Off-Centered Ale Trail: Kansas City

"The tall green and gold clock perched so elegantly outside Kansas City’s Union Station landed there in its middle age. The clock first appeared in Kansas City in the mid-1880s, where it was installed at the corner of 10th and Main. In 1918, it moved a few blocks away and was installed in front of the Mace Jewelers storefront. Finally, in 1936, it moved to its current spot in front of Union Station. Union Station opened in 1914 and, in its early days, no one would have thought to add more bells and whistles. It had replaced a small Union Depot, and there were still so few travelers coming through Kansas City that townspeople found the new and imposing Beaux-Arts station completely ridiculous. Some even called it the “Jackson County Insane Asylum.” But the city changed quickly. Soon, nearly 200 trains were passing through here every day and a million people passed through the station at its peak, during World War II. The clock stood steadily outside, privy to thousands of hellos and goodbyes, until the station closed in the 1980s. It’s now a multipurpose development and exhibition hall, though Amtrak maintains a station for travel aboard the Missouri River Runner (St. Louis-Kansas City) and the Southwest Chief (Chicago-Los Angeles). After more than a century outdoors, the elements took their toll on the lamppost. In 2015, the top section simply fell away from the rest of the clock body. Fortunately, in 2016, a private foundation put up $50,000 for the clock’s restoration. It was reinstalled in June of that year. The lamppost’s original internal mechanisms from the 1880s have been restored as well and are now on display separately inside Union Station’s Science City." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Great place to watch a movie! The screen is nice and ginormous! The tickets are cheap but you're probably going to have to pay for parking. Overall, Union Station is worth visiting.

Watched the Star Wars Phantom Menace on the Extreme Screen. What an awesome experiance. Popcorn was good and met my expectations. Seats were comfortable. I LOVE that the wheelchair seats are at the top (most theaters put them near the bottom in the neck strain zone). Look forward to seeing other cool movies on this screen.

Google
It is a great theater. The facility is very clean and the people working are great. The screen is absolutely beautiful. The seats are nice and plush. The ticket prices are very reasonable.

Google
Fantastically huge screen to see a movie on! Seats are not great if you're used to movie theaters with reclining lounge chairs, but I'd see a movie here again if I were to visit.

Yelp
We went here for Inside Out 2, and not only was the movie great, it was a nice change of pace from the typical sticky-floor, suburban feeling movie theaters. It also happened to be our three year olds first movie in a theater! The major underrated benefit to this theater, IMO, is not only is it great for kids' movies, but it's not incredibly loud. You know those theaters that want to flex their audio and you can feel it in your chest during an action scene? Not the case here. Perfect audio balancing, which helps my sensitive kiddo (and me, let's be real). I was surprised that even after buying four tickets, popcorn, and snacks that they wouldn't validate parking. It's gotten much stricter around Union Station as the Streetcar has taken off, which I totally understand. However, I think being a paying customer should have a small reward. Just a little feedback. I love almost everything about Union Station, right down to the bathrooms, so enjoying this theater is no surprise. Go check it out!

Yelp
I saw Barbie here a few weeks ago. I lived in Kansas for 20 years and have never been here, I went to the theatre on one of my many trips back. The tickets are more reasonable than a regular movie theatre- $7/ticket at night, $5 earlier in the day. It is first come first serve with seating. The screen is gigantic- almost a smidge too big. It's hard to see everything in one look, you have to move your head around to see both ends of the screen. Still a great experience! It's neat to get to go into the Union Station and explore all the beauty there vs just a free standing moving theatre. You can find free parking along nearby streets (depending on the hour). And you're a short walk away from the WW1 museum; even if its closed, you can walk up and enjoy a beauty view of downtown KC. Definitely recommend this movie theatre!

Yelp
$5 for a movie? What year is this? This is a clean theater. Plus... it's like the biggest screen in KC. And... they play new releases . Also... they validate parking. In addition... the concessions are reasonably priced. FYI the $5 is for the 12:30 show, but still it's a good deal. It's worth the drive and parking hassle to check this theater out at least once.

