The Banyan Tree Shanghai On The Bund is a visually stunning hotel — clean, modern, and highly rated, which made it an appealing choice for our family. However, our stay was marred by a serious allergic reaction involving our son, which occurred at checkout and ultimately ruined the entire experience. Despite clearly informing staff of his peanut allergy, he was given snacks that triggered a reaction requiring emergency medical care. The initial response from the hotel was slow, confused, and lacked the urgency and empathy expected from a luxury property.
Management did later acknowledge the incident and offered a partial refund, but the lack of clear allergy protocols, poor communication, and inadequate emergency support during a critical moment were deeply disappointing. The experience left us shaken and undermined our trust in the brand.
Whilst the rooms, location, and views were truly amazing, the experience makes me give this hotel a 1-star rating. Safety and service must come first — especially when a guest’s health is at risk.
