Bankside Hotel, Autograph Collection

"Set the scene.Inside a glass-fronted, six-story building that peeks out at the Thames next to the towering One Blackfriars is a miniature MoMA-style furl of white concrete, racks of bleached pottery, reclining Scandi-angled chairs, and Old Master paintings customized with skateboards and afro combs. Could this be a new, under-the-radar gallery that’s sprung up unnoticed in the orbit of Tate Modern? What’s the story? The Bankside Hotel is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection but is independently owned. L.A.-based Dayna Lee, a former film-set designer (Spaced Invaders, Dances with Wolves) has conjured bright, multi-textured interiors that reflect the hotel’s proximity to all that South Bank artiness—Sixties-style wooden room dividers like abacuses, angular teak carvings, jangle-geometry blue floor tiles, pixellated rugs. A mezzanine space leading to a summer terrace showcases teetering designs made from books and easels. There’s even a maker in residence, curated by Contemporary Collective, with workshops that guests can take part in. What can we expect from our bedroom?A photographic print of a Corbusier tower block, acid-washed yellow rugs, sweatshirt-grey bathrobes, a nice box of pencils for scribbling at the desk, stripped-back bathrooms with just the right amount of clobber. We’ll be honest: The views of the river aren’t front row, but from some rooms (407 is a favorite, but also consider the American-style double queen rooms for families or groups) you can see its marble-grey waters and St. Paul’s. What you won’t find are any plastic water bottles; there’s a water station on each floor instead (sparkling is an option). Key cards are made from paper, bathroom potions are organic, bees will soon be swarming on the rooftop, and the hotel has a zero-to-landfill policy. How about the food and drink? The open-plan restaurant and bar is set to the rear, with its own entrance, and slung with a film-set tangle of spotlights—a ceramic mural depicting the area’s history, from Vikings to the Great Fire, runs along one wall. Chef Lee Streeton came here from 45 Jermyn Street, and poaches market ingredients for a likable menu that taps into various trends without over-egging them—English-made burrata, barbecued cuttlefish with squid-ink spelt, a sea-salty pizzette with mussels, bone marrow for dipping flatbread into, a bubbling pot of monkfish cataplana. The bar staff have fun with the cocktails: you’ll be steered towards a Bicyclette (Campari, wine and soda), but start with a glass of the Hampshire fizz, and try the honey-washed Negroni. Weekend brunch (baked polenta with field mushrooms and wild garlic; smoked haddock hash and sea beets) is picking up steam. Who comes here?Thirty-something Europeans, mid-century moderns in Folk wear and statement glasses, weekend art hounds. How does it fit into the neighborhood?Remember the scene in Four Weddings and a Funeral when Charles tells Carrie about David Cassidy as they stroll past the National Film Theatre? Not many people about, were there? That was 1994. Now this stretch of riverfront is an ongoing festival, livelier than chucking-out time at an Elizabethan theater. Staying here puts you near Tate Modern, the National, the Globe, Borough Market. It would be remiss not to mention the larger Sea Containers hotel across the road, whose rooftop and Thames-side bars are adept at drawing a fizzy, local party crowd, or the fun, help-yourself CitizenM Bankside. Bankside Hotel feels a little more tucked away, though, a des-res rendezvous in one of the city’s most easy-going, enjoyable areas. Anything to say about the service?Clad in denim aprons, good-natured and naturally chatty—if a little slow on the uptake at breakfast. Anything we missed?Probably the vintage bagatelle collection in the basement. But not the vending machines on each floor, dispensing Charlotte Tilbury face masks and Tom Ford sunglasses. (And sparkly pants.) Is it worth it, and if so, why? This is a smart, likable, decent-value hotel, which goes above and beyond in its commitment to sustainability. At weekends you get to appreciate that refreshing, eye-of-the-storm calm of central London without the worker ants." - Rick Jordan

