Cool dive bar. The prices are good. It's a small space but comfortable enough. The bartender was pleasant.

Google
Hands down one of my TOP beer bars. I just didn’t realize I had still not written a review for this place! Pros: - super friendly staff - super knowledgeable staff - you can get your own food here, or get a delivery from the 20K restaurants in the vicinity - pinball - wait, did I say, only the BEST beer?! - sometimes, they change beer menus DURING the night - best community and staff - fernet on tap - great music - life recommendations from sagacious bartenders Cons: - I’ve been coming here for many years, and have not found true love - makes me grab a beer on a Sunday

Google
I have a walker named Napoleon of Brooklyn Family Dog Walker that recommends I come here. He said this bar was dog friendly and the staff is amazing. He was on the money. The bartender was great and the atmosphere was made even better with the choice of music. Me, my wife and my pup couldn't have asked for a better drink and chat.

Google
Love this bar. Serious taps and bottles. Chill vibe. Tv has the WC right now. Sister bar to OWL FARM CARDIFF GIANT MISSION DELORES and GLORIETTA BALDY. So the beers will be fresh and fun ALWAYS.

Google
I went there on a very crowded Saturday afternoon. There is a full service bar with finger foods. We had pumpkin beer. It was very interesting. Fun place to go. They offer a happy hour. Reasonably priced.

Google
This is the perfect place to sip a great beer & listen to seriously good music. Bar tenders are knowledgeable and give great recommendations. Not fancy or pretentious but dog friendly and the perfect spot for a weekend afternoon beer.

Google
Great bar, seemingly okay prices. More of a beer place than a cocktail place but you’ll survive. Pinball in the back, people in the front

Google
Englishman in Brooklyn. Fantastic venue, enjoyed the drinks the great atmosphere and the music has been great. The bar man is superb. Plus I see it has pinball! Sadly I’m rubbish so can’t review but everything else is great.

Yelp
I used to come here for the extraordinary artwork in the restrooms but now they're just this awful shade of puce. I would tell my friends that I had an upset stomach and then just sit on the can and take in all the colors and textures. it was a bit like Rothko but in a toilet. An almost transcendental experience. Sometimes I'd go to BGH specifically to take a dump and just bathe in the glow of the iridescent shapes, colors and complex calligraphic forms which were always evolving. now it's just this horrible color that makes you want to stab yourself in the eye. A truly terrible toilet experience. They have an ok beer list tho.

Yelp
Great casual spot for a drink! This is one of those super local spots that's always full of people on a night out. It's well-located on Smith Street, which is full of great food and dessert options. It does get quite loud so keep that in mind. Good place for a drink!

Elizabeth E.

Yelp
I love this little bar. Great options on tap and a great custom menu. Not a great assortment of cider - but otherwise they have a great menu. They have 3 pinball machines in the back! GBH has an ATM but they do not have a change machine. If you're looking to play pinball definitely bring some singles as the machines do not have Apple Pay/tap to pay/accept credit cards. They do NOT serve food (sometimes they sell chips) but they welcome outside food. Not a sports bar but they have TV's with the sports game of the eve! They take card & cash. Street parking.

Randy H.

Yelp
No surprise I love this place, as this is the same team behind the wonderful Owl Farm. Straightforward place that always has an expansive, well curated selection of drafts. Very chill with a nice outdoor sidewalk space in the front.

Reginald F.

Yelp
Come chill if You like being among adults. Bring someone or meet somebody new. Great conversation, music, sports.and atmosphere.

Yelp
One of my new favorite bars in the city. It's spacious on the inside with plenty of bar seating and an awesome rotating menu of beers - tons on tap with plenty of cans and bottles to choose from as well. Most of the draughts have three pour options: 9 oz, 12 oz, and 16 oz. Some of the pricier or higher ABV options only have 9 and 12 oz pours available. Some beers are fairly pricey (eg $13 for a 12 oz pour) but I don't think the prices are unreasonable given that some of these beers can't be found anywhere else easily. The bartenders are always lovely when I go in. One man who was working a few weeks ago was particularly great and recommended a few beers, pouring tastes for me without me even asking. I ended up choosing the IPA he recommended and loved it. The second beer I had was a Concord grape sour that was great as well. They have a ton of ciders to choose from too. Last time I went, my boyfriend had an 8% abv cider that we both loved. Again, the menu is huge and constantly rotates, so we never tire of going. I wish they added some food to the menu, but as far as drinks go this place is phenomenal. Will definitely return.

