BenFiddich Is the Best International Bar in 2024

"Located on the third floor of the same building, this sister bar offers a more accessible alternative for those who can’t secure a spot at the upstairs cocktail room; while it doesn’t deliver quite the same otherworldly, inter‑dimensional atmosphere, it still provides a pleasurable, well-crafted drinks experience and is typically easier to get into on short notice." - Brad Japhe

If you’re not lucky enough to get a rez at Bar Bennfidditch than stop into B&F, their sister bar on the 2nd floor. It’s also a no-menu bar that stands for “Brandy & Fruit”, which is what the specialize in but they have a full bar to make what you want. Expect a pop of fruit flavor into whatever you ask for.

A hidden gem in Tokyo! It looks like a small local bar with just one bartender and a helper, but the experience is outstanding. There’s no menu, you simply tell the bartender what kind of drinks or flavors you enjoy, and he crafts something unique. The cocktails are creative, using fresh fruits, special ingredients, and impressive mixology techniques. A truly memorable and authentic experience!

Google
A small traditional Japanese bar where there is no menu, you just tell them what style or taste you are after and they will make you something. Only fits 12 or so people, so it is worth turning up and asking for a time to come back if they are full.

Bar B&F is the sister bar to Bar Benfidich in the same building. I was lucky enough to get 2 seats here at the counter as the bar only accommodates around 16 guests max. There is no menu, just explain what you feel for it the type of alcohol you prefer and they create unique cocktails for you. We tried 5 cocktails between us and they were all excellent. Without a menu I expected a much higher bill, but to my surprise they were quite cheap for this type of experience. Around $40. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommended.

Tried to go to Ben Fiddich without a reservation but it was all booked out. Followed two people who tried the same to the sister bar B&F just below in the same building and I'm glad that I did! This is a bar focuses on fruit liquors. It was fun to talk with the bartenders and the cocktails were extremely good. They do not have a menu as they create a cocktail based on your preferences. All 3 cocktails were good but the one with matcha was one of my favorite drinks that I had in my 11 days of Japan travel. Please have it, you'll be surprised how good it is!

This is not just a bar, it is an EXPERIENCE! There is no menu, so instead their staff asks you about your favorite drinks and curates a drink around that. One of our friends mentioned he wanted a drink with banana, and staff knew what he couldn’t even describe himself, a chocolate banana milkshake drink, complete with sprinkles! We stayed for as long as we could, the experience was amazing! Every drink is hand curated, so they do take a while, enjoy!!

We visited this bar on the second floor of a building in Tokyo, but the experience was a bit confusing from the very beginning. As soon as we walked in, the bartenders immediately asked if we were sure we wanted to be there, or if maybe we were looking for the bar on the ninth floor — which was a bit awkward. We asked if we could have a drink there, and they said yes, so we sat down. Shortly after, however, a bartenders came over and even showed us a picture of the bar upstairs on his phone, asking again if we were sure we wanted to stay at their bar. I actually had to reassure them that yes, it was fine, and we just wanted to have a drink there. The situation felt a bit uncomfortable and gave the impression that the staff wasn’t very organized or welcoming. That said, the cocktail itself was good — nicely made and enjoyable — but overall, the experience was a bit strange and not particularly relaxing.

Google
I really appreciate the bartenders care and attention to their customers. The vibes inside the place is also nice and relaxing. But if I’m comparing it to the OG Ben Fidditch, the cocktails are just not as exciting. The flavors are more predictable and straightforward. I don’t get the sense of “How did they make this? What did they put into it?” The price of the drinks is fair though, and I think if you just want a nice place to chat and meet up with someone, this place is great, just don’t expect mind-blowing drinks.

Yelp
I enjoyed going here a few years ago. I still talk and think about it... I really enjoyed having some creative cocktails here. They had different fresh fruits and asked me to select my favorite. I noticed they had fresh passion fruit so I went for that as my ingredient and mentioned I enjoy gin. Next the server prepared something unique to my tastes. It was great watching the way bartenders in Japan craft their cocktails. It's like a coordinated dance with and elegance and flow to it unlike the style in US.

Yelp
If you find yourself in Tokyo, you have to check out bar B&F. This is a great alternative to the main bar Benfiddich if you are not able to get a reservation. We waited for maybe 5-10 minutes but they got us seated right away and the best part is that while you may not get the full experience, they can concoct the exact drinks if you request as they do upstairs! And, if you don't know exactly what you want that's ok. These skilled mixologists can whip up anything based on what you tell them! The bar is a classy and upscale bar and you can sit either at the bar or a table. It's such an intimate vibe but also had a sense of laid back and social atmosphere.