The Best New Hotels in the World: 2019 Hot List

"London’s center of gravity wobbles this way and that, but the South Bank has clocked a prime view of the action since Roman ships scudded up the Thames. Though never has it seen so much urban drama as right now. Despite a profanity of high-rises gobbling up the sight lines, the Bankside Hotel is appealingly succinct at just six stories behind Blackfriars Bridge, angled to catch the light. It’s been curated by Dayna Lee, the film-set designer for Dances With Wolves. What it brings to mind, though, isn’t Hollywood but the set of a ’60s TV show, with bob wigs and mod dresses. It’s all those sheer white walls and honeycomb concrete, jaunty Scandi chairs, pottery shelves with lineups of bone-white vases, and abstract shapes in every direction. One of the standout pieces, however, is the ceramic mural running along one wall of the restaurant and bar, picking out scenes from riverside history: Viking boats, fishing, and the Great Fire. Pick up Tom Ford sunnies and even engagement rings from the elevator-side vending machine. There are water-carafe stations on each floor, single-use plastics are banished, and key cards are made from paper. A mezzanine gallery with arts titles for browsing leads onto a garden terrace—views of the river and St. Paul’s are a little restricted, but you’re still in the box seats up here. There’s a midcentury positivity, a festival of British optimism; this is a thoughtful pied-à-terre hotel for dedicated followers of London." - CNT Editors

Google
This hotel is a gem. I cannot say enough about the room, the facilities, the location, and the team. Let’s start with the team. Nice, professional, warm, capable, and friendly. From the moment you walk in, you can see that this is a very well trained group of ambassadors. They truly make you feel like you’re a member of their family. The setting for the hotel is terrific. You will find yourself close to many key attractions. The room is quiet in the evening. It is comfortable and well appointed. Thank you very much for an amazing 10 days in London. We have somebody wonderful memories.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Bankside Hotel, and can’t say enough good things—especially about Richard. From the moment we walked through the doors, he welcomed us with warmth, professionalism, and genuine care. It was my son’s 10th birthday, and Richard went above and beyond to make it magical. He surprised us with a traditional British Caterpillar cake, champagne, lemonades, and balloons waiting in the room. But it wasn’t just what he did—it was how he did it. It’s rare to meet someone so naturally kind and thoughtful. Richard is truly a gem and made our trip unforgettable.||The rest of the staff was also wonderful—special shoutout to Mohamed, who was incredibly friendly and helpful throughout our stay.||The hotel itself is immaculate, modern, and beautifully designed. The location is perfect—quiet yet central, with most major sights about a 15–20 minute walk away.||And the breakfast? Absolutely delicious. Fresh, beautifully presented, with great variety and attentive service. A perfect start to each day.||We couldn’t recommend the Bankside more. It felt like a true home away from home, and we’ll definitely be coming back.

Google
Stunning hotel. The artwork and design is first rate throughout all the common areas and the rooms are equally nice. Staff were friendly and very accommodating, allowing for check-in two hours early after my flight from US. Location is great, too. It seems to be no more than a 20 minute walk from any attraction. A great option if you’re looking to explore the city on foot. I can’t say enough about this property.

Stayed here before going to the 02 Arena - so a very convenient location for this & all of Central London. Check - in was friendly & efficient with complimentary drinks- nice touch. The room was perfect - very clean , comfy bed & great amenities. We also received a complimentary bottle of champagne. I didn’t manage to catch all of the names of the staff that work here but Andras Goldsbrough was particularly helpful. Breakfast was excellent - lovely & fresh with great coffee. I would certainly recommend this hotel . We will stay again the next time we are in London .

Our faith in the hotel industry has been restored by our visit to Bankside Autograph.||Seamless, friendly check in process with great service. Staff were great in the Art Yard - friendly, professional and attentive. Same for breakfast today. Service at breakfast was excellent - good range of food choice, good quality produce and coffee promptly delivered to the table. ||Our room was very comfortable and elegantly furnished. Water taps available on every floor etc. Good quality bathroom products and towels.||We loved the decor and the ‘feel’ of the hotel - very relaxed, elegant and comfortable with superb service.||We will most definitely be returning.

Google
Staff and location were excellent. Breakfast top notch. Room, Deluxe Guest room, 1 King. Room was nice, but nowhere to open and keep you full size luggage, very odd, we kept our on the floor. Fridge has a few items, and the water fill station in the hall is an awesome idea, especially for tourists. Lighting in the room very odd as well, had a very bright night light that if you turned off, you could not turn on any lights.

