof and tables. A very clean beach bathroom. Kinda rare. And a clear water spray station to clear the sand and salt. We had company, our sister n law was in layover between big island and the desert island, Las Vegas. So we subtracted time for TSA and boarding and squeezed in a pic nic in the trees here. Poke from foodland, fresh pineapple and grapes. Hummus , crackers and spicey cheese. She was delighted, we shared our Aloha and got to the gate in time. Mmmmm did i mention it was close..... In the morning it's a good spot for a boogie board or bodysurfing.

Yelp
Baldwin Beach is a bit of a departure from the typical white sand beaches across Maui-- surrounded by (pine?) trees, grittier sands, gusty winds, it feels closer to Santa Cruz than Hawaii. The water is clearer than SC, of course (thank god...), and the coast much larger and more spacious. Anyways, we were constantly amazed by the beach diversity across the island. We spent most of our time at Baby Beach, closer to the west side of Baldwin. Waves were gentle and clear enough to swim and play. Not crowded at all, seems less popular in comparison to other beaches. Plenty of shade to share. Seems to be more built out for community events and usage, given the large parking lot, covered pavilion, rinse stations, and functional restrooms. At the time of visit, we didn't see any turtles (March 2023), but the grand, expansive view is more than enough reason to visit.
google avatar

Staci W.

Yelp
Beautiful beach with plenty of parking, bathroom, shower to rinse sand off! Lifeguard is on duty and warning signs out for anything going on. There is even some shady spots for a break from sun. Water and view are wonderful. Quiet spot!
google avatar

Alissa J.

Yelp
On our trip to Hawaii, we stopped at this beautiful beach in Maui. There was plenty of parking, clean public beach bathroom with outdoor showers and a picnic shelter. This beach also had a lifeguard on duty. It was fairly secluded and had lots of shaded spots to relax under.
google avatar

Kris L.

Yelp
Great beach, not too crowded and with some shade as well as lots of turtles! You can walk for almost 3 miles round trip if you start or end in Paia and go to Baby Beach.

Yelp
Having grown up on Maui, I feel like sometimes we take for granted what's in our own backyard... constantly seeking for something new, something different. I tend to default to south side for beach days and I sometimes end up forgetting about little gems like Baldwin Beach Park despite passing by at least handful of times a month. After a failed attempt at visiting another beach (it's not what I remembered it to be from hanabata days, lol)... my family and I ended up here as I wanted to catch the sunset and enjoy the warm summer breeze after a hectic week. Although it was just for a brief moment, it was beautifully relaxing and made me appreciate this place we call 'home' just a little bit more. We are honestly so lucky to have big, expansive beaches like this where the sand is soft and the views are priceless. There no homes, no buildings in sight on this 1 mile stretch of white sand beach. Best enjoyed when the trade-winds are down (mornings are perfect). Otherwise, it does tend to get very windy. When I swim, I normally swim at the west end of Baldwin at what locals call 'Baby Beach' which is perfect for the littles to wade in and enjoy the water as the reef protects the area from the shore breaks. According to my fellow Yelp Elite Vince N., the east end is pretty nice as well! There is a covered pavilion with a few tables if you'd like to host a party and the parking lot can accommodate quite a few cars. If it's full, there are lots of other areas to park. People mention the.area can attract a sketchy crowd. Given the proximity to Paia, it's kind of expected, but I didn't experience that at all and felt safe. I would just exercise vigilance and be very aware of your surroundings, no matter where you are.

Yelp
What a beautiful beach and park on Maui's north shore. The colors are hypnotic and soothing and the sound of the waves... but the strong winds really make it tough to relax since all your "stuff" wants to blow down the beach. Hold onto your hat and beach toys! Great set up for gatherings and parties, with a central pavilion, showers and bathrooms. Plenty of free parking. Long stretch of gorgeous soft whitish sand set against the turquoise water. Walk, swim, play and enjoy this lovely spot. Bring your dog but please pick up after him and yourself. No camping allowed!
google avatar

CJ J.

Yelp
Gorgeous beach and views. Too rough for kids to swim but if it was a calmer day would be great. Very picturesque.
google avatar

De A.

Yelp
Gorgeous; Absolutely dripping with beauty! Such natural beauty of the colors of the water and it is so warm.... wonderful! Yes, there are a variety of people here, but honey, many of them are local, so if you don't feel "at home", you ain't! Truthfully, there may be some sketchiness, but there are indeed some people just trying to make it in life. Idk the solution, but prayers and blessings are always welcomed. Just relax, lovely vibes and so many people are just trying to have a good day. Showers are not totally working,.. just one side. But the water is warm, beautiful, and clear. So amazing! I think it's one of the better beaches...and better than Kihei... and, I live in Kihei!