Yelp
A train station with an Imax movie theater. Screen is HUGE and I don't think I've yet to see a movie fill the entirety of it yet. It's one of the larger theaters I've been in seating 440 and they do a good job of keeping it clean. Occasionally they do have special showings that utilize the imax screen or unique documentaries and independent films. Concession stand is on the small side serving popcorn, candy and fountain drinks. If your a union station member the popcorn is free. The perfect date restaurant Pierponts is across the huge hall or just some well made decently priced martinis at uniquely awe inspiring bar. The two have put on special engagements together dinner and movie that were deliciously entertaining. Parking could be free if you park behind union station and use the bridge or front at a post office spot when it's closed. Other wise their is the garage or honor box. You will be ticketed if you don't pay the ' honor' box, so bring cash for this.

Yelp
This place is just okay. I went and saw "OZ" here in 3D. While the sound is great and the seating is comfortable. I was quite dissapointed that the movie didn't span the whole screen. It was just the same size it seemed as a normal theater and to pay $13 something to see this movie was not worth it for me. I wouldn't come here to see another movie at that price. I just like the Union Station/Crown center experience and the walking around thru the sky bridges. Save your money and go to a normal theater.

Yelp
Went and watched National Parks 3D today. It was outstanding. Spend the $6 and take your wife, your girlfriend, husband, sister, brother, mom, dad, nanny or the guy sitting next to you on the barstool.

Yelp
Love union station and one of my favorite activities here is the extreme theatre. Just watched The Monument Men. Excellent movie Haven't been disappointed yet with any movies we have watched here. Come to the station, something for everyone an unbelievable experience.

Yelp
This theater has a massive screen that's pretty good for an immersive 3-D experience. We recently saw the National Geo Jerusalem documentary here and it didn't disappoint. The theater was nearly empty when we went. The seats and carpet were in almost-new condition and the theater was spotless. The sound system was ok, but bass was a bit buzzy.

Yelp
Getting to watch a movie in a theater inside our historic Union Station is such a fun experience. We always come early so we can walk around and see the sights inside. They serve Coke at the concession stand which is my favorite! Staff is super friendly and on my last visit I was chatting with the manager and she informed me that they'll be getting new seating next year!!! Woop Woop! Clean theaters, which is huge, because I've been in some where I was afraid to put my purse on the floor... Not only do they show some great Hollywood movies but you get special showings (like Elf!) and some really interesting documentaries. Please, when you visit Union Station, don't forget about this little gem that's just a short ride down the escalators.

Yelp
I have been here several times for regular or 3D movies. Extreme is an understatement. 5 story screen for $5.00 it'll make ya feel insignificant.

Yelp
Went to see "Monuments Men" tonight. When we bought are tickets an hour and half before a prime time showing, we were customer numbers 9 & 10! We walked in right as the previews were showing and had great seats. This is a 440 Seat Theatre... and I must say a HIDDEN GEM! We were 2 of maybe 25 people. The sound was great, the seats were comfortable...and the temperature not too cold! We saw a 2D movie, and to me the picture is perfect. The guys at the concession, whom we bought the tickets from, were great!! Though they were bored out of there minds, and I don't blame them, not a lot of customers to help! If you have not seen a movie at this theatre...please go give them some customers!

Yelp
The screen at Union Station is one of the best secrets of Kansas City that should really be more well known. Everyone who works there is very friendly and you can tell they love movies and want you to have a good experience. The screen is huge, the price for a 3D IMAX experience is the cheapest you're going to find, and they routinely play huge movies the day before they come out. I highly recommend people check it out.

Yelp
This is a great theater. The screen is huge and the location is awesome. The only down side is sometimes that the movies are limited, but we just saw The Martian, it was fantastic and the venue was great.
