I'm a bit surprised by Ayumi S' review of Bar Ishinohana. I thought the service was fantastic (as such with the majority of Japanese businesses.) A note to you Ayumi S, in Japan you have to ASK (aka sumimasen)
Ishinohana is a wonderful little cocktail bar right in Shibuya close by to the JR rail station. I came here twice actually during my stay in Tokyo.
The first time I came here was just for a quick drink with my GF before she flew back out to the states. Luckily for her, she was wearing workout clothes and the staff didn't mind at all. We sat near the end of the bar by the small table for two. The two staff members working behind the bar are really the barbacks whereas the owner and bartender Ishigaki-san is the star. Although we planned to come to this bar anyways, we were told by a few others we met during our stay in Japan that this bar is very famous in Japan since the owner had won a few international competitions.
I ordered a Japanese Old Fashioned, which was a mushroom infused Nikka whiskey with maple syrup, and Angustura bitters while the GF ordered a "Shiso" Green Smash, which was a vodka base with passion fruit, shiso green, a lemongrass cordial, lime juice, and tonic water.
As Ishigaki-san was preparing our drinks (under a spotlight btw, a common theme in higher end bars in Japan), we were served a small portion of potato soup. The soup was served cold as a refresher since Japan is pretty humid in June.
The Japanese Old Fashioned was essentially a well made Old Fashioned with a slight twist. You could somewhat taste the shitake mushroom infusion while the maple syrup cuts the bitterness that would come through. I also enjoyed the mushroom garnish with the drink. I also liked how the ice was hand cut.
My GF stated she loved her drink and proceeded to become sad as her flight loomed over.
Pricing is quite reasonable too. Drinks are priced at around 1300 yen and up depending on what you order, not much different than say Washington DC, NYC, LA, etc.
We also struck up a conversation with the owner regarding his appearance on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations a few years ago as well as just normal chit chat.
On my second visit before my flight back to Washington DC, I ordered up a few classics, an Old Fashioned and a Manhattan. Both were well balanced and delicious. The owner was surprised to see me again and we had a conversation about everything from Japanese tastes to American bourbon.
Honestly, this is a great drinking establishment and a memorable end to my trip to Japan. I'm sorry to see that Ayumi S had a bad experience, but from my few weeks spent in Japan, you cannot expect them to come to you if you are a Westerner. Simply asking and saying excuse me in Japanese goes a long way.
As far as cocktails go, were they the best I've ever had? Best in Japan? Not the best per say, but well executed and worthy of a visit.