Yelp
Stunning white sand beach on the island of Maui with blue waters and waves. While in Maui 2 days on NCLs Pride of America, my husband and I spent late morning/early afternoon at Baldwin Beach and it did not disappoint. We took an uber, however, parking appeared free and plenty of it. The beach has hardly anyone on it except a few locals. Lots of room to spread out and have a little section to yourself. It's very quiet and relaxing to lay here and listen to the sound of the waves. We took snorkeling gear, however, it wasn't the best place to snorkel. Waves were a little rough and no fish in the water. On the far end, there is rock where I saw some people fishing and shade from the trees if you are looking to escape the sun for a little. There is no where to rent chairs or umbrellas (bring everything with you). If you plan to be here a while, you'll also want to pack a cooler with some cold water and snacks since there isn't anywhere to purchase food/drink. The beach gets a bit windy, so be careful when laying that sand doesn't blow in your eyes. I heard if you get here early enough (we didn't) you will run into some sea turtles who sleep on the beach at night into the early morning. Sounds lovely. I would recommend Baldwin Park beach to all you fellow Yelpers looking for a relaxing afternoon on the beach, free of charge.

Yelp
Water's got some kick here. I think that's to be expected for the north side of Maui. But it's still gorgeous water and sand. There was a single lifeguard on duty. Plenty of parking, whether it was in a lot, grass, or make-your-own-spot. There were questionable locals around, but nothing worse than the beaches in California.
google avatar

Janet I.

Yelp
There is nothing but absolute breathtaking views everywhere you look. We came to this beach because a local told us this is the place to see the green sea turtles come on to the beach. We waited but none came so we have to go seek them out elsewhere.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Great beach near the airport. My husband and I killed time here and had a beer while sitting in the shade and enjoying the waves.
google avatar

Amaria A.

Yelp
One of my favorite beach in Maui! My husband and I stopped here on our way to Hana around 8:00 am. It was quiet, not crowded and the nice blue water was so beautiful and clear. The beach seems pretty big and offer nice views on the coasts around. There are restrooms available and a good size parking.
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
Nothing but beautifulness here! It was a bit windy so be prepared for some sand hitting on you...lol The place was clean and not crowded. The bathroom area was not the cleanest but had tissues. It also had good amount of parking spaces. I read some reviews saying this place has some sketchy folks, which was true, but we didn't feel uneasy or anything.
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
Nice place for naturalism....a must destination on this island.. A lot of local real human beings
google avatar

Vince N.

Yelp
OMG, I can't believe it's been a year since I went to BBP. This time I actually went in the ocean, and, contrary to my last review which said it's not great for swimming, turns out it is! The water looks choppy but the reef keeps the big waves out, providing for great swimming and lounging. And a big thank you to my friend and fellow Yelper Shawn C for introducing me to the east side of BBP which was even more awesome! CON: Some of the beach patrons can be, no wait, ARE shady. The covered pavilion that's filled with picnic tables also houses some of these questionable people. While I haven't had any encounters, it just doesn't feel like a safe place.
google avatar

Lindsey G.

Yelp
So beautiful and clean for a park beach! I will probably be back during my trip! Had trash cans and water spout to get sand off
google avatar

Raia B.

Yelp
I've been walking Baldwin beach since I was a baby. It's beautiful. On one end there is a shallow reef-protected area that we call "baby beach." It is accessible through spreckel's ville or you can walk down to that end from Baldwin beach park. Also if you are feeling like adventuring a bit, you can walk down the other way all the way to Paia Bay. After a bug swell there will be piles of shells on the beach, which is so nice to dig through. It's a great family & dog beach.
google avatar

Jenni T.

Yelp
This is the way a beach should be! Baldwin Beach Park was my favorite beach that we visited on Maui. Sure, we only visited a handful of beaches, but this one was great. When we were on Maui I had arraigned to have professional pictures taken of my Husband, Stepchildren and I and so the photographer picked this beach to meet at in the morning to take them. When we arrived a little before 8:00am, the beach was nice and quiet with only a couple other people walking around. The beach has a huge white sand area that goes for at least a mile down the shoreline. There are rocks on one end of the beach that you can climb around on, and a large grass area as well which you can picnic or play on. There are bathrooms and a few covered picnic tables and a lifeguard station which had a few lifeguards working the morning we were there. The parking lot is a good size with room for plenty of cars. This definitely looks like the beach to stop at to get away from tourists! The exit is hard to find off the road because it's not marked. It's right outside Paia so make sure to keep your eyes out for the grass and the palm trees because it sneaks up on you. We also ended up seeing a sea turtle and two rainbows for the hour or so that we were at the beach. So beautiful! I would definitely come back to Baldwin Beach Park next time I am in Maui. The waves can get a little rough sometimes but they were fine when we were there. It was very windy though so I would prepare for that. My hair was atrocious!
google avatar

Brianna S.

