The good:
- The hotel is the first stop for the ski resort buses so you will likely be guaranteed a seat on the way to the resorts and you will be the first drop-off after a long day.
- There is also a bus stop for the town transit right outside the hotel and the lobby will give you a ticket to use the transit for free during your stay. Town is only a 15-20 min walk so we did that a few times but we also went up to the Banff Gondola which would have been too far of a walk.
- The hotel seems to be clean and functional.
- Free coffee in the lobby every morning
- Decent restaurant, The Keg, located right on-premises.
The terrible:
- As other reviews have mentioned, the terrible stench of chlorine throughout, even in the main lobby. The pool guy is clearly getting his balancing wrong. The online pictures of the pool was one of the things that swung it for us to cancel at another hotel and book at Caribou, but trust me, you will probably not want to use the pool & jacuzzi area with that strong stench.
- Lack of power outlets. It baffles my mind that hotels still haven't realized that people travel with 2-3 electronic devices, and in my case, when I ski, I am heating my skis boots, recharging glove batteries (trust me you need them when it gets down to -35C in winter) phone & and camera batteries, etc. Most hotels now have clocks or nightstands with multiple USB outlets, Caribou does not, and combine that with the lack of power outlets you find yourself having to hunt for places to charge things. I eventually dug out a dusty power strip from behind the mini-fridge, unplugged half the lights and mini-fridge plugged into it just to get 2-3 working outlets... otherwise, I was charging my phone in the bathroom overnight :)
- The noise levels. There was maybe a hockey tournament in town so the Caribou seemed to be the hotel where a whole team of screaming pre-teen boys and their families had checked in. I know the hotel can't control all noise levels, but when boys are running through the lobby screaming, at least humor me and attempt to make an effort to control things. I know this sounds grumpy-boomerish but my kids are now young adults and there's no way I would have allowed them to run screaming through hotel hallways at 12-1 am at night.
- The unacceptable wifi. If you hope to work remotely or even do basic internet stuff, forget about it. The wifi is 1-5MB if you're lucky. When I called the front desk and asked if there was maybe an issue with the wifi, a very defensive guy told me that it is to be expected in a 200-room hotel. Really? That's the excuse you're going with? :)
- The dirty carpark. I get it, it snows a lot and grit on the roads causes dust etc, but the level of grime and dust in the carpark was the worst I had seen in any winter hotel carpark, to the extent where you didn't even want to roll your suitcase through the carpark (I know what plebs handle their own luggage on a ski vacation? :) But they had no porter options, but at least let you borrow the luggage carts for free (I've seen some hotels ONLY allow you to use luggage carts if a porter does it for you.
I may stay at Caribou again if I didn't have any other options in town. It seems that Caribou's parent, banfflodgingco.com owns most of the hotels along the main street and even though they advertise a 25% discount for 3+ nights, their checkout didn't take it off automatically and I had to email and ask them for a working code: LETITSNOW
ps. We paid a little extra for the Superior King room with balcony but in the middle of winter it is really too cold to enjoy a balcony, so wouldn't do that again. We only used the balcony to leave our skis out overnight, but could just as easily have left them in the room or in the car, if we wanted to deal with the dustbowl :)