Yelp
I read every review. There is absolutely no reason the Bankside should get less than 5 stars. The two reviews I read that gave 4 stars didn't specify why. This hotel is excellent in all aspects. I felt extremely well taken care of and really enjoyed my London stay. We celebrated my husband's birthday here, and they had champagne and a chocolate dessert with macarons waiting for us in the room when we returned from our day out. Things we loved about the breakfast buffet: the hash browns (they're like tater tots - yum), the cappuccinos, the fresh eggs, the fresh bacon, and the grilled portobello mushrooms. In life, it's the little things that make a difference, and the Bankside pays attention to the BIG things AND the LITTLE things. Truly exceptional.

Yelp
Amazing first impression right away. We had a flight in from the United States, which was an overnight, landing in London just after 6am local time. Having not gotten much sleep at all, we were tired and a little apprehensive about what we would do to kill time before check in, which is normally at 3pm. We were hopeful we could get early check in (depending on availability of course) maybe a few hours earlier if we asked nicely... As it turns out, we headed to the hotel to drop off our bags at least but were very pleasantly surprised to find we were able to check in immediately, and it was like 8:30am. Amazing. Got to our room and took a nap right away. Hotel and room was beautiful, trendy, artsy. Our room had great black out curtains and the bed was very comfortable. Water, coffee/tea and snacks in the room were all complimentary. Conveniently located by Blackfriars station and a grocery/convenience store for any needs. Located in a quieter area, tucked away from the hustle and bustle, but still close to major sites a short walk away. Also need to comment on customer service. Front desk staff were very friendly, professional, and helpful. They did a great job making us feel cared for during our stay.

Yelp
If I could give a 6th star I absolutely would (or more... way more). Our British holiday was spectacular, and largely due to this incredible hotel and its wonderful staff. Upon arrival we were greeted by the friendliest staff who checked us in with no issues. We were offered cocktails, we were given a brief tour, and we were given London suggestions based on our likes and dislikes. The hotel itself is stunning. You don't get that stuffy cookie cutter hotel feeling... it's chic and artsy and fun. The rooms were incredible. The amenities plentiful and the utmost quality. And the art... the art is everywhere and it's a vibe. The hotel location is conveniently located just a block from the river Thames. It's also a short walk to the Tate Modern, Burrough Markets, Flibe Theater, the London Eye, Big Ben, etc. for anything else you're a short walk from many train stations (Black Friar, Waterloo, etc). You can also get a river cruise nearby. While we were mostly in our room just to sleep. The rooms were so fancy yet inviting. There is neat art hanging on the walls. There's complimentary chips (crisps) and chocolates in the cabinets near the mini fridge. The mini fridge is stocked with canned waters. There's also closet space, an iron, a fancy new Nespresso machine, tea options, a safe, mini fridge, etc There's a gym, a working art gallery and work space, a hip bar, and a delightful restaurant that serves both dinner and a breakfast that includes a delicious buffet. One day we were out and we came back to our room only to find that we had a bottle of champagne waiting on ice, truffles, and a thoughtful card from the staff. Another day we ran into a staff member near the hotel (not at work) who gave us more suggestions and told us that they wanted to comp our breakfast for the last couple days of our trip Some tips: Take advantage of the Mon-Thurs wine happy hour on the second floor. There is a lovely lounge and the wine pours freely for an hour. Mingle with the staff and other guests. Ask the staff for local recommendations. Use the carafe water stations on each floor to bring water to your room. There is stilled and sparkling water options on tap. And in the morning as you're leaving feel free to pick up canned water (stilled or sparkling) on your way out. Also, if it's raining there are complementary umbrellas you can borrow on your way out. The Bankside Autograph Collection is an incredible experience. There are so many little touches that make you feel like you're not only in the best of hands, but that the staff has gone above and beyond to make you feel like you're royalty. I will definitely be back here. I can't stop raving about our experience. Please. Don't waste your time with other lodgings. This is where you should stay. Cheers!!

Yelp
I can understand why this is in Trip Advisor's circle of excellence --our experience was fantastic and although we split our stay in London between two hotels (not knowing the neighborhoods), I wish we had stayed here solely for our week long stay. The hotel is fantastic and started blissfully with a super early check in allowed (they had a room available for us at 10:30 am after we arrived from an early morning flight into Heathrow) and so grateful since our family of four was able to shower and freshen up before hitting the National Gallery. They were so sweet to allow us a delayed check out as well (noon check out which allowed us to fit in St. Paul's the morning we left). The room was a good size for London with comfortable modern beds, a really clean interior, and I loved the skin care products (fragrant smell and moisturizing). I loved the modern decor and little touches with complementary water and the bamboo room cards. With the warm weather, it is impressive how cool the room got and the blackout shades were great to help with jet lag. With my husband's Marriott status, they were kind to give us two complimentary breakfasts and the buffet was excellent. What couldn't be beat though is the fantastic location--walking distance to Thameslink (Blackfriars) and the underground (Thameslink/Blackfriars) and walking distance to so many fantastic sites (St. Paul's, Tate Modern, Millennium Bridge). More importantly there once on the tube there are few spots you have to head on for major London spots (eg Westminster with Big Ben, the Abbey, and National Gallery is just a stop away).

