"Hotel Verhagen, Ghent, Belgium Centrally located, the sumptuous Hôtel Verhaegen is a mine of local history. Formerlya private mansion inhabited by barons and counts, the five room hotel has been carefully restored by its current owners, a pair of interior designers. Original details include ornate fireplaces and canvases by the 18th century Ghent painter Pieter Norbert van Reijsschoot. This appeared in the September/October 2010 issue."

B&B The Verhaegen, Ghent, Belgium - Explore & Book

"Ghent is an old city with a young soul; medieval Flemish architecture stands perfectly preserved along winding canals, now housing buzzing bars, boutiques and a thriving food scene suited to the trendy residents of this university town. The result is a surprisingly seamless blend of old and new; heritage without a hint of stuffiness. A spirit perfectly embodied at The Verhaegen. When Jan Rosseel and Marc Vergauwe met in design school, they could never have guessed that decades later they'd become the owners of a derelict 18th-century mansion, let alone make it their home. But that’s exactly what happened; the interior designers bought a palatial townhouse in central Ghent, in need of complete restoration. 18 months later, the stunning result was The Verhaegen, a private mansion turned B&B, which showcases innovative Dutch and French design, and is now classified as a historical monument. There are 9 spacious bedrooms and suites, each with a unique fusion of antiques and modernist touches. Crystal chandeliers hang from the ceilings, sumptuous fabrics furnish the beds, and quirky finds are displayed in hidden corners. It’s certainly not a museum, though; rather a beautiful lived-in home that you're invited to share, and it’s exactly what we’d hoped to find in historic Ghent. Highs A must for art lovers and those interested in Flemish architecture; high-quality furnishings and curated art pieces decorate the interior, and original features have been carefully restoredPerfectly placed for Ghent’s medieval canals and galleries, and just 5 minutes' walk from the GrasleiThe warmth of service. Jan and Marc go out of their way to make you feel welcome in their home, as if you are visiting old friendsHigh-ceilinged rooms with smart panelling, designer fabrics, mural paintings and marble fireplaces. Gorgeous bathrooms, tooBreakfast in the elegant dining room is fabulous: fine china, silver tableware, candles, freshly squeezed OJ and an assortment of tasty treats Lows Rates don't include breakfast, and rooms are expensive compared to more simple B&Bs in the area, but they're absolutely worth it for special occasionsClosed on Sunday & Monday nightsThis being an elegant B&B, it's quiet in the evenings, and there's no night bar, but there are plenty of restaurants and bars nearbyThere's no lift or night porter so no arrivals after 9pm (contact the hotel beforehand if this is an issue)There is a very friendly dog living here - a perk for some" - Alice Tegg

"Not a hotel in the way we typically use the word, the Verhaegen slides in on the Francophone exemption. In English we’d call it a bed and breakfast, or maybe a guest house — whatever you want to call it, it’s a carefully preserved 18th-century mansion located just off the old port, two streets away from the historic center of Ghent. It's a historic center of its own, as well; Count d’Hane Steenhuyse, famed diplomat and key facilitator of the treaty of Ghent, lived here for a time with his family." - Tablet Hotels

My husband, his parents and I stayed here last night in two of their suites and it was incredible! The building was stunning and every room, the breakfast room and even the hallways were decorated so well with countless beautiful details. The interior was truly amazing with art pieces that look like they are from a museum. The service was great too, the owners were welcoming and friendly. Some other details I want to mention are the great water pressure in the bathroom, great espresso machines in our rooms and a beautiful well kept garden that looks like it belongs to a castle! If you want to experience feeling like royalty you should add the breakfast. Thank you so much for making our time so memorable, we truly enjoyed it.

An absolutely beautiful hotel. The buildings and the gardens are so lovely and peaceful - we had the most relaxing stay. Jan and Marc were wonderful hosts and they have the sweetest dog who welcomes you with a wagging tail. The breakfast room was absolutely gorgeous and even if you may find the price for breakfast a bit high, it's worth it to do at least once for the experience - we thought the food was delicious. We stayed in the Suite Atelier d'Arthur and it was so perfect. The design and decor was impeccable - the only thing to note is that there is a very narrow spiral staircase to get the bedroom which was a little difficult to navigate and may be especially difficult for people with mobility issues or fear of heights or ladders. If you are a lover of architecture and interior design/decorating, you will love this hotel - I couldn't stop admiring it the whole time and there was always a new element to discover and appreciate.