Yelp
Landed in Brooklyn tonight for the first time in a while, and I had a great time at this bar. It is a chill relaxed neighborhood spot--not a dive--not fancy either--just a chill spot. Zach (Zak?) is a most pleasant bartender, and suggested several local beers that really hit the spot. Great vibes if you're looking to relax with a selection of local brews on tap (and you're near-ish downtown Brooklyn).

Kelsey B.

Yelp
I randomly stumbled into BGH about 7 months ago and forgot all about it until I was in the neighborhood again this weekend. After trying to go to the all too crowded Other Half down the street a group of us decided to grab drinks at BGH instead and I'm so glad. I first came here in the summer and loved that the big windows were open, cool vibe and plenty of seating. I found a similar comfort on a cold winter afternoon with cozy seating, chill music and great service. BGH has a great craft beer selection (Other Half, Hill Farmstead, etc) the prices are on point for the area and what you're drinking. No food (other than chips I think?) served here, but you can bring in your own (woo!) There are some arcade games in the back if thats your scene or always a good crowd of people in the front, its about a block from the F train and you can walk to a ton of other spots in the neighborhood, will have this one bookmarked for another visit next time I am in the area, cheers!

Linda D.

Yelp
My first time and love it already. Great beer selection. Really nice bartender. Awesome tunes.

Whitney L.

Yelp
Dope bar with a superb selection of craft beers, both on draft and by the bottle/can. One of my favorite bars in Brooklyn for beer. Came here on the weekend, earlier in the day. Bonus points for being open before 4pm (most other bars don't open until 4 or 5pm). What I love: the immense beer selection, comfortable seating and layout with pinball machines in the back, great staff who are both personable and generous Will be back!

John S.

Yelp
The bartender Sarah has loud keys attached to her hip when she walks around but otherwise she's the bomb - great knowledge of the beer selection and attention to all necessary points of service. BGH has been a beacon in this ugly pandemic storm and Sarah is one of its sparkling lights. Go before we are all shut down again!

Ingrid S.

Yelp
I used to come here on a regular basis with a friend. I don't know what happened. No, I do. I stopped being friends with that friend and then broke up with the bar. Silent tear role. It was convenient as hell because she lived off the blue line in queens and I lived and still do off the F/G line. Ten minutes away from both of our jobs. Great happy hour. 2 for 1s until 7pm on certain beers and well drinks for only a few bucks. I could race over here on a friday night and have a beer in front of my face by 5:40pm at the latest. How can it get better? It can't. But wait, it does because the craft beer menu selection here is outstanding. I recently came in to chill with a book and use a beer passport deal thing that I had. Oh my god. My heart swooned and I thought "Why haven't I written a Yelp review for this place yet? Why haven't I come back here in years?! I'm always on Smith Street. They have a tart cherry trippel belgium from Michigan on tap, stop it. Also, Folksbier brews that I've always wanted to try down the block." I think dogs are allowed inside as well, there's no real food sold here. Folks are nice and asked for beer recommendations and were not suprisingly doing the exact same thing as me: working on their laptops and reading. It's that bar and it's perfect. Never change.

Caroline D.

Yelp
Go to bar great harry - (ask for Dylan - any emergency he'll fix, he won't ask questions ) - great drinks great price - recommend to a friend;)

Ray A.

Yelp
Ordered a double shot of Jameson and from the first taste I knew it wasn't Jameson .... so I believe they put bottom shelf liquor in top shelf bottles Slowly after sipping I felt odd, my stomach knew it wasn't top shelf liquor too. Within 15 minutes from the glass hitting my lips my stomach was upset.

Saxon B.