Yelp
One of the nicest hotels we've ever stayed at, anywhere. We've been in swankier places, for sure, but the service at Bankside can't be beat. There were all sorts of small touches that we appreciated as well, such as complementary snacks in the room, refillable bottles of water, and complementary wine in the afternoon. The location is super convenient, with the Blackfriars subway station and plenty of restaurants and pubs within easy walking distance.

Yelp
Bankside Hotel is one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed at. I was fortunate to stay here during my London vacation and wished I could have stayed longer. Location: It is a newer looking hotel in South Bank. Walking distance to both Tate Museum and Borough Market. Tube stations to either Blackfriars, Southwark, or Waterloo is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. Accessible along the piers and to other bridges. I felt generally pretty safe around that area even at 10pm. Service: Upon walking into the hotel, they have more of an open table style front desk with agents on their laptops ready for your arrival. Any requests, questions, or concerns were answered and dealt with promptly without hesitation. I also felt staff members went their way to ensure I had a good time staying at their hotel without the pretentiousness and excessive attention I may get at fancy establishments (and I usually do not like that). Room: The room size was fairly reasonable for me. Bed was very comfy. I really like the sweater-like robes and slippers they provided. All modern amenities. Bathroom amenities were stocked well. Refreshment stand includes tea and Nespresso pods for you to enjoy. The iron and hair dryers are in the first drawer inside the closet. I also had their breakfast buffets. Aside from English breakfast selections, they also had mini pastries, yogurt, crackers, smoked salmon. It is a very nice buffet to try at least once. It's £24 if you decide to eat the day of, but £18 if you request it at the front desk the night before. Overall, we know London's accommodation cost is generally very pricey, but the service, room, and everything really made up the bulk of my positive experience in London. The cost is worth it and I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Yelp
This is an excellent 4-star hotel (not 5, cause that's the super fancy Abu Dhabi level that I can't even walk in) that's contemporary. The staff were all professional and offered a drink upon checkin. The room had water you could get with vases outside in the hallway. You get a Nespresso machine with pods as well as tea AND snacks. The location is a bit rough with tube entrances about 10 minute+ walk away. The Southwerk station isn't on the main Circle line you want to be on for touristy stuff. The location is perfect however for the Tate Modern and a walk to the Borough Market. It's quiet and near grocery stores. I suppose my feet were very tired from so much walking.

Yelp
So we moved uptown when we stayed at Bankside Hotel. You walk in to this lovely sweet smelling reception area to a smiling receptionist named James who basically takes care of all your questions and needs. You walk through the lobby and you see all this cool modern funky art. As an old person just being there made me feel like a young London hipster. As we went to our room they had this cool vending machine. I know who's ever heard of such. I can't explain it. You just have to see it. They also had free water stations throughout the hotel which I appreciate from an environmental perspective. We had a large double bed room with the softest robes and a bath tub. Great decor and wonderful coffee maker. The gym had a Peleton, rowing machine along with all the usual weights and treadmills. Location was pleasant with views of the Thames as you walk along the path. If you want a little splurge and some wonderful service this is the place.

Claire S.

Yelp
Best hotel I have ever stayed at. The complimentary coffee was absolutely amazing and the service was astonishing. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in London. The location was nearby buses and the subway. Practically perfect. Mohammed was wonderful every day we saw him and another receptionist was fantastic at providing restaurant recommendations. The breakfast buffet was truly amazing and the orange juice was jaw dropping. I can't recommend this place enough. If you happen to visit London, stay here!!!!

