I really enjoyed staying in this wonderful renovated townhouse, with its tasteful and playful modern design elements inside. My room was "Dusk," with huge windows facing the street and the church. It was very quiet, as the center of Mechelen is almost free of car traffic. Each morning I ate a magnificent breakfast with juice, coffee, fruit, yogurt, assorted fresh breads, and eggs cooked to order. At some B&B's I have the sense that the "breakfast" part is just an afterthought -- it is NOT like that here. Also, the hosts at Dusk Till Dawn have just the right level of friendliness for a B&B, in my opinion -- they seem welcoming and happy to answer questions, but they maintain a professional distance. || ||It's a 10-minute walk to the train station, and from Mechelen, it's quite easy to visit Brussels, Bruges, Ghent, etc., by train. There are tons of trains to and from Mechelen. You don't need a car at all. Locals ride bicycles around town, but it's also a very walkable city, with lovely canals, lots of cafes, and a few very nice restaurants. I learned that about 10 years ago, Mechelen was not a very nice place at all, but there has been a huge clean-up of the river, buildings, and even (former) criminal elements -- making it a great base for exploring Belgium! ||||I would go back to Mechelen, and I certainly would stay at Dusk Till Dawn again.