Yelp
I find it odd to complain about craft cocktail prices that are completely within reason. Bar B & F staff were great and you don't need a reservation, which I did not have for the more famous upstairs neighbor. It was quite the show to watch the drink being made and I appreciated that the bartender listened to what I liked to drink and made something for me and showed me what alcohols he would be using were. Staff were patient and kind to each individual who mistakenly walked into this bar. We only stayed for one drink because we had savored and enjoyed but didn't need to go ham but we talked about the experience our entire two-week trip.

Yelp
TLDR: A great alternative if the upstairs Bar Benfiddich is booked up. Bespoke cocktails crafted to your personal taste in a casual environment. Vibe: 5/5. Located in the same building as the legendary Bar Benfiddich, B&F is located on the 3rd floor in a small quaint space. The bar is a large half circle with 8-10 counter seats as well as a few larger groups tables off to the side. Decor takes design cues from Old world Japan, using a lot of antique wood, metal and glass which creates quite a cozy environment to enjoy a cocktail or 3. The larger group table can accommodate a group of 4-6 people comfortably, however the best seats in the house are belly up to the bar for the mixology show. Service: 5/5. My party of 2 arrived at B&F around 11pm on a Thursday night. We had attempted to grab a few walk in spots at the main bar upstairs, but were booked solid through the night unfortunately. The staff at B&F welcomed us with open arms, with us only having to wait a few minutes for 2 spots to open up at the bar. The bartenders were very accommodating, giving us the full rundown of how the ordering system works and we're able to make some fantastic cocktails. The bartenders at B&F seem to rotate between the main bar and B&F, so you are getting the same caliber of talent at both locations. Drinks came out relatively quickly considering the effort that goes into each order as well as the bar being fully occupied. Overall, I couldn't have asked for better service. Drinks: 5/5. As mentioned before, B&F prides itself on using innovative bartending techniques and ingredients to produce world class cocktails that are tailored to your personal taste buds. There is no official menu, so come prepared to answer the wait staff's barrage of questions on what you are looking for in a drink. On the night of my visit, I first requested the bartender to make me their take on a whiskey sour, but put a Tokyo spin on it. The end result was a sour, but using peated Japanese whiskey and ginseng infused bitters to create an earthy, smoked flavor. The second cocktail I decided to go for was a matcha old fashioned that had been posted on the Bar Benfiddich Instagram page. Again, using Japanese peated single malt, the bartender combined the spirit with freshly muddled citrus, bitters and ceremonial grade whisked matcha. Finishing touches included gold flakes on top of a diamond carved ice block that really took the drink to next level aesthetics. The cocktail was unbelievably balanced, with matcha playing nicely with the peaty whiskey and subtle citrus notes. When it was time to grab the bill, I was pleasantly surprised that each cocktail was around $10-15 which is an absolute deal for the level of craft that went into each one. Overall, if you can't grab a seat at the 13th floor establishment, you should absolutely give B&F a try.

Yelp
Walked into this place and the bartender was in a mood to say the least, my wife and I tried to talk the guy up but was not changing his attitude, no menu drinks are pricey at 1800 yen a piece never offered us water or anything. Drinks were ok, my wife said she felt like we were at a funeral.

Yelp
We had a reservation for Bar Ben Fiddich and we mistakenly went to this bar on the second floor. They must get it all the time because the bartender automatically directed us to the correct floor for Bar Ben Fiddich. We both commented to each other that the bartender was hot.. so yeah, after Ben Fiddich we returned. The staff would ask people coming in if they had a reservation. We did not. Luckily, they were able to accommodate us. We were directed to sit at a corner table and we started drinking there. When space became available at the bar, we were invited to sit at the bar. The staff was nice and attentive. That hot bartender was also funny.. The drinks were good.. and it's a small and comfortable atmosphere. I'm glad they were able to accommodate us. Great stop.

Yelp
Walked into this place by mistake, thinking it was Ben Fiddich. Turns out it's owned by the same company, but a different concept. Two stars for the friendly staff and the interesting decor. It feels like you are stepping back into time during the days of Robin Hood with Hungarian pipe music to go with it. There's no menu, and no mention of prices either. Turns out cocktails are 2000Y a piece (~$20 US). The bar staff is friendly and speak a bit of English. I asked for a gin cocktail in the style of a last word or corpse reviver. He mixed gin, maraschino, green chartreuse, and lime juice which was a good start. Unfortunately, he muddled it with mint and shisho which totally overpowered the cocktail. B ordered a manhattan-style drink that was cough-syrup sweet thanks to the bartenders addition of luxardo cherry liquor. The cocktails are tiny- maybe 3/4 oz of the main spirit. Perhaps fine if you really do like to drink anything. Unfortunately, both of these missed the mark for us. I wasn't willing to gamble another 4000Y for a second chance. It's actually a bar known for its fruit brandy, so maybe better if that's your thing. For me, no thanks.