Yelp
This was hands down the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at. My husband and I were on our honeymoon and London was our first stop. We were greeted at the lobby with friendly faces and champagne, while we checked in. We were escorted to our room where it was nicely decorated with roses and heart balloons. We had a whole bottle of champagne sitting in an ice bucket, macaroons, and a box of chocolates. The hotel was very high tech, there was an electric lock bolt on the side, and you can switch it to privacy or housekeeping needed which just a tap. They had still water and sparkling water on tap in the hallways with nice glass pitchers. My favorite part is their wine hour, for an hour or two they serve wine, complimentary to all guest. It was perfect after walking around the Tour of London, very refreshing. There were two times my husband and I waited in the lobby and tried to order a cab on the online app. The concierge saw us struggling and took it upon himself to order a cab for us and the cab came very fast. Talk about amazing customer service. Their morning breakfast is delicious. They have hot breakfast; eggs, blistered tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon, sausage. Cold breakfast; variety of cheeses and meats, yogurts, jams, etc. They have a coffee bar that is delicious! I love an almond latte. There were times we did not have time to sit down and we just ordered coffee to go, still just as amazing and they were fast as well. If you are coming to London, I highly recommend this hotel. We went to Paris and Rome after and Bankside in London is still my favorite hotel.

Yelp
This brand new hotel in the Bankside is very chic and staffed with helpful staff. The room is well appointed with modern touches like in tablet for all your room service, information and USB ports on both sides of the bed as well as almost every outlet. The lobby doesn't have the traditional check in desk but a large table with table decor which looks just like a mid century modern communal table. In each floor outside the elevators there's a vending machine for you bar needs and there's also a water station with choices of spring room temperature, sparking and cold water. Aside from the appointments this hotel is situated in the center of everything in London. Trains stations and taxis are close and everywhere. Uber is readily available as well. I would definitely recommend and use this hotel again in the future.

Yelp
Review is for both the hotel and the restaurant, Art Yard. You can't find the restaurant on Yelp yet. It deserves to be listed! I have only eaten two things but they were unique, tasty and well done. Tempura zucchini is called something french but it is just perfect tempura on huge wedges. I don't like curry a lot but I went with a monkfish Curry recommendation and it didn't disappoint. Very Unique. I thought it would come in a curry broth of some type but instead it was kind of a coating on distinct filets. I might like some mashed potatoes instead of the wild rice but it was a good combo. Ordered the chocolate mouse dessert and that wasn't what I expected either! Very light and pistachio ice cream. Almost ordered another it was so good! Get out the word! Hotel is new and clean. Smallish rooms even for my double upgrade due to Marriott Plat status. But clean and tasteful. Location does take some effort to get from Paddington from Heathrow express on the Tube. But very central.

Yelp
Wehave enjoyed our week here. Easy access to all Lindon sites. Staff is very helpful, welcoming. We have used the gym, business cener, vending kitchen, cafe and even the umbrellas. All in great shape, reliable. The neighborhood has some good pubs , nearby pharmacy, beauty supply, small markets. Made life simpler. It is fun to see the art all around ...really adds to the day. We l9ok forward to staying again!

Yelp
We called this place home for our week away in London and I can't stress how great everything about this hotel is.... The hotel service is top notch and truly seems to care. We are breakfasts almost every day: coffee=perfect, selection= varied and consistently solid....The bar for drinks were professional and a bit of art. Speaking of art... the place is designed well, my chi felt right at home with the mid century modern style updates with whimsical artistic touches that come together for a great experience. The room was clean, big (king size mattress)...... a terrific location in the city meant we could walk anywhere and enjoy the artsy feel of the South Bank!

Yelp
The bankside hotel is wonderful. Amazing location, quiet surrounding environment, close to so many things; and the staff is amazing. Diana especially made us feel like the ultimate guests. I stay at Marriotts quite often but this trip was quite special. Thank you, Diana.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed at this hotel last week for four nights and it was an amazing experience. Every staff member was extremely gracious and helpful. The hotel is gorgeous. The amenities are five star. The location is perfect. I hope every hotel experience for the rest of my life is this wonderful. If I could give this hotel 10 stars I would

Yelp
Beautiful hotel, in a fantastic location. Hotel has state of the art amenities, a warm and friendly staff, beautiful decor and is impeccably clean. If only all hotels were this nice!

Yelp
What a great hotel. This is a newer hotel and is fabulous. It's in a great location, which allows for access to many different areas within London. The staff and service was great. It's a very nice Marriott hotel. If using Uber, it's a bit hard for the drivers to find. I will be back.
