I stayed at Banana Backpackers for almost two months, which was more than enough time to see how things really work there. It’s the cheapest hostel in Brisbane… and that is definitely not a coincidence.
Cleanliness: basically non-existent.
There’s supposed to be “daily cleaning” in the rooms. In reality, it’s a quick vacuum swipe in front of the door that lasts about 15 seconds. Impressive efficiency 😁.
Of course, cockroaches are part of the experience — you’ll even find them in your belongings.
Kitchen: tiny and unusable half the time.
Add to that frequent power cuts, sometimes while you’re showering or running laundry. Naturally, the fridges stop too, and I had to throw away my food three times because of this.
Outdoor area: basically a dump.
No bins, no proper facilities. Just piles of empty bottles, cigarette butts and trash everywhere. A lovely scene if you enjoy living in a rubbish tip.
Management: a masterpiece.
I was kicked out one day before my booking ended because they gave my bed to someone else — and, of course, refused to refund me.
Overall, it’s an amazing hostel if you enjoy living like you’re on the streets and being treated like an animal, all for a few hundred dollars a week.
An unforgettable experience! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
