There was only one weakness. The tea was twinings, and under normal circumstances this would be perfectly acceptable, but for a place as exceptional as this, one of Imperial Teas blends would have been a far better match for the well balanced palate presented by the foods on offer over the course of a leisurely lunch.
Starters were foccacia and Mezze, simple, elegantly presented and thoroughly delicious.
It was the Gnocchi that got the fifth star sealed. In all my years of eating out I have wanted to like gnocchi. I have wanted to like the fluffy little parcels and their interesting sauces, the fun presentations, but somehow they always, even in a 5* restaurant in Verona, fell shorter than napoleon in a wine press.
Not this time. This time the herb sauce delicately touched the taste buds, making the gnocchi feel divine. The cod was crispy, beautifully done and tasting fresh and firm. The dessert menu demanded at least six people so that one could share the delights on offer. The pavlova put to shame every attempt I have tasted in London to emulate the dish. Somehow, tucked in a corner of King's Lynn, there is a gastronomic destination that is putting some of the best eateries in London to shame.
It's not the fat duck. It's not innovating in that way. What it is doing is taking the finest ingredients available locally, and serving them in ways that delight the senses.
It's just a shame about the tea.