Marc and Jan have created an exquisite haven of peace right in the centre of Ghent. The house itself is like a museum with its eclectic mix of old and new, all tastefully done in keeping with their interior designing skills. |They are excellent hosts and, together with their spaniel Tomba, made us feel very welcome.|Breakfast was a delightful performance and made us feel very special. It perfectly set us up for exploring the delights of Ghent which are largely all within a short walking distance. They recommended several places to eat and all the ones we tried were excellent.|Overall, we would highly recommend staying here for a romantic few days.

The B&B is a mansion from the 18th century. The owners of the building preserved the original atmosphere as it was in that period and decorated it with all the details in mind. Since they are interior designers themselves, this hotel emerged as a work of art. We felt very special during our stay here. The quality of the breakfast and the table setting were magnificent. The room was very nice. The owners Jan&Marc are very kind people. A hotel where you will experience the same atmosphere as the texture of the city of Ghent.

Jan & Marc are fabulous hosts and the house is beautiful. 5 star service throughout our stay.||Firstly, the parking is extremely secure and also reasonably priced and only a 50m walk to the residence.||The property is ideally located 5 mins walk from the centre of Ghent, evrything in the house is wonderfully decorated and last but not least, The Breakfast, wow, you have to have the breakfast!

The result is this review: Dear community and followers , let me take you through it... The building is impressive, but the staff is awful. In the end, we were yelled at (I'm not kidding!!!) And why? Because you didn't drink the (poor quality and overpriced wine, €40-65) from the minibar... but your own. A suite... booked for more than €1,400 for three nights (include damage door in bathroom and fraggle stairs ) We also had a kitchen... on a day when the temperature was over 32 degrees... So we ate in the garden in the evening... (first day upon arrival... Original quote: "The important thing is that you feel comfortable... This is a private garden... You can do whatever you want. You have a kitchen... etc. etc.") When we had finished our home-cooked meal, we cleared the table... We went upstairs for a moment and came back... The wine we had bought ourselves was suddenly gone. When we asked one of the owners about it in surprise, he simply said it had been thrown away, explaining that it was his house and that you wouldn't take your own food with you to a Michelin-starred restaurant. Right... sure. 1. It's not a restaurant. It is and remains a garden where you can spend time. 2. It is our decision what we want to drink and what we don't (especially if it doesn't suit our taste). 3. If you don't want people to drink their own wine in the garden in the evening (mind you, it's a garden, not a restaurant, etc.), then you can politely point this out. No problem. (His response was very aggressive and extremely loud, "I don't have to. Furthermore, he followed up with more loud, confused arguments on his part.") 4. If it's your own house and you want it to stay that way, with all your rules and concepts, then you shouldn't rent it out. Because the concept doesn't work. We're not in prison. It's simple. What's next? That you're not allowed to drink your own water from the supermarket in your room because you have to drink the expensive water from the minibar? Getting loud, threatening and throwing away property that you paid for yourself when you just go into your room for three minutes? It's not enough to pay €1,400 for three nights and an overpriced, modest breakfast for €25 per person per day (anyone who cooks themselves knows what I mean... And I mean it... I would praise it if it were praiseworthy). We have travelled extensively throughout our lives, but we have never experienced anything so unprofessional. As long as you follow the owner's concept and they see your money, everything is fine. However, as soon as you deviate from this, the owners become suspicious. Very strange owners. Something about the concept just doesn't add up, both from a human and psychological point of view. What bothered on top and irritated us the most was that it smelled like weed in the lobby the entire time. We wanted to have a nice stay in Ghent, but in the end we didn't feel safe and felt very uncomfortable and threatened (it's worth reading the negative reviews).

It was a great experience! The atmosphere was astonishing and the rooms had a breathtaking aesthetic. We had also a booklet of the building history which was a beautiful gesture. Thank you !

There are hotels/ BnBs, and then there is the Verhaegen! It doesn't just offer you a comfortable place to stay, but a piece of Ghent's history. An experience in itself, this place is undoubtedly one of the most unique accommodations. Housed in a well preserved 17th century mansion, the interiors exude panache and are tastefully decorated to reflect the same. The owners, interior designers by craft, have done a great job in this regard. The service is pleasant and personal, with Jan & Marc offering valuable suggestions on discovering Ghent. Breakfast in the beautiful dining hall (probably the most beautiful part of the property) is something not to be missed. There is a lovely garden, which is impeccably maintained. In short, it's like experiencing a different era on a short time-machine trip. To anyone thinking about staying at the Verhaegen, please do without a second thought!! You will not regret it. PS: There is also a lovely canine, adding to the charm of the property!
