I had a mostly fine time here that took a weird turn at the end, which is why this is a 3 star review and not 4. I stayed in the Honu Suite, which was spacious and nice, with a kitchenette, small dining table and balcony looking out on the bay. Because I was still on California time, I was awake to see the spectacular sunrise over the bay from the balcony -- just awesome.
The outdoor shower takes a little getting used to. There's a screen for privacy, though if someone over about 6'4" walks by all bets are off. I didn't mind it, but the shy at heart might. Like many places on Maui, there's no A/C, but windows on 3 sides and a good strong ceiling fan kept the room well ventilated and bearable, though the warm temperatures do take some getting used to for a San Franciscan.
It doesn't do the breakfasts justice to describe them as just baked goods and fruit. They're fresh out of the oven and fabulous. Really, is there anything better than a just-baked, still-warm croissant? John, the proprietor, places them on the table in the center courtyard, and you can eat out there or go back to your room. Coffee is do-it-yourself with the coffeemaker in the room. So far, so good, but like I said, things took an odd turn on the day I left. Well, it may have started the night before...
Coming back from dinner, I saw a breakfast basket left on the ledge where the stairs lead up to the unit above mine. I didn't think much of it, thinking those guests had made some special arrangement. But it was still there the next morning, at the appointed breakfast hour of 8:30 -- and there were no breakfast baskets in their usual spot. I waited about 15 minutes -- still nothing, while on prior days breakfasts had appeared at 8:30 sharp. There was also no sign of other guests, though I know for sure there were people in at least one other unit. It was like a Twilight Zone episode where the guy wakes up and finds everyone in his town has disappeared. Deeply odd.
I walked over to John's area and there was no sign of life except his dog peacefully sleeping on the floor, so I chose not to pester him. I resumed packing and left around 9, still no sign of breakfast appearing (it's ok, I had a fabulous breakfast a few miles outside town).
The only explanation I have is that maybe John misremembered a conversation we'd had 2 days earlier about my possibly leaving early and skipping breakfast to avoid some road work south of Hana -- but that was never a plan, just a "one thing you could do..." -- and it still doesn't explain the other guests' missing breakfasts or the mystery overnight basket. I remain baffled.
