My travel companion was excited to visit the craft cocktail bars of Tokyo, where he could watch the master bartenders at work and talk to them about Japanese whiskey. We tried to go to Benfiddich, but it was either too full or they didn't think we looked fancy enough, so we got sent down to their overflow bar, B&F, on the second floor.
I only got a quick glance at Benfiddich, but it seemed to have a similar look and feel to B&F, which is dimly lit and decorated in... sort of a hobbit-hole way? Dark wood shelves and benches, rows of mysterious bottles, a mini still bubbling away on the bar. It's cozy and romantic, and there's lots to look at if you sit at the bar -- which you probably will, because the whole place seats about 15 and there are only two tables.
Things started off well. Part of why we wanted to try Benfiddich is that we'd heard the bartender spoke excellent English (not that we expect everyone to, but we don't speak Japanese). At B&F, the bartender spoke some English, not very much, but he worked with us to figure out our drink order. You basically tell them what kind of alcohol you want, how sweet you like it, and anything you don't want, and they take it from there.
I asked for a not-too-sweet gin drink, and got a cocktail made with Kyoto gin and Asian pear puree that was fantastic. It wasn't a large drink or particularly strong, but it had a great flavor and texture and was very pleasant to sip. My travel companion got a whiskey drink with coffee and orange flavors served in a tiny sake-size cup, and although he's not a coffee drinker, he said he enjoyed it.
Then things went downhill. We were seated at the bar, so there's no way the bartender didn't know we were finished with our drinks, but... we waited. And waited. Other customers got two rounds in the time we sat being ignored. A bar back came to help, and we were still ignored. For a while, I didn't mind, because we wanted to watch them making drinks, but after a while it seemed pretty clear that they didn't want to serve us. I think we sat there being ignored for maybe 40 minutes? Meanwhile, someone else (non-Asian) tried to come in but was turned away, so it seemed bizarre that they were allowing us to take up seats but not letting us give them money! Finally we gave up and left.
Maybe it's different at the main bar, but this experience was pretty bad. At $20 a drink, I feel like we should at least be treated politely. I know that many bars in Japan aren't just open to everyone, but Benfiddich was specifically called out as being foreigner-friendly. If they didn't want to serve us, I'd rather they had just turned us away than seated us at the bar and ignored us. As it is, I can't recommend this bar to visitors.