Yelp
All the bartenders are great and the beer selection is on point. Plus the music is always great. You really can't go wrong if you're looking for a dark, cozy and welcoming place to throw back some pints. Whether you're just trying to be by your lonesome, take a date, hang w your mom, strike up a convo w a stranger or chill w friends, this is the place.

Suzanne S.

Yelp
How have I not reviewed this spot before?! Lot of evenings here. Staff is amazing. Amazing selection, always up to give you a taste for indecisive people like me! Always great jams when Arion is behind the bar. Met really wonderful people there, a true neighborhood hang with all different folks. Only criticism is sometimes it's too business-bro. Married men in their 40s on an ego trip. It does add interesting entertainment though, so there's that. Love the people who work here, best there is!

Zach S.

Yelp
BGH is the watering hole for locals that live in Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Boerum Hill. The bartenders (Jill, Sonja, Malena, Arion, Justin, and Dylan- I'm lookin at you ppl) are consummate professionals and your drink will never be empty if you leave a good tip. You'll have a blast at the BGH so long as you're friendly with the locals and bar tenders, and just don't be obnoxious.

Samantha G.

Yelp
The. Best. Bar. Ever. Over 15 delicious rotating draft lines - what can you not like? No boring Blue Moon on draft here. There's no food but bring in whatever you'd like from one of the many local spots. Bartenders are the best in the biz.

Hong L.

Yelp
I cannot believe I have never reviewed this place. Bar Great Harry helped put craft beer on the map in Brooklyn, and I've been going there for at least 5 years. I've seen the bar evolve over the years, and the tap list continues to get tighter and tighter. BGH always gets great rare kegs, and always has great events planned throughout the year. I only wish we lived a little closer, as this would totally be my local watering hole. If you are a beer nerd like me, if it wasn't for BGH, we wouldn't have other BK gems like Owl Farm, Mission Dolores, Glorietta Baldy, and the new Cardiff Giant.

Pooja C.

Yelp
I was at another bar on this same street and left at closing time around 11pm (during the COVID curfew). I was walking to the train but noticed this place still going strong blasting music and people enjoying drinks inside and outside the bar. I wondered if I missed something so went inside to see if my friend and I could get a drink. The bartender said they were closed so we left and figured the people we saw were about to close out. About 10-15 minutes later while waiting for an Uber, we saw a girl come out to a table holding a full glass of beer. None of the other patrons were leaving either. Confused by this, I went inside to ask what's up. The bartender was being mad rude and acting like because we came in late we couldn't expect to be served. I asked him why other people were still being served and he said they were "waiting a while" and that the drink was in a to-go glass (it wasn't). I said even if they were, they're clearly still serving after curfew so how is it they can serve those people but not us? He kept giving me BS answers so we left. Of course, about 2 minutes later after I came outside, I saw the same girl come out and serve the group ANOTHER drink in a regular glass cup. I also saw her talking shit about me to her friends over there and I gave them some appropriate responses back. This bar clearly has special rules for regular patrons or employees and that isn't legal or fair to others. Either obey the law and shut down completely by 11pm or serve everyone who comes in that bar before you decide to close in your own time. You can't have double standards and expect to get away with it. FOH.

Yelp
I have been coming to BGH since they opened. My kid practically learned how to read on Sundays playing Hangman in the bar. The days of bringing our beloved dogs are long gone as are, it seems, the days of great selection of rotating taps. For a while, I could barely find a beer that wouldn't blow my head off. Lately though, it seems half the menu is struck through, including the cans. It makes me think no one is curating the beers anymore. With so much nearby competition -- Svendale, Folksbier, Other Half, Big Alice -- the owners may want to reconsider their complacent attitude. You're not the only game in town anymore. Also miss a lot of the old staff.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Although the bartender was incredibly courteous and welcoming, the beer was incredibly underwhelming. What happened to the BGH I used to know and love? Where's the Hill? What happened to all the good hazy IPAs? I want my elite neighborhood beer bar back. Step it up and get back in the race. I have faith in you.

Jim B.

Yelp
Twenty one drafts - all craft labels. Limited selection of spirits. Beer and shot special $9.00. A decent Bloody Mary this Sunday was $8.00. Background music was something modern and mellow. One flatscreen tuned to a sports channel. Bartender today was fine

Emily D.

