Very sweet owner, property was in great condition, room was beautiful as was the view! The black sand beach is within easy walking distance from the property and you can hear the waves crashing at night. It's so peaceful. The breakfast was also delicious. We will 100% be back!

My family and I had a wonderful stay at the Bamboo Inn in Hana. Our two-story suite was spacious and very comfortable, especially the king bed upstairs (very comfortable mattress). It was nice that there was no television in the room, as it forced our teenage son to actually talk to us, which was a real bonus! We really enjoyed the unobstructed view of the ocean, and the outdoor bathtub on the balcony. But the highlight was falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves and the ocean breeze… it was downright magical! I haven't slept this soundly in a very long time. John, the host is a delightful, older man who is something of a Hana institution. He has been here forever, knows everyone and has wonderful stories to tell. If any guest manages to upset John (as I read in one review), they must have really been a handful, because he is the very definition of easy-going. The Bamboo Inn is a wonderful escape in a town that is itself a wonderful escape!

We stayed in the Honu suite in Bamboo inn for a night in December 2024. We loved the beautiful views and sleeping to the sounds of the waves. The outdoor shower was great and the kitchenette and balcony had great views of the black sand beach. John was a great host and had freshly prepped breakfast if crossiants, fruit and muffin ready for us in the morning. One of our best stays in Hawaii. Wish we could stay here longer.

We stayed one night in Hana, as I knew the road would be a challenge for me (motion sickness) and I was so glad we did. We had fun exploring the small town (although for a small town we were impressed that there were two grocery stores and at least two Thai restaurants!) and checking out the small beach. The location of Bamboo Inn was perfect, and the view was outstanding. We loved sitting on the lanai and listening to the waves. We had the Honu suite and it was charming-very clean and nicely appointed. We did not have an issue with the outdoor shower for our suite and used it just fine, however it might be nice to provide robes to go back and forth from the shower to the room and I'd like it if the shower had a latch on the shower door just in case it got bumped open. The pastries and fruit in the morning were thoughtful and delicious and we loved that creamer was provided in the fridge as we had forgotten to pick some up at the store. A perfect night in Hana!

Stay here if you want to get verbally abused by the owner. I felt as if I was not a paying customer but rather an errant schoolboy who deserved a good “schooling,” to use the owner’s actual term. Other than that rooms are fine if you’re crashing in Hana for a night; expect to overpay for a Motel 6-equivalent nonetheless.

We just got back from a 2 night stay in the Nai'a suite and we can't wait to go back! This was the perfect stay for my husband, toddler, and I. The king bed nicely fit all of us and was very comfy. My toddler slept almost 13 hrs the first night! It was so nice having two floors as our toddler could sleep peacefully while my husband and I could relax downstairs. The tub outside was so nice especially when it rained in the morning. All 3 of us could fit comfortably in the tub. The only thing is the jets don't work. But that didn't stop us from enjoying it. The kitchen has a fridge and there's a small oven with a stove top. I wish there was a microwave but we made due with the stove top. There were pots and pans in addition to dishes and cutlery. We made use of almost everything. John is a very sweet older gentleman that was around to answer questions and help us with our door key. He provides a simple breakfast of warmed croissants, muffins, and a couple of slices of papaya which for some may not seem like much but as a busy mama, having someone provide breakfast tasted like vacation. My toddler loved the dogs on property. The neighbor has a dog named Moxie who followed us down to the beach and back! It was almost like she was our dog! I'm born and raised on Maui so I was totally used to the few critters that would come and go. Hana is a tropical rainforest right next to the beach so for anyone complaining, you must understand it come with the territory. We overall had no issues and would recommend this place to anyone seeking a retreat!

We had the “Iwa Suite” overseeing the beach. (The other suite with outdoor shower is quite exposed, lol, couldn’t do it). Quiet quaint place. No TV in room. Was really relaxing to be in a quiet neighborhood. We spent just 2 nights here in Hana before moving on to another location. John is a really sweet and kind owner / host. He has recommendations where to visit or to eat if you’re interested. Recommend!