Yelp
Although this beach may be known to some, it still feels like its own little hidden gem in Paia. I almost don't even want to review it! The less people here tha bettah. ;D Similar to Paia beach, but more secluded and with the clearest waters I've seen on Maui. The waters here are literally turquoise. This is the perfect beach to just chill out, pack a lunch, and maybe bring your pups to. It is definitely not a beach to snorkel at, since there is no coral, and the waves aren't really big enough to surf. More of just to splash around in the water, swim and sit back and enjoy Maui brah!
google avatar

Jenn C.

Yelp
Gorgeous park - my friend loves this place and I wish I had gone here every day when I was in Maui - it was very relaxing and beautiful. There is a small lagoon like an olympic sized pool (maybe bigger) that is great for having a swim. Topless is an option but custom dictates you throw a towel over your boobies as families with small children walk by lest they be scarred for life seeing your nipples (or maybe it's the dad that is the issue?).
google avatar

Joel E.

Yelp
This if a great spot to relax. Parking is open and safe. There's a nearby restroom with shower to wash off sea water and sand. Beach is clean and water is pristine. A little windy and choppy waves but at the end there is a small protected cove where you can swim. You can snorkel at that end by the rocks. And this is where I was able to swim with 3 sea turtles. At the edge there's a small cliff which will connect to the next beach. Nice views from up there. You can watch the turtles feed by the rocks. It seems like you own the beach with only a handful of people here. Well, it's also because the beach is so wide. Plenty of area to run around and play in the sand. There's also a lifeguard on duty when we were there.
google avatar

Bridgett P.

Yelp
One of my favorite beaches to go to on the North Shore. What I love most about it is that there is plenty of parking.. Even on a Sunday, you may have to park a little ways away but you will most likely find a spot to park that isn't too far. The city bus also has a stop just down the road so that makes it accessible for those who do not have a vehicle. This beach offers beautiful blue water, showers, and plenty of space to run, walk, sit, play or relax. Lots of people come here with their dog, to run, to relax and just enjoy the view. Wind can pick up in the afternoon so it is advised to hit the beach in the morning. Also the water gets a little more active in the winter due to the winter swell. It's a beautiful place to spend the morning. I just got back from a nice run-followed by a swim. He water was clear, the parking was open and the people were rad, as usual.
google avatar

Brendon P.

Yelp
Easy parking for beach access with bathroom and rinse off stations. Beaches are very clean and the waters were clear.
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
Baldwin Beach is a very attractive beach located just outside of Pa'ia town. It has a bit of a reputation for being unsafe, due to the large number of party-crazed locals who always hang out here, but I think that reputation is completely undeserved. However, it wouldn't hurt to lock your car while it's in the parking lot, as per the posted signs. Although the restrooms always seem closed, there are lifeguards on duty. This is a popular spot for surfing as well as swimming. The view of Wailuku and the backside of West Maui is spectacular on a clear morning. The light here in late afternoon is also particularly beautiful. However, it can get extremely windy. You feel like you are being sandblasted, sitting in your beach chair.
google avatar

Sally T.

Yelp
Just gorgeous! We found this place by accident on the way to Paia Fish Market and ended up spending the morning and part of our afternoon here. You won't really find tourists here, which i liked, and the locals added an interesting mix. They aren't rude or anything, they just like to stare but you are half naked at the beach anyway. it was expected. just check out the picture, it speaks for itself. sigh :) so pretty.
google avatar

Sheri K.

Yelp
This officially became my favorite beach. This time, I parked in the main lot and walked all the way down the beach to the left. I walked through a foresty path with the beach to my right and the woods to my left. First of all, I ran into somewhat of a fishing spot. Is was a shallow water circular area protected by a wall of rocks. I think this was considered "Baby beach". As I kept walking, I looked to my left and saw a bunch of hippies hula-hooping! WTH??! Was a cool thing to see though. Kept walking and realized this would be a great camping location for my next trip to Maui! Next I came across a rounded out cove-like part of the beach. All of a sudden a bunch of people when there was just no one..weird, but cool. Turns out this is another topless beach frequented mainly by locals. It was very tempting to stop right there and swim, but I kept on walking. In front of me was at least another mile of vacant beach. I found my own little private spot for the day :) Best beach in Maui!!
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
This is a great stretch of beach to relax and enjoy the view. The parking lot is large. The beach is beautiful and not overly crowded, allowing us to find a great spot all to ourselves. Highly recommended stop if you're in Paia or on your way to Hana.
google avatar

Niki G.

Yelp
Baldwin Beach is a wonderful, long, wide, sandy beach park just outside of Paia. Fully equipped with lifeguards, bathrooms, showers, barbecues, picnic tables and a covered pavilion. During winter months, the main stretch of beach can have fairly large and regular shorebreak, so it becomes a popular destination for more experienced boogie-boarders.
google avatar

Kemi A.

