3 Best Day Trips in Bali | Condé Nast Traveler

"Bali Silent Retreat is exactly what it sounds like: no talking, no listening to music, just silence and the noises of nature. Nestled in the foothills of the sacred Mount Batukaru volcano and surrounded by rice fields and jungle, this retreat, an unforgettable experience, is in a world all its own. This is an especially great choice if you want to completely get away from it all—no phones or internet allowed." - Anna Chittenden

I’ve just finished three days at the Bali Silent Retreat, and I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of my life. I stayed in a deluxe cabin overlooking the rice fields—the sunrise views were absolutely breathtaking and are still vivid in my mind. Every morning, they leave a warm ginger tea outside your door, perfect for sitting quietly and soaking in the beauty of the place. The grounds are magical, from the crystal labyrinth to the forest trails—the energy is truly unmatched. And the food deserves its own chapter! Everything is fresh, full of flavor, and absolutely delicious. I’ve traveled the world tasting food, and this is without a doubt among the best I’ve ever had. The simplicity combined with flavor completely won me over. The outdoor shower was another highlight—showering under the open sky with the sounds of nature around you is an experience in itself. I will definitely be coming back in the future and am already recommending it to all my friends. Thank you, Bali Silent Retreat, for an unforgettable three days!

I had a fantastic experience at Bali Silent Retreat. The bed was comfortable, the food absolutely amazing 10/10, outdoor hot shower was beautiful, all the classes simple and stress-free, there were many activities (all optional) such as jungle walk, water meditation, hot springs etc, and all the staff were super friendly. Highly recommend if you need to disconnect from the world for a while!

I had such a beautiful time at Bali Silent Retreat. The place is just... peaceful in every way. Surrounded by rice fields, jungle, and silence, it really helped me slow down and reconnect. The people there are genuinely kind, gentle, and respectful. You can feel that the space is held with care. The food was delicious and nourishing, and the whole energy of the place felt safe and healing. If you’re looking for quiet, nature, and space to just be with yourself, I truly recommend it.

I had the absolute pleasure of booking a 3 night stay at Bali Silent Retreat from July 25-28th. It was the most humbling and rewarding experience and I highly recommend to anyone seeking a retreat away from the noise of the city (or an overthinking mind) . It gave me the opportunity to really truly and intentionally be in silence with myself, nature, and the beautiful land of Bali. I chose the single room and was amazed by the cleanliness and comfort. It was very modest accommodations that provided the basic necessities (i.e., towel, face cloth, bedding, robe for sleeping, mosquito net around bed, etc.). You could see (and feel) the amount of effort and care that was taken to ensure respect for the guests AND the natural habitat AND the environment. The focus on environmental sustainability and how we can use these practices within our own homes and places of work was very inspiring. I took part in the morning yoga on the second day and it helped me cultivate an open mindset and set the tone for mindful listening throughout the day. The food was absolutely incredible! We made our own tea using fresh plants and herbs and we washed our own dishes after meals. We were responsible for our things and I found that to be very humbling. There is a library where I borrowed and read How to Sit by Thich Nhat Hanh that was exquistely appropriate. Thank you to all of the Angels who cooked delicious, hearty, and healthy meals. You could taste the love. Thank you to all of the Angels who welcomed me to Bali Silent Retreat and treated me like family. You made me feel safe. Thank you to the founders of the retreat for creating this beautiful space for us to develop our meditation practice and sit in silence. Suksma. And most importantly, thank you to all of the sentient beings who granted me permission to let go and explore, wonder, and appreciate all they give. Endless waves of gratitude.

I really wanted to love this spot, but I honestly was super disappointed and ended up leaving two days early after only two nights. While I appreciated the beautiful grounds, it's incredibly overpriced for Bali and absolutely not worth the pricepoint. ||One of the main reasons I chose to stay here was for their daily yoga/meditation classes. I showed up to the yoga class on the first day to the teacher saying to the class "I'm not a yoga teacher, I'm just sharing what I know". It was genuinely the most confusing and disjointed class I have ever taken, and it genuinely felt like it was the teacher's first time ever doing yoga or trying to share it.||I was very excited about the buffet that everyone seemed to rave about. Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that if you don't get to the buffet EXACTLY at the time it opens, 90% of the food is gone and it doesn't get refilled. There also are no food warmers so all of the food is cold or room temperature. Dinner is served 4:30 to 6:30 so if you're not eating right at 4:30 you're getting cold food and the leftover scraps.||The hot springs was about a 10-minute drive away, but unfortunately the springs were not hot, kind of lukewarm temperature. My friend and I were finished after about 30 minutes, but the retreat bus only comds back two hours later so we ended up having to walk back to the retreat for almost an hour since we didn't want to wait another hour and a half.||It rained heavily during the second night, and the single rooms do not have enclosed doors. Even the dining area is open so there really is nowhere to go to get relief from the rain and the cold if it happens to rain during your stay.||In summary, this place is just way overpriced for what you get and you could have a way nicer self-led silent retreat at any other homestay in Bali.

BSR is a nice farm located in the sanctuary area surrounded by the rice fields. The bungalow view was beautiful and I appreciated the device-free policy. Atmosphere is calming and nurturing. But honestly speaking it was the most overpriced stay in my life, and it truly didn’t worth it. For 150$ per night you are expected to wash the dishes. The food was home-made, but nothing fab; and the territory where you can actually walk in nature is not as huge as they claim: All path is no more than 15 minutes on foot. Moreover, for that charge they do not even have professional yoga teachers — we got a lesson with a lady « sharing her best experience ». I’m all for that approach, however the pricing should be very different in such a case. Hot springs are nearby but so muddy that you won’t probably able so swim there. All in all I don’t think I would ever recommend this place, sorry.

I first visited the Bali Silent Retreat in 2022, spending 10 days there after leaving a demanding corporate job. I went seeking calm and healing from a toxic work environment — and I found exactly what I needed. It was the perfect place to unwind, reset, and reconnect with myself in a soulful sanctuary surrounded by nature.||I recently returned, this time in search of clarity as I stand at a crossroads in my career. Once again, the retreat worked its quiet magic. With a variety of optional activities (or the freedom to simply be), I immersed myself in journaling, reading, and deep reflection. I brought five books and finished them all!||Mealtimes became a daily highlight — the kitchen team crafts wholesome, nourishing, farm-to-table meals that feed the body and soul. I left feeling full of gratitude, more present, and ready to take on whatever comes next. I’ll return whenever my spirit calls for it.

I spent 4 nights at the retreat and overall a beautiful, calm, clean and thoughtful eco experience. Surrounded by mountains and rice fields. The food was amazing, home cooked vegetarian buffet 3 times a day. Amazing. Lots of variety. Impressive library, stunning grounds, although some parts looked a little overgrown uncared for. Lots of little touches that made the experience special. My only negative would be the overall vibe. All the guests seemed sad and no eye contact. Definitely a factor in deciding whether to return on not. My suggestion would be to create maps for local trails for walks or runs. Or run a daily lead walk offsite. The surrounds and rice fields are beautiful, would be great to be able to immerse in more. I was disappointed not be able to walk around the rice fields. The stretching classes are great, Roy was fantastic. But if you are used to daily exercise and workouts and then have to stop, you may feel a little lazy! Especially with all the beautiful food to consume.