What a wonderful place to stay. John was a warm and welcoming host who brought us warm croissants and fresh fruit in the morning and had lots of good ideas about Hana to share. The view from the balcony is fantastic and the area one of our favorite places on Hawaii! We can only recommend!

Yelp
My wife started off our 8 night stint on Maui in Hana at the Bamboo Inn. We stayed in the Honu suite for two nights and absolutely loved it. Our room in particular had an outdoor bath tub and shower, which really added to the ambiance of the stay. Staring out onto the bay and black sand beach in the tub will be a memory to last a lifetime. The room was no frills in the best of ways. There was no TV or luxury amenities, but it was impeccably clean, had an amazing mattress, a small kitchenette to reheat leftovers from the food trucks down the street, and ocean views complete with beach access. We have zero regrets spending a couple nights in Hana because we really enjoyed the off the beaten path vibes of the area. Lots of people just come out for the day, but I would have felt so rushed. Spending a couple nights was the perfect way to experience the area because it allowed us to enjoy the slower pace. Our host, John, was super kind and knowledgeable about how to spend our time with great suggestions. One of which was to get Huli Huli chicken on the beach, which was super delicious with great waterfront views. Another that the botanical gardens were worth the side trip and we totally agree. We also learned he has a deep connection to the community because of the magazine article included in the information book placed in our room. What we loved about Hana was the unpolished and unapologetic authentic vibes. Both nights we fell asleep with the patio window open welcoming cool ocean breezes and rhythmic waves sounds while we slept. Now we're sitting on the beach in Kapalua with the Disneyland-ish resort persona wishing we were back in Hana. We hope to be back sometime soon John. In the meantime, go huskies.

Yelp
We stayed for two nights in the Nai'a suite and loved every moment of it. If you're looking for a resort or chain hotel experience then just stay somewhere else but if you can overlook a few minor quirks of a beachside sleepy hideaway then... look no further. We enjoyed our sunrise view from our balconies (two in this suite for the upstairs room and then the downstairs living room). Yes, no TV or AC but we didn't miss it. The breeze and ocean lullaby were more than enough. Our toddler loved bath time in the outdoor jacuzzi tub and playing with the neighbors dogs that come by to say hello and nap on the grass. Yea, we plunged our own toilet and encountered a few critters on property but we didn't want a sterilized experience. We decided to stay in a tiny jungle beach town at a place that felt more like someone's home than a resort. Truly a heavenly experience

Yelp
After reading some of the reviews, I was a bit hesitant about what it was going to be like. Going in with realistic expectations, I was pleasantly surprised that it was more comfortable than I thought. I did not mind having no TV as this is a great place to unplug and unwind and the oceanview from our lanai is nature's entertainment. The beach that you can walk to isn't much of a sandy beach but is swimmable although can be rough at times. Aware of what a mosquito magnet I am, I did not want an outdoor shower or hot tub so opted for the Iwa Suite which had a pretty impressive shower. The room was comfortable but as others have mentioned, is dated and you can see wear and tear. Since you are in a tropical environment, you will probably see small ants and even a gecko in your room which we kindly escorted out to the lanai. Thankfully, did not encounter any spiders in the room although they are around property. The fridge, microwave, and plates came in handy to enjoy our included breakfast and fruits we picked up from the fruit stands close by as well as takeout on our lanai. Quiet although you will hear your neighbors, safe enough that you don't need to lock your doors and a wonderful place to unwind but be aware that is it rustic.

Yelp
We had a pleasant, memorable stay at the Bamboo Inn. The room was very clean, the bed was comfortable, the kitchenette had everything we needed. The Inn has great attention to detail, bamboo Matt ceilings, teak and bamboo furnishings, gorgeous tropical hardwood floors, ceiling fan, with complete privacy. We were lulled to sleep each night by the nearby shore break. It had a tree house feel to the room. There is no A/C but it is not needed, constant breeze off bay made for a very comfortable stay. We would definitely stay here again. The host, John, was very nice and accommodating. Again, would repeat.

Derek G.

Yelp
Incredible views, sounds, atmosphere. This place really suites the Hana vibe. Simple, relaxed, and comfortable. We showed up late with no reservation and happened to catch an open spot due to a cancellation. John was extremely accommodating and was a great host. Whenever we get back to this side of the island we will be making this out destination. We'll probably make a better effort to come back sooner just to stay here.