Yelp
Pretty typical dive bar with lots of tap options (varying sizes) and reasonable prices.

Sol C.

Yelp
This beer bar has a low key, fun vibe and also some seriously fantastic and unique beer options. I tried Transmitter from LIC described on the menu as a biere de champagne perfect for a celebration...and it really was! Highly recommend

Tron X.

Yelp
I'm an obnoxious beer snob and I've seen the great draft lists on their Instagram. The space is a cool, sort of a wood cabin vibe with low light. They do have great drafts. Prices are ok, a little high but that's what you pay for fancy beer like this. But there were six or seven toddlers in the place! Parents with their children were everywhere. A guy with a crying baby in a baby bjorn was right near the entrance. A two year old kid kept running up and down the length of the bar. In the back where the three pinball machines are some parents were using it as a parking garage for their strollers an congesting the whole room. One guy was changing his kids diaper on the divider next to the games. No! This is a bar! This is a place for adults to be drunk! 21 and older only! This is not a restaurant! It is not appropriate to bring your infant to a place that writes on it's sidewalk sideboard "a cozy spot to get drunk and play pinball." Points deducted for the kids only. With all the great beer spots in this area I would love to come back, but I will stay away for a while and see if they change their minds on the kid thing.

Julie B.

Yelp
Came in here late late one night (okay, it was only like midnight) and was greeted by metal music and Nicest Bartender of All Time. The beer selection was expansive and interesting. Nicest Bartender of All Time was extremely knowledgeable and let us try lots of the beers and was just overall the nicest bartender of all time. We ended up staying until closing. In the words of my boyfriend "I'm not going to drink bad beer anymore," so here we are. Adulthood at its finest.

Rob K.

Yelp
I've lived in this neighborhood for about 15 years. Been to just about all of the bars around here. This place has great bartenders, a clean, nice spot, The bathrooms are clean, the music is good... The people are good. It's all good. Come here. It's a really good spot. From a local. Especially, Arion, Carlos and Justin. The masters of the bar.

Peter D.

Yelp
This is a bar. I don't consider it to be much of a destination, but I've certainly ended up there once or thrice (usually after a long night elsewhere), and never had a bad time. The bartenders tend to be either friendly or surly (it's what they call a "crapshoot") but the pours are pretty heavy either way and I'm not really looking to bond (just to play pinball by myself in the corner) so whatever. It's dog-friendly, so if you're particularly drunk and have no shame, most of the patrons won't mind letting you pet their pups for a while. Although, you should be aware that it creeps people out when you quietly sob to yourself as you pet their dog. Just FYI.

Joi B.

Yelp
I decided long ago that any bar with "Harry" in the name is probably going to be good. Hey, you have a lot to live up to if you're going to name yourself In the tradition of the venerable Harry's Bar in Venice, right? The place where Hemingway drank. The place where the Bellini was born. Kansas City has two great Harry bars, in fact. Brooklyn's Bar Great Harry lives up to the high standard. You know the kind of place. The one that compels you to just stop in every night. I don't live in Brooklyn anymore, nor have I ever lived in the area of Smith Street, but BGH reminds me of my regular watering hole in Brooklyn, that being the Brooklyn Ale House in Williamsburg. I was one of those people darkening a bar stool many a night until closing several years ago. I could see myself doing that at BGH, too. Not many bars do it for me so that I'm inspired to be a regular. On the late afternoon/early eve that I visited, there was a bustling happy hour going on, with good specials. The doors were all thrown open on this lovely fall day and I couldn't imagine myself wanting to be any other place but here. I could see Hemingway very much at home, smoking a cigar, drinking some scotch, watching the ladies... Bar Greatest Harry? Perhaps.

Kenneth A.

