I had heard many good things about Bitácora from a few locals and thought I might make it a destination one evening whilst riding around Barceloneta. Much to my delight it had not gotten busy yet and I saw myself to the bar. It is a modest bar, nothing fancy, nothing scary, so my anticipation was whet with ideas that I was led to a hidden gem and could hardly contain my appetite.
I ordered ceviche and fried asparagus. The asparagus was battered and fried perfectly, and dressed with a nicely seasoned tomato sauce, but the ceviche was off. Way off. It seemed that the fish had sat a bit too long in the lime juice which leads me to believe that a batch is pre-made for each service - not cool. Ceviche needs to be made to order, no exceptions. I don't care if there's only two cooks for the entire restaurant, this is just bad practice. The only other possible scenario is that they were waiting for my asparagus to be done before serving it, but really if that were the case I would have received them in closer proximity and not 15 minutes apart, so....
I will definitely give Bitácora another shot, if in the area, but next time I am very likely to avoid the ceviche in favor of more common staples.