Yelp
I had a mostly fine time here that took a weird turn at the end, which is why this is a 3 star review and not 4. I stayed in the Honu Suite, which was spacious and nice, with a kitchenette, small dining table and balcony looking out on the bay. Because I was still on California time, I was awake to see the spectacular sunrise over the bay from the balcony -- just awesome. The outdoor shower takes a little getting used to. There's a screen for privacy, though if someone over about 6'4" walks by all bets are off. I didn't mind it, but the shy at heart might. Like many places on Maui, there's no A/C, but windows on 3 sides and a good strong ceiling fan kept the room well ventilated and bearable, though the warm temperatures do take some getting used to for a San Franciscan. It doesn't do the breakfasts justice to describe them as just baked goods and fruit. They're fresh out of the oven and fabulous. Really, is there anything better than a just-baked, still-warm croissant? John, the proprietor, places them on the table in the center courtyard, and you can eat out there or go back to your room. Coffee is do-it-yourself with the coffeemaker in the room. So far, so good, but like I said, things took an odd turn on the day I left. Well, it may have started the night before... Coming back from dinner, I saw a breakfast basket left on the ledge where the stairs lead up to the unit above mine. I didn't think much of it, thinking those guests had made some special arrangement. But it was still there the next morning, at the appointed breakfast hour of 8:30 -- and there were no breakfast baskets in their usual spot. I waited about 15 minutes -- still nothing, while on prior days breakfasts had appeared at 8:30 sharp. There was also no sign of other guests, though I know for sure there were people in at least one other unit. It was like a Twilight Zone episode where the guy wakes up and finds everyone in his town has disappeared. Deeply odd. I walked over to John's area and there was no sign of life except his dog peacefully sleeping on the floor, so I chose not to pester him. I resumed packing and left around 9, still no sign of breakfast appearing (it's ok, I had a fabulous breakfast a few miles outside town). The only explanation I have is that maybe John misremembered a conversation we'd had 2 days earlier about my possibly leaving early and skipping breakfast to avoid some road work south of Hana -- but that was never a plan, just a "one thing you could do..." -- and it still doesn't explain the other guests' missing breakfasts or the mystery overnight basket. I remain baffled.

Yelp
There are many MANY cute little places to stay in Hana, assuming you don't want to splurge for the Hotel Hana, however I would highly recommend AGAINST the Bamboo Inn in Hana. The place seems attractive online, and the hot tub on the deck is tempting, however the hot tub is small (although really fun) and the only shower is actually outside. It's just as easy to use the day spa at the Hotel Hana (which we also enjoyed) and the view is better at the Hotel anyway. Now I rarely give a bad review to any place, but here are the top reasons NOT to stay here: (1) There is no one there on site in case you have any problems with the room. (2) The phone doesn't work in the room so pray that you have Verizon which actually gets decent reception throughout Hana. (3) There were people making a lot of noise upstairs at 4 AM even though there were no other guests staying at the "inn" the night we were there. (fortunately we were up anyway) (4) for the money, you can stay at any of the 4 places within 20 feet of the bamboo inn or just enjoy the Hotel Hana which is beautiful and spacious. (5) despite the fact that we were the ONLY guests staying there on a Friday night, the owner showed up ten minutes before checkout (which is 11 am on a Saturday btw) to bang on the door. I've stayed at hostels in Mexico whose proprietors were more polite. Considering that I live on Maui now, and we love to take weekend trips to Hana every other weekend, I don't expect to be staying at the Bamboo Inn ever again and you might want to think twice before you do either.

