Cooking with Putu through Traveling Spoon was one of the most heartwarming and memorable experiences I had in Bali. From the moment she welcomed us into her traditional village home, it felt less like a class and more like being invited into a family gathering. Putu is not only a skilled cook, but also a fantastic storyteller. She started by walking us around her property, showing us the lush garden where she grows many of the ingredients we’d use—lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime, and more. Along the way, she shared stories about Balinese culture, village life, and the significance of food in local ceremonies. The cooking itself was hands-on, fun, and absolutely delicious. Putu’s warm humor and easygoing nature made the whole experience feel joyful and intimate. You’re not just learning recipes—you’re being immersed in a way of life. By the end, we sat down together to enjoy a feast we helped prepare, laughing like old friends. I left not only with new skills and full stomach, but also a genuine appreciation for Balinese hospitality and tradition. This experience is a must if you're in Ubud—it’s more than a cooking class, it’s a window into the heart of Bali.

We had an incredible time with Kadek and Ketut – it was so much more than just a cooking class! Kadek picked us up at 8:30 in the morning and took us to a wonderful local market, far off the tourist trail. He is calm, kind, and full of knowledge. He showed us many unique local products and explained everything in detail – it was a beautiful and authentic experience. After that, we visited his sister’s traditional Balinese family compound, where Kadek gave us deep insight into Hindu beliefs, house structures, and the importance of family temples and ceremonies. We learned so much about Balinese culture. Then we arrived at Kadek and Ketut’s home, where Ketut was already waiting for us with a beautifully prepared open kitchen overlooking the rice fields. All the fresh ingredients were attractively displayed – either homegrown or locally sourced. Before we started, they asked in detail about our preferences, allergies, and dietary needs and adjusted the menu accordingly. We were a family group and everyone got their own tasks – from chopping vegetables and fruit to preparing spices with a traditional mortar and pestle. As a welcome drink, we were served a freshly picked coconut – such a lovely touch! Together we prepared a full menu: appetizer, soup, several main dishes with rice, and a delicious dessert. Kadek and Ketut were warm, friendly, and very attentive throughout the entire class. The atmosphere was relaxed and joyful, and we felt truly welcomed in their home. The food was absolutely delicious, and the whole experience was deeply enriching – cultural, culinary, and human. Thank you so much, Kadek and Ketut – this was a highlight of our trip to Bali!

Amazing experience with Dewa! He picked us up from our hotel and took us on a tour of his village, explaining how they make things sustainable and giving us all sorts of insights into various topics, from palm sugar manufacture to traditional cultural practices. This culminated in a cooking class where, along with his family, he helped us create six very tasty and authentic dishes. He even gave us a handmade recipe book to record everything in. Dewa is very passionate about his village and really wants to show people his way of life, but is quite selective about when he does these sessions as he is wary of Keliki becoming victim to overtourism, like much of Bali. Therefore, make sure you try to book well in advance on the Traveling Spoon website, as there is no guarantee of availability! Overall, I can’t recommend this tour enough if you want a more authentic and spiritual experience to the ‘standard’ cooking classes offered in the Ubud area.

The cooking class was amazing. We (my wife and me) were picked up in our hotel from Ubud and Putus' husband drove us togheter with Putu to their traditional home. Putu explained the traditional housing on Bali and the meaning of their family temple, speaking really good English. After that she guided us through her garden, where she gave some information about the food growing there. Both, the information about the housing and the garden were quite right, not too long and not too short (we could ask her anything which was unmentioned).After that we started the cooking, she explained a lot on balinese cuisine and the tradition of the meals. During cooking, her sister-in-law and her niece assisted us. The whole experience was so amazing, we had so much fun while cooking and chatting, and we prepared 5 delicious meals. I can highly recommend going there. Thank you so much

Awesome chef with 35 yrs international food experience. Great relaxing views of padi fields, coconut palms, banana trees. Also high class accommodation BALI VIEW UBUD 8 units. Well worth a visit.

Absoultely worth the time and money. The experience begins with a walking tour of the farm, while the proprietor (Dewa) describes the history and present of the community. As you walk around, he picks the ingredients you'll be using for Part 2, the cooking class. The class itself is also pretty amazing. I've done a few of these in the past, and usually you get two or maybe three recipes. Dewa gave the two of us five. I also had expected that one of them would be Nasi Goreng, a national rice dish that's pretty easy to make. The recipes Dewa actually gave us were a bit more complicated, and we're very much looking forward to perfecting them at home.