Yelp
I am writing this review on behalf of my dog Josephine. She cant type very well and tends to drool on the keyboard. We love this bar. She has her regular stool. As with kids and dogs in bars I am very conscientious; when it is too crowded or there are too many pups we don't linger. I think it is important for dog people and parents to bear this in mind and be responsible about it. You put the other customers and the staff in a very uncomfortable position. But hey, If someone can wheel a loaded stroller into a bar I really feel I should be able to bring my dog in. At least she poops outside. Anyhoo, the bartenders here are all very knowledgeable and friendly. This is not a common occurrence in any bar. Perhaps it is partially due to the fact that I am usually accompanied by a very sweet pup. Perhaps not. This is not a lounge or club. It is neighborhood bar. Natural wood, brick, bare light bulbs, pinball and good music. Really good beers and a full liquor selection. A great place to meet friends, pooches or sit and read.

Summer R.

Yelp
I've only been here on a rainy Sunday afternoon but cool pub vibe and nice selection of beer.

Matt E.

Yelp
4 major selling points=4 stars: -Amazing Happy Hour (from 2-7pm all wells and 10 beers, mostly crappy canned stuff and Yuenling draft are 2 for $5) -Dog Friendly -3 pinball machines (3 plays for $2.00, 1 for 75 cents) -Weekly Bar Trivia Another selling point is that they have a good selection of craft beers. The bartender wasn't the best and was extremely insistent on checking all IDs before starting to get our drinks. Otherwise GBH is a great place to stop at for a drink (and/or a game of Pinball).

Lana V.

Yelp
Sometimes, it's easy to forget that Bar Great Harry exists. It's not exactly flashy or full of beautiful hip people (That's right I used hip). But once you return, you remember that laid back bars like this are exactly why living in Carroll Gardens is awesome. I can't even comment on the drinks because I didn't drink anything the last time I was here. However, nobody seemed to care and our group sat undisturbed for hours in the back room playing a board game. Don't you worry BGH, I'll be back, and judging by the others' reviews of your beer selection, I'll be drinking a whole lot of beer to make up for this last time. One request though, turn the music down a little.

N Thane B.

Yelp
I love this bar. Great atmosphere and amazing selection. I particularly like the cider collection. Jill, one of the bartenders, always has the best energy. She makes you feel great while you're there. I love going on her days. Overall a great spot. I recommend it highly.

Sophia T.

Yelp
The rudest bartender I have ever encountered. Will NEVER be coming back. When I asked for a drink the response I received was "absolutely not I'm too tired go somewhere else". This is no way to speak to customers.

Bill T.

Yelp
Very good selection, bartenders were friendly, prices are pretty good. Plus, as people mention, it is very dog friendly. I sat at the bar and a little guy (maybe a terrier) had his water bowl on the bar beside my Flying Dog Sour Cherry Ale. Good music when I was there, too. Seems a little cramped inside but maybe that's because so many people like it.

Renee P.

Yelp
For what it is .... It definitely IS as good as it gets! This is truly my favorite, if not most often visited, neighborhood bar. A t first it was because it is easy for us to kill two birds with one stone ... you see, me and the other half LOVE good beer. It's even better when it rotates almost daily, yet you can clearly follow the rotation since each is described on the menu in a sentence or two on the menu (crisp hay, smells like grass, grapefruit after taste? .... YES, you had me at grass). Pair this up with the fact that the place allows dogs and we have the perfect marriage. We start MANY an early evening by hitting the dog park to start ... and then let Buzz (yes, that's our dog's name ... no, not after the astronaut, after the feeling) lead us straight to BGH. They even give you a bowl of water for the pup! Now that's thoughtful ... You can bring in food, or order food for delivery at any time ... taco's, cuban or wings across the street seem extra amazing after three 8% beers ... trust me The beers are cold and very fairly priced, the bartenders sweet and accommodating and the lack of decor is made by far made up by the fact that my dog can wrestle on the floor with like minded pups and relax with a pig ear for the rest of the evening .... meaning once I get home, I CAN relax for the rest of the evening ... WIN WIN!! ps ... If you're not a dog lover you may want to reconsider as I can see why this might be an annoying place if you're easily upset by slobber ...

Kenny C.

Yelp
BGH is a super cool neighborhood bar. It's non-pretentious, but is far from being a dive. They have a great selection of beers, friendly bartenders, three pinball machines in the back room, and what sounds like someone's Beatles Pandora playlist on blast. What's not to like?

