New Plant Riverside District Adds Variety to the Dining Scene in Savannah, Georgia | Eater Carolinas

"This African-inspired lounge brings the savanna to Savannah with small plates, including the Hunt Board and the chicken curry bobotie Hand Pie. Stop here before dinner for a snack and a South African wine." - Barbara Skidmore

Some of the best executed and deliciously flavorful food and cocktails we have eaten in a long time. We went back for a second time because the wings were so amazing. We got the wings, the chicken skewers, the hummus, the malva pudding. There wasn’t a disappointing bite. The peppers in the hummus are divine. The chicken wings are unbelievable. Only have picture of the desert and our totally cleaned plates Drink favorites were the gin and passion fruit cocktail and the Savannah cocktail. So fresh. The ambience is also stunning and attached to a super cool hotel. It was such a vibrant celebration of African culture. We truly loved it. Favorite place we went.

The Baobab Lounge is located inside the lobby of the JW Marriott in Savannah. It's a spectacular hotel on the river. The food here is excellent, and the cocktails are superb. The decor is what earned this bar 3 stars. The theme appears to be fashioned after the big game hunts that take place across African countries. We sat in the mid section of the lounge on a slow Friday afternoon and noticed that not only were there animal trophy heads (stuffed taxidermy), but there were also replicas of African people! But what was truly grotesque was a chandelier fashioned after whips. The whips chandelier was positioned right in front of the African people statues. This wouldn't be so striking if it were at a hotel that wasn't on one of the nations most notorious historic human trafficking Atlantic slave ports, Savannah. Savannah has a deep history in its role in the Euro-Atlantic Slave Trade, so this bar almost feels like racially insensitive or overt in your face homage to Whites who hunted big game on Africa, and alludes to the people of Africa being "big game." I don't know, go see for yourself. Overall, it was a pleasant experience.

We stopped by Baobab Lounge during our recent trip to Savannah, and it was such a memorable experience! The place has a unique and stunning interior, decorated with African-inspired decor and a warm, inviting ambiance. The combination of brick walls and wildlife-themed accents creates a cozy yet sophisticated vibe that makes it perfect for a night out or a special occasion. The menu offers a great selection of dishes with prices in the $20-30 range, and everything we ordered was beautifully presented and delicious. The staff was friendly and attentive, making sure we felt welcomed throughout our visit. We loved the creative and exotic atmosphere - it’s a perfect spot to try something new and enjoy a fun evening with family and friends. Highly recommended if you’re in Savannah and looking for a unique dining experience that blends culture and style.

Strolling River Street after a sunset cruise, we were looking for a spot to dine for a late dinner. I am so glad we spotted Baobab. To enter, you must first walk down a short flight of stairs. There I saw the most beautiful tribal African statues. Immediately when I walked in I began snapping photos. The atmosphere is absolutely stunning! Whoever curated the art did a wonderful job. After admiring the atmosphere, my friend and I grabbed seats at the bar. We enjoyed several small plates including chicken skewers, wings, dried beef and a short rib dish. I thoroughly enjoyed the handmade pita that accompanied the skewers, the pickled vegetables that accompanied the dried meat and the wings which had a delicious peanut flavor that reminded me of a few familiar African dishes. This experience was beautiful and the flavors were delicious.

Every time we visited Savannah, we passed by. This time, we stopped and had drinks and dessert. A great experience, unique drinks and dessert, in the middle of a unique style from Africa. Just a reminder, Baobab is inside of the Marriott, at the riverfront.

So glad I came by here walking through the beautiful JW Marriott. This is one of the most unique restaurants I’ve been to in Savannah. When you walk in, there’s this sense of history like you’re going back in time. The paintings, statues and decor was so cool and it gives a sense of place and an ode to African culture. It was hard to pick what to eat but I settled on the Saboob which was delicious! The brisket, with the sauce on the crispy pita accompanied with my tamarind martini was spectacular! It took a bit of time for someone to greet me but once we got there everything else was great. I can’t wait to go back and try more!