Yelp
Don't come for the turtles, they may not be there and you'll be disappointed. Parking is close (and free)... And it's not too crowded (at least not when we went).... But as the sun sets, the crowd gets a little sketch... Really sketch.
google avatar

Kathy C.

Yelp
We found a perfect spot to take pictures. It is at the far end of Baldwin Beach where the black rocks are. In the center area, Baldwin Beach is perfect for swimming. They have a lifeguard. The area for picture taking has white, red and black sand and rocks all in one place. It is beautiful! We discovered this treasure the second time we visited Maui. When we went back, we had a hard time finding it, but now the location is embedded in my pictures so we will always know where to go.

Lena K.

Yelp
This is a beautiful beach on the East end. A definite Must See! Make sure to lock your car & don't leave anything inside. Some interesting characters hang around there....
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
Stunning beach! Crystal blue water, white sand, this is the place to be! Located near the quaint town of Paia, Baldwin Beach Park is an excellent place to enjoy the beach, take a dip and snorkel. Ideal for photo opps too! Came here with a group of friends and enjoyed swimming near the shoreline as waves can be a little unpredictable here. Lucky for us, there was an awesome lifeguard on duty. Next to the beach are restrooms, a shower and a cute little park. Enjoy a beach day and then head into Paia for shopping and some food, I recommend Flatbreads. Enjoy your time in Maui, MAHALO!

Paola L.

Yelp
This beach is gorgeous!!!!! The water is crystal clear but looks like the most beautiful shade of baby blue from a distance. It's super windy and the waves are choppy so if you're in the water you'll be wrestling the waves non stop! There were lots of places to set your stuff down and everyone respects your space. There was plenty of parking too. The beach also connects to baby beach. Great spot to relax and just watch the waves!
google avatar

Elyse D.

Yelp
The beach was nice. There is a soccer field right behind it. However, when we arrived there were a lot of homeless people at the beach so we decided to leave and try another beach. Plenty of parking, picnic tables, and restrooms.
google avatar

Tony G.

Yelp
Beautiful blue water with a nice beach with tree shade and ocean breeze. Parking is also great being close by and abundant. Water has powerful short waves and strong current. Seems like a beach for beach bums and smokers. Random sketchy people hanging out like Grand Theft Auto (video game) Pedestrians or laying out. Not recommended for families.
google avatar

Kalani B.

Yelp
Baldwin Beach is one of those places to check out, especially when the sun is about to go down. Because the way the sun starts to set behind the mountains and then along the water is gorgeous. Usually while in Paia, I'll park in the Public Parking and walk around town and then walk to Baldwin Beach. (about .7 miles away) Pros: Walking distance to parking lot Less than a mile from town Beautiful beach Can wade in the water (be careful when the waves pick up!) Gorgeous view Shower to wash off Cons: Restroom ...I'm pretty sure the girl in the stall next to me was doing drugs. I spotted a syringe and cord in her left hand while she exited the bathroom. There can be sketchy people hanging around. The last time I was there, a man was angrily yelling out loud or to himself. Not sure if anyone initiates contact but be careful anyway!
google avatar

Laurie T.

Yelp
The water is so beautiful and warm at this beach. The waves are so big and unlike anything i have ever seen. Really friendly people here and I will come back next yr.
google avatar

Diane E.

Yelp
WOW! So glad we decided to check this beach out. What a pleasant surprise when we pulled up (plenty of places to park) we were greeted by one of the most gorgeous picturesque water/beach scene. The color of the water was incredible..that multi-blue hues..and the long sandy white beach. The waves were a bit rough today..but I can see how it would be a great beach to take the family..lots of places for shades and big enough of a beach that you wouldn't feel crowded. Also since it's pretty darn close to the quaint town of Paia..you can walk into town (parish by can be a hassle to find in town) and catch a quick yummy lunch at the Flatbread Pizza and cool down with a gelato cone near by..and perhaps do some window shopping in town..great way to spend a day!
google avatar

Sean B.

Yelp
Great beach. Usually not too crowded, and also get plenty parking. Offers a great view of the North Shore, while also giving one a decent place to swim around. The outer breakwater keeps the majority of the waves out. Great place to chill with friends or go for a quick swim. Nothing bad to say about this beach. Definitely better than the average beach. Only downside might be that there isn't much to see under the water.
google avatar

Vince D.

Yelp
This little white beach is awesome. It gets a little windy, but it's very relaxing and great for picnics under the shade of a tree. Baldwin is popular with locals and tourists alike, but feels like a sleepy little secret.
google avatar

Sandra R.

Yelp
The water is warm!! It's such a beautiful beach especially to watch the sunset when the sun is down and you don't Have to worry about over tanning