Amy J.

Yelp
This place has such great character- service is exceptional, large range of beverages that are executed to perfection, and a quieter atmosphere to spend quality time with friends and family.

EraCilia I.

Yelp
Jill is an amazing bartender! Atmosphere is great!! & bar menu is all around best.. just stop by and see for yourself...

Gordon E.

Yelp
I went this afternoon for a beer and a shot. They aren't doing any favors for price -- the deal was $10 for a beer and a shot. It's a comfortable buzz, but it's not competitive with the rest of the bars in the area. There are dozens of bars in this area of Boerum Hill and Carroll Gardens, so if you want or need cheaper, you can always go across the street. They get points for the punk rock sound track. They had an all-women band covering Iggy Pop on the playlist, and a few others I didn't recognize. Their bartender was a punk with the haircut and tattoos, and she knew all of the lyrics. It's a comfortable bar, with lots of dark wood, and plenty of natural sunlight. The bar attracts all sorts of people in the neighborhood, and if you go alone, as I did, you won't be alienated or lonely. I had a long philosophy talk with a man from the Lower East Side, who had biked down for a drink. I felt really comfortable at this bar and I'm definitely, 100% going to go back.

Dan G.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar! Friendly bartenders, awesome beer selection and always great music playing. You can bring food in which is rad, and can even rent out the back room for parties! On a sad note, they used to be dog friendly, but stupid ny state changed the laws. Although I'm pissed I can't hold them to blame for that. All thats left now are the bite marks on the chair legs from dogs that used to hang there. Best bar on Smith St.

Kristofor N.

Yelp
Stopped in a quick beer while I was getting my truck tinted. Very extensive beer list. I order the Suarez Family Brewing Homespun. Amazing pour. As soon as I walked in, the AC was cranking, television showing the Olympics, the blues being played, two guys at the bar. Bar tender greeted me and poured me a glass of water and poured me the perfect beer. Both glasses were hand cleaned in front of me by this glass washer located on the bar. They have plenty of tap beer. All different beers with only Miller High Life, Budwiser, and Bud Lite. The rest if the menu has different choices. I like this place already. They do have can beers and bottled beer. Plenty of ciders. The most expensive beer is a 30 dollar stout aged in bourbon barrels. Free samples for those who need to. I look at it like this.... try it and if you don't like it don't order it again. Good place to come in and relax.

Shannon G.

Yelp
Bar Great Harry is where you go when you and your bros don't want to put real pants on but still want to interact with society. (Read: Carroll Garden's version of a dive bar.) It's a small, dark bar with a few tables and a solid beer selection. So, not exactly my cup of tea. But if you're in the mood for a casual brew, Bar Great Harry is a good option.

Prince B.

Yelp
Amazing. Drinks were awesome. Not expensive. Lots of local focal. Never a bad time Tuesday Friday and Saturday. Bar tender ( Arion ) was fantastic. I was so happy I found this place. Big fan of evil twin and fernet- branca. Amazing Tuesday night.!!! Look forward to Summer. I can't imagine summer night. I think I'm home.

John S.

Yelp
The best thing (I think) about BGH is that cans of Butternuts are cheaper than Bud or Amstel Light! Ha! For real though. If you just want plain old beer, why would you want to come here? Have no fear though. If that is really your thing (that being lame beer), feel free to try out the "Trash Flight" of beer for $8. Expect a Black Label can, Miller High Life can, and PBR. There are about 12 taps and a very nicely put together bottle list. You won't find extreme rarities, but you will find loads of quality items. No food, but they do serve the DUB meatpies. I also really like the fact that they continually update their on-tap list on their blog. Nice touch.

Joseph M.

Yelp
Great beer selection, fun staff, and some board games. Only downside is no food selection, but they do have potato chips.

Rob S.

Yelp
Great beer list and had some stouts on draft in July. So glad that people realize summer is not just ipa season. Good music and relaxed atmosphere.

David W.

Yelp
Bartender was extremely rude and condescending, would not recommend. I hope the Managment rectifies this situation.
