Negligence and poor training are apparent here. My wife and I had just checked in, exhausted, and wanted to lie down for a few minutes.
My wife pulled back the bedspread and plopped down. After a couple of moments, she sprung to her feet and yelled, 'The bed is wet!' I felt my side, which was dry. I reached over to her side and it was indeed wet. Worse yet, I smelled my hand. It was urine.
My wife's dress was wet as well.
I repeatedly called the front desk. No answer. I took the elevator down to the lobby, having to wait a long time because one of the elevators was inoperable.
I got to the lobby and found a long check-in line. I walked over to the concierge and told him what happened. "Sorry, I don't do room stuff. You have to wait in line."
I told him I wasn't going to wait in line and wanted to see a manager. He wrote down, 'Bed wet. Smells like urine. Room 1122', and walked into the back.
He came back and said, 'They're going to send up housekeeping'.
I told him I was not going to stay in that room and wanted another.
He told me I'd have to get in line and talk to one of the front desk clerks.
I insisted on speaking to the manager, so he went to get him.
A guy came out and asked, 'How can I help you?'
At this point, I'm pretty furious and said, 'He didn't tell you?'
The guy sheepishly replied, 'Yes, he told me your bed is wet and you want another room.' Why the hell come out and ask me how he can help, when he already knew?
He got me another room, and it was fine. That whole experience, however, was shameful.
From negligent housekeeping staff that either didn't change the sheets or didn't notice the wet bed, to the concierge who doesn't 'do room stuff', to the manager who acted like he didn't know why I wanted to see him, they showed little regard for customers, a lack of training or even common sense.
When I wrote them in reply to their customer survey, I got a response that seemed boiler-plate, that concluded by telling me my comments 'will be shared with the appropriate departments to ensure our service standards are addressed.'
I think the least they could have done was offer some compensation for cleaning my wife's dress, or comped a room. Something other than 'we'll share your comments'.