Yelp
This may be my most favorite bar Ive ever been to. Cocktails with Japanese ginger and shiso were unforgettable. But perhaps the most enjoyable aspect was watching the cocktails be made. Really friendly atmosphere too. Get here!

Yelp
Bar B&F is located on the same building as Bar BenFiddich, but on the second floor. The bar is run by a previous disciple of Bar BenFiddich, so the drinks are definitely of high quality. The bar has a more casual ambience compared to BenFiddich, but still provides great quality drinks, specializing in Brandy drinks. I ordered a Dirty Martini. He made it Gin based and mixed three types of Vermouth, but didn't put any smashed up olives which was kind of weird. Still one of the best martinis I've had. The bar owner also gave a small snack as a Christmas gift. I recommend this bar.

Yelp
Not only have I traveled extensively, I also like drinking - which means I drank in a lot of bars around the world. This is probably my favorite bar which is saying a lot. I was on my way to Bar Ben Fidditch but then I saw this bar so i figured I can bar hop my way up to the 9th floor (there are 3 bars in the same building, one more on the 10th floor). I usually drink whiskey on the rocks (not a huge fan of cocktails because they tend to be too sweet!) but the bartender working here was a true master. There's no menu and the drinks are 1600 yen or something like that. You just tell the bartender what you like and he'll whip it up for you. I had around 3-4 cocktails and all of them were amazing (yuzu cocktail and asian pear cocktail were delish!) I went by myself but people around me were pretty friendly, so I ended up not making it past this bar because I was too busy enjoying the cocktails and chatting with people around me (also turns out Ben Fidditch was closed that day anyways because of new years holidays). I also got to try some 70+ year old brandy that wasn't available anywhere else. I blew through like 100 bucks (that 70 year brandy wasn't cheap) which is a lot for me to spend purely on alcohol by myself but I had a such a great experience I recommend this bar heartily to anyone who wants to drink master cocktails :D

Yelp
Came to this bar after we were too large of a party for Ben Fiddich, which is upstairs. This new sister-bar is just as trendy and intimate. We were served by Takeshi Matsuzawa who was really awesome and speaks English! I showed him some pictures off Ben Fiddich Yelp and he remembered exactly who he made certain drinks for - amazing! He was great at putting on a mesmerizing show and drinks came out individually very delicious! I had the watermelon with mascarpone drink and it was... like I drank a watermelon milkshake but with this exquisite taste I cannot explain. As we conversed with him we found out that he used to work at Ben Fiddich for two years and then started working at the new place. He is the one who carves the awesome squar-ish ice, which he showed us a video of him doing. The ice has cut off corners! It's the little things that you notice about this bar that make it so memorable and worth a visit. Thank you Takeshi - and thank you more for your card so that I may remember to write a review!

Yelp
My travel companion was excited to visit the craft cocktail bars of Tokyo, where he could watch the master bartenders at work and talk to them about Japanese whiskey. We tried to go to Benfiddich, but it was either too full or they didn't think we looked fancy enough, so we got sent down to their overflow bar, B&F, on the second floor. I only got a quick glance at Benfiddich, but it seemed to have a similar look and feel to B&F, which is dimly lit and decorated in... sort of a hobbit-hole way? Dark wood shelves and benches, rows of mysterious bottles, a mini still bubbling away on the bar. It's cozy and romantic, and there's lots to look at if you sit at the bar -- which you probably will, because the whole place seats about 15 and there are only two tables. Things started off well. Part of why we wanted to try Benfiddich is that we'd heard the bartender spoke excellent English (not that we expect everyone to, but we don't speak Japanese). At B&F, the bartender spoke some English, not very much, but he worked with us to figure out our drink order. You basically tell them what kind of alcohol you want, how sweet you like it, and anything you don't want, and they take it from there. I asked for a not-too-sweet gin drink, and got a cocktail made with Kyoto gin and Asian pear puree that was fantastic. It wasn't a large drink or particularly strong, but it had a great flavor and texture and was very pleasant to sip. My travel companion got a whiskey drink with coffee and orange flavors served in a tiny sake-size cup, and although he's not a coffee drinker, he said he enjoyed it. Then things went downhill. We were seated at the bar, so there's no way the bartender didn't know we were finished with our drinks, but... we waited. And waited. Other customers got two rounds in the time we sat being ignored. A bar back came to help, and we were still ignored. For a while, I didn't mind, because we wanted to watch them making drinks, but after a while it seemed pretty clear that they didn't want to serve us. I think we sat there being ignored for maybe 40 minutes? Meanwhile, someone else (non-Asian) tried to come in but was turned away, so it seemed bizarre that they were allowing us to take up seats but not letting us give them money! Finally we gave up and left. Maybe it's different at the main bar, but this experience was pretty bad. At $20 a drink, I feel like we should at least be treated politely. I know that many bars in Japan aren't just open to everyone, but Benfiddich was specifically called out as being foreigner-friendly. If they didn't want to serve us, I'd rather they had just turned us away than seated us at the bar and ignored us. As it is, I can't recommend this bar to visitors.

