Banyan Tree Shanghai On The Bund

"From its waterfront perch on the banks of the Huangpu River, this sophisticated hotel offers a front-row view of Shanghai’s architectural wonders, including the Oriental Pearl Tower. You can take in the skyline from your window-front bathtub or, better yet, from Tops, the rooftop lounge where evening cocktails and tapas melt seamlessly into late-night DJ sets. If, on the other hand, you want to get away from the urban scrum, head to the three-floor spa, an oasis-like retreat with an indoor pool and treatments that draw on Chinese, Thai, Indian, and Indonesian traditions. After a busy day in one of the world’s biggest cities, you’ll be craving ultimate relaxation in the form of the 150-minute Royal Banyan treatment, which includes a coriander cucumber cleanser, a jade face massage, a therapeutic herbal bath, and a luxurious massage with a warm herbal pouch dipped in sesame oil." - Nicholas DeRenzo

Beautiful rooms and superb breakfast. We will choose this property over others in Shanghai. The rooms were spacious and beautifully designed, a tasteful blend of modern Chinese elements and Banyan Tree’s signature resort style. The large bathtub and picture perfect view of the Shanghai Pudong skyline made the stay feel truly luxurious. However, the rooms are starting to show minor signs of age and could use some maintenance. Service, unfortunately, fell short of the warm hospitality we had experienced from Banyan Tree properties in Southeast Asia. While the managers we met were friendly and professional, the rest of the staff seemed disengaged when unsupervised, which left the overall service experience feeling a bit cold. Breakfast was excellent, classic Banyan Tree quality. The spread was extensive, with corners after corners to discover. And it came with complimentary Brut, just like many of their resorts elsewhere. Seating was limited, perhaps because guests tended to linger unintentionally, but Banyan Tree smartly compensates with extended breakfast hours. We actually found the room design and breakfast experience better than another Forbes 5 star hotel we stayed at in Shanghai, which is justifiable for the higher rate. This Banyan Tree property is hitting above its category in the crowded Shanghai hospitality space. Overall a memorable stay!

We stayed two nights at the Banyan Tree on the Bund at the start of a two-week trip in China, and it could not have been a more spectacular kick-off to our trip. It started with a refreshing tea brought during check-in, continued with a room upgrade to a swimming pool (large-scale hot tub) room with a jaw-dropping view of the Pudong, and kept going with a breakfast fit for royalty, plus luxury and kindness at every turn. The rooms are elegant and silent, comfortable, and beautiful. The staff were always helpful and warm. And the breakfast seriously was one of the best in all our travels. We will never stop dreaming about the French toast chef and the care he took to make each piece absolutely perfect. We felt we were being welcomed to a beautiful home, not just staying in a hotel, and we had a wonderful time. We have been fortunate in the last few years to have the opportunity to stay in many luxurious properties. We have learned that luxurious surroundings are nice, but they are even better when they come with sincere warmth and hospitality, and the Banyan Tree more than delivers on both fronts. We would book it again and cannot recommend it highly enough to others seeking a quiet, beautiful spot in Shanghai.

Perched gracefully on the banks of the Huangpu River, Banyan Tree Shanghai is a sanctuary of calm amid the city’s dazzling energy. The design blends contemporary luxury with subtle Asian sensuality—soft lighting, natural textures, and the scent of essential oils that whisper serenity. The rooms offer cinematic skyline views that shift from golden afternoon to a hypnotic night glow. Dining here captures both refinement and restraint, especially at the signature spa restaurant where wellness and flavor meet in harmony. Whether soaking in the rooftop pool or watching the riverboats drift by, time at Banyan Tree feels beautifully suspended.

be aware of booking this racist hotel. When I checked into the room, they gave me a room that was different from the picture, and told me to pay an extra $100 per night to get the same view as the picture. The staffs were absolutely unfriendly and unhelpful at all. I saw many people fighting with the manager during my stay. They only make extra charge to the foreigners. All the Chinese people get a room right away and all the foreigners are paying at the lobby and looked very unhappy. Please don't waste your money on a hotel that discriminates against you. I will never go to Banyan Tree or Accor again. It's disgusting. I will give them 0 stars.

We stayed at Banyan Tree on the Bund for the last 2 nights of our trip to China and wow was it a great place to end our trip. We had the romantic oasis room which had an in-room plunge pool with incredible views of the Shanghai skyline. The location is good as it is only a couple of minutes walk to the ferry port to cross over to the financial district and it is also only a few minutes walk from a metro station so for example it took us only 3 stops (with 1 line change) to Nanjing Road. This hotel was truly fantastic with loads of great touches like daily essential oils, free mini bar, etc. This is truly a perfect place for your stay in the incredible city of Shanghai.

Booked a suite with a pool. The check-in time was 3pm, but the room was not ready by 5. When I got in, there was a foul smell in the shower and parts of the floor would sink in when stepping on it. Took almost an hour to get a supervisor to talk to. They offered to cancel the reservation and refund it. Never offered an alternative room or other kind of support. Never got a cancellation confirmation and so far no refund for the stay. I then moved to Alila hotel, which only had a room with two twin beds left — but then upgraded me to a suite after hearing about this experience. If they fix the flooring, note also that the room is really warm because of the pool water. There’s also noise from the jets that can’t be turned off (or maybe the switch was broken). The water doesn’t drain, so no foam can be added (1,500 RMB fee if you do). Bring a shower cap if you want to go to the main pool: there isn’t one in the room and you have to buy it from the spa. Also, the toiletry bag is 200 RMB. There’s even a charge for the bottled water.

The Banyan Tree Shanghai On The Bund is a visually stunning hotel — clean, modern, and highly rated, which made it an appealing choice for our family. However, our stay was marred by a serious allergic reaction involving our son, which occurred at checkout and ultimately ruined the entire experience. Despite clearly informing staff of his peanut allergy, he was given snacks that triggered a reaction requiring emergency medical care. The initial response from the hotel was slow, confused, and lacked the urgency and empathy expected from a luxury property.||Management did later acknowledge the incident and offered a partial refund, but the lack of clear allergy protocols, poor communication, and inadequate emergency support during a critical moment were deeply disappointing. The experience left us shaken and undermined our trust in the brand.||Whilst the rooms, location, and views were truly amazing, the experience makes me give this hotel a 1-star rating. Safety and service must come first — especially when a guest’s health is at risk.

I spent two nights here with my son. |The room had a very-very beautiful view. |These are some of the best breakfasts I've ever had while travelling the world. |The rooftop bar was exceedingly enjoyable; the views are breathtaking. |Additionally, the hotel location is ideal. We took the metro from the airport because our bags weren't too heavy, and it was easy and cool. The next day we explored the city by metro as well. After a day in the loud and busy city, it was great to come back to Banyan Tree and relax in the quiet and peaceful atmosphere.|A minor issue was that I had to inquire about and provide an explanation regarding the welcome drink and the late check-out (I requested an extension of 1.5 hours and was granted permission to remain an additional hour and check out at 1 pm). As a gold Accor member of their loyalty program, this is typically not a concern. But in this case I had to explain and ask additionally. However it was easy to settle, because the Banyan Tree team was very nice and polite. |We liked this beautiful hotel very much.