Yelp
This place is a little piece of paradise - I happened to come across it while driving and without access to the internet and was just sold by the charming room, the laid back & unassuming owner who lives on site with his exceedingly well behaved dog Minnie. The rate was a bit high for my budget but I'm so glad that I splurged - the "studio" room had a wonderfully comfortable bed, a "private" outdoor shower (which was really great - I love showering outdoors!), a fantastic kitchenette and a gorgeous deck with a sort of "japanese style" hot tub - I couldn't lie down and stretch out but it worked just fine for the 3 hours I sat and read while eating my breakfast. John, the owner, told me that continental breakfast was provided - but since I'm vegan, he said he'd bring me fruit - and around 9, he brought me a basket of papaya slices and a large cup of orange-lilikoi juice which I enjoyed with my (local) avocado toast and decaf in the hot tub while reading, watching the waves and relaxing deeply. I could hear a bit of noise from the upstairs neighbors - there were two people - but the woman was much noisier walker than the man, but it was not excessive, just the normal sounds of people walking around barefoot on hardwood floors. The phone seemed to work though I didn't need it - and the nice flat panel screen was perfect for watching old movie reruns late at night while drinking pineapple champagne. I would highly recommend this place and definitely go here again - big bang for your buck! It's more beautiful than my own home, has a view, a jacuzzi, and I don't have to clean up - unless you live in a single family home that has been featured in Architectural Digest and you have a personal butler and servants, you will likely be just as satisfied as I was with the Bamboo Inn.

Yelp
We stayed in the Nai'a suite and the view was awesome!! However, the place needs some serious TLC. The bathroom fixtures, door nobs and electrical outlets need repairing/replacement. Light switches didn't work, window blinds weren't cleaned in months. The upstairs bedroom windows had NO blinds or curtains and bathroom needs new towels. The kitchen cabinet doors were broken and dirty. The toilet was not flushing and the owner/manager told us to use the plunger because it was our problem that we caused. Very rude. The next morning he apologized and said there was no plumber. We won't stay there again.

Matt P.

Yelp
So happy with this pick! Having decided to stay the night in Hana rather than rushing to drive back, I picked the Bamboo Inn. Easy to make reservation, small, rustic, no tv, suite with cuzzi tub on deck. You can hear and see the waves crash on the black rocks of the beach in Hana Bay. Nothing to do in town. Bring some snacks and drinks, a good book to read and Chillll. Almost no cellular or wifi service. Don't stress, it's a small blessing. Beautiful trees and plants everywhere. If nobody's there when you arrive, check the box on the welcome board, that's where I found my key with a note and instructions... We will be back for a longer stay next time.

Megan M.

Yelp
Pluses: - view from I'wa room is amazing! - 'check in' was simple - John simply gave us an envelope and walked us up to our room (which is up a flight of stairs) - fresh Hawaiian flowers were very petty and a nice touch. - coffee is fresh and Hawaiian - pastries were tasty Minuses - in general, there seemed to be a lack of graciousness or hospitality from John (example, as we were checking in - he told us that breakfast would be served at exactly 8:30 and we were to receive exactly one glass of juice per person. Two glasses might have broken the bank account we guess) - there is no front door - it's a glass and screen sliding door. Of which, the screen door was broken and the glass door was difficult to lock and unlock. - the room was rather primitive for the most part. ...kitchen sparsely stocked - two, and no more, of silverware, glasses, etc. ...no hangers in closet and when we asked for some, we were given 4 ...two sets of towels only - no spares ...no wifi in room ...kitchen window levers were broken - couldn't open/close...no ice in the small freezer in kitchen In conclusion, don't come here. You will feel that you did not get a good value for the money spent. If the price point were more like $100/night, as mentioned previously by another reviewer, we might not have felt so taken advantage of.

Myris G.

Yelp
This place is simply AMAZING!! I LOVED my stay here and I highly recommend this place. Breakfast was delicious, the views, waking up to the sound of the ocean, it's priceless!!

Nellie D.

