Yelp
What a lovely place, wonderful food, and warm, friendly experience. Balthaz'Art is a casual, intimate, neighborhood place where locals feel at home, but two visitors from California, with barely passable french, were just as warmly welcomed. The food is very much of the fresh, local, seasonal school, a lighter, brighter version of regional southern french cuisine--fabulous. I had a salad of artichokes, peas, beets, and other greens, a main dish of perch (I think) and strawberries and creme fraiche for dessert, while my husband had asparagus gazpacho and a beef daube that they're very celebrated for--not unusual or tricky food, just really good. Beautifully, but not fussily, presented. Friendly advice on wine from our server (who also loaned me a warm wrap when I got chilly). The aperitifs, wine, and calvados for digestif kept our blood flowing nicely. We showed up without a reservation (you should make one) about 9 pm and they were able to seat us outside on a gorgeous spring night; inside, the restaurant feels like an old farmhouse, again lovely but not fussy, unpretentious but special. There were no other reviews in english so I'm gushing on to encourage english-speaking visitors to find their way there (you'll work off half your meal climbing the steep streets and stairs to the top of the Croix-Rousse neighborhood--there's a killer view from the terrasse). And it's not even particularly expensive. For me, even though this is not a self-important high temple of cuisine, it was really a 5-star experience all-round.