Yelp
Located on the second floor, this is likely not the bar that you're looking for - but don't be surprised if you end up here when Bar BenFiddich (ninth floor, same owner) is full. B&F claims to serve the same interesting cocktails as BenFiddich, but B&F lacks in atmosphere. It's more brightly lit, with fewer decorations, providing a decidedly less cozy atmosphere. And the shortcomings are highlighted by having seen BenFiddich first, while inquiring about availability. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation at BenFiddich upstairs so you don't have to come here.

Yelp
Wasted Face. But in a good way. I am an Asian girl with a serious case of Asian Flush. In laymans terms: I AM (for all intents and purposes) ALLERGIC TO ALCOHOL. I really don't know why I try or even bother with ingesting alcoholic beverages. But the sweet siren song of boozy handcrafted cocktails always seems to pull me back in. ALSO (PSA)- I am a good wife. As a good wife, I support my husband's desire to visit fancy schmancy bars near and far. And this time I managed to pull on my big girl pants and order 4 (yes-FOUR) cocktails and down them ALL. And it was delicious. Now mind you, we sat at this bar for a little over four hours- so that averages to about one drink an hour. For the non-alcohol impaired, you may say- oh that's easy. But for lil' ole-flushy-faced-me this was quite a feat! And so I attribute this all to the ridiculous and talented bar tending skills at Bar B+F. They have a shelf of in-season fruits. And you can literally point at a fruit and say "make me something with that!" They even keep a pot of consommé ready for any savory concoctions that may come up. This is not a run of the mill rail drinks kind of establishment. Good individually crafted cocktails take TIME. Yes- you may wait. When the establishment is full- you may not get a drink for another 45 min. Just make sure you anticipate the lag and request your cocktail a little in advance. Typically it takes between 5-15 minutes for a cocktail to be produced. They also Specialize in Brandy- and have quite a collection. If you can't get into Ben Fiddich- this place is still highly recommended.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing experience! We stopped here on our way to BF on the 9th floor and ended up staying for 3 drinks! We dictated our likes/dislikes to the bartender and he followed through with delicious, unique cocktails that contained fresh fruit and herbs. Everything was delicious and different! The bar is very cozy. Compared to upstairs BF, there is a more relaxed (and light filled) vibe but honestly the cocktails are the same quality. Highly recommend :)

Yelp
Watching the bar tender was an absolute delight, he made me a drink with yuzu and by far that's one of the best drink I've had in my life... I'm sure I will go back to B & F before heading back to States.

Megha A.

Yelp
We thought we were going to Ben Fiddich but mistakenly, came here. My drink was good but nothing overly special and waiting 30 mins for 4 drinks (only 1 of which was exceptional) did not make this worth it; neither did the almost 2000yen price tag per drink. This "concept" of no menu, tell bartender what you like and they will make it is ALL over the Bay Area, CA and I'm pretty sure in NY too (°as well as possibly other places in the world). We also were ALL Americans/Europeans in there so tells u -no japanese come here! Save yourself the money and go get a drink elsewhere.

Yelp
We have been going to Bar Benfiddich for years now and met Takeshi on our trip last February. We were very excited to hear about their new bar and that Takeshi was the head bartender. We were finally able to visit last night and it lived up to expectation. First of all Takeshi recognized us and remembered we lived in Los Angeles which is pretty remarkable. Second, the drinks he mixed were wonderful! We did omakase and he created a Pomegranate Sour for me and a rum, apricot, coffee distillate drink for my husband. My husband doesn't even like coffee but the drink was perfectly balanced and delicious. As always, Takeshi was warm and wonderful and his bar back equally conscientious. Did I mention the glassware? The glass my drink was served in was 100 year old French crystal and just as gorgeous as the drink. The ambiance of the bar is beautiful. I love hearing great jazz in Tokyo bars so hearing the classical music was different but it suits the character of the place. Also be warned, smoking is still allowed in Japanese bars. No fault of Bar B&F but it can affect your experience is you're sensitive to smoke like me...