Yelp
I was a little apprehensive about the Bamboo Inn after some of the negative reviews. Additionally, the website could use some updating. It looked like a throwback to over a decade ago. Someone definitely needs to smooth out their marketing! That said, after a three night stay there, I truly fell in love. During the panic inducing, albeit stunningly gorgeous, trip on the Hana Highway to the Inn, I could only hope that it was worth the trip. When we arrived, we wondered how to check in because there wasn't a traditional front desk, per se. Our key was in an envelope in a bulletin board. Too easy! The only cell and internet reception was available down near the reception. But, this forced us to enjoy each other's company and disconnect from the daily grind. We stayed in the I'wa Suite, which was two flights up and had an incredible view of the beach and the ocean. What an amazing sight to see each morning! The kitchen does not have a stove, however, there is a fridge, sink, utensils, and a hot plate. We also had some teeny ant visitors in the kitchen area. I meant to recommend a natural repellent: garlic cloves. It works like a charm and does no harm. The tropical flowers placed in the room were beautiful and fresh. And, a nice touch. The multi-headed shower was AMAZING. I wish I could upload the picture I took because I've never seen anything like it. And, the water pressure was perfect. I definitely plan to put one in my house one of these days. The breakfast was really delicious too. Simple and satisfying basket with muffins, croissants, fruit, and jam. Yum! To save some money, we went to the local general store and bought fruit and snacks to have during the day. If you're looking to stay in the lap of luxury, this place isn't for you. But, if you want to get a way and just relax in a corner of Heaven, then it is.

Janelle S.

Yelp
We spent two nights in Hana on our honeymoon, which I highly recommend if taking the Road to Hana. Don't try to rush it in one day. Initially we were a bit apprehensive about Bamboo Inn, unsure whether the value was worth it. I assure you it is! Right along a black rock beach on Hana Bay, this place is great. Sunrises are majestic! If you're looking for a middle-of-the-road price range, superior friendliness by the proprietor, and a clean, well-stocked place to unwind, Bamboo Inn is your place. John serves a nice little pastry breakfast with the best flaky croissants! We stayed in the Hanu suite, which has a fantastic outdoor shower and a deck with a killer view overlooking the most eastern point on Maui. Only minor flaw is that the free WiFi is weak and pretty dodgy from the suite, but, really, you're in Hana, you shouldn't be online much anyway! So it wasn't a big deal for us, but worth nothing, I suppose.

Mac L.

Yelp
We took a 2 day trip to Hana on our honeymoon and were surprised by the friendly service and accommodations afforded by the Bamboo Inn. It's pricey and our first impression was underwhelming, but it's amazing how grateful you'll be for the place after a night's stay. We brought a bottle of wine with us and watched the sun go down from the beach, which was just outside our door. The hot tub was AWESOME after some adventurous waterfall hunting. All in all, this was our best night's sleep of the entire trip. John fixed us up with an early pastry breakfast and we left happy and energized. You can spend more or less elsewhere, but the Bamboo Inn is worth it.

Heather H.

Yelp
Nothings cooler than staying in an entire hotel suite made from floor to ceiling bamboo! The main building has three suites, all that have views overlooking the ocean and close access to. Our room was very clean and stocked with a mini kitchen, fridge, table n' chairs, and the best outdoor jetted tub to soak in. The central patio is great for chilling out and having your complimentary breakfast of pastries with jam n' juice. The only two gripes I had with this place were 1. The wifi was only accessible from the outdoor patio. 2. Our shower was outdoors - nice for showering off after a dip in the ocean, but forget about any privacy as it was right by the main stairs and patio area. This is a superb choice to stay in Hana as most other "hotels" there proved to be house shacks.

Don T.

Yelp
Outstanding host, fantastic location and great views. We spent two nights here and will book this place again when next we're back in Hana. It has unique, rustic charm so if you want 5 start luxury stay at the Travaasa hotel at well over twice the price. But you won't experience Hana the same way as you would staying here. And that's why you made the trip in the first place isn't it?

Michael F.

Yelp
Me and my wife stayed on the 2nd floor and were not disappointed. If you want to see an amazing sunrise in Maui, look no other place than the Bamboo Inn. Truly breathtaking. I highly recommend staying here.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
I liked the Bamboo Inn. The location was great, and the proprieter was nice and friendly. Being right on the water was lovely, and heating the waves crash and rain pound was sweet. Nice lanai and large continental breakfast basket of fruit and Costco croissants and muffins. The place is a bit shabby, and could use some updating though. Cracked molding, rust stains, etc. Not a big deal, except I don't think the price reflected that. I would probably value it more around the $80-$100 per night range, maybe $120 with breakfast.

Mark B.

