My friend and I were in the middle of a bike touring trip in Maui, when a storm hit--the rains were insane and there was lightning, high winds, water flooding the roads. We made it to Makawao and took shelter on a shop porch. After a few hours of waiting for the storm to pass, we realized that it wasn't going to happen and started trying to find nearby lodging for the night. After calling several places that were either too far away or closed due to covid, we tried The Banyan Tree and the owner Helaina took pity on us and gave us the last room, even though it was extremely short notice and she was really busy dealing with the deluge of water on the property. She was so nice--met us in the downpour with fluffy dry towels and later offered to make us a pizza because she knew we didn't have a car to go get food.
We stayed in one of the cottages with two beds and it was great. The beds were comfortable, there's a full, well-equipped kitchen, and it was just nice and clean and quiet. There's also a beautiful view of the valley from the garden and a huge, awesome-looking pool/cabana/hot tub area (although we obviously didn't get to use it).
So highly recommend staying at the Banyan Tree, especially in the event of a severe multi-day rainstorm!