Yelp
Have read the other reviews and mostly have to agree. The road to Hana is worth the trip but there is little to no lodging to choose from. My partner and I chose a room here at the Bamboo Inn with the understanding that it wouldn't be a typical hotel. The view is pretty good even though we were looking out over another building and moderately obstructed view of the water. John was fine and everything (basically the key) was available when we drove up. We did know that the showed would be outside but we assumed it would still be private. Alas, it isn't. We were on the lower unit and the guests upstairs (and it was occupied) could see directly into the shower (which you had to walk from the front door to the shower) when they came down the stairs. It really didn't provide for any privacy. The unit itself is sparsely furnished. The bed was ok but the bathroom (which is a basic water closet with just the toilet inside) was in between the kitchen and the bedroom. We had previously booked the hotel for 2 nights but instead we left early and made the drive back to Lahaina. Given that almost all food is from food trucks (and the breakfast was small but thoughtful), we ended up eating breakfast at the Travaasa Inn. We immediately wished we had spent the extra money for a room here or had driven back the first day and made the trip to Hana just a day trip.

Leah F.

Yelp
I stayed at the Bamboo Inn for 2 night on my honeymoon. It was a beautiful place. Very peaceful!! John was an outstanding host. I will stay there again when I go back.

Ryon H.

Yelp
Stayed for a couple of nights during our honeymoon trip to Maui. This is a wonderful place if you're looking for something quiet and off the beaten path.

Pippa A.

Yelp
John, the owner, is a very considerate host, providing an eco-sensitive and truly lovely home-away-from-home. Downtown Hana (if it can be called that), is just a 5 minute walk, and the wild and gorgeous ocean is just steps from his retreat. I also enjoyed that his dog, Snoop, was always up to take me on a walk along the volcanic coast (he knows all of the short-cuts through the stones, inlets and brush!) and that John provides light refreshments in the morning under a communal thatched structure, where the visitors can gather and compare notes and adventures. To that end, John's sage advise about the area, "Let the weather tell you what to do," from hiking through the bamboo forest or swimming in the Sacred Pools or along the beaches, or visiting one of the local state parks, gardens, or Lava Tubes (mauicave.com - say Hi to Chuck!).

Mary G.

Yelp
I highly recommend the Bamboo Inn. The accommodations are romantic, charming, natural, clean and relaxed. We were in the upstairs space that overlooked the ocean. We slept and awoke to the rhythm of the sea. We saw sunrise and moonrise from the lanai. The setting is perfect for being in a rainforest. It was a very very grounding experience. The proprietor was very kind to us and welcomed us to his little piece of Hana heaven. There are fresh flowers in the room, soft coconut hardwood flooring, vaulted bamboo ceiling, a spacious deck to relax on, a superb walk-in shower with multiple jets, a simple galley kitchen, a continental breakfast served daily and quiet. We also bought the most amazing grass fed steaks at the Hana Ranch and grilled them on his grill. We will be back!

Joanne T.

Yelp
Great location: about 100 yards from the ocean and maybe three times as far to "central" Hana. I liked the outdoor shower, even posted a photo of myself IN the shower on Facebook. (G Rated, of course.) No privacy issue because nobody but my husband was around when I used the facilities. The room (Hono suite) was fine, with an old Hawaii feel. Maybe a little small. Kitchen was minimally equipped but usable, especially for a short stay. Host was pleasant. Good through-flow of air. I'd stay again if I were in Hana.

Steven S.

Yelp
Excellent room! My wife and I stayed in the Nai'a suite. The room itself and the view were incredible. John was a lovely host. We are looking forward to our next visit to Maui so we can stay here again.

DeWitt B.

Yelp
The Road to Hana is a fantasic trip. The Bamboo Inn makes the trip better. It is a beautiful three suite inn situated on Hana Bay. The ocean beach is great but a little difficult to swim because of the black rocky beach. The rooms are spacious, clean and have everything one needs for a 2-5 night stay. It is the perfect place in Hana.

Vv V.

Yelp
Great place to stay. Super clean, wonderful views. It is indeed a little expensive for what it is but would definitely be happy to stay again.
